Gender is often a core part of identity, and like other aspects of identity, it fundamentally shapes our perception of ourselves, each other and our experiences in the world. From the earliest recovery literature to the most contemporary recovery meetings, gender roles have affected and continue to affect both individual recovery and recovery communities. In this previously recorded episode of our educational series, Mental Health Monday, Marya Hornbacher and SHE RECOVERS Co-Founder Dr. Dawn Nickel, have an insightful, lively and engaging look at the role of gender in recovery.Marya doesn't hold back as she speaks about being a woman in the recovery space and the difficulties that come along with this.ABOUT MARYA:Marya Hornbacher is an award-winning essayist, journalist, novelist, poet, and the internationally bestselling author of five books, including Wasted, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and the New York Times Bestseller Madness. What a pleasure it was to speak with Aditi Loveridge when recording this episode for you. Grief and loss is part of life and the human experience. I first connected with Aditi when I came across her profile on Instagram and she was sharing for the first time about her separation. The way she did that really hit me and I dove into her profile to learn that she has, like I have, suffered infant loss. So much in common I continued to learn more about her via her feed until I finally reached out to her and asked if she would join me on A Blessing In Divorce. As a queer woman of colour she has so much to teach me and many of my listeners I'm guessing. This was a conversation about being vulnerable, asking for help and showing up as yourself and not being held hostage to cultural and societal expectations. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. LINKS MENTIONED AND MORE: Join our 3rd Annual BYOV's Day Party (Be Your Own Valentine) on Feb. 14th. What do you do when you report the news and your rights are being debated in the news? Patricia Karvelas is one of Australia's most well known journalists who last came out to a sales assistant who incorrectly assumed she was shopping for her husband. When Patricia started coming out as a young person, people told her she'd be in for a "hard life". But as she's grown up, Patricia has seen Australian society change to become a place where her family is surrounded by a supportive and accepting community, she is comfortable being her full self at work and where marriage equality is legal. In this episode Patricia shares with Sean about dabbling as a butch lesbian (before realising she could be herself and still be a lesbian), coming out around her kids and navigating the 2017 marriage equality postal vote both as a journalist and a queer woman. On today's episode, we're joined by Nick, a former member of the Church of the Brethren. Growing up, Nick expressed many questions about her non-denominational faith and religious practices. She had a hard time performing the role she had to play for the church community. As queer person, Nick struggle with the church's required head covering, dresses on sunday, overall traditional femmine expectations. The Brethren openly opposed same-sex marriage and these teachings became problematic as Nick grew older and started exploring her sexual identity. Her religious beliefs began to fade in college and her involvement on Tumblr and fandoms helped her realize the importance of self-expression and freedom in creating your own identity. Topics in this episode include mature adult themes, so listener discretion is advised. Michelle Ann is an amazing, queer woman of color and Filipina immigrant who happens to work in a very male-dominated field. I don't meet a lot of women in homeland security (or the federal government for that matter) so I definitely had a few questions to ask, e.g., how did you find out about your career and what do you actually do at your job? Thank you so much Michelle for your care in helping others and offering you advice about how to get a stable career in the federal government. We chat and talk about a few more questions like: - How did you get involved in law enforcement? - What was the scariest thing that's happened at work? - How was training for your position? Did you feel it was sufficient? - What was it like being a TSO? For those who don't know that's Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) on the front lines at airports. They're the biggest workforce for TSA. How long were you working as a TSO? - Any funny TSA stories you can share? - What do you know about canine handlers? Such cute and hard working dogs. - Where can you go to find federal jobs? - Do you have any last things you want to share? - Where can people find more about you? There are some experiences that humble you, shift your perspective on the world, and open your eyes to another slice of God's character. I believe being a Black queer woman in a traditional faith setting, like the Christian church is one of them. This week, Rev. Erica Williams shares her journey that began at Black Baptist church in Saginaw, MI seeking "purity" and is now the founding pastor, as a Black queer woman, at Set It Off Ministries, an international, interfaith, intergenerational ministry that seeks to empower, educate, and emancipate poor and working-class communities around the world.
