What's so funny about Vermont?Vermont political cartoonist Jeff Danziger writes that Vermont humor has a quality of "Yankeeness," characterized by "undemonstrative passions, studied understatement, and a reverence for patient consideration."Like this exchange, when a stranger stops to ask for directions.“Does it matter which road I take to Goshen?” asks the lost traveler.“Not to me it don't,” replies the Vermonter. The weighty question of what's so funny about Vermont is tackled in the new book, I Could Hardly Keep from Laughing: An Illustrated Collection of Vermont Humor. The book is written by retired teacher and journalist Bill Mares, co-author (with Frank Bryan) of a bestselling book of Vermont humor, Real Men Don't Milk Goats, and illustrated by Don Hooper, a former Vermont Secretary of State. (Mares and Hooper also serve on the board of the Vermont Journalism Trust.)On this Vermont Conversation, Mares and Hooper share some Vermont humor and discuss how it has evolved, though some might argue that it never has. And they unsuccessfully attempt to hijack the interview but are rebuffed by host David Goodman.
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) talks with Justin Locke about his new book, Principles of Applied Stupidity. See the video here: https://youtu.be/x8VnxQP1Db8. Justin Locke (https://www.linkedin.com/in/justinlocke/) spent 18 seasons playing bass with the Boston Pops Orchestra. He has worked with some of the most famous conductors in the world, including John Williams, Henry Mancini, Leonard Bernstein, and Arthur Fiedler. Justin is the author of "Real Men Don't Rehearse," a collection of amusing behind the scenes tales of playing in the Boston Pops. Justin's second book, which we will discuss today, is an unusual look at the management techniques of the best conductors. It is titled "Principles of Applied Stupidity." These are essentially somewhat devious and manipulative (but marvelously effective) management skills that are very much "outside the box." “Landlady” (October 15, 1984) Right at the top of its second season, Kate & Allie did the thing so many sitcoms do and put out an episode that explicitly says “No, these characters aren’t gay.” In this case, CBS had allegedly worried that viewers might suspect Susan St. James and Jane Curtain’s characters are anything other than platonic friends. Episode 22 - released, by pure coincidence, on International Cat Day - features Elizabeth, Ben and resident Pratcat Asimov for a look at one of Pratchett's oddest books: 1989's humorous examination of all things feline, The Unadulterated Cat. Cats these days just aren't a patch on the ones you used to get: untameable aloof outdoor beasts who are more likely to trap you in a neighbours' house with a broken leg (long story) than to sit nicely on your lap and purr. The Campaign for Real Cats has had enough of modern, "fizzy keg" cats, with their bows and bells and posing. This is the Campaign's guide to identifying, understanding and appreciating honest-to-Bastet real cats. Pratchett teams up with cartoonist and illustrator Gray Jolliffe to give us a tongue-firm-in-furry-cheek guide to the world of cats in one of his rare non-fiction works. It's the kind of thing you buy the cat lover in your life for Christmas, full of chapters detailing the types of cats, their names, the games they play and "advice" on how to deal with them. Are you a cat lover? Did this ring true for you? We'd love to hear from you - and to hear your cat stories, and any real cats you've identified in fiction! Use the hashtag #Pratchat22 on social media to join the conversation. In September we return to the Discworld - and its most real of cats, Greebo - as we head to the opera for Maskerade, the 1994 book which brings the witches to Ankh-Morpork! Our guest will be teacher and opera singer Myf Coghill. We'd love your questions - send them to us via social media using the hashtag #Pratchat23. And as mentioned in this episode, we'll soon be releasing our first bonus episode just for subscribers! All bonus episodes will be available to anyone who subscribes, so if you're interested, jump over to our Support Us page for details. Show Notes and Errata: Asimov lives with Liz and is our resident "Pratcat". He is best remembered for his magazine and newspaper strips Saltbush Bill and Sandy Blight, and his own magazine, Jolliffe's Outback.Gray Jolliffe's anthropomorphic penis character, Wicked Willie, was the star of both a series of comic books and also a straight-to-video series of animated shorts directed by Australian Bob Godfrey, best remembered for his work on the children's animated series Roobarb and Henry's Cat.Real