POPULARITY
A great track from Sho Madjozi and Double Zuksh (South Africa / Egypt / Amapiano fusion). Jazz from Work Money Death. A soul re-edit of Candi Staton. A brilliant track form the Metro Beirut label. Zero T re-works Janet Jackson Jungle style. Broken Beat from Footshooter, Natty Wylah & brother portrait, and Mark Pritchard. A classic and influential tune from Depth Charge. Brand new music from Kuna Maze. A Quincy Jones track as sampled by MF DOOM. Plus plenty more music treats.
On this week's Red Carpet, host Jackson Mvunganyi reports on Sho Madjozi, a multiple award South African musician, who said she will soon be retiring from music after the release of her “third and last album.” Plus, we hear from the Ghanaian musical duo, Lali and Lola, who recently released their debut Extended Play, which is a fusion of traditional African sounds, contemporary Pop and R&B. This and more entertainment-related updates on today's Red Carpet!

While Season 6 has come to a close, we are still hard at work in the background, getting ready for the launch of Season 7 on the 28th of September with a lovely teaser trailer to get you all excited. In the meantime, we thought we would bring back this episode we did with The Zulu Skywalker, aka, Muzi. A lot has happened since we first released this episode and while at the time we caught at the start of the release buildup for his new album “Interblaktic”, this Zulu Jedi has gone on to drop singles featuring the likes of Sho Madjozi and Kaytranada, and has firmly entrenched this cultural polymath as one of South Africa's freshest exports. So sit back, get yourself a beverage and get deep inside the mind of Muzi to prepare yourself for the drop of his new album on the 1st of October. With his heritage and family at the root of every creative move that he makes, he expertly blends together cutting edge urban and electronic music with local genres like Maskandi, Kwaito, and Bubblegum Pop of the 80s and 90s, to craft a sound that is entirely his own. Through embracing his early “weirdness” and turning it into an asset, despite common perceptions in rural Empangeni, Muzi is a philosophical shaman that draws inspiration from the past to cultivate an African-charged, sonic future. Dani Bagel: Playing Piano through Panic Attacks, Tapping into your Uniqueness, Art and Music as Healing, Creating External Structure, and Making Music through Generations Dani Bagel Bio “I make music for myself”. With this statement, Cape-Town based artist Dani Bagel announces her debut solo project, “Magic in Her Hair”. The musician has created an EP that is unapologetically made on her own terms and produced under her own label. These songs are less distinct artistic approaches, than a reflection of different parts of the same person. “They are all just me”, Dani says, “it's not like I'm acting like somebody else”. Audiences were first introduced to her sound four years ago, with her features on several singles. First, came the release of Keagan John Moore's “Lay it on Tonight” under the alias Gabrielle, with the Cartel. In 2017, however, she released the first single as Dani Bagel, ‘Where Did We Go Wrong'. The deeply honest and atmospheric dancefloor sizzler, co- written with Caleb Williams, introduced the strength of her pen. Since then, her collaborations include Lebo Lukewarm (Swimming Practice), Omar Morto (Cruise Control) and Gina Jeans (Smoke and Mirrors, co-written with Jimmy Nevis). With Magic In Her Hair, however, Dani is stepping directly into the spotlight and into a new era of her career – one completely driven by a commitment to making the music she wants to create, embracing both individuality and collaboration. The classically-trained musician took on co-executive producer role for the project alongside engineer, Eldon Quirk (Sunset Studios) and Kooldrink – the young producer who has worked with the likes of Sho Madjozi, Diplo, DJ Maphorisa and Youngsta CPT. Magic in Her Hair draws together 6 producers between 5 eclectic songs, while paying homage to all of her coming-of-age 1990s R&B albums. This EP is her version of seeking to create this kind of work for a new generation. What draws the different songs together is Dani's musical DNA as a musician, and clear creative vision. She describes this project as both an offering to audiences, and a dare directed at herself, rooted in genuine passion and joy. With her collaborators, she explains that “there was so much space given to just trying any idea” kind of idea. The result is an eclectic, yet connected EP that makes space for experimentation, play and the different moods and moments that reflect the diversity of what it means to exist and experience life. The strength of her songwriting, commitment to honest lyrics, exploration of deep feeling, playful extravagance and classical training are the album's defining elements. Azul is an interlude that Dani describes as a ‘whirlpool of thoughts' written during a panic attack, where she met her piano as a centering force. Okay (Co-written with Caleb Williams) is a sentimental, emotion-filled conversation, that she explains that could be a way of ‘singing to yourself or someone else', as