The final podcast on Have You Ever Seen in Black History Month talks for the 4th time about a movie with a primarily black cast. Otto Preminger often directed Issues Movies and here he's dealing with the Gershwin opera that's all about murder, rape, drug addiction, fishing and poverty…with some racism thrown in there too. Porgy And Bess is set-bound and melodramatic though. Bad print aside, the story and the execution often feel phony. The actors DO sell the passion better than the script or maybe even the original opera does. Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Brock Peters, Diahann Carroll and Sammy Davis Jr. actually do a terrific job with this not-always-effective material. So tune in for this 721st episode as I tackle yet another musical here in 2026: Porgy And Bess. Well, Actually: George Gershwin DID write the song "Summertime" for the 1935 opera, but DuBose Heyward came up with the lyrics. Also, for those interested in my quest to see absolutely, positively everything AFI-related, there are developments on that front (other nominated films on various lists) that will be discussed in future shows. Subscribe to the channel in your podcasting app. Rate the show with a delightful 5 stars, but also write a little complimentary review. And on the note of reviews, I talk about various flicks on Letterboxd: RyanHYES. Contacting suggestions: email (haveyoueverseenpodcast@gmail.com), Twi-X (@moviefiend51) and Bluesky (ryan-ellis).
Charlie Parker was punk rock before there was punk rock. His bebop was underground music: subversive, intellectual, and a major departure from popular music of the day (think: Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters, Perry Como). He was an intellectual heavyweight, nearly untouchable in his technical ability and pushing music to places no one else was daring to go. So where did Charlie Parker with Strings, his most accessible album, come from? It's not Bird going commercial, like some have claimed. Charlie Parker with Strings is an album he fought to make. He loved Bach and Stravinsky (even quoting the opening of Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite' mid-solo in one legendary performance), and had longed to make a record where his jazz saxophone was accompanied by strings. The resulting record is music's greatest improviser at his best. Jazz pianists Peter Martin and Adam Maness listen to select tracks (like "Just Friends" and "Summertime"), breaking down the theory behind the music to understand what makes this album great. Jazz is the foundation of the most GENIUS music in recent history: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Joni Mitchell, D'Angelo. In this popular music series, You'll Hear It, Adam and Peter break down the greatest albums of all time. These seasoned jazz pianists bring their deep musical knowledge to every joyful episode to help you hear the hidden qualities that make music AMAZING. You'll never hear music the same way again.Like the jam at the end of the show? Sebastian Aguilar started farming in 1997, and for much of that time he was growing flowers and vegetables for market with his family. Learn why they made the switch to seeds, and how their operation changed when they went from market farming to seed farming. It's not all about seeds, though- there are plenty of practical tips from Sebastian's 30 years of farming experience. We discuss how they maintain permanent beds with a tractor, how they have been using a tine weeder to work down the weed seed bank in cover crops, and how they use an app called Coda for planning, logging, inventory and managing SOPs, and more!Connect With Guest:Website: summertimeseed.comInstagram: @summertimeseed Podcast Sponsors:Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support: Since 1972 Ohio Earth Food has been the go-to source for soil testing, consulting as well as the highest performing and most cost effective granular and liquid fertilizers, seed starting soils, foliar sprays and disease and insect controls. Our Randy Hamilton was born to sing songs like this. He and Danny Cox brought us “Spooky” last summer and we've been loving it ever since. Especially when we added Sam St. Clair's funky harmonica and Jack Nuckols' tasty percussion.About the SongAs reported here earlier, while The Classics IV made the lyrics famous with a chart-topper in the fall of 1967, the story of “Spooky” began several years earlier in an Atlanta club. Following a show sometimes in 1965, saxophonist Mike Sharpe (Shapiro) and his band mate pianist Harry Middlebrooks Jr. began riffing on the George Gershwin classic, “Summertime.”As they improvised, they realized they had stumbled upon something special. As they continued, the duo developed