Men Don't Eat Quiche is a satire of masculinity, originally subtitled "A Guidebook to All That Is Traditionally Masculine". It was written in 1982 by American humorist and screenwriter Bruce Feirstein and stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year. Localised adaptations were subsequently written for the UK and Australia, the latter by Australian playwright and author Alex Buzo. Nathan W. Today's episode adds to our men and masculinities series of episodes and continues our series on gender and environmental justice. Our guest is Professor James Wilkie, Assistant Professor at Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame University. Professor Wilkie is a consumer psychologist whose research incorporates aspects of implicit social cognition to examine how consumers interpret various aspects of the marketplace in biased fashions. We speak with Professor Wilkie about his current work which draws on this perspective to examine how consumers' judgment and decisions are influenced by: 1). gender cues, 2). numeric information (e.g., prices), and 3). materialistic framing. In particular, Professor Wilkie's recent research has centered on how men's eco-friendly behavior may be negatively correlated to the extent to which that behavior may brand them as “feminine.” We also explore Professor Wilkie's suggestions on how pro-environmental marketers might position their communications to incentivize men to engage in more eco-friendly behavior. If you want to explore more of Professor Wilkie's research, you can download his papers below, as well as explore other resources we discussed on the show: Real Men Don't Eat Quiche: Regulation of Gender-Expressive Choices by Men Is Eco-Friendly Unmanly? Justin Locke is a musician, author, playwright, cultural iconoclast, and entertaining speaker. We cover a lot of topics on the artist mindset, especially what holds many artists back, oppression training, why artist are taught to ask for permission, and how to reframe your thoughts to empower yourself. MEET JUSTIN LOCKE (http://www.advanceyourart.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Justin-Locke-Dancers.jpg) Justin Locke – Dancers Justin Locke grew up on a farm in Ohio before moving to Boston. After a year at music school, he jumped into the freelance musician life of playing for the Boston Opera, Ballet, Pops, and Symphony. He worked with the most notable conductors of the era, including Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Fiedler, Henry Mancini, and John Williams. One day, after playing a somewhat lackluster “kiddie concert,” Justin started to create programs for orchestral family concerts. One of these, “Peter VS. the Wolf,” has been presented all over the world, on such notable stages as the Berlin Konzerthaus and the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro. It will have its Polish premiere this June. After 18 years of bass playing, Justin hung up his rosin bag and shifted his career to video production, making fund raising videos for large nonprofits. He also works as a “score reader” for Boston Pops live TV broadcasts. In 2005, Justin published a humorous musical memoir of life as a bass player. “Real Men Don’t Rehearse” has sold over 12,000 copies. Justin often appears as a guest speaker, sharing his favorite gig disaster stories as well as first- hand insight into what conductors (good and bad) actually do. Justin combines his dilettante interests in psychology, history, media production, management philosophy, music, and dance in sharing a unique and pragmatic perspective on the intersection of the arts, leadership, and the pursuit of happiness. Justin has also published three other books: “Principles of Applied Stupidity,” “Getting in Touch with Your Inner Rich Kid,” and “Time Light Love (Exploring the Physics of Emotional Energy).” Visit his website and blog at www.justinlocke.com. Today’s episode is a “round two” with Justin Locke. After playing double bass for many years with the Boston Pops, Justin is now a management coach, speaker, author, and playwright. We talk about many concepts, including the Toyota Lean Manufacturing system and how it relates to the Simandl technique, crazy stories from the Boston Pops, arts education, lessons from the music world that can be applied to the corporate world, workflow and timing, the "Mozart in the Jungle" effect that Justin has experienced, and his latest book that explores the physics of emotional energy. Check out the original interview from nearly a decade ago here. Today’s episode features an entertaining couple of conversations that I had a few years ago with bassist, author, speaker, and playwright