Ep. 373: Sundance 2026 – Chloe Lizotte on Night Nurse, Homemade Gatorade and other shorts, Public Access Redux, plus A Rotterdam Surprise Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. To look at the remote experience of Sundance 2026, I chatted with Chloe Lizotte, deputy editor of MUBI Notebook, for what ended up being a bit of a mindbending tour through cinema's possibilities. Among the Sundance films discussed: Night Nurse (directed by Georgia Bernstein), Homemade Gatorade (Carter Amelia Davis), and Public Access (David Shadrack Smith) and Joy Bubbles (Rachel J. Morrison) from another angle. And for a final twist, we couldn't resist talking about James N. Kienitz Wilkins's newest feature, The Misconceived, freshly premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. This is a repost of an episode from 2003, but with an added leadoff that we recorded recently.   This episode discusses a topic that bears constant revisiting: our pessimism (because of intellect) and our optimism (because of will). No, it's not just a doomer affectation that we can use to sound as cool as we look; it's a critical method of engaging with the bleak reality that faces us. The only way out is through, but getting through is possible. Evidence that history is repeating itself: Franklin Roosevelt's plea in late 1940 to reimagine his nation as an “arsenal of democracy” willing to defy fascism and arm the free world, compared 85 years later to the question of America deterring China's growing military prowess while also reexamining its role in the Caribbean (likewise an FDR obsession prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor). Hoover fellows and historians Joseph Ledford and Eyck Freymann discuss their respective fields of expertise (Western Hemisphere for Ledford and China-Taiwan for Freymann), how those two theaters are intertwined (could a crisis in the Indo-Pacific prompt China to create mischief in the Americas?), plus how to read Beijing's ambitions (is Xi Jinping too risk-averse to invade Taiwan?) and Donald Trump's designs on his “backyard” (is Venezuela the beginning or the end of the US engaging in the affairs of its regional neighbors?). "Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. Our guest on this episode is Debsey Wykes, a British musician and songwriter best known as a founding member of the influential indie pop band Dolly Mixture as well as her work with Saint Etienne. Dolly Mixture has been described by Mojo magazine as “the godmothers of indie pop,”  They emerged from the UK's late-1970s DIY punk scene, blending high energy with irresistibly sharp pop melodies. The band has since become a cult favorite, inspiring generations of indie and alternative artists. In 2025, Debsey Wykes released the acclaimed memoir Teenage Daydream: We Are the Girls Who Play in a Band, which chronicles her life in music and the story of Dolly Mixture. In today's conversation, Debsey shares how—more than a decade after Dolly Mixture disbanded—a chance write-up of the band unexpectedly sparked the formation of a new musical project, leading not only to a new band but also to an entirely new creative family. A highly unusual winter storm swept across the United States on Jan. 24-25, plunging parts of the midwest into long stretches of below zero temperatures while dumping feet of snow from Kansas and Missouri all the way into the Northeast.Sleet and ice clogged up conditions from Texas to the Carolinas, and despite the extreme conditions, the precipitation was welcome as drought conditions have continued to spread across the middle of the country. To bring us up to speed on the winter storm and its impacts, we're joined by DTN's Team Lead for Ag Weather John Baranick. He'll walk us through winter conditions thus far for key farming regions across the U.S. and offer insight into the forecasting of the latest winter storm. Then he'll take us beat by beat through the impacts in different regions, from rain, sleet, and snowfall totals and the likely effect on drought conditions to temperature variations and how overwintering crops might be affected. We'll get an updated forecast for the half of winter that remains, and hear what wildcards John thinks might still be at play. Finally, we'll take a look at conditions in South America and get a clearer picture of how crops in Argentina and Brazil are shaping up as farmers move towards harvest time.

