Richard Gerver is widely published on the subject of change, young people and education. He is in fact a former primary school head teacher and his wife and daughter are still teachers. Tim is the CEO of the Sandstone Foundation which is a charity which is set up top deliver workshops on resilience to young people in schools and youth organisations. He is a former intelligence officer and sometime adventurer. The current education system mis largely guided by tick box exercises, quotas and Ofsted reports. As a result have we lost sight of the outcome which is to inspire and educate young people in a way that prepares them for the real world future that they face? It is Tim's belief that more real world skills and experiences need to be added to the curriculum. We seem to be losing some of the basic yet essential skills of rapport building, communication and the ability to endure. in order to find out if his thought were real or a perception Tim went in seek of some experts. Enter Richard! We would really like you to get involved in the debate. Listen to the podcast and let us know what you think.
On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast Paul talks to Richard Gerver about the things he didn't know that he now knows and thinks the world should know. KEY TAKEAWAYS We spend so much of our lives thinking that if we don't know something it's a weakness or a failure. I'd turn the entire thing around as a response and say: Things I didn't know were that the things that I didn't know, and I was confident about not knowing them, were my strength and my superpower. You learn nothing new by getting something right. You only ever learn something new from the point of a mistake or the realisation you don't know something or can't do something. That is the moment in your life where the magic happens and you're going to evolve, develop and become something better than you were before you encountered that moment of ignorance. I used to take criticism of my writings or talks personally. But a wise person said to me: “Those are the people you're impacting the most because you're pushing them outside of their comfort zone, so don't take offense by the people that respond badly, realise that you've started to catalyse change and development within them.” That was incredibly powerful, potent and important to me. In a time that's becoming increasingly polarised and a world in which we see our differences as chasms between us, if only we could come together and realise and respect those differences and find out how we could harness those differences to make something magical, the world would be a lot better place. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's being open to realising that you don't know something or can't do something and then having the confidence to step through the pathway of that ignorance.' ‘I grew up too often believing that if I didn't know something it was a sign of weakness rather than a moment of accelerated growth.' ‘Every single human being is exceptional no matter their personal traits, academic level, how they view the world or life.' ‘Real, deep collaboration can't come from a gathering of like-minded people in an echo chamber, it can only come when you have a group of people that view the world differently and try to find a way to converge on a commonality of understanding.' This episode of the Connected Leadership podcast features a fascinating conversation with Richard Gerver, Andy's guest this week. Richard came to prominence when, as a head teacher, he turned around a failing school in the UK in under two years. Winning plaudits globally, Richard was labelled The Walt Disney of the Classroom by the UK media and went on to win a multitude of international awards, including a UNESCO award for leadership and innovation, the Global Gurus Top 30 Thinkers, and the National Teaching Awards Head Teacher of the Year. Using his unique experience and insight, Richard has become one of the world's most influential experts on change and leadership. Richard shares his journey to becoming the head teacher of a school that had been struggling for a decade. He emphasises the importance of human connection and building trust, describing how he fell in love with the school's community. He understood that the staff, despite being repeatedly told they were failing, were passionate and deeply cared about their students and community. They were simply disenfranchised and lacked a sense of purpose. Richard explains how he re-engaged the staff by focusing on their values and vision and asking them what they wanted their students to be like when they left the school. This simple question sparked a powerful conversation and allowed the staff to reclaim their ownership and drive. Richard highlights the urgency of education, emphasising that children only get one chance and that a single year can be deeply formative. Andy and Richard explore motivation and disengagement, with Richard criticising traditional education systems for fostering assumed incompetence, stifling curiosity and engagement. He advocates for cultures that encourage active participation, trust, and belief in individual potential. Richard underscores the crucial role of trust in positive change, comparing it to the political landscape, where mistrust fuels division. Building trust, he argues, requires genuine listening, authentic communication, and responsive action, including vulnerability, admitting mistakes, and showing genuine