It's such an honor to welcome Giuseppe Longo to the pod! Professor Giuseppe Longo is the Research Director Emeritus at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. His work spans mathematics, computer science, biology, especially through the connective theoretical tissue of epistemology. Our conversation orbits around the limitations (or specific capacities) of computation, especially as computation becomes more and more central to mainstream theories of thought, being, life, and even physics. Longo pushes back on computationalism, grounding his critique in the sciences and in mathematics, especially as it becomes more and more established as an ideological foundation underneath applied biological research. No, for Longo the body is not a computer, the brain is not a computer, the world is not a computer, and the universe is not a computer — a computer is something altogether very specific, and should be afforded the dignity of its specificity. The title of this episode (imperative pythagoreanism) refers to pythagoreanism (the ancient worship of numbers in the 6th-4th century cult of Pythagorus, specifically the idea that the universe is fundamentally made of and reducible to numbers) and the imperative mode of computation (a determinative command structure).

Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Ryan Seaman made his way west in pursuit of fame and fortune as an actor and screenwriter. During a three-year stint on Days of Our Lives, while co-writing a feature film screenplay that was fast-tracked at a major studio, all his dreams appeared to be coming true. His Saturn Return, however, had other plans. After a series of disruptive (read: agonizing) plot twists, Ryan pivoted from the call of his ego, ie the dramatic arts, and heeded the call of his soul, ie the healing arts. After twenty-plus years as a transformational bodyworker, yogi and astrologer, Ryan opted for the road less traveled. From spending seventeen years in a Gurdjieffian mystery school, to co-creating a graphic novel series titled: The Medicine Gate, to working extensively with plant medicine in South America, to receiving a direct transmission of astrology in Egypt, and co-founding a superfood pancake & waffle company called: Living Prana, Ryan remains forever in awe of and humbled by the undeniable influence our solar system has on the events we experience here on Earth, and the path it lays out for each of us to follow. I met Ryan through mutual friends here in Los Angeles and knew right away he would make an incredible guest. And boy did he deliver as we delve into everything astrology and healing arts. Ryan also goes deep into my personal birth chart and some adventurous upcoming transits I'm stepping into. This episode was a blast and I trust you will enjoy the medicine of Ryan's depth and expertise in a wide range of esoteric topics. May it be an invitation for you to flow with the celestial patterns of your own unique confirmation and honor your soul's dharma in this life and beyond.  Connect with Ryan @ryanscottseaman and @living_prana on Instagram. It's that kind of inner-knowing he says we must embrace, not as a replacement for intellectual knowledge but as a much-needed addition.

In this episode, I explain the common understanding of the Heaven's at the time of Christ and what they thought they saw in the night sky. I touch on many aspects of the history of astronomy, from Pythagorus through Newton and Einstein. But sometimes you have to do that to get the whole perspective. And when it comes to something such as this, where science and religion intersect, I believe it takes a bit more care to give it its fair share. I offer up my perspective at the end, and I hope that it influences the way you think about the stars.

Sometimes Success Is Right Under Your Nose! Welcome to July 3rd, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate slaying superstition and having the last laugh.  The Greek philosopher Pythagorus is the father of geometry. What's less well-known is that he was also a strict vegetarian. However, he refused to eat beans, a staple of most vegetable-based diets. The reason was based on superstition. He believed that beans, fava beans in particular, contained the souls of the dead. He was so freaked out by beans that he wouldn't touch them or walk through gardens where they were growing. And this was ultimately his downfall. Legend has it that Pythagorus was fleeing from soldiers when he came across a field full of fava bean plants. Rather than run across to escape, he stopped in his tracks and was killed. On National Eat Your Beans Day, don't fear the magical fruit that could be the key to longevity! Sometimes a wisecrack can pay off big.  For Chubby and Bessie Woodman it all started on July 3, 1916 in Essex, Massachusetts. The Woodmans sold groceries, fresh clams and potato chips from a small roadside stand.  On this particular day, business was slow and a wise cracking fisherman suggested they fry up some clams.  What started as a joke got the Woodmans thinking. Their homemade chips were already good, so they shucked a few clams, tried out different batters and the very next day they enjoyed the last laugh.  The fried clams were an instant hit.  And six generations later you can still visit Woodmans for this New England favorite. On National Fried Clam Day celebrate a bright idea worth more than a few clams.   I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson.  Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.

In this episode, Kate does an unforeseen spinoff mini dive into something that wasn't on her radar until recently: highly instagrammable shake/smoothie/tea/coffee shops that are secretly tied to an MLM. With data showing that these 'nutrition shops' lose thousands annually, they have widely become known to be a covert recruiting tactic for Herbalife that are posing as mom & pop shops in small towns and cities alike. With minimalistic branding, instagram-friendly backdrops, little to no ingredient transparency (but appealing drink names), friendly staff, and financial incentives to share on social media, these storefronts provide all the ingredients for the thing Kate hates the most: a manipulative enterprise that preys on vulnerable people in the name of help, nutrition, religion, success, or any abstract characteristic that a person is both unqualified to make and deceptive in their solutions. At one point there is a tangent into numerology & Pythagorus’ (of pythagorean theorem fame, obv) cult, but, par for the course on this show. Join TNS Host Michael Lerner with Walter Murch for conversation and discussion from the new book about Walter’s astrophysics work, Waves Passing in the Night: Walter Murch in the Land of the Astrophysicists. Written by Pulitzer Prize nominee Lawrence Weschler, the book is a profile of Walter Murch—a film legend and amateur astrophysicist whose investigations could reshape our understanding of the universe. The book was based on work presented at The New School in March of 2015. Walter Murch For film aficionados, Walter Murch is legendary: a three-time Academy Award winner, arguably the most admired sound and film editor in the world for his work on Apocalypse Now, The Godfather trilogy, The English Patient, and many others. Outside of the studio, his mind is wide-ranging; his passion, pursued for several decades, has been astrophysics, in particular the rehabilitation of Titius-Bode, a long-discredited 18th century theory regarding the patterns by which planets and moons array themselves in gravitational systems across the universe. Though as a consummate outsider he’s had a hard time attracting any sort of comprehensive hearing from professional astrophysicists, Murch has made advances that even some of them find intriguing, including a connection between Titius Bode and earlier notions—going back past Kepler and Pythagorus—of musical harmony in the heavens. Unfazed by rejection, ever probing, Murch perseveres in the highest traditions of outsider science.

