NPR and three Colorado public radio stations filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging President Trump's executive order to bar federal funding from going to NPR and PBS. NPR's David Folkenflik explains more. And, the Trump administration on Tuesday ordered federal agencies to unwind all federal funding to Harvard University. Trump claims the university fosters antisemitism and stifles viewpoint diversity. Connor Murnane — campus advocacy chief of staff at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression — argues that Harvard's failures do not justify Trump's dramatic steps against the university. Then, if you've seen the hit TV show "Bridgerton," you've likely heard the musical stylings of the Vitamin String Quartet. The group reimagines pop songs as string instrument covers, and members Rachel Grace and Derek Stein share more about their musical journeys.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

As can often happen to records made by virtual unknowns that end up selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Alanis Morissette's uncensored diary of an album 'Jagged Little Pill' is perceived by many with a degree of snark and cynicism. Our guest this week, singer/songwriter Lori Garrote, is not one of these people. Raw, unvarnished and intensely personal, JLP became much more than just another record for her and millions of other women. You oughta know... Songs discussed in this episode: You Oughta Know (Alanis Morissette cover) - Vitamin String Quartet; Stand Alone - Lori Garrote; Too Hot - Alanis Morissette; Seether - Veruca Salt; All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, Perfect - Alanis Morissette; Bad Reputation - Joan Jett; Hand In My Pocket, Right Through You, Forgiven, You Learn, Head Over Feet, Mary Jane, Ironic, Not The Doctor, Wake Up, Your House (a cappella) - Alanis Morissette; Undertow - Lori Garrote

In this podcast we talk about Rogue, the Doctor's new sexy friend, who we met along with some dubious bipedal bird cosplayers or LARPers. Ben gives a brief background on Oliver Frey, aka Zack's Rogue in Him magazine and connects the dots between the comic and RTD. David muses on watching a show for young people and wonders if adventure plots are a thing of the past. The opening music is Vitamin String Quartet's version of Billie Ellis's "Bad Guy," and the closing music is VSQ's version of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face." We recorded this episode on 12 June 2024.
Jesse Crossley makes his triumphant return to the podcast to talk about the Kendrick/Drake beef, and the hit Kendrick Lamar track "HUMBLE." And I'm just realizing now we forgot to do a bonus segment...I'm going to have to sit down. Stassi welcomes her husband Beau Clark back on this episode! Stassi starts off by sharing that she and Beau were trendsetters with the recessional song after their wedding - "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull. If you've already watched Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1, you know it's the song playing in the pivotal scene of the last episode. Welcome to the Independent spotlight. on this edition of the spotlight, its wide open on an open forum. Our album will be from the Vitamin String Quartet, and the group we lost was a member of the Eagles. And just to prove that I'm just as human as anyone else, this show does have some technical difficulties including a track I cut off by shutting off the recorder, time checking and killing and then not setting the que properly, and a track that also landed in the wrong place that didn't play during the CD of the day. Pre-ceremony music can consist of anything you like. If you need some ideas, try listening to The Vitamin String Quartet or The Piano Guys, both have been very popular choices for years!! Then decide on your processional song (s) and the recessional song. I'll keep the volume where it belongs!!

Through it all, Drew Forde is a champion for artistic entrepreneurship and demonstrates the level of dedication and passion required to carry this versatile art form well into the 21st century.Featured Music:"Bach Cello Suite No. 2 (prelude)" arranged for viola"If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys, arranged for viola by Drew Forde"Sunflower" by Post Malone, arranged by Vitamin String Quartet, featuring Drew FordeSupport the show (https://classicalmusicindy.org/support-classical-music-indy/)
Earl Maneein is a violinist and composer who loves nothing more than to lend his considerable chops as a classically trained musician to the sounds and venues of heavy metal and hardcore punk. None other than Robert Trujillo, bassist for Metallica, has called him “a kick-ass artist who pushes the creative boundaries.” Earl received a Bachelor of Music from Queens College and a Master of Music from the Mannes College of Music, where he studied with Daniel Phillips of the Orion String Quartet. He is the founder of and main composer for the string quartet SEVEN)SUNS, which plays both extant and new metal and hardcore work, and he is also a member of the Vitamin String Quartet, whose recent music was featured in the Netflix show “Bridgerton.” As a composer Earl has received commissions from a broad array of individuals and institutions, from internationally renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine and pioneering hardcore band The Dillinger Escape to Plan to Dance Theater of Harlem and The Phoenix Symphony, helmed by past “Art Restart” guest Tito Muñoz. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Earl describes how, knowing that he was never going to want to play in a traditional orchestra, he nevertheless challenged himself to get a classical-violin education so that he could craft his singular artistic identity with absolute confidence.http://www.earlmaneeinmusic.com/

