As anyone who's been to a Nordic country in the summer will tell you, there's a certain magic in the temperate air that you only get from a place that is cold and dark for most of the rest of the year. That probably goes some way towards explaining how a country like Sweden produces some of the sunniest music around, whether we're talking about pop or underground dance. Since she debuted on Stockholm label Studio Barnhus in 2018, Bella Boo has been at the forefront of this sound, making clever, fun and joyous house music on records like Once Upon A Passion, where pop instincts embed into deep house grooves. Bella Boo's RA Podcast both highlights her distinct personality and also the sound of Stockholm in full summer bloom, featuring local producers like Kornél Kovács, Axel Boman, Genius Of Time and Samo DJ. It's full of catchy basslines, hooky vocal snippets, luxurious melodies and plenty of brilliant transitions. It's kind of like listening to one of her records: a restless and kaleidoscopic approach to house, where the rhythms shift and a new earworm is always around the corner. As a producer you may have heard Art's releases via some of our favourite labels like Studio Barnhus, Toy Tonics and Karlovak - the imprint he runs jointly with Mr. Tophat. Scandinavia is home to a remarkable collection of dj's and producers who have crafted a fun filled take on dance and club music across decades. As the co-founder of Karlovak Records and the label boss behind Velvet Pony, Art Alfie has been a crucial figure in the evolution of the leftfield house and techno community in both his native Stockholm and beyond. His sound has been well received and championed by a way of chance taking promoters and dj's who have warmed to his creative experimentation and playful take on the genre. Over the years he has released numerous EP's via the likes of Toy Tonics, Howl Records and many more. He has also collaborated prominently alongside close friend Mr Tophat and the pair have released a splendid array of music through Junk Yard Connections, Bass Culture Records and beyond. In 2017 Art Alfie released his debut album via the acclaimed Studio Barnhus label and ever since has been experimenting with the leanings and evolution of that record since. We invited him to record a mix for Ransom Note and we weren't quite sure what we were going to get. That's part of the excitement Art Alfie brings to the forefront and why we are delighted to welcome him to the series.

In the 7th issue of Czech Contemporary Art in Berlin we would like to introduce Petra Hermanová. Petra Hermanová (*1987 in Valašské Meziříčí, CZ) is a visual artist and musician. She studied with Václav Stratil at the Studio of Intermedia at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno and at the Studio of Art in Public spaces at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where she concentrated mostly on exploring the moving image through narrative experiments dealing with memories. In 2012 she relocated to Berlin and has since gone on to produce music videos for Academy Award winning musicians like Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova as well as for underground electronic musicians on labels like Cómeme and Studio Barnhus. She has taken her visuals to live concert events at notable festivals and event series such as Sónar, CYNETART and Boiler Room, and has taken part on numerous commissions including reviving the ghost town of Pyramiden in the arctic archipelago of Svalbard for a special project with the Norwegian electronic duo Frost. As a practicing musician Hermanová was the front woman of Fiordmoss. She represented the band at the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid and won the Vinyla Award for Best New Act in 2011. They produced 3 albums, the last of which was awarded the prestigious Czech Anděl Award for the Best Electronic Album of 2017. She is currently working on independent projects in music and animation, as well as producing A/V for the Berlin-based music producer Hydropsyche. Czech Contemporary Art in Berlin is an online series by the Czech Centre Berlin about contemporary art in times of Corona. We present artists with Czech and/or Slovak roots, living in Berlin. The format is 3x3: 3 minutes about the place, where the artist works, 3 minutes about what keeps them busy right now and 3 minutes about themselves. It's time to get odd. Real odd. Your Planet Is Next has been a firm favourite amidst the Ransom Note office since he decided that it would be a good idea to reimagine Cher's 'Believe'. Since 2014 he has been steadily realeasing abstract house, techno and experimental music without taking himself too seriously. His taste is exceptional and each release has seen his production process evolve in style and stature. Appearances on the likes of Klasse Wrecks and Studio Barnhus have helped stabilize a career in the strange and his music works as well on the dancefloor as it does in the headphones on a long walk home. We originally asked him to record an abstract, weirdo mix as part of our Monday series but as ever things escalated and this is what popped out the other side of the machine. We're glad it did...