Digging In with Allison Dore

This episode starts with the legend of how I met comedian Matt Davis, but then shifts to more honest topics of conversation. Matt is one of the smartest people I know, and knows too much about too much, so clearly he's going to have to come back next time he's in town. We talk life with chronic pain, religions, philosophies, the mystery of why Pythagorus avoided beans, and so much more! Matt has technically been homeless for a year as he's been travelling the world telling jokes with nothing but a carry on bag. You can see more about his travels at his website World In Jest and you can follow him on twitter @MattDavis or find him on Facebook @ComedianMattDavis

When Glenn Gould retired from playing the great concert halls of the world, he climbed aboard a Canadian train and rode it north to the end of the line. During this journey, Glenn recorded the conversations of his fellow passengers and mixed them into a strangely compelling audio presentation called The Idea of North (1967). It was the first installment in his Solitude Trilogy. Solitude is when you push the world away. Isolation is when the world pushes you away. A simple reversal of energy is all that separates the two. Energy must always have a direction. Glenn Gould knew this. Music is energy. Life is energy. Notes in a song can go North or South: up or down. Life has its ups and downs, too. The movement of music West to East – left to right – is tied to the passage of time. So we experience music all in one direction, exactly as we experience life. The speed of music is called its tempo. What is the tempo of your life? The line traced by the rising and falling of the notes as we move left to right is called musical contour: melody. If your emotions could be charted throughout the day, you would see that a day, a month, a season, a life has a melody, too.Does night follow day, or does day follow night, or does the earth just spin around a ball of light? Evidently, these are the things I think about when I'm on vacation. When I'm not on vacation I think about how to attract customers to your business. I'll bet you'll be glad when I get back from vacation, right? I look at what I've written so far and think, “It's good that I don't keep track of how many people subscribe and unsubscribe, because a Monday Morning Memo like this one is likely to set a new record for losing the largest number of readers in a single day.” That's as much as I had written when I received an email from Mia Erichson, the woman that caused Jeffrey Eisenberg to abandon Brooklyn. This is what she wrote:For no reason that matters to this discussion, this afternoon I was thinking about The Trivium. The Trivium is a systematic method of critical thinking used to derive factual certainty from information perceived with the traditional five senses: sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. The Trivium – is the lower division of the Seven Thinking ArtsGrammar  – the art of letters Logic – use and study of valid reasoning Rhetoric – the art of discourse, an art that aims to improve the capability of writers or speakers to inform, persuade, or motivate particular audiences in specific situations The Quadrivium – is the upper division of the Seven Thinking ArtsArithmetic (number) Geometry (number in space) Music (number in time) Astronomy (number in space and time) Mia then went on to describe – rather brilliantly and with details – how the curriculum of Wizard Academy might be organized in a similar way, thereby giving students a clear path of progression toward their goals. Mia's note was encouraging to me for a variety of reasons:It made my wandering thoughts feel a little less crazy and a lot less irrelevant. (I'd never heard of the Quadrivium, so I Googled it and learned that Plato and Pythagorus and the scholars who followed them thought of medicine and architecture as practical arts, but the Trivium and Quadrivium were the liberal or “thinking” arts. Wow. People have been pondering this idea of mapping things in space and time for more than two thousand years.) It reminded me that Wizard Academy is being built by many hands and minds. Now in its fifteenth year, the Academy is growing increasingly independent of Pennie and me with every passing month. This is a very, very good thing. Mia is the very successful Chief Marketing Officer of a large national company. Her 9 to 5 job is similar to my own and her idle thoughts are just as crazy as my own, so maybe there's nothing wrong with me after all. Perhaps

Chapter 11 – Science the Bible and the Early Church Truth is God’s truth, whether it is found in math, science, or philosophy. Many of the early church leaders (Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus of Lyon) used their Greek logic (“science”) to defend the faith. Clement believed that God had providently provided the world with Socrates and Plato to prepare the Greeks for the gospel in the same way that God provided the Old Testament to prepare the Jews for the gospel. Tertullian reasoned that the mingling of philosophy with the gospel was what the apostle Paul expressly warned us against. Science is an aid to faith and faith aids science. Key Words “Heliocentrism”, “ethnos”, “Gentiles”, Jamnia, Aristotle, Pythagorus, “philosophy”, Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus of Lyon, Carthage, Tertullian, Cyprian, Plato, “Stoics”, Peripatetics, Epicureanism, Origen, mutuality