Episode 7 we always get the giggles. -- Thanks to our Testers: Dennis, Marcus, Nick, And Sarah. Shout out to Sarah Williams for creating Petticoats and Proposals for this play test. Another shout out to Vitamin String Quartet where most of our ambient music is lifted from. Thank you to zapsplat.com and freemusicarchive for everything else

Earl talks about growing up in New York and the impact of his mixed classical/metal background. Then we find out how much the Vitamin String Quartet member knows about...vitamins, of course! [Episode recorded July 2021]. In this episode, we welcome our friend and special guest Priya (who you may recognize as Constantia from our Regency Daze series!) to discuss the Netflix TV sensation Bridgerton, adapted from the novels by Julia Quinn. We discuss how the show handles race, class, and sex in a fantasy Regency setting. As you probably already suspect, this episode is NOT suitable for little ears! This episode's intro music is "Bad Guy" by Bilie Eilish, performed by the Vitamin String Quartet for the Bridgerton soundtrack.

Show Notes Episode 203: Bribing Your Way Into Bartender College This week Host Dave Bledsoe's alma mater files a restraining order to prevent him from revealing his matriculation at their institution. On the show this week we talk about parents showing their love for their children by breaking Federal Law. (Our parents don't love US enough to risk prison, that's for sure!) Along the way we learn how to ace your SATs without even trying. (Hint: Crime!) We ask some hard questions about college athletics. (WATER POLO? Seriously?) We then discuss more traditional means of college admissions through expenditures of money most people don't have, from buying buildings to test prep. (Test prep cost about as much as bribing the proctor.) We also point out that what the admissions scandal parents did probably shouldn't be illegal since the entire system is constructed to encourage doing exactly what they did, and why the colleges like it that way. (Each generations of student loans produces the next! Perfect plan!) Our Sponsor this weeks is Fast Eddie's Prep Academy, paving the way to trade schools for underachievers, because they need the help! We open the show with Rodney Dangerfield throwing money at a University and the Vitamin String Quartet inquiring on the status of their degree? DANIELLE TURANO Divina Artisti EPISODE 18 SHOW NOTES BESPOKE MUSIC ENSEMBLE PRODUCTION COMPANY OFFERING COMPLETELY CUSTOM MUSIC ENSEMBLES FOR TRULY EXCEPTIONAL EVENTS The founder of Divina Artisti, Danielle Marien Turano is a touring violinist, dancer and Suzuki Educator based in New York City and Connecticut, and has performed in destinations around the globe. She began playing violin at age 10 and has not stopped since! Danielle’s passion lies in creating unique musical experiences for the most special moments in people’s lives. Whether that means serenading a cocktail hour crowd at sunset or performing alongside celebrities like Pink on network television her magic is the same wherever she goes with her violin. Danielle’s performances have taken her to: Iceland, China, Germany, Singapore, Kuwait, Mexico, Switzerland, Australia, and Italy as well as renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, The Martha Stewart Show, The Highline Ballroom, and Rockwood Music Hall. Danielle has performed alongside Grey’s Anatomy’s famed singer Skylar, Babel Gilberto, and members of the Vitamin String Quartet. Danielle is an alumnus of Kingswood-Oxford School, The Hartt School of Music, The Juilliard School, NYU and Berklee College of Music. When she is not performing and working with clients Danielle loves to travel with her husband, eat avocado toast, enjoy the outdoors (preferably on a boat), watch her friends perform, or make Sicilian specialties for her family. In Part 1 we cover: When Danielle first began playing the violin & how she got started with weddings? The styles of music Divina Strings can accommodate? What are the things that couples should be looking for? The types of ensembles that Divina Strings offers? How couples should approach their budget when it comes to hiring musicians? Why it’s important to hire a professional? It’s significant, it’s really big & I’m always adding to that list and people love that. They want to hear the music that they know and they want it to be played to their family and friends but they don’t want to have the recording and the words played along. They want it to be the instrumental version of their favorite song.” “Every couple is different so every single wedding is different. They are never the same at all.” “Romance is that string quartet sound.” “I want to show that love and have that magic happen even for people that I don’t know. We can all be touched by music & have that connection together.” “You are planning a wedding based on your priorities.” “If you want to make sure that when you walk down the aisle that the right piece is playing, that people are going to be paying attention, that you know have played at weddings before, and you want that magic to happen on your wedding day then you hire a professional.” At Kenneth Cooper Films our passion is weaving together compelling stories with timeless and elegant visuals. Soon after modern pop music supplanted jazz and classical styles as the predominant music for the masses, musicians were arranging pop standards with classical instrumentation. The quality and musical merits of these reverse-engineered explorations ranged from dubious - think elevator music - to the avant-garde. But at its best, the genre both exposes people otherwise not predisposed to like classical music to a new art form as well as illuminates the musical legitimacy of a style derided in highbrow circles as merely 'pop' music. Los Angeles' Vitamin String Quartet started out nearly 20 years ago as a sort of side project for a record label. Although it features long-running members, it isn't a fixed ensemble; it's more like a sports franchise that plays games with a rotating cast of players. But the quality of the VSQ performers remains high, and the ensemble has evolved from its more musically open origins to taking on the unique challenge of arranging, rock, pop, metal, punk, techo, country and hip-hop songs solely for the four instruments that comprise a string quartet - cello, viola and a pair of violins. The Internet age has been good to Vitamin String Quartet, and the group has ably capitalized on the new paradigm of the way music is distributed and enjoyed. The ensemble has managed to move over 3.8 million downloads, 1 million compact discs and it maintains an active YouTube page with well over a thousand videos - with new content being released regularly. Unsurprisingly, VSQ's unique and adventurous arrangements have found their way into numerous TV shows and fans can even buy sheet music for some pieces. In short, Vitamin String Quartet has grown into a sort of cottage industry. With this much content, pick a band - you're sure to find music by at least one of your favorite artists in the Vitamin String Quartet catalog.