the chorus constantly returns to the repetition of “I'm ok”. Rooted in deep vulnerability the song finds the artist asking for permission to be herself. Sturvy turns an insult into an anthem. Dani explains that her social anxiety and naturally inward nature often led to her being labelled and assumed to be “sturvy” by those who don't know her. The song is about dealing with and subverting these perceptions, and while she starts out singing, by the end of it she blasts into bars. The anthemic Testing repeats the refrain “testing the water”. As the song that builds and grows from its initial impulses, it could be the motto of the entire project – which is unafraid to experiment and enter new musical territories. The album's inspiration, too, draws from an eclectic set of artists - from Doja Cat's exciting experimental approach to Ariana Grande's layered choral-esque vocal harmonies and HER and Snoh Aalegra's modern take on R&B. What connects these influences is their creation of “women-led music”, as Dani gravitates towards artists who directly express their grit and effortlessly move between genres and styles. Magic In Her Hair is an EP that aims to intrigue. On her hopes for the project, Dani says, “A person who listens to me for the first time will kind of be, I hope, intrigued by the kind of artist that I can be”. She later definitively adds, “The kind of artist I am”. For more information and interview requests, please contact admin@danibagel.co.za Her Latest single “Testing” can be streamed https://lnkfi.re/Danibagel-Testing Testing is a shout-out to loud long lekker nights full of debauchery and bubble. The Naughty Nineties repurposed and packaged for our modern ears. The anthem for ‘Remember that party'. But the music and the vibe is not the only groove you will witness. Jimmy Nevis makes his directorial debut in this music video which combines the drama of drag, the energy of extravagance and somehow makes kitsch cool. The story line begins with trans Drag Queen and make-up artist Maxine Wild getting ready for a night on stage after we find Dani Bagel alone in an empty club. She is powerfully alluring and as the energy builds in the song we see this reflected in her sense of confidence as it expounds into a playful and entertaining opportunity to tantalize our ears and eyes with a fun-loving, lively, exuberant and down right frisky display of a good time. The finale celebrates diversity and here we are left wanting more while cheering for a nostalgic soul-train dance tunnel you wished you could be a part of.
The tenth and final episode of the Feminism Under Corona chapter follows a conversation with poet, playwright and theatre director Koleka Putuma. Author of the poetry book Collective Amnesia (2017) and the play No Easter Sunday for Queers (2017), she is Founder and Director of Manyano Media, a multidisciplinary project that produces and supports the work and stories of black queer artists and queer life.In a digital encounter last year, Koleka and rapper and songwriter Sho Madjozi were talking about ways of moving the poetry industry forward. Apparently, the term poetry is not related to industrial production. However, a closer look shows that poetry is indeed a part of the industry. For not only books or the materials that make them up are produced, but poetry and its authors have to negotiate continuously with contracts, copyrights, royalties, dissemination and presentation processes, etc. The work of poets and the writers encompasses not only the writing itself alone, but at the same time a constant task of administration and care in order to not only understand the system of the cultural industry they belong to, but to find out how to be able to enact with it. It is for this reason that for Koleka, poetry includes everything that makes it happen in very different ways. This conversation with Koleka Putuma took place at the end of January 2021. Koleka was in Cape Town and Sonia was in Berlin. They talked a lot about poetry, as a practice, as part of her early biography and as a working context. The pandemic appeared also from the social impact and political power that language holds. As we know, the very nature of a virus includes as part of its evolutionary process continuous transformations over time. The fact that these new variants appear in specific regions of this planet should not add national labels to the new mutations. They produce ideological implications and spread accumulated prejudices. And yet the media and many governments insist on referring territorially to processes that are beyond national identities. Structural violence against women and femicides are a pandemic long before the one produced by Covid-19. At the present time, not only do the two coexist structurally, but the current situation generally intensifies violence against women. Every Three Hours (2019) is a poem by Koleka Putuma that refers to the murder rate of womxn in South Africa and the insufficient state and social support to end this pervasive violence. In a world that depicts so many forms of violence in graphs and statistics, poetry and words are able to speak of what numbers do not count and do not tell.

