In Futures After Progress: Hope and Doubt in Late Industrial Baltimore (U Chicago Press, 2024), anthropologist Chloe Ahmann explores the rise and fall of industrial lifeways on this edge of the city and the uncertainties that linger in their wake. Writing from the community of Curtis Bay, where two hundred years of technocratic hubris have carried lethal costs, Ahmann also follows local efforts to realize a good future after industry and the rifts competing visions opened between neighbors. In today's episode we talk with activist Sinan from the organization Climaximo about organizing during and against accelerating climate change. We start the conversation by describing some of the principle that our political work is based upon, in particular that the real risk of climate collapse is underrepresented and that the capitalist class will always resist any meaningful structural change. Then we talk about Climaximo, their mode of organizing and plans for the future. Sinan explains to us how they operate under the assumption of a state of climate emergency and their effort to frame climate change as a war waged by the capitalist class against the rest of the world. MA student Jenifer Sánchez helps us think about and consider the concept of intersectional ecology to understand that slow environmental violence is not only crossed by the category of class, but by gender, race and even cultural and religious aspects. Such an analysis allows us to carry out a deeper project of critique and transformation, and places environmental concerns at the centre of any progressive social struggle.

He is University Distinguished Professor of Environmental Humanities at the University of Idaho in the United States, where he has taught since 2012. He was the founding president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment in the early 1990s, and he served as editor-in-chief of ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, the central journal in the field of ecocriticism (environmental literary studies), from 1995 to 2020. He has written, edited, or co-edited thirty books, including most recently Nature and Literary Studies and The Bloomsbury Handbook to the Medical-Environmental Humanities, both of which appeared in 2022. He has also published more than 300 articles, presented more than 800 keynote and invited lectures throughout the world, and been a Fulbright Scholar in Germany, Japan, China, and Turkey. Much of his current work explores how information is collected, communicated, and received in the contexts of humanitarian and environmental crises. In addition to co-editing the book series Routledge Studies in World Literatures and the Environment and Routledge Environmental Humanities, he is a contributing editor for the website www.arithmeticofcompassion.org.
In today's episode we talk with author, professor, and activist Ashley Dawson about the neoliberal city in the context of climate change and the liberatory potential inherent in community solar energy projects. The first half of the episode follows our guest's book, Extreme Cities. The discussion starts from observations on the usual scale of reporting and perception of climate change – global or national, but not the urban scale. We talk about how large climate projects are often designed with planned obsolescence in mind, and first of all serve the interests of the elites; about the unequal impact of climate change and how communities often respond through what Ashely calls disaster communism; and about community solar energy as an example of such a collective (preventive in this case) response in the face of crisis. The second half of the ep. is based on Ashley's book, People's Power, and makes a case for community managed solar energy projects as a progressive tool through which to tackle the issue of energy poverty and the looming climate apocalypse. Our guest Scott Slovic is a global leader in the field of environmental humanities, who has taught at many universities in the United States and abroad. He is University Distinguished Professor of Environmental Humanities at the University of Idaho in the United States, where he has taught since 2012. He was the founding president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment in the early 1990s, and he served as editor-in-chief of ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, the central journal in the field of ecocriticism (environmental literary studies), from 1995 to 2020. He has written, edited, or co-edited thirty books, including most recently Nature and Literary Studies and The Bloomsbury Handbook to the Medical-Environmental Humanities, both of which appeared in 2022. He has also published more than 300 articles, presented more than 800 keynote and invited lectures throughout the world, and been a Fulbright Scholar in Germany, Japan, China, and Turkey. Much of his current work explores how information is collected, communicated, and received in the contexts of humanitarian and environmental crises. In addition to co-editing the book series Routledge Studies in World Literatures and the Environment and Routledge Environmental Humanities, he is a contributing editor for the website www.arithmeticofcompassion.org.
The concept of slow violence is one that has gained recognition in recent years, providing a definition for events that are violent but not normally seen as such, due to its slow nature and continuation over many years. The current destruction being caused to communities and the environment in Leitrim by Sitka spruce plantations can be viewed as slow violence, as well as the area itself being referred to as a ‘sacrifice zone'. Leitrim's small population, lack of media attention and small electorate have resulted in the area experiencing extreme changes to its environment, with afforestation also affecting community life. This podcast discusses the terms of ‘slow violence' and ‘sacrifice zones' and how they can be used to better understand what is happening in Leitrim, while also detailing an account of the field trip Maynooth University Geography students took in April to Leitrim, and a discussion of the impactful work of the group Save Leitrim.