care for others' wellbeing. The podcast also touches on the impact of negative reinforcement and how to give constructive feedback effectively. Richard cautions against constantly telling people they are failing, as it can lead to a sense of hopelessness and undermine their self-worth. Instead, he emphasises the importance of understanding the context and reasons behind underperformance and supporting individuals to overcome their challenges. Andy and Richard conclude by examining the importance of consistency in leadership, drawing parallels to the constant turnover of managers in professional football. Richard argues that regardless of tenure length, it's crucial for leaders to demonstrate genuine care and commitment to their team. They must be present during both the highs and lows, holding themselves accountable and building authentic relationships. This episode provides valuable insights into the power of human connection, authenticity, and trust in driving positive change. It serves as a reminder that effective leadership requires more than just technical skills; it demands a deep understanding of the human condition and a commitment to empowering and supporting individuals. On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Richard Gerver to talk about their relationships with school & education, and how that's changed over the years. KEY TAKEAWAYS When I look back to my education, and when people remind me of my first career as a teacher and headteacher, when I left school at 18 I never wanted to go back into school ever again in my entire life, ever. I felt like a misfit. Arguably I was very privileged, my parents and my grandparents sold their homes and sacrificed everything to send me to a private school because it was their dream to provide me with the very best education they could. This added a considerable amount of pressure on me, especially as an older teenager, because I knew what they'd sacrificed, so how could I tell them that I hated it? When I chose to become a teacher later – for the love of a young woman – in my very early 20s, that was when I first began to process my own experience more objectively. Rather than taking my reflex judgement of hating it in the moment and it made me a worse person for whatever reason, I was able to start to understand and unpick the learning I'd taken from that experience without even knowing it and reflected on, despite everything I felt at the time, how lucky I was to have been in that environment. One of the things that we should become more and more aware of as we go through life, which I think is really pertinent in the divided and angry world we live in right now where people's beliefs are shaped by their own lived experience and context, the wiser among us realize that actually to grow, evolve, learn, develop, find peace with the world, your world and the world around you, you have to be open minded enough to realize and respect that you need to be active in shaping, challenging and developing your beliefs. It's only by broadening your own horizons, contexts and experiences that your beliefs become increasingly rounded. So many conflicts, from the smallest to the most horrific, people become increasingly deaf to other opinions, values, other people's experiences and almost do so just to protect their own viewpoint. Partly that's been amplified by the fact we're now living in a digital world where social media through algorithm and the way we build walls around our own content means that we tend to live in increasingly siloed environments. We're living in a world of what I call curated ignorance and I think it creates a dangerous environment, especially for our younger folk, where they can't see why they would ever look outside of their own belief system because of the confirmation biases that are constantly circulating and fired at them. Then what happens is when they have a like-minded cabal around them, it's very easy for sophisticated manipulators in that cabal to say: “Anybody who disagrees with you is bad, evil, has your worst interests at heart. I think that's happened throughout history, but it's more pronounced and more dangerous now because of the digital space which preoccupies so much of our lives. BEST MOMENTS‘As a child, I was immensely creative. I was a writer, an actor, and artist; I went to an all-boys school that was highly academic, highly sports focused – particularly rugby'. ‘There's no such thing as a bad experience if you process it in the right way, and learn from it'. ‘Beliefs can only ever be shaped by your lived experience'. ‘We talk a lot about the wisdom of elders; every time an old person dies a library burns down'. He's following his own ambition to help people across the world expand their perception of their own potential, and he's doing it through a commitment to exploring “the links between great leadership, human potential, change and innovation.” Gerver and Odham dove into how to continue pouring into students in the face of challenging scenarios, understand the “why” behind their behaviors to help them overcome personal inhibitors in the way of their potential, and leading by concerning yourself primarily with the needs of the people you're leading. The duo also talked about the benefits of not feeling guilty for “turning off,” as self-care and time to recharge is critical for educators looking to hit the ground running during the return of in-person education this fall. ¿Qué vas a enseñar? Fum i foc.