We covered this historic and famous brothel back on Ep. 120 in 2016. This is one of the few haunted locations we have found in Montana and it is located in Butte. The town has its roots in mining and was known as the "Richest Hill on Earth." Gold, silver and copper were all mined here. As was the case with so many mining towns, a successful red light district grew within the town. One of the most successful and high-class brothels in town was the Dumas Brothel. Rich clientele could have their fantasies met here, but there was also pleasure for the working class in the basement, which ran like a sex mill. The brothel passed through many hands and has the reputation of being the longest running brothel in the country. And it seems that clients and the girls are still hanging out here in the afterlife. Several entities are thought to haunt this building. Fully & Completely: ReduxEpisode 104 — Fully Completely (1992)A presentation of The Tragically Hip Podcast SeriesHosted by jD and Greg LeGrosClass is officially back in session. In Episode 104, Fully & Completely returns as Fully & Completely: Redux — our weekly, album-by-album wander through the studio catalogue of The Tragically Hip.This week: Fully Completely (1992). The one that didn't just kick the door down — it blew the whole damn car up.And because this is Redux, you get it in two parts:First, a short present-day catch-up with jD and Greg — sitting in the “easy chairs by the fireplace” version of adulthood — reminiscing about what this record felt like then, what it feels like now, and why it still hits like a masterclass. Then we drop into the classic Fully & Completely episode, now re-edited, re-mixed, and re-mastered — the same deep dive, but cleaned up, tightened up, and sounding better in your headphones. From the jump, the conversation is rooted in why this album became a cultural object in Canada: six singles, nonstop video rotation, and that feeling that you couldn't escape it — even if you tried. Not because of CanCon. Because people wanted it.We get into why Locked in the Trunk of a Car is such a strange (and perfect) lead single, the confidence of a band shifting from “beloved” to “the band,” and how the record meant to help crack America ended up being, arguably, their most Canadian statement up to that point.Along the way: 1992 as a time capsule (good, bad, and bananas), the shifting musical landscape, and how Gord's writing starts leaning harder into Canadian stories, mythology, and history — without turning into novelty. It's huge. It's dusty. It's intense. And it still holds up top to bottom. In This EpisodeThe Redux intro: jD + Greg reunite, reminisce, and talk about how this record lands nowWhy Fully Completely felt unavoidable in Canada (six singles, constant rotation)1992 as a time capsule — culture, headlines, and a wildly stacked year in musicThe jump in sound: new producer, bigger rooms, bigger ambition, bigger “world stage” vibeThe American push that got pulled after two weeks — and what that meantGord's shift into Canada-as-myth + Canada-as-story songwritingParty guitars, campfires, and why we all somehow still know that songTrack-by-track highlights including:Courage and the Hugh MacLennan connectionLocked in the Trunk of a Car and the bootleg “bonus for the nerds”At the Hundredth Meridian as a national singalong momentWheat Kings as the great Canadian makeout song you probably shouldn't make out toDeep cuts love for Eldorado and the title track's intensityAlbum DiscussedFully Completely (1992)Produced by Chris TsangaridesSix singles. He has been published in 33 languages, and the Los Angeles Times called him “... a thriller giant."  He is also a NY Times bestselling comic book writer, having penned stories for AWA (Knighted and the critically acclaimed anthology NewThink), Marvel (Wolverine, Punisher) and DC (Batman, Penguin). The fabulous Fargo was reviewed on this channel over 10 years ago, but you betcha believe that seeing it again a few weeks ago prompted some note-taking. So while the bright light in Joel & Ethan Coen's very violent comedy, the Oscar-winning France McDormand, is wonderful as the pregnant hero cop--and Macy, Buscemi, Stormare and Presnell are horrible, stupid or both--the point of this fresh Fargo look is to ask Reasonably Good Questions and make some "oh yeah" type points about the plot. HERE'S A PODCAST FROM A YEAR AGO - 2025... LAST YEAR'S Happy New Year! Well no time like the present to kick off the new year with a mind bending podcast courtesy of Jennifer Shaffer and Rich Martini.  