their own melody, to which Sharpe randomly assigned the name “Spooky.”The original version was recorded as a jazz instrumental featuring strange high voices to enhance the eerie vibe; it eventually peaked at No. 57 on the U.S. charts in January 1966.Sharpe and Middlebrooks initially thought the song's life cycle ended there, but a year later, The Classics IV added those lyrics about that “spooky little girl like you,” propelling the track to No. 3 on the Billboard 100. Harry's StoryMeanwhile, as “Spooky” was conquering the airwaves, co-writer Harry Middlebrooks was entering one of the most high-energy phases of his career: touring with Elvis Presley. It was the fall of 1970 when Middlebrooks received a call from Elvis's producer, Felton Jarvis, inviting him to join The King's first tour in 10 years.Middlebrooks served a unique dual role on the road: he performed as part of the opening act to warm up the crowd and sang tenor in the backup quartet, providing the vocal harmonies essential to Elvis's ‘70s sound. In a moment of professional synergy, Elvis, who was fond of “Spooky,” actually performed a cover of the Sharpe-Middlebrooks' hit during various live shows and rehearsals in 1970.Beyond his most famous composition, Middlebrooks established himself as a prolific figure in the entertainment industry. He composed for television and penned more 300 tunes recorded by such diverse artists as Tom Jones, Liberace and The Oak Ridge Boys.Middlebrooks recorded several albums for Reprise and Capitol Records and established himself on the club scene in Southern California, eventually singing at more 80 clubs. He became an in-demand session and backup singer for Neil Diamond, Anne Murray, Marty Robbins and others. In particular, he relished his seven-year run backing Glen Campbell for his Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe concerts.Another Helping of Randy Tunes? So, has today's podcast got you hankering for more tunes from Randy Hamilton? Twenty Twenty-Six has only been with us for a month but it has already worn out it's welcome! Military in our streets, internment camps in our cities, an environment that is clearly reaching a tipping point, and a corrupt government run by pedophiles and their protectors. As we watch as our freedoms and rights disappear, take comfort in the fact that the Grinders are still here to spread cheer. It isn't much but we are all in this together. We all have to oppose fascism in our own ways, and deal with our own personal stresses. A gaming podcast may not be much, but we can help spread the truth and distract the mind from the horrors of reality. Even as our country is fighting for it's life the gaming industry is still thriving. When the weather starts to improve (hopefully) we will see the protests grow to sizes that force change! Strikes, boycotts, and whatever it takes to bring Freedom for All to every person living in this country. A long list of news stories as the number of 2026 releases grows. For the Spring, look forward to the releases of Utawarerumono: Past & Present Rediscovered and Dosa Divas. The Summertime also has a couple of new releases, in Another Eden Begins and Kyoto Xanadue. With everything going on in America, the Stinkos are growing at an alarming rate. Soon they will need their own show. We are surrounded by so many horrors that it has become impossible for anyone to keep up. America has a corrupt government that is directly responsible for the deaths of millions. A wannabe dictator is changing the rules while no one seems willing to challenge him. The Epstein files continue to be blocked from proper release; the FBI even attempted to hurt the victims. On top of all that, the Grinders say goodbye to an icon. RIP Catherine O'Hare. After a January that temporarily derailed the show, the Driver's Seat is back to start us off right. Eric want's to know, what are some bad habits you see from gamers you wish they'd get over? The Grinders give you ours. Send us feedback and let us know yours! A special shout out to everyone brave enough to fight fascism and doubly for those fighting it in the bitter cold weather! Jack Frost, puppy killers, and White Supremacists won't stop the spirit of the American people! We sure as hell won't submit to people who abuse children! Join us next week as we dream about Spring and a world without oppression. We love living in a country with such a large diversity of people. We can't let them take away what makes us great, each other. (Sorry, if this seems disjointed but I didn't want to do my usual spin. The shit that is happening in America is far too important for my silliness.) I feel like I should still say something smartass... You know who isn't in the Epstein files? US!
