Ryan Beck is the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Pray.com, the world's #1 app for daily prayer and faith-based audio content. Pray.com is driven by a mission to grow faith, cultivate community, and leave a legacy of helping others. Beck brings expertise in computer science, software engineering, and theological studies to his role as chief technology officer. He helped start Pray.com in 2016.As with many young people growing up in difficult circumstances, Beck was introduced to drugs, gangs, and violent crime at an early age. Early drug use got him kicked out of school for the first time as a sophomore. Three months before graduating high school Beck was arrested for assault. Upon his release from jail, he began selling drugs, instead of using them. Subsequently, Beck was arrested again, this time for the distribution of narcotics, convicted, and sent to prison. It was in jail that a fellow inmate encouraged him to turn his life around, introducing him to the Bible, and encouraging him to explore his faith in Christ.Following his period of incarceration, Beck was given the opportunity to attend Calvary Bible College, where he was able to study theology and nurture his calling to create a Kingdom impact. While he did not feel called to be a minister, Beck did go onto pursue a double-major in philosophy and computer science at Calvin College, where he developed specific skills to serve organizations seeking to serve people at the intersection of technology and faith. In 2016, Beck reunited his relationship with Steve Gatena, a childhood friend from middle school, where Gatena shared his vision for a new project he was working on called Pray.com. Gatena invited Beck to join him and fellow co-founders Matthew Potter and Michael Lynn to build Pray.com as the digital destination for faith in 2016. Prior to coming to Pray.com, Beck had served as a backend engineer with Mission India.Beck is married to his incredible wife, Jeanette, who prayerfully helped him in making the decision to join Gatena and the Pray.com team as a co-founder of what has become the world's #1 app for daily prayer and faith-based audio content.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Exploring Metaculus' community predictions, published by Vasco Grilo on March 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary I really like Metaculus! I have collected and analysed in this Sheet metrics about Metaculus' questions outside of question groups, and their Metaculus' community predictions (see tab “TOC”). The Colab to extract the data and calculate the metrics is here. The mean metrics vary a lot across categories, and the same is seemingly true for correlations among metrics. So one should not assume the performance across all questions is representative of that within each of Metaculus' categories. To illustrate: Across categories, the 5th and 95th percentiles of the mean normalised outcome are 0 and 0.784, and of the mean Brier score are 0.0369 and 0.450. For context, the Brier score is 0.25 (= 0.5^2) for the maximally uncertain probability of 0.5. According to Metaculus' track record page, the mean Brier score for Metaculus' community predictions evaluated at all times is 0.126 for all questions, but 0.237 for those about artificial intelligence. So Metaculus' community predictions about probabilities look good in general, but they perform close to random predictions for artificial intelligence. There can be significant differences between Metaculus community predictions and Metaculus' predictions. For instance, the mean Brier score of the latter for artificial intelligence is 0.168, which is way more accurate than the 0.237 of the former. According to my results, Metaculus' community predictions are: In general (i.e. considering all questions), less accurate for questions: Whose predictions are more extreme under Bayesian updating (correlation coefficient R = 0.346, and p-value p = 0). With a greater amount of updating (R = 0.262, and p = 0). With a greater difference between amount of updating and uncertainty reduction (R = 0.256, and p = 0). For the category of artificial intelligence, less accurate for questions with: Greater difference between amount of updating and uncertainty reduction (R = 0.361, and p = 0.0387). More predictions (R = 0.316, and p = 0.0729). A greater amount of updating (R = 0.282, and p = 0.111). Compatible with Bayesian updating in general, in the sense I failed to reject it during the 2nd half of the period during which each question was or has been open (mean p-value of 0.425). If you want to know how much to trust a given prediction from Metaculus, I think it is sensible to check Metaculus' track record for similar past questions (more here). Acknowledgements Thanks to Charles Dillon, Misha Yagudin from Arb Research, and Peter Mühlbacher and Ryan Beck from Metaculus. Dark crystall ball in a bright foggy galaxy. Generated by OpenAI's DALL-E. Introduction I really like Metaculus! Methods I believe it would be important to better understand how much to trust Metaculus' predictions. To that end, I have determined in this Sheet (see tab “TOC”) metrics about all Metaculus' questions outside of question groups with an ID from 1 to 15000 on 13 March 2023, and their Metaculus' community predictions. The metrics for each question are: Tags, which identify the Metaculus' category. Publish time (year). Close time (year). Resolve time (year). Time from publish to close (year). Time from close to resolve (year). Time from publish to resolve (year). Number of forecasters. Number of predictions. Number of analysed dates, which is the number of instances at which the predictions were assessed. Total belief movement, which is a measure of the amount of updating, and is the sum of the belief movements, which are the squared differences between 2 consecutive beliefs. The values of the beliefs range from 0 to 1, and can respect a: Probability. Ratio between an expectation and difference between the maximum and minimum allowed by Metaculus. T...

