El vicepresidente de la plataforma ‘Una Policía para el siglo XXI', Josema Vallejo analiza el problema de la inseguridad en los barrios

José Santos Chocano (14 mayo 1875, Lima – 13 diciembre 1934, Santiago) fue un destacado poeta peruano conocido como “El Cantor de América” y considerado uno de los más importantes en el modernismo hispanoamericano. Nació en Lima en plena ocupación chilena y, a los 20 años, fue encarcelado por participar en movimientos subversivos contra Andrés A. Cáceres. Tras ser liberado en 1895, publicó obras como Iras santas, En la aldea, Azahares, Selva virgen y La epopeya del Morro, destacando por su virtuosismo formal. Su colección Alma América (1906), con prólogo de Unamuno, buscaba retratar el “alma” de América para distinguirla del afinesamiento de Rubén Darío. Su estética, rica en color, ritmo y referencias al paisaje americano lo define como un mundonovista. Trabajó como diplomático en Colombia, España, Guatemala y México, y fue consejero de líderes como Pancho Villa, Estrada Cabrera y amistó con Woodrow Wilson. En 1922 fue nombrado “Poeta de América” y recibió una corona de laureles de oro de manos del presidente Augusto B. Leguía. En 1925, luego de un altercado con el periodista Edwin Elmore, Chocano le disparó en el diario El Comercio, provocando su muerte; fue sentenciado, pero pasó solo dos o tres años en prisión. En 1934, fue apuñalado en un tranvía por un hombre que afirmaba buscar un tesoro con él. El agresor, diagnosticado con esquizofrenia paranoide, fue internado en un manicomio, mientras Chocano murió casi al instante de la herida. En 1965, sus restos fueron repatriados a Lima y enterrados “de pie en un metro cuadrado”, como había solicitado poéticamente. Obras representativas: Iras santas, En la aldea 1895. Debut lírico. Azahares 1896. Poesía amatoria. La epopeya del Morro 1899. Poema histórico sobre la batalla de Arica. Alma América 1906. Declaración de identidad americana, prólogo de Unamuno.Fiat Lux! 1908. Recopilación acompañada por Rubén Darío.Primicias de Oro de Indias 1934. Última obra póstuma. Fue un pionero del modernismo americano, privilegiando temas nacionales frente al parnasianismo europeo. Su poesía, marcada por la grandilocuencia y el color, influenció a figuras como Pablo Neruda (Canto General) y poetas nicaragüenses. Su fama popular llegó a igualar la de Ricardo Palma en su época, aunque críticas posteriores destacaron la evolución hacia César Vallejo. José Santos Chocano fue un poeta magnífico y complejo: su lírica épica definió una voz nueva para América Latina, pero su vida estuvo marcada por la pasión, el poder y la violencia. Hoy perdura como una figura imprescindible del modernismo, testimonio de la ambición y los conflictos del continente.

Blayne Alexander talks with Josh Mankiewicz about his episode, “Twisted Tale.” In March 2015, Aaron Quinn called the Vallejo Police Department to report that someone had broken into his home, drugged him and kidnapped his girlfriend, Denise Huskins.  The police began searching for the missing woman, but they also seemed suspicious of Aaron's story.  Two days later, Denise resurfaced 400 miles from Vallejo, and described being held against her will, drugged, and assaulted. At a press conference following Denise's reappearance, Vallejo police accused the couple of faking the story for publicity. It wasn't until months later, after a man was caught following a similar crime, that Aaron and Denise's story was proven to be true. Blayne and Josh dive into the media frenzy that surrounded the case and explore how Harvard-educated former Marine, Matthew Muller, was ultimately linked to a string of crimes.