In the latest edition of his ‘If I Ruled The World…’ series, Paul talks to fellow game-changer and ‘Mastering The Game Of Life’ co-author, Richard Gerver, about the ways in which he would, given the opportunity, restore faith in the world by giving hope to those who need it. KEY TAKEAWAYS The world we live in today has forced a global realignment of perspectives regarding the very we exist. There seems to be an absence of hope as we have no fixed endpoint. We create hope by changing the way we educate, raise and manage people, to not just depend on the norm, but to find ways to thrive when change happens. Society has many difficult problems to solve. The pandemic has acted as a global catalyst, holding up the issues of the world in stark focus, and forcing us to confront them. There is hope and opportunity, and if we need it, control is still available. In order to gain it we must stop looking at the grander picture and focus on the smaller things. BEST MOMENTS ‘We were prepared, educated and raised, to live in a world of certainty’ ’The pandemic is an accelerant. It’s a catalyst' ‘For so many of us our lives have become reactive instead of proactive' ‘Appreciate the small things with new eyes and in a new way' VALUABLE RESOURCES Mastering The Game Of Life ABOUT THE GUEST Richard Gerver has been described as one of the most inspirational leaders of his generation. He is an award-winning speaker, best-selling author, and world-renowned thinker. Richard began his career in education, most notably as headmaster of the failing Grange Primary School. In just two years, he famously transformed it into one of the most acclaimed learning environments in the world; celebrated by UNESCO and the UK Government for its incredible turnaround. Richard has since transitioned to the global stage where he uses his trademark humour and natural style to deliver passionate, provocative and authentic speeches. He draws upon the first-hand experiences and unique insights garnered from frontline education, to explore the links between great leadership, human potential, change, and innovation. His ability to connect experiences across many seemingly different environments helps people to expand their thinking and perception of potential. It is this authenticity and uniqueness which has helped Richard win him global acclaim and invitations to speak on the most recognised stages, including TED, the RSA and BBC radio. He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977: “Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!” Paul has a long and distinguished history of coaching & mentoring – particularly focusing on helping people make the transition from pain to purpose; a journey he has made himself, from the depths of a deep dark existence, to now living a life of happiness and prosperity. Through this Mastering The Game Of Life podcast, and books he has been involved in – including being a best-selling co-author – Paul also helps others to get their own inspirational messages and stories out into the world; as well as offering support to many charitable organisations, in their development & fund-raising. “Remember – Mastering The Game Of Life Starts, By Embracing Our Hearts!” CONTACT METHODS Tel: +44 (0) 115 7270101 E-mail: Paul@Paul-Lowe.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/IAMPaulLowe Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IamPaulLowe/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-d-lowe-7a78332a/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Whether you’re a parent, an educator, or a concerned citizen, you have a big stake in what happens in our classrooms – the incubators of our future. If you listen to education transformation advocates, we need to build an educational system that better prepares children for our post-industrial age. The problem is most school systems are still rooted in competition, the status quo, and trying to make what already exists more efficient. Author and transformational change advocate, Richard Gerver, explains.

Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Richard Gerver has been described as one of the most inspirational leaders of his generation. He is an award-winning speaker, bestselling author and world-renowned thinker. Richard began his career in education, most notably as headmaster of the failing Grange Primary School. In just two years, famously transformed into one of the most acclaimed learning environments in the world. He was celebrated by UNESCO and the UK Government for its incredible turnaround. In June 2019 The Festival Of Happiness came to Birmingham.Around a thousand people were treated to a day of inspirational speakers and practical ways to boost those happiness levels. It's a not for profit event with all the speakers appearing for free and all money made going to Shonette's charity Spreading The HappinessThis series of special podcasts are recordings of the day, the talks, interviews with some the speakers and even a catch up with beneficiaries of the charity. So if you were there you can relive the event, if you missed the festival you can get a flavour of the day. Oh and keep your eye out here for Festival of Happiness 2020!Just a quick note from Charlotte who does the podcasts for Shonette - some of the speakers use slightly more grown up words than you normally hear on the podcast. None are said in a nasty way or aimed at people. They're words I'd say in front of my parents, but perhaps not my 7 year old niece!Today you'll hear from Richard Gerver - he knows some pretty famous people and he's not afraid to tell us! Richard Gerver has been described as one of the most inspirational leaders of his generation. He is an award-winning speaker, best-selling author and world-renowned thinker. Richard’s background is in education and through his many life adventures, he has discovered the true meaning of purpose itself - to embrace the reasons that keep us motivated and to follow our singular path in life. But as Richard reveals in this very special insight; Purpose is selfish. It is the factor that “squares our circle”. Discovering our own sense of purpose is the key to mastering the game of life itself. After our first podcast last week with Matthew Taylor of The RSA you might not think it could get better, but it does here. We're on a mission to understand the challenges and issues behind the looming creativity crisis in our schools, work and lives so who better to speak to than a man who has been a teacher and headteacher who was recognised by UNESCO for his work turning a failing school around. His secret? Making every day, every moment in the school like a day at Disneyland by creating experiences, repackaging learning and connecting with their community. Add to that the fact that he's shared a stage with Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple as well as the Dalai Lama and Richard Branson, interviewed Eric Schmidt of Google and his work with Obama, well you'd better listen to believe that story. It call came about because, after ten years working with companies and organisations from Columbia to Canberra and Cornwall, Richard has just published his latest book 'Education: A Manifesto for Change' and sent us a sneak peak. It's brilliant. It's about Collaboration. It's why, in our #ARTof... series, we called this Podcast The #ARTofTheVILLAGE Because as we've always said 'It Takes a Village to Inspire a Child'
It is one thing to think and study about ways to improve education, many people devote their lives to it. But only a few can actually talk from experience. Richard Gerver is one of them. The winner of “Best Head Teacher” in the British National Teaching Awards, Gerver is regarded as one of the most innovative and inspiring educational leaders of our time. He's been asked to share his vision on education and human potential by many organizations and top-level athletes across the world. He's written three books “Creating tomorrow's school today,” “Change,” and “Simple Thinking”. For this PhD in Education, teacher and author, "the key to education is helping children discover what they're passionate about.”
As an award-winning speaker and bestselling author of the thought-provoking books, Change: Learn to Love It, Learn to Lead It and Simple Thinking: How to Remove Complexity from Life and Work, Richard Gerver is an inspirational, world-renowned thinker exploring the links between great leadership, human potential, change, and innovation. And because he got his start in education - ultimately serving as a famously transformative school principal - Richard is able to draw on first-hand experiences when it comes to understanding and articulating the connection between leading and learning. In this episode of the Leading Learning podcast, Celisa talks with Richard about how he views the link between leading and learning, ways simplicity and change impact learning, and the important role of mentoring. Our sponsor for this episode is Learning • Technology • Design™ (LTD), our annual virtual conference designed specifically for those who work in the business of lifelong learning, continuing education, and professional development. In today’s episode of the Mastering The Life Podcast, your host Paul Lowe interviews Richard Gerver. Richard was a Primary School teacher and then a Primary Head-teacher for the best part of his 20-year career. Then he took a big personal risk and decided to be a freelancer for the first time. Now working across a whole range of organizations and industries, two particular strands fascinated him. One is ‘change’ and why so many people and so many organizations find change so difficult. And the other is why we tend to overcomplicate’ everything and why we believe that success and transformation in turn, have to be complicated. Change and Simple Thinking, these are the two books that today’s guest, Richard wrote for these two big topics. This leads to the discussion of how we can make ourselves think simply and go with change so that we can live a happy and balanced life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Richard: Sometimes, I'm feeling like a fraud onstage. Explanation: What he means in the book is that you don't have to have something complex to say, in order for it to be significant. As a Primary School teacher, you spend your days in the company of remarkable young people; all of them are under 11. You don't tend to have to intellectualize what it is you do, your interactions, your human relationships, even your planning and thinking around the teaching and learning that you deliver. Richard has been with former world leaders, celebrities, Nobel Prize winners and their common attribute is they all have a child-like enthusiasm for the world. They have unquenchable levels of curiosity. 