This is the weekly columnWine for Christmas 12-20-2023If you are reading this column, there is a good chance wine will be part of your Christmas/holiday celebration. Observations:• The big meal is a hectic time. Likely lots of food, also lots of commotion and distractions. Don't waste your best wine on this event. Save your best for when it can be calmly appreciated and more of a focus of the meal.• Don't pour bottom-shelf, cheapest-you-can-find wine at the event either. There is plenty of good wine in the $12-25 range. If the party is large, open an assortment so the malbec maven, the pinot princess, the white zin aficionado, and the bubbly booster can enjoy what they enjoy.• Consider port or sherry as part of the event. Great end-of-the-day, mellow-out sipper. Also goes with Christmas sweets.• Go nostalgic—and this works well if there are drop-in visitors. Mulled wine. At its simplest, mulled wine is red wine combined with spices and sugar/honey, served warm.Like its summer counterpart sangria, marinating various ingredients is the secret: 24 hours-plus for sangria, five-plus hours for mulled wine. Both are ideal for making early so you can concentrate on everything else. Bonus: mulled wine adds splendid holiday aromas.Recipe:• 1 cup unfiltered apple juice• 1/4 cup pulpy orange juice• 1/2 cup water• 1 tsp ground ginger• 1 tsp ground allspice• 1/2 tsp ground cloves• 3 cinnamon sticks• 2/3 cup of brown sugar (or honey)• 1 Granny Smith apple, cored, thinly sliced, cut into bite-size pieces• Zest of one orange• Orange, sectioned, cut into bite-size pieces• One 750 ml bottle red wine (cab, merlot, zin, malbec)• 1/2 cup of brandy or cognacPut ginger, allspice, cloves in cheesecloth bag. Put ingredients except brandy/cognac in a crock pot. Heat five or more hours; the longer you heat, the more the flavors marinate and the better it tastes and smells.Add brandy when ready to serve.Double to serve more. This is the weekly newspaper columnWine geekiness 9-27-2023It comes with the wine writer territory: people encounter me at the grocery store, in elevators, on the street and ask me about wine. “As a wine geek…” they begin their question.Hmmm. Wine geek?The original meaning of geek was a “highly intelligent, but introverted person.” When the term entered wine nomenclator, geek also suggested someone who championed unfamiliar grapes from obscure producers.Well, I assert Gus Clemens on Wine is not that. Not introverted. Not focused on obscure wines.Almost 16 years ago when a newspaper editor asked me to begin this project, the assignment was to write about wine in general for the general population and to suggest wines that everyday people could find without trouble or travel. I worked at the approach; the column began running in October, 2008.Yes, I do occasionally challenge readers with uncommon grapes or techniques—white malbec and güner veltliner, for instance. But the wines have to be accessible at grocery or wine stores, online, or from the maker's website. If extraordinary efforts are required—physical visit to the winery, any effort that includes passports and vaccination proofs—the wine never is recommended.So, while I accept the “wine geek” sobriquet with a smile, I don't consider myself one. Actually, I strive not to be one. The same applies to “connoisseur” and “oenophile.”I do love wine and all the stories that abound with wine.I do enjoy that my job includes appreciating wine almost every day and writing wine stories.But I do not think of myself as a wine geek, connoisseur, or oenophile. I consider myself a writer and humorist whose subject happens to be wine. There is no "White" and "Black", but instead there is a rich fabric that makes up each and every one of us; we must continue to explore and name that fabric, and stop propping up a system that asks us to simply tick a box. We are all intended for this world, for this time, for this moment, as we are.  We need to move away from individualism to WEism We must unlearn decades of biases and conditioning in order to understand the difference between the person I want to be and how I actually act in the moment, and to start being the person on the outside that I am on the inside.  A cultural framework exists in which love is earned through achievement, and if I fail, I risk losing love. We are indoctrinated from an early age that the worst thing any of us can do is to be seen to fail; failure denotes weakness, and weakness in failure means that YOU are a failure, as opposed to you are intact and your failure is separate. When I focus on human connection and make space for people to tell their story, they become open and accessible to my story. I wish it would've been more price friendly but i’ll let this one linger around on the shelf. The nose on this one is heavy cherry, vanilla, and caramel. I'm thinking Cinnabon all the way. The 114 proof doesnt turn me off, as the caramel sweetens this up nicely. Velvety smooth cherry syrup, long finish that appreciates some time in the glass to open up. Welcoming cinnamon disk finish and if you can find it for under $100 its a must pour for the topshelf.