Stop 2 on our 100 year trip through the history of the American musical: 1935 and Porgy & Bess. With music by George Gershwin and lyrics by his brother Ira and original Porgy novelist Debose Heyward, Porgy & Bess was immediately hailed as a masterpiece when it debuted in 1935, though it has been troubled from the start by the question of whether it's too much of an opera to be a musical, and vice versa. As time has passed, the question of whether the piece is inherently racist has also risen and gotten more urgent. But the score remains as one of the great acheivements of the American theater, regardless of genre. In this episode, we discuss the iconic "Summertime" and Porgy & Bess. Stāsta džeza mūziķis un vēsturnieks Indriķis Veitners. Producente Anete Ašmane-Vilsone. 1990. gadu sākumā Latvijā bija ļoti attīstīta pašdarbības pūtēju orķestru kustība, kuros tolaik muzicēja praktiski visi jaunās paaudzes pūšaminstrumentu mūziķi. Daudziem šīs paaudzes mūziķiem bija liela interese par džeza mūziku, un no dažiem orķestriem izveidojās bigbendi – džeza orķestri. Tā notika ar pūtēju orķestri “Sīriuss”, no kura 1992. gadā radās bigbends “VOLO”.

Shauhin Davari Recaps Survivor 49 Ep 12 Survivor 49 is reaching its breaking point, and Rob Cesternino teams up with Survivor 48's Shauhin Davari for a recap of the penultimate episode. With the finale days away, Rob and Shauhin spotlight the rapidly-shifting alliances, dramatic advantage plays, and emotional reward moments that have shaped the hurricane of strategy at camp. Every move matters as players like Sophi, Savannah, and Rizzo jockey for position on their way to Tribal Council. Rob and Shauhin dissect Sophi's high-tension Knowledge Is Power play, debating whether her shot at flipping the game came just a bit too late. Rizzo's idol theatrics spark major debate, with Shauhin providing insight into the bluffing and social reads that let him slip through more than one dangerous vote. The duo weighs Savannah's clutch challenge wins, and how being a physical force keeps her in the spotlight (and on everyone's target list). Featured Musician: Syd Burnham THE VIDEO: [After THE JUMP: Things discussable.] --------------------- 1. USC Preview: Offense starts at the top Maiva is getting 12 YPA vs blitzes, so maybe don't Wink so much in this game. They're using a lot more 12 personnel and splitbacks this year as well so it's not just your standard Lincoln Riley spread. It's still Lincoln Riley though, and it's been murder on a mostly bad offense. A big reason is the All-American slot/flanker Makai Lemon. There aren't as many outside guys as last year but they kept their two favorites; Ja'Kobi Lane is back and huge, but freshman Tanook Hines is getting most of the snaps at the other side. You do have to be wary of tight end Lake McRee and JUCO RB Waymond Jordan. OL might be better than they were against Illinois, when they had some significant injuries; we expect LT Elijah Paige to be back but not center Killian O'Connor, so they'll have to play 7th year senior J'Onre Reed. 2. USC Preview: Defense starts at 19:15 Not the offense. D'Anton Lynn is on the Ravens tree but he's not having the same success, mostly because they can't seem to get the defensive line up to size. Devan Thompkins is 290, Jide Abasiri is 295. Edges were highly ranked (Anthony Lucas was a pre-Elston Michigan target) but sophomore Kameryn Crawford isn't panning out like a top-100 is supposed to. They added Portal #25 Keeshawn Silver from Kentucky and a 5-star freshman, but they haven't changed that math, and are getting pushed around. We do still like Kamari Ramsey, who came with Lynn from UCLA and has been playing nickel this year. Cornerbacks are tall. 3. Wisconsin After Review starts at 36:56 Underwood is coming along, the RBs are elite, and Andrew Marsh is happening. Still have McCulley the #1 with a bullet, and it's nice to see they're giving him leapy chances now. Not sure where PFF (and Sam apparently) are getting the bad pass protection grades for the tackles, because we thought they were fine. The young OL have mistakes but they fix them, and they all have the talent. Fire blitzes were the order of the day. Weird seeing this defense spill but that's what they do sometimes I guess. Rod Moore's return was a bigger deal than you think. Seth's not as mad at Wink as you think. 