Ryan Beck, CTO of pray.com, spent his eighteenth birthday in jail for possessing and transporting a controlled substance. He had a wake-up call when another guy in jail said, "You can either be a bigshot in the pen or a bigshot on the golf course..." - this stuck with Ryan and changed his trajectory. Ryan ended up attending bible college and discovered he didn't want to be a pastor, so Ryan went on to get his philosophy and computer science degrees. He didn't realize it at the time, but God would use all these experiences to set his foundation as the Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of pray.com. Ryan learned lessons for life and leadership the hard way, and you know Bobby relates to learning in the trenches. Tune in for an honest conversation about how Ryan and Bobby got things wrong before getting them right. In this interview, you'll hear: Why leaders need to be thoughtful in how they engage and set expectations with employees Why leaders need people around them who they trust to call them out How to look at yourself before correcting employees How to ask high-quality questions so you can lead better How to make sure the right information passes from one department to another About the guest: Ryan Beck is the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Pray.com, the world's #1 app for daily prayer and faith-based audio content. Today's guest on The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur Podcast is Ryan Beck, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Pray.com, which he helped start alongside his fellow co-founding partners in 2016. Ryan shares how his first venture into business was a bit unconventional, selling drugs as a teenager, but he encountered God powerfully during his time in prison and gave his life to Christ. After being released from prison, he studied theology at bible college and also cultivated a heart for Kingdom impact. He later pursued studies in computer science and developed skills to serve organizations at the intersection of technology and faith. In this conversation, Ryan shares how he cultivates and expresses Kingdom culture through love in leadership as a CTO within the company, and how the Holy Spirit has guided him as he and his team have created the world's #1 app for daily prayer and faith-based audio content. Ryan's story is truly one that illustrates God's providence. As the Proverbs say, the heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps, and many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Predicting Polygenic Selection for IQ, published by Metaculus on March 28, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a linkpost for an essay by Ryan Beck appearing in the Metaculus Journal. Readers are encouraged to read the essay in the Journal where they can engage directly with the author and make their own forecasts. Creating embryos in a petri dish, examining the genes of the resulting embryos, and then implanting the embryo with the highest probability of creating the most intelligent child sounds like something out of science fiction. But it's closer to becoming scientific reality than some might expect. A Metaculus question asks whether genetic engineering techniques will be commercially available by 2050 that can raise IQ by 10 points. Polygenic embryo selection seems to be the most promising technology with a chance of achieving this by far. In the following essay I review the current state of the art of polygenic embryo selection and use this information to provide a forecast for this question. By 2050, will genetic engineering techniques be available which can raise IQ by 10 points? Disclaimers and Acknowledgements This analysis is informed by a fairly superficial literature review. I've spent a decent amount of time trying to understand the information I present below, but I have no background in genetics or biology and my understanding of the following information is still pretty weak, and I've only read some of the papers I've linked, while skimming others. While I tried to cover the general consensus and differing views related to these topics, it's possible the following information is not representative of the current state of the art and consensus of the field. Critiques and corrections are welcome. This originated as a Metaculus comment which was motivated by the Impactful Forecasting Prize, a really cool initiative to incentivize sharing forecasting rationales on a set of Metaculus questions judged to be impactful. This Metaculus Journal post is an updated version of the original comment and corrects at least one error that significantly impacts my forecast. See the footnote at the end for a description of the error and see my original comment to see the prior version of this analysis with the error included.¹ I've also updated this analysis to incorporate feedback from @alwaysrinse and @gene_smith. Thanks to both of them for sharing their thoughts. I recommend checking out the original comment thread for their thoughts and perspectives. My Priors Before digging into the literature my forecast on the above question was 25% based on a skepticism of high heritability estimates for IQ, a general impression that polygenic scores are still far off from having strong predictive power, and the general view that it was too optimistic to expect things to develop so rapidly. The following analysis may be biased toward these priors. Background and Primers This section provides primers that I think are the most helpful for anyone without previous exposure or with limited previous exposure to the topic wanting to understand the background information more thoroughly. This can be skipped for anyone who is already familiar with the subject or is primarily interested in the broader takeaways. IQ, explained in 9 charts - If you're not sure how important IQ really is or whether it measures something meaningful this is a great article to start with. The takeaway is that higher IQs are linked with many other positive life outcomes, such as increased wealth and reduced mortality. Polygenic Selection of Embryos - A nice Metaculus Journal post by @galaga which gives a valuable overview of the process of selecting embryos based on polygenic scores and its use for reducing disease risk, as well as potential for increased adoption of this technology in the future. He found his way to bodyART and was instrumental in establishing a variety of collaborations with medical institutions with this very powerful, and unique modality which has a strong following worldwide. Rita Moreno is one of the most decorated performers of our time, so why did she go seven years with hardly any film work after winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1961? I mean, do you really need to be told? Moreno is this week's guest star and she is truly that. Of the shows we've covered so far Moreno stands out for her commitment to working with the Muppets as peers, which you learn more about in this 2018 New Yorker piece on her experience. We also talk at length about a very specific type of TV talk show from the 70's, the time Dick Cavett rode to Doug's rescue in a coffee shop and why the soon to be remade (by Steven Spielberg no less) West Side Story still resonates. Our email address is 120overeighty@gmail.com so feel free to reach out with stories and thoughts about the Muppets. Nest Week: We'll talk about one comedian with another. In Ryan's own words: "Running is primal and ancient, it is something that is inherently in our DNA as humans. When you run, you are connecting to a rhythm that is tens of thousands of years old. The repetition of running is also a non-verbal, non-religious form of meditation and mantra work, particularly well suited to the down regulation of the stress response. As bodyART was designed as physical therapy based approach to movement sustainability, we can ensure that runners can prevent injury, slow the aging process and joint degeneration, and continue to run for as long as they want to run."On this weekly episode, Ryan and Coach Alli discuss bodyART and how it can benefit runners of all backgrounds and levels run for life!