Justin Locke. These have been some of our all-time most popular and commented upon episodes, and bringing them back into the spotlight seemed like a good idea. Justin has written several books, including: Real Men Don’t Rehearse Principles of Applied Stupidity About Justin Justin Locke came to Boston at age 18 to go to music school, and within a year he found himself playing every freelance gig in town, including the Boston Pops. His 18-year bass-playing stint with the Pops included the Bicentennial Concert in 1976 with Arthur Fielder, which is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest audience ever at a classical music concert. And of course he also worked with many of the great conductors of that era, including Leonard Bernstein, John Williams, and Henry Mancini. One day, after playing (and criticizing) a particularly dull children's concert, Justin was challenged to write one himself. The result was Peter VS.the Wolf, a courtroom comedy based on the classic Prokofiev fairy tale. Justin's work in other facets of "show business" continued to expand. Already a playwright and publisher, he then became a video producer, the "score reader" for live Boston Pops TV broadcasts, and manager of the Bose Philharmonic. His books, including his laugh-out-loud Pops Memoir "Real Men Don't Rehearse," have sold thousands of copies. Justin is now a management coach and speaker. He shares what the music business taught him about managing people, through his presentations, individual coaching sessions, his blog, and his books.
Real Men Don't Cry: Interrogating matters of depression, abuse and stress in men and boys: Specia guest -Dr. Tammy Haynes, Jamaican clinical psychologist/neuro-psychologist. This show is hosted by two of Jamaica's most outspoken secular humanists - Clive Forrester, linguist and professor at York University in Toronto, and Hilaire Sobers, human rights lawyer in Washington DC. We have spent copious amounts of time debating with and challening the notion that Christian privelege should proceed unchecked in Jamaica, and have successfully managed to rally a group of other secularists to collaborate on a publication (forthcoming 2013). This radio show provides a medium in which skeptics can discuss matters of science, critical thinking, religious imposition, and the seperation of church and state all from a Jamaican perspective, but playing close attention to the interconnectedness on the global landscape. Tune in as we tackle the big questions each and every Sunday at 12:30EST (1:30PM Jamaican time) - lively banter, music and trivia, probing questions... we are Yardie Skeptics.
We’re wrapping up our interview with author, corporate speaker, and double bassist Justin Locke today. Justin is the author of Real Men Don’t Rehearse, a book filled with wonderful anecdotes about his life in the music business. Justin was a freelance double bassist in the Boston area for nearly two decades, working regularly during that time with the Boston Pops and other area ensembles. We began this interview on CBC 50 back in December 2007, so check out this episode for tales from Justin’s early years playing the bass and getting started on the Boston freelance scene. Justin shares some absolutely delicious stories from his book on this episode, and we also chat about how Justin came to develop his family concerts Peter VS the Wolf and The Phantom of the Orchestra. The Missoula Symphony recently performed Peter VS the Wolf, which was reviewed here in the Missoulian. Missoula arts critic Rob Chaney writes: The Missoula Symphony Orchestra unanimously convicted a canine predator of duckicide Friday, despite strong indications from the community that the suspect was innocent. Two packed theater-fulls of area fourth-graders were deeply divided in their verdict at the end of “Peter Versus The Wolf,” although they generally professed amusement at what was essentially a show trial. Symphony conductor Darko Butorac confessed afterward that the whole presentation was a ploy to entice local youth into greater interest in music. According to court records compiled by composer Sergei Prokofiev, David “Wolf” Mills-Low was accused of duckicide for allegedly devouring a semi-domesticated mallard “in a single gulp.” A farm boy named Peter (aka Eric Wills) was the chief witness. He testified that he was preventing a cat from eating a bird when Wolf made his unprovoked attack on the duck. Check out a video of the Missoula Symphony performing Justin’s concert program here. Justin also shares some really excellent advice for performing musicians on how they can better market themselves to contractors and the general public. Enjoy!