5-year-old kids. We learn 70-75 per cent of everything in our lifetime, before we're five. There’s a 5-year period of bounty. What follows is famine. These kids have gorgeous incredible infectious levels of curiosity for the simple things in life. For them, failure is not a bad thing but a path to something. Tower example. When kids build a tower and it topples down, they just laugh and build it once again. They build and build until they learn how it won't topple the next time they build a tower again. As an adult, we mostly won't see the failure that way. We always think that failure is bad. We were taught that way. As we get older, we increasingly tend to avoid situations where we are likely to fail, high-risk environments. Failure. We have to embrace moments of failure and make mistakes. And the trick is because we sensor our behaviour based around that fear of making a mistake, failure or thinking something isn't going to work for us, yet as young children, we don't see that concept of failure as a bad thing. If we can tap into being children once again, it would greatly change our lives. Over nurturing and over protecting the young ones. We always seek certainty. Certainty equals stability and stability equals happiness. We are preoccupied from a very young age. We are doing what we are told and we are doing it to the best of our abilities. This guarantees a job for life, guarantees a regular income per month, and allows us to afford a holiday and so on. We were trained to seek out certainty. But nothing is really certain. When certainty falls. Promises are only as good as long as it is met. But how about when they fail? Education and doing what you are told, being promised a good, bright and stable future, and have a certain future. If all fails, it leads to the massive grating of the emotional and social plates where people did what they were told, and they didn't get what they're promised. Mindset recalibration. How can I recalibrate my own mindset? Not only so that I can survive but thrive in the future. But my family and friends can do the same thing. Many people always look at things externally when in fact; you need to look at internally. You cannot control the outside, but you can change how you react to it. Reinvention. Reinvention. Childhood. Power of curiosity. Children are always dissatisfied. They are hungry to know more, be more and experience more. If we can tap the 5 years old that is inside of us, we will have curiosity quotient. Together with intellect actually defines human beings and our drive to be better and create better societies. Curiosity. You can't lie to yourself. You can't fake curiosity. You can't be interested in stuff that you aren't interested in. Sometimes you have to be disciplined enough to push yourself through those process, and we learned that from being children. You don't have to be curious all the time, just allow yourself to be curious about the things that interest you. The trick in modern life is to make sure you find the space and time to be curious. Beliefs. It’s a very personal thing. As long as they don't interfere with other people. Never at the expense of other people. People are honest with themselves, you can't lie to yourself. People don't follow their own beliefs though. They either follow beliefs that are expected of them or sometimes they follow a belief system which they think is the right one to follow because other people would look at them differently and so that's the right thing to be, the right thing to want or the right thing to desire. Golden Nuggets by Richard. Living. Learning. Spark. Richard wants people to say that he lived his life, he never stopped learning, and his laughter is infectious. BEST MOMENTS “Whatever our philosophy or model for life, or our belief system, it's always going to be subject to change.” “Life is a very simple game.” “The longer I travel through this life, the more I envy kids under 5.” “You learn nothing new by getting something right, ever. You only ever learn something new for the point of the mistake, the realization that you don't know something then you can't do something.” “I can't change what's going on out there, but I can change the way I deal with it.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Paul's Mastering The Game of Life Book... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Speaking-our-Hearts-Mastering-game/dp/1781332819 Paul's Emerging From The Forest Book...Emerging From The Forest The Mastering Life Podcast... https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/mastering-life/id1421271122?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Paul Lowe is the founder of PaulLoweHEARTS – which has a three-fold purpose. You'll find that it becomes a habit, and it will help you expand your horizons. As you do this, remember that it's okay to fail. Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone won't always go smoothly, and that's a good thing! Failure is the chance to learn something new, and to develop the self-confidence that comes from knowing with absolute assurance that you're able to overcome challenges.