4. Around the Big Ten starts at 52:45 There are some pretty big games this weekend (and that's more interesting than hockey vs Mercyhurst) so we previewed each of them. Indiana at Oregon: "…is a top-ten matchup" means Okay grandpa let's get you back to a home. Oregon by 7. If IU's OL is legit they can win and if they can beat Oregon there's no ceiling on this team. I can't believe in Indiana! Ohio State at Illinois: They'll lean. UCLA at Michigan State: What's funnier: MSU losing at home to UCLA or UCLA immediately losing by like 60 after beating Penn State? MSU fans are already saying Jonathan Smith doesn't have That Dawg in him. He seems like a normal human being, not an angry little dwarf. Nebraska at Maryland: Interesting game with what happened with Maryland last week. They are throwing many screens. Rutgers at Washington: Expect a high-scoring game. Would like this game on the opposite coast but Rutgers's offense is hit or miss and three time zones suggests miss. Northwestern at Penn State: PSU fans are already salty after the Eagles and Gavin McKenna/PSU hockey just lost to Clarkston. If you have one punt there could be a riot; OTOH Penn State fans respect Northwestern's big win over a tough UCLA team. Iowa at Wisconsin: euugh. Special teams malfeasance by Wisconsin will ruin them. Purdue at Minnesota: Vaguely watchable? Featured Artist: Marcus: Syd Burnham Okay reader who keeps asking: this is when I'll do Syd Burnham (now Osten; she got married this summer, but kept the performing name). Syd is an indie rock musician and graphic designer from Detroit who mixes a bunch of genres (jazz, singer-songwriter, etc.) to come up with a unique sound. She made an impact with her debut EP "The Yellow Album," at the age of 16, followed by her album "Timeline" at 19. She has since released hit singles like "Summertime," "4 A Grl," "Milky," and "By Then" but her live performances are what carved out a dedicated audience in the Detroit music scene. Syd goes up there with just a guitar and her voice but has a magnetic stage presence who incorporates her modern art into the music, and incorporates local themes into the artwork. Episode 190: End of Summer Special 2025 (Part 2) – The Alarm & Duran Duran Brian and Sarah are back and ready to continue their discussion of a couple of ‘summery' songs, as the summer draws closer to an end in the Northern Hemisphere. (For those in the Southern Hemisphere, maybe think of this as a summer preview!) As in the previous episode, the first song selection comes from Sarah. She chose the 1987 single “Rain in the Summertime” by The Alarm. This song was released in advance of The Alarm's third studio album “Eye of the Hurricane,” which Sarah explains was a tumultuous period in the band's history. She recounts stories of the song's creation and recording which expose some of the difficulties with and among bandmates. However, the anecdotes also reveal some surprising uses of computer technology for the time. Both hosts mention comparisons and similarities between The Alarm and U2, even down to the desert setting of this song's video. In discussing the video, Sarah can't help but bring up a pet peeve of hers when watching movies—a phenomenon Brian says is often identified with the classic film “Casablanca.” After wrapping up the discussion on Sarah's song, it's time for Brian to reveal his second selection. He chose the 1990 single from Duran Duran, “Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over).” With his selection, Brian shares a “hot take”-- his great love of the 1990 album Liberty. He confesses this love caused his research for the song to stray into research for the entire album, which he then had to reign in. However, since he did take the time and effort to do the work, he decides to share a few tidbits regarding Liberty as well. 1990 was an interesting time for Duran Duran—the band's lineup had changed yet again, and they were in kind of a limbo period compared to the widespread popularity and exposure they experienced in the first half of the 1980s. Brian reveals some thoughts Simon LeBon shared about Liberty and its place in the Duran Duran catalog, and both hosts talk about highlights on the album. The discussion of the video for “Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over)” finds Sarah rather confused about what she's seeing, at least some of the time. Brian brings up a funny story about the frequently-shirtless Warren Cuccurullo and how that affected the rest of the band. And Brian is thrilled when Sarah references Dead or Alive!