Hey Everyone! It’s Women’s History Month, aka Women’s History 24/7 365 with a concentration in Black Queer Womanhood because that is the life in which we reside. So in celebration of Women's History Month we decided to take the time to reflect our first encounters with Black Queer Women and how the representation of Black Queer Women has impacted our lives. While making this episode we unearthed just how important the representation of Black Queer Women has been to us. That representation was found to be the key to unlocking misguided truths and the freedom to just exist. We found that seeing someone who looks like you living freely in their truth gives permission for you to do the same. Have you ever felt excluded? Been interrupted? Or felt shamed? We have all felt this way at one time or another. But for minorities, this can be a regular occurrence. Thankfully businesses now recognise the value of diversity and inclusion. ❌ But inclusion isn't an HR policy, D&I training or a hiring initiative. ❌ It isn't flying rainbow flags during PRIDE. ✔️ Inclusion is creating a space and culture which enables all employees to feel safe to fully bring themselves to work. ✔️ To be seen, heard and celebrated for our differences, and valued for who we are. My awesome guest on the podcast this week, Lara Hussblebee, identifies as a Queer Woman in CX and came on the show to share how she is using Design Thinking and Human Centred Design to help companies understand and empathise with minority groups, on her mission to include the excluded. This episode reminds us that the most powerful way to include others is to remember the feeling you experienced, at the moment you felt excluded, and connect with it. As the most fundamental capability needed to include others is quite simply, Empathy. The biggest barrier to get over is often language. Not feeling awkward talking and avoiding conversations ‘just incase I say the wrong thing' Lara talked passionately about the positive intent to include others being the most important thing. We all feel awkward when we are more worried about what to say. So let's lean into that feeling, start the conversation, feel for one another, ask questions and simply listen Tune in to hear us geek out on CX Design, and talk about:

Shilok Mukatti is a Queer Woman who has undergone Sex Reassignment Surgery. Shilok begins the show with a powerful statement, that gender is a privilege. Shilok is a marriage of celebration and destruction. The powerful feminine energy in herself which she calls it Shakthi is being used to many arts. The two important art that she uses to destroy the patriarchy is Dance and Poetry. She is a National Award recipient for her radio show "Lesbians in the shadows", from Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. She has been awarded many for her work on poetry and been invited to literature festivals like Bangalore Lit Fest, Times Lit Fest, Equal by Rangashankara and so. She has been expertise talking about subjects like - Gender, Sex and Sexuality; Inclusivity and diversity at workspaces; Challenges of LGBTQIA+ Community; Regional(Karnataka) Queer Art and Literature Movement and so. We are talking with Shilok about her deeply personal story of Sex Reassignment Surgery, and the connection between the SRS journey and sleep. Wise beyond her 24 years, etched by the myriad experiences that she has faced gracefully, Shilok provided excellent information for anyone on an SRS journey. This episode is also great for you if you want to break the barriers of beliefs and truly embrace every single person out there, in that true direction of inclusivity. We are so excited to have her with us today. This episode is packed with deep personal information and profoundly sensitive matter that will make you have immense gratitude for your life in every way. In this episode, we dive into: "Sex Reassignment Surgery & Sleep Challenges among Transgenders and Queers" Shilok's story and the path that brought her to where she is today, involving acceptance, path and challenges of the journey. The journey of self discovery very early on and fighting for who she is. Why does Shilok say gender is a privilege? Small town to big discoveries, and psychology to spirituality? How did Shilok make the brave decision to get Sex Reassignment Surgery all by herself? How is this surgery like rebirth? What is the Sex Reassignment Surgery journey? What actually happens and what did Shilok feel physiologically and psychologically through the process? What were the emotions that she went through? How do nutrients play a role in all this? How do you heal your body through this major transformation? In the process of Sex Reassignment Surgery from male to female, some research has found connections with quality of sleep, increased snoring and daytime sleepiness as a result of the changes in testosterone, estradiol or progesterone. What was Shilok's response through this process? What are the connections between hormone changes and sleep quality? Transgender medicine is a growing field with complex patients and limited evidence-based guidance. Androgens and estrogen influence sleep and respiratory stability regardless of sex, and the effect of doses and formulations used in gender transition is unclear. Shilok talks to us about this complexity and uniqueness in each person. Sleep can be very supportive to the Sex Reassignment Surgery journey, so if those struggling with these challenges can be clinically diagnosed and supported, it can actually help the transitional journey. What's Shilok's routine in the evening which helps her wind down and sleep better? Is there a practice that she includes into her life which improves her resilience to stress? When it comes to sleep during the Sex Reassignment Surgery journey, Shilok shares her personal recommendations for individuals to support themselves better. Daisy Catterall