Last week, I started out with a quick measles update saying that the outbreak has mostly subsided, but I want to reiterate how important it is to get yourself and any young children vaccinated before the next outbreak begins. Israel-based Ynetnews revealed this week that a 43-year-old flight attendant who had contracted measles while working on the New York to Tel Aviv route for Israeli airline El Al died this week after a long hospital stay. Rotem Amitai was a mother of three who fell ill and was admitted to a hospital in Israel, where there has been a serious ongoing measles outbreak. She had only received one dose of the measles vaccination and was therefore still susceptible to the disease. In the United States, one does of vaccine is usually administered when a child turns one year old and a second is administered before the child enters school, and in city data, 46 of the total 653 measles cases in this year's outbreak were children or adults who had only received one does of the vaccine. El Al Airlines now requires all flight attendants to be vaccinated against the disease, and it's believed that people flying home from overseas trips and returning to communities in Williamsburg and upstate in Rockland County were the initial sources of New York's current measles outbreaks. 16 years ago on August 14, 2003 — A cascading power outage plunges millions into darkness across the northeast — What began as a damaged power line and a software malfunction in Ohio led to overloaded equipment throughout the interconnected power system stretching from Canada into the northeast United States. The power surge from Ohio triggered safety systems across the region, creating what is thought to have been the most widespread outage in both United States and Canadian history and the second-most-widespread in the world. It took around two days for all overloaded components to be checked and brought back online, with some smaller areas remaining without power for nearly a week. In New York, the city and most of the state were in the dark. Traffic lights were out and elevators and the subway were stopped, leaving many commuters in need of emergency evacuation and with no way to reach their homes as night began to fall. Some stayed in office buildings, on the floors of generous co-workers who lived nearby, or even slept outside, while others attempted to walk home or catch a ride on a bus or taxi, turning Manhattan's bridges into one-way exits. Update: The suspect was taken into custody around 1am on August 17th — Police are still looking for a possible suspect in Friday morning's bomb scare where two empty rice cookers were left in the Fulton Street subway station downtown. The proximity of the station to many government offices and the sheer number of commuters that pass through the station during morning rush hour, the area was quickly evacuated and subway lines were disrupted beginning around 7:30am. Police found the large silver rice cookers to be empty and deemed the situation safe, but a third, identical rice cooker was then found next to a city trash can in Chelsea at Seventh and 16th. The rice cookers were empty, and they may have been intended as hoax devices to cause disruption. Police released stills from security camera footage showing a white man in his 20s or 30s with dark, curly hair and a distinctive tattoo on his outer forearm, and described him as a person of interest. After seeing the security camera footage, a West Virginia man identified the person as his son, who may have recently been pan-handling in the city. No further info has been released and the police are still searching for the suspect as of this recording. Although the incident brings to mind the Chelsea pressure-cooker bombing of 2016, there have also been recent scares from abandoned rice cookers, one found in a suitcase in Midtown at a 6 Train station in 2017 and another in an F Train station on the Lower East Side in 2018. 42 years ago on August 22, 1977 — 19-year-old Richard Rodriguez from Staten Island sets a Guinness World Record for longest rollercoaster ride on the Coney Island Cyclone — His record time was 104 hours and 2,350 rides during the 50th anniversary of both the coaster and Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. Rodriguez would break the record once again 40 years later on a UK coaster with a time of over 405 hours! Here's Rodriguez interviewed in the 1978 film 'Coney Island Cyclone' by Mike Edwards. OMNY, the MTA's new fare-collecting system, sees 1 million uses in just over two months — The new MetroCard replacement is only available at 16 subway stations along the 4/5/6 and on Staten Island buses, but the tap-and-go system reached the 1 million target four times faster than the MTA has predicted. To use the system, you wave a credit or debit card or a cellphone or watch above the glowing panel. The system aims to reduce the waste and complexity of issuing disposable MetroCards since the contactless system uses your payment method directly, just like at a cash register, although there will be a refillable OMNY card once the system expands, and the MetroCard is still scheduled to be used through 2023. According to the MTA, 80% of the OMNY swipes have used mobile wallets where people have added their payment cards to their phone, since very few credit or debit cards have the built-in technology, which is different from the chips that are now seen on some cards.
