How can we grow into our full potential?—living up to what we know is the best version of ourselves, actualizing our goals, and expressing our deepest purpose in a life of impact and love?Grounded in cognitive science and psychology, best-selling author, podcaster, educator and researcher Scott Barry Kaufman believes that we need to redefine our understanding of greatness and excellence to include our whole selves—our emotions, dreams, failures, and gifts—all to live a life that is fully human, fully yourself. In this conversation with Scott Barry Kaufman, we discuss:Education and formation for the whole person, not just our intellect but our bodies, emotions, and spiritualityMaslow's hierarchy of needs and the journey that leads to self-actualizationThe difference it makes to see the world through growth rather than our deficienciesWhat it means to thrive even in the midst of mental illnessThe horizontal dimensions of transcendenceAnd how to connect and align with your deepest valuesEpisode Highlights“You can be mentally ill and thriving.”“Self-actualization is bringing your whole self to the table—not just one part of you.”“Real transcendence is about becoming one with the world—not being more enlightened than others.”“People are far more likely to demand respect than to give it.”“Only you can walk the path.”Helpful Links and ResourcesVisit scottbarrykaufman.comThe Psychology Podcast with Scott Barry KaufmanChoose Growth Workbook by Kaufman & Feingold*Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization,* by Scott Barry KaufmanScientific American: Spiritual NarcissismThe Lights Triad Personality TestSensitive Men Rising DocumentaryMaslow's Hierarchy of Needs Reimagined – Big ThinkCorey Mascara Podcast on ValuesShow NotesOrigin Story and Human ComplexityScott shares his journey from being labeled “ungifted” with an auditory disability to becoming a cognitive scientist.A pivotal teacher asked, “What are you still doing here?”—sparking self-belief and ambition.“I was a champion for the quirky kids from the start.”His work has shifted from an early obsession with greatness to a lifelong pursuit of self-actualization.“Greatness is tied up in power and status. Self-actualization is about bringing your whole self.”Reimagining Maslow & The Sailboat MetaphorKaufman replaces the hierarchy of needs with a dynamic sailboat metaphor. The boat represents safety (security, connection, self-esteem); the sail represents growth and transcendence.“Unless we open our sail and become vulnerable to the wind, we can't move toward what matters.”Adds collective dimension: “There are other boats in the sea. Some people forget that.”Contrasts “horizontal transcendence” (connection) with “spiritual narcissism” (superiority).Mental Illness, Creativity, and ThrivingChallenges the binary between wellness and illness: “You can be mentally ill and thriving.”Cites research showing creative strengths in children of those with mental illness.“They get the goodies without the baddies—the imagination without the psychosis.”Dismantles false dichotomies in psychiatry: labels vs. lived experience.Encourages integration rather than repression of neurodivergence and emotion.Alignment, Identity, and Individual GrowthAlignment—not perfection—is the goal of self-actualization.“Self-actualization coaching isn't about judgment. What do you say yes and no to?“Ask: What's my reason for being? What legacy do I want to leave?”Moral Psychology and MatteringDiscusses mattering and the perils of performative self-importance.“Some people matter too much… they take up so much space, there's no room for others.”Proposes a “mattering ecology” for shared dignity and contribution. On moral flexibility: “People who scream loudest often don't like themselves.”Calls for emotional regulation, reflection, and collective moral grounding in a polarized world.Relationships, Whole Love, and SpiritualityIntroduces the concept of “whole love”—where all parts of the self are seen, accepted, and growing together.“It's as simple and as hard as that.”Critiques spiritual narcissism and “dark empaths” who use others for ego validation.Real empathy requires asking: “Am I helping this person for their sake—or because I need to be needed?”“Good character doesn't need an excuse.”Practical Takeaways & Coaching ToolsDirects listeners to Choose Growth, a practical workbook co-authored with Dr. Jordan Feingold.Reflection prompts: What am I proud of? In this episode of the Fueling Creativity podcast, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood interview cognitive scientist and humanistic psychologist, Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, about his most recent book, Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization. In this book, he reimagines Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Dr. Kaufman shares his discoveries from diving deep into the psychological theories of Abraham Maslow, highlighting powerful thoughts on how educators can establish a safe environment with students and how feelings of uncertainty and insecurity play a major role in a child's ability to learn. Dr. Kaufman also speaks on why exploration is a key driver of creativity as well as how to encourage students to be open to new experiences, be aware of their judgments and biases, and find meaning in life. You'll hear a fascinating analogy of how life is like a sailboat and how microconnections can help you establish meaningful relationships with your students and colleagues. Plus, Dr. Kaufman sheds light on how twice-exceptional students develop different skillsets, along