is a queer Maori woman living on Gadigal land in Sydney. She is a yoga teacher who has created a wonderfully inclusive community in these challenging pandemic times with her offering Feel Free Yoga. In this conversation, we hear about Daisy's childhood growing up in the Gold Coast before moving to a remote town. She shares how her feelings of being isolated during her younger life encouraged her to use the internet as a powerful tool for creating an online community. Daisy shares her experiences taking her classes online - including how she uses language to create a welcoming and inclusive experience. One of the beautiful aspects of Daisy's teaching is how she weaves acknowledgement of country into the beginning of her classes. She also has sliding scale prices and an invitation for Aboriginal participants to practice for free. We loved hearing about how Daisy has worked to make these practices more accessible for the LGBTQI and BIPOC communities and she has some great advice for other teachers. Imagine a world where everyone is the same. The same gender and race, a world where they all wear the same clothes and have a shared belief system. Now imagine someone wants to enter that world. Someone of a different race and gender, someone who wears different clothes and subscribes to a different belief system. Arlan Hamilton, a 39-year old Venture Capitalist, founder and managing partner of Backstage capital and prolific podcaster, was homeless and on food stamps before she appeared on the doorstep of the world of Venture Capitalism, demanding to be let in. In this episode, we welcome our very first guest, queer activist Seden Anlar, and talk about what it’s like to deal with racism and homophobia at the same time. We touch on the notion of how some people like to get a little taste of our everyday's reality, just to go back to the perceived "normal" afterwards. We discuss what it means when living contrary to multiple social norms and how freeing a coming out can be. The women of color we celebrate in this episode: Dee Rees, director of the breathtaking movie Pariah. This partly autobiographical movie is a piece about a queer black teenager and her difficult coming out in a very conservative surrounding, how much is at stake when coming out can have and how freeing it can be to choose a different life. Janelle Monae, American soul and funk singer who had her glorious coming out in the Rolling Stone last year “Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women – I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-fe…erself-629204/ The amazing belgian DJane Rokia Bamba to whose incredible music you can dance to for seven hours easily: @rokia-bamba-mennessier She is the official djane for the Brussels Massimadi, an afro LGBTIQ+ festival around movies www.facebook.com/MassimadiBruxell…k6HbKF8dXgXCamCQ Sweden based Andrea David Kronlund who founded a magazine serving Afro-Scandinavian fresh since 2016, called Krull magazine krullmag.com. Note: As we were setting this episode to "publish," news came down about the Trump administration’s push to narrow the definition of gender and essentially erasing trans people. It’s fucked up. We are currently working on an episode about trans rights and how scarily precarious they are. Stay tuned and take care of yourselves (and each other). The first woman ever elected to Congress was queer. So why isn't that ever really mentioned anywhere? "Feminism is still, in most circles, seen as radical... What you're really saying is, misogyny is equatable with normativity." - Rachel Perks And the fourth season of Audio Stage continues with the question: queer? What is queer? What is not queer? How does queer exist in performance? How does queer performance exist in the world? What is its political power, and what its aesthetic urgency? In the second episode of the season, Jana and Beth talk to Rachel Perks, Melbourne-based performance-maker who has, in only a few years, created a whole series of acclaimed shows that explore a woman's experience of this world: ANGRY SEXX, We Get It (with Elbow Room), and now Ground Control. As we speak - from the comfort of Jana's bed - Rachel has only just closed Ground Control, a courageous new work developed for Next Wave 2016, and there is an exhaustion and exhilaration, a tiredness and hopefulness, as we talk about love, about being female, about cyborgs and myths, and about how sometimes love is a duty. Trigger warning: This episode contains mention of sexual assault and our experiences with it. "In Australia, we feel that emotions are a totally invalid place to speak from, invalid in general. They are also associated with femininity, feminised." “I think you can be a women or I think you can be an ally and still put on really problematic non-feminist work. It’s very easy to just slip into stories that you’ve seen or that you’ve received, repeating those stories, repeating those tropes, repeating that normatively. I think you have to be actively trying to pursue a feminist narrative in order to realize it: because essentially we’re having to invent them. We don’t have familiar storylines to assume, we don’t have rules, there's no guidelines - I'm making this thing up as I go along." Discussed in this episode: that Cyborg Manifesto, I Love Dick, femme invisibility a.k.a. what a lesbian should look like, The L Word, being angry while a woman, sexual assault in our circles and what can be done about it, the validity of emotions, queer emotions, emotions in Australia, and 'Why do people think that women are debasing themselves when we reveal the conditions of our own debasement?' “Women’s relationships are so trivialized and so ignored and also incredibly underrepresented- women’s relationships with each other but also women’s relationships with themselves and the world.” Stay tuned: we have more exciting and stimulating conversations to come.