Jennifer's web page JenniferShaffer.com has links to her "Uncorked" events, or to book with her directly, RichardMartini.com is where one can book a guided meditation with Rich. So the other day in my kitchen (and I don't know why it's the case, but I sometimes get a message or feeling there that someone wants to talk to us) President Jimmy Carter popped into my head. It of course could have been because he'd just passed away - but I try not to judge why someone shows up, or if someone shows up.  I just leave it aside, and see what happens when we start the podcast. And as we often do, I left it up to our moderator on the Flipside, Luana Anders to suggest the topic for the day. And she told Jennifer: "Richard has someone who spoke to him yesterday." Which is accurate.  And just prior to the podcast - literally a minute before, I remembered that happened, and I looked up Jimmy on Wikipedia so at the very least I had some of his background correct. as it is - at some point I call the King of England before Elizabeth "Edward" when everyone knows that's not her father's name. But Jennifer didn't say his name - just pointed out that she was seeing him when Winston Churchill showed up. (For historians out there, the story of Winston sleeping in the White House and seeing a ghost is old news.) As noted, when over the past ten years we have someone Presidential show up (We've had all chats with Hoover, FDR, Truman, JFK, Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr.. and folks associated with the Presidency - Abe Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, RFK, John McCain - those interviews are in the books BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE (books 1, 2 and 3). Some of them are searchable on the podcast - Abe, JFK, RFK, etc... but it wasn't surprising what Jimmy said about seeing Reagan on the flipside, how McCain stopped by - and the legions of people who loved him were there to greet him. Interesting that he said Rosalyn was "with him" frequency wise - he spoke about the regrets he had from his life (associated with war) and the things he was proudest of.  I asked him a question about a film project I've been working on - something only he would know about, the land case in Maine.  Fun to hear him say it's a story "that should be told." He also talked briefly about people off planet - since he saw a UFO back in 1969, and says that the kinds of work they're doing are benevolent... nothing to fear.  The same kind of things I've heard in the research behind CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE FLIPSIDE KIND.  We asked him who he was surprised to see - and he mentioned Winston Churchill and Elvis - who was friends with him. Paul Newman showed up - I wasn't aware of their friendship, but Jimmy talked about Paul's food charity work, and we asked Paul some questions about his journey, including what it was like to welcome his wife Joanne Woodward home.  (Joanne is still on the planet, but has Alzheimers - from the research, multiple conversations with people offstage, our loved ones who have dementia are "90% already home" - so it's normal for them to interact with each other.  As my friend's father Jack Tracey told us in his last weeks of being here, "It's like leaving a leg in the pool."  I didn't mean to imply she is gone - just was asking him what it was like to see her "higher self" on the flipside.) So while one is watching the nation mourn this President, while the nation has a funeral for him, honoring him and his service, be aware that he hasn't disappeared or is gone: he's just not here. Available. Like everyone is. Hope this helps. WE'LL BE BACK NEXT WEEK!

Thank Jason it's been nearly 10 years!! That's right, we're celebrating almost a decade of making fun of horror movie characters in the order in which they die by revisiting where it all began: the first episode of Kill By Kill!! In this episode, Patrick and Gena will unpack all the gory details of horror cinema's least appreciated element: the characters, starting with the 1980 slasher classic, FRIDAY THE 13th! This is where it all began, starting with our own personal introductions to the Friday franchise before delving into the original film's cold open and the fully clothed, yet steamy, encounter between Barry & Claudette way back in 1958. Along the way, we discuss the raw sexuality of folk songs, talk about the practicalities of dry humping, and poor cardboard box-throwing accuracy before a rousing game of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! This episode originally aired on March 19, 2025. It’s hard to find people in Hollywood who are willing to speak publicly about their enthusiasm for AI, for fear of being seen as “siding with the machines.” And yet, many people are quietly using the technology already. In this episode, we interview two enthusiastic early adopters of AI in filmmaking about how they’re using it, its strengths and limitations, and how they respond to people who say AI is going to ruin Hollywood.