There are more ways to conduct and communicate research than merely reporting experimental results. Kerime Opijnen is a recent Ms. Sc. graduate from Lunds University and she shares her experiences using poetry and creative writing as a research format in this episode. Her work focuses on The Power of Poetry to bridge gaps between human rights and environmental devastation in the Niger Delta and oil consumers in the Netherlands. Kerime was kind enough to discuss the role that poetry and creative writing can take as a research method, as a writing form for Master's research, and why non-standard research and writing have value for people across the world. "I started to notice that the very things that I was seeing in patients on the couch were occurring at a much greater macro level in society - the issues of disavowal, of exceptionalism, of abandoning reality if it means that you have to give something up. That is why I got so interested in the subject as an analyst because I thought: We have something to say about what is happening in the world." Episode Description: We discuss the differing states of mind with which the climate crisis is currently being viewed. One assumption is built on exceptionalism with its characteristic omnipotence of thought, idealization, and denial of separateness. The other is object-related with its recognition of fragility, mourning, and the potential for joy. We consider the implications of applying insights from the couch to the culture. We appreciate the importance of 'lively entitlement' as contrasted with its narcissistic version and how that liveliness invigorates so many of our passions. We review case material, the recognition of both manifest and latent levels of meaning, and the role of 'therapeutic activism'. In this episode we dive into a discussion with Rob Nixon on climate change denialism, the difficulty of understanding and drawing attention to "slow violence," and in particular, the power of social media and using story and image to to translate scientific knowledge into powerful currents that catalyze social sentiment and action. As Rob discusses the dangers of the science denialism permeating a very significant minority in the U.S., he mentions the importance of the upcoming November election in the U.S., with potential fallouts including defunding WHO and defecting from the Paris Accord. However, he also sees that environmental justice is growing in importance within environmentalism. More people are realizing the overlap between public health concerns and environmentalism, such as the unequal climate impact that we are already seeing affect poor parts of the world, and new energy is coming to the movement as a result.Rob also talks about cultural values, and the idea that over generations people develop a culture and relationship with the environment. Culture and symbolism play a large role in making public statements of cultural values. On the digital front, we've seen the power of social media with George Floyd and the swell of the Black Lives Matter movement. Rob raises the question of how we can translate moments of digital massing into structural change. Slow violence is a concept to help retain attention in situations in which the damage is continuing but the event has ceased, such as the aftermath of war with toxic chemicals from depleted uranium land mines. This concept also applies with climate change and distributive justice across generations.If we are to tackle something like COVID or even bigger, climate breakdown, we face some large challenges. We need collaboration and government to invest in precautionary institutions. Daily life lived at the nanosecond with constant interruptions, but we're also needing to think in vast geological sense.Rob Nixon is the Currie C. and Thomas A. Barron Family Professor in the Humanities and the Environment. He is affiliated with the Princeton Environmental Institute's initiative in the environmental humanities. Before joining Princeton in 2015, Nixon held the Rachel Carson Professorship in English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was active in the Center for Culture, History and Environment. He is the author of four books: London Calling: V.S. Naipaul, Postcolonial Mandarin (Oxford); Homelands, Harlem and Hollywood: South African Culture and the World Beyond (Routledge); Dreambirds: The Natural History of a Fantasy (Picador); and Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor (Harvard). He has published extensively in the fields of environmental studies, postcolonial studies, nonfiction and contemporary literature and has delivered lectures on six continents. Throughout his career, he has sought to engage in both scholarly and public writing on environmental concerns and social movements, particularly as they pertain to the global South. Environmental martyrs put their bodies and lives on the line, risking imprisonment, violence or burial in a shallow grave in the dead of night. Some activists remain anonymous, while others gain posthumous fame and power, their deaths becoming a rallying call for others to join the cause. Rob Nixon, Professor in Humanities and Environment at Princeton University, and author of the award-winning Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor, explores the surge in environmental martyrdom around the world over timber, water, land and mineral rights. Martyrdom is direct action in extremis, he says. But why are so many people sacrificing their lives? And what is the relationship between the fallen martyr and the felled tree?