“And I think it saved the day, because we didn't have any money.” —Captain Rainbow About: No place has tested the currents of change more than the Anderson Valley, a Gaza Strip-sized setting hidden in the hills of Northern California. Home to the language of Boontling, a fast fading past prose of the old frontier, the fate of the area’s kitschy tongue relies not on whether the valley will change, but how. And why. Download Episode! Leo Flynn is the brand manager for the Vitamin String Quartet, the group best known for recreating classical-style versions of popular songs. With nearly 300 tributes to artists outside of the classical genre, VSQ has garnered about 4 million downloads since its start in 1999. VSQ is part of the CMH Label Group, which also produces the Pickin’ On series (bluegrass tributes to popular artists) and the Rockabye Baby series (lullaby tributes to popular artists). Flynn has produced a number of the Rockabye Baby installments, including tributes to The Doors, Queen, Van Halen, and Kanye West. Later this month, VSQ will release its own tribute to Kanye West. With such varied output—you need experience in classical, rock, and hip-hop universes to make this music—Flynn has an understandably diverse background. In this installment of Music Is My Life, he walks us through his upbringing by a Philly Sound bassist dad and his journey to realize that he needed musical education in his life and at last to CMH Label Group.
Besides symphony orchestras and church gigs here and there, how many people are CREATING JOBS for classical musicians? Not many- but CMH Label Group in Los Angeles has created a series of projects that they named Vitamin String Quartet. This project started with a tribute album to Led Zeppelin and continued with many more tribute albums and eventually expanded to sheet music sales. These two guys have even more great ideas coming down the pike, and I got to hear all about how this project got started on today's podcast. https://vitaminstringquartet.com/ http://www.cmhlabelgroup.com/ Crushing Classical brought to you by https://www.ficksmusic.com/

Quote: “I felt like there was a dark piece of you that was under there.” -Rachel Crowe About: For Part II of this four-part podcast prologue, we return to the school years. It’s a life experience most people can relate to—good or bad—in large part because of the amount of time spent. If you’re in your mid-20s and graduated from a four-year college or university, there’s a fair chance that you’ve spent almost one-third of your life waiting for some sort of bell to ring. (You can do the math—[(# of semesters attended *~70 days per college semester)+(# of years spent in primary education*~180 days per primary school year) / [(# of years on Earth * 365 days of the year)]])* So for this episode, I went back to school. I’ve interviewed long-time friends and folks that I haven’t spoken to in a long-time. I reached out to professors, classmates and foes. And a high-school coach who once taught Ralph Macchio—the Karate Kid. How much have I changed? What did people think of me? Do people even remember who I am? *P.S. You should know I’m bad at math, so if the above formula is suspect, please tweet it out. And then share the episode with everyone you know.