Lehult is a record label which has moved from strength to strength having become firmly supported by a Scandinavian contigent of house and techno dj's who continue to experiment and inspire. Since 2014 the imprint has released music by the likes of Liem, Tony Rainwater, Johan Kaseta, Eddie Ness and more. Run by a collective of disc jockeys and producers the imprint has become synonymous with high quality house and techno, drawing upon the influences laid before by the likes of Studio Barnhus, Sex Tags and as far back as the early days of Chicago. Each release carries a distinct personality and is often built upon a distinct deep, club focussed persona. The label has been well supported by both dj's and listeners, drawing in an array of critical praise and air time with several of the records fetching a pretty penny on discogs. Magic Teapot Records is an exclusive online record store in Barcelona, but also a recently launched record label (run by Daniel Baughman— A&R at Hivern Discs, booker at audiophile venue Nica —, Marco Gegenheimer - who releases on Studio Barnhus as MLiR - and Jens Ingelstedt). The DJ duo though is made up of Baughman and Gegenheimer, and when they come together they unleash hidden vinyl gems that get you dancing and romancing. Their sound is one that has a lot to say and draws on steamy tropical delights and intoxicating world music that could be thirty years old or brand new. Their mix for us is a 90 minute live recording of them doing what they do best at Nica, namely taking us around the globe on a real adventure that has a sense of musical wanderlust running right through it. There are intimate moments of acoustic heaven bleeding into soft, drunken synths and glorious passages of churning reggae and twinkling disco along the way. It’s music with meaning threaded together by a air of expert curators.

From there on I just played music I've been playing in clubs lately, with last Saturday's gig at the excellent Golzheim club in Düsseldorf still echoing in my mind. I finally noticed the recorder's batteries were about to give up. Luckily I managed to squeeze in this Sizzla instrumental I like to close nights with."

To be a free spirit is a truly beautiful thing. Gardening is also a beautiful thing. ishi vu is both. Emerging from Sweden's underground his music charms and provokes. With a forthcoming EP on Studio Barnhus and previous releases on Mr Tophats Junkyard Connections, Omena and Trunkfunk Records his output continues to grown and develop, His mixing style is a melancholy blend of melodic twists and euphoric dancefloor moments. With support from the likes of Hivern Discs amongst others the coming year will be interesting to observe in regard to his growth and development as an artist. We caught up with him to talk music and more.

In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience. Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. Working from his hallowed Stockholm bunker with Studio Barnhus label mates Petter Nordqvist and Kornel Kovacs, Swedish art graduate Axel Boman makes music with a rare sense of charm, wit, and humour. In both EP and LP format, he focusses on playful and curious atmospheres, kinked grooves and left of centre sampling. When not making earwormy dance music, in the past he has been found synthesising sound with nuclear physicists as The Radioactive Orchestra and also works on more clubby fair with John Talabot as Talaboman. His sets, too, are just as joyous and off beat, and are as effective for trippy after hour sessions as they are for peak time parties. 
 The one hour selection the singular selector cooks up here is something of a curveball, full of unexpected twists and turns that showcase a breadth and depth of his influences whilst sounding perfect for Spring time. It's an effortlessly jaunt through freewheeling melodies, excitable disco groovers and breezy, swinging house all peppered with classics, singalong vocals and feel good gems. Well balanced so as to not be all too sugary, the far ranging mix is another wondrous window into the colourful world of one of house music’s most likeable and easy going characters.

INTERVIEW + TRACKLIST > www.inverted-audio.com/wesley-matsell Having released two records over the past four years, Wesley Matsell isn't exactly in a rush to satisfy our musical appetites. After a tip off from Nathan Fake back in our interview in February, who praised Wesley's productions, we started to take note of the Welshman's output. Early 2012 saw the release of Wesley's highly acclaimed ‘Zones Within Zones‘ EP on Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist's Studio Barnhus label, a combination of jacking house grooves and heavily swung synth arpeggios. Wesley also released an excellent remix of Taragama Pyjarama's ‘Balibat‘ and a cosmic remix of Phil Kieron's ‘Le Carrousel‘. From what we've been told Wesley has big things lined up for 2013, including a potential release of a new record on Border Community. For those of us who are based in London, The Hydra have invited Border Community to see us off into the New Year and Wesley Matsell will play alongside James Holden, Nathan Fake (live), Luke Abbott (live) and special guest Ivan Smagghe.