with what educators can do to maximize their potential in the classroom. Dr. Kaufman's Tips for Teachers: Be open to new ports that you might be wanting to sail to throughout your semester. Encourage respectful dissent in your classroom. Model openness for your students. Today, Charles and Robert discuss a new wave of positive psychology and a re-imagining of Maslow's Hierarchy by Scott Barry Kaufman called https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/49625550 (Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization). Kaufman updates Maslow's hierarchy with a more practical sailboat metaphor which you can learn more about https://scottbarrykaufman.com/sailboat-metaphor/ (on his website). Instead of a pyramid, which implies climbing towards the pinnacle, and anchoring to a specific level - we talk about a much more flexible model of a sailboat navigating the ocean with other people/boats around us. We think this is a great metaphor for personal and professional lives and hope you get something out of it as well. *There was a previous version of this episode that cut off part of the introduction. The audio is now fixed!* Earlier this year, Moriah read Scott Barry Kaufman's book Ungifted, which explores conventional wisdom about the childhood predictors of adult success and argues for an approach to intelligence that values each person's skills, passions, and goals. Scott weaves his personal narrative of being an ungifted student into the book and Moriah saw her own experiences related to how she learned to perceive her intelligence and how she got into college reflected in his story. Moriah deeply connected to Scott's story and for the first time, she felt a little less ashamed of her academic path. In fact, it seemed like Scott was narrating Moriah's own life at points, and she soon found out that they attended the same high school! In this episode, Moriah speaks to Scott about growing up with a learning disability, being the underdog, and integrating adverse experiences into our lives to become self-actualized. Moriah also opens the episode with her shame story!! Which she is very nervous about! And lastly, Scott recently released his new book Transcend: The New Science of Self Actualization, which we touch on in this episode with varying degrees of success. Everyone says, "Flatten the curve." But there are two curves. We all know the main one: the spread of coronavirus. The other curve is the spread of psychological viruses; fear, anxiety, worry and panic. We're all experiencing Maslow's hierarchy of needs. We started out attacking each other for basic items like toilet paper, then we moved on to connection (Zoom calls and FaceTime), but how do we get to the top of the pyramid (i.e. self-actualization)? I called up Scott Barry Kaufman, a humanistic psychologist and author of "Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization." And he had a lot of practical advice. One of his tips: We don't have to worry about finding our one true purpose. We just need to find a purpose right now and pursue it. This episode will help make a roadmap for finding your purpose and fulfillment while stuck in Quarantine. And after. I write about all my podcasts! Welcome back to the 40th episode of the Hard Thing Podcast. Before we get to the show go to https://mailchi.mp/5e94a17af33d/thehardthingpodcast (https://mailchi.mp/5e94a17af33d/thehardthingpodcast) To give me feedback. Today, I share my conversation with Scott Barry Kaufman. He is a psychologist as the author of the new book https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-New-Science-Self-Actualization/dp/B082J63D8Q/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=transcend&qid=1585570240&s=books&sr=1-1 (Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization). The book comes out on April 7th and is available for pre-order. Scott also hosts the https://scottbarrykaufman.com/podcast/ (Psychology Podcast) and is reachable at https://scottbarrykaufman.com/ (https://scottbarrykaufman.com/). Today we talk about psychology, specifically about Maslow's theory of needs and how most of what we thought Maslow talked about is not completely true. Scott helps put Maslow's work in the right context. I appreciated today's conversation because I've always been fascinated with the “Hierarchy of Needs” and today we talk about that in depth. Scott has left you some action items. The New Science of Self Actualization with Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman ---------------------------When I feel frustrated with my place in the world, it's often because I feel I'm not living up to my full potential. I have more to offer, more to give - and yet I'm not making it happen. Maslow defined this desire to become our best self as the need to self-actualize. But how do we do this? Achievement triggers the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. Our brain lights up with happy chemicals as we become our best selves, and the opposite is true when we play small. On this week's podcast, you'll meet a psychologist whose work focuses on creativity, talent, self-achievement, and actualization. Listen & Learn How people with obvious challenges and even disadvantages can often out-perform their gifted colleagues Why standardized tests often fail to predict actual potential How to look past intelligence and talent and focus on you vs. you Why you have to transcend yourself to self actualize Links & Resources Scott's Website ABOUT OUR GUEST Scott Barry Kaufman is a humanistic psychologist, author, podcaster, and popular science writer.
