Reagan and Velveeta have been working with fellow dancers to unionize the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar. While the club is contesting the results of their union vote from back in November, it looks like these ladies will succeed in forming the only stripper union in America! This will be the second unionized strip club in the history of the country, the first being the Lusty Lady in San Francisco which closed in 2013. We discuss the physical harassment and other unsafe working conditions that drove the Star Garden dancers to unionize. After petitioning their employer, 18 dancers were locked out of their workplace in March of ‘22. As a result, the women were driven to escalate their tactics to striking and picketing in front of the club. They've since collected union cards and voted in an official union election. Moving forward, the Actors Equity Association will assist these women as they bargain for a contract. To raise money for the out-of-work dancers on strike, Reagan and Velveeta and some other dancers in the community have been using a side project, the Stripper Co-Op, to put on brilliantly unique and vibrant pop-up strip shows at various venues. The money raised through the Co-Op is distributed fairly amongst the strippers, and they also donate a portion to mutual aid. Donations made between the Stripper Co-Op and its previous virtual iteration, the Cyber Clown Girls, total over $50,000 from May 2020 to the present to over 100 different orgs. The Stripper Co-Op was also inspired by the worker-owned Lusty Lady.Follow @stripperstrikenoho on Instagram and Twitter! @stripstrikenohoPlease support their strike fund here!

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let's get started! Anonymous: Hi doctor Cabral, I have a bit of an embarrassing question and I feel very uncomfortable discussing this with the people I know, so really hoping you can help me. How can you tell the difference between brown vaginal discharge (old blood) and a runny stool on your hygienic pad? I have some bowel issues, so sometimes when I pass gas, a little bit stool comes out and ends up on my pad. And when I wear tight pants and sit all day, the pad can move, so the stool ends up a bit higher – where your vaginal discharge usually is. I want to be mindful of brown discharge too, because I have some hormonal problems. Anyway, I really feel super embarrassed about asking this question, so I hope you don't mind answering. Thanks so much in advance for your answer, I really appreciate it. Mark: Hi doctor Cabral, What are your thoughts on hydrogen-rich water? Are the health claims around it true? And do you think a hydrogen water maker would be a good investment for one's health? Thank you in advance for your advice! Mark Michelle: Hi! I know you recommend being dairy free. I am for the most part. I really like Greek yogurt and seem to tolerate it well. What are your opinions on yogurt? Tim: Hi Dr. Cabral, I love your podcast and love your products. Thank you for all of your time and effort, I appreciate it. My question is does diet tonic water have any negative effects on the body? I like to drink one in my shaker cup in the morning mixed with lemon. I just like the taste and a change from regular water. Is this ok or is it not good for me? Simon: Hi Dr C! For about two years I've been getting red swollen sores on my lip and penis (always in the same place) that a bacterial test has shown to be overgrowth of staphylococcus. They typically flare up at the same time and usually when I get a cold or am run-down. Can you recommend anything to rid myself of this overgrowth permanently (or reduce the frequency and magnitude of outbreaks? I tried using antibacterial wash consistently for a fortnight but that doesn't seem to have done the job. I'd love your thoughts. Anonymous: Hi dr cabral, many many thanks for all you do! I have a question about my 18 yr old daughter. She has a little history, at around 14 she started restricting her diet for her sport. Thats the short version. During that tine she started her period. Very heavy periods. It lead to anemia, an iron transfusion & followed by a blood transfusion. She now is sadly on a bc pill. she still has irregular periods, cramps.. i took her for her yearly chec up at her regular doctor and her non fasting cholesterol came back high. She is a very active girl. Competitive cheerleader, tumbling, loves running & working out and honestly eats pretty healthy. She also suffers from anxiety.. Are there supplements that can help. Please help with some direction as to how i can help get her on track—endless thanks Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/2032 - - - Dr. Cabral's New Book, The Rain Barrel Effect https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: http://CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Sleep & Hormones Test (Run your adrenal & hormone levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels)

One key aspect that has emerged in recent times is to bring the bar experience home. And, this has also been facilitated by companies that function the mixers category. There have been democratize experiences that were traditionally part of the metro city markets to other tier markets as well, and so much more. One such company is Jimmy's Cocktail. On this episode, Varun is joined by Ankur Bhatia, Founder and CEO of Jimmy's Cocktail. Ankur shares his experience of working across e-commerce and alcohol-beverages industry. Was da wohl los ist?
On this episode of the Non Alcoholic Bible podcast, Tim and Caz try NINE different tonic waters! This should make it easier for you to choose a tonic water that's right for your cocktail, G&T or just to drink solo. So many bubbles went in to the making of this episode, so thanks for listening! We loved all of the tonic waters we tried, but we narrowed it down to three at the end, so make sure to check out our favourites! We bought the majority of our tonic waters from Amazon of The Whisky Exchange (yes, The Whisky Exchange, because they sell tonic waters in single bottles and not HUGE packs). We are not sponsored by either of these companies, and we were not sponsored by ANY of the tonic waters in this episode. This was a true blind-tasting with genuine opinions :). What's up Radiant Barbarian Love Doves!Another lil micro-sode comin' at ya, where I share some recent thoughts around the colonial devastation wrought in the name of Old Testament barbarism and organized evangelical Christianity, which in my opinion is patently blasphemous against the ideas of the actual Gospel. I also reminisce about what it was like living through a hurricane and a lava flow on the Big Island and how the experience informs my reaction to and vibes around this current evolving situation with the pandemic. Also: Expropriate the Vatican, redistribute the stolen wealth back to the global Southern Hemispheric proletariat, demote priests to physical grunt workers in food bank warehouses, throw the pedophiles into volcanoes, elevate the nuns to principal administrators of the Catholic Church, and Wham, Bam, thank you Ma'am. I don't have a ton of time today because I gotta scamper off to work soon, but I had to voice my thoughts regarding the medicinal benefits of tonic water for fighting off Covid-19 (and malaria to boot!), as well as the ugly truth behind this supposed "rescue package" our dear leaders in D.C have put together in response to the current national and global health and economic crisis. This "stimulus" is nothing but a 2nd, vastly more massive edition of the 2009 corporate bank bailout, signifying a generational economic realignment and redistribution of wealth away from working class people and into the pockets of the oligarchic ruling class. We mustn't let fear and our fight or flight response blind us to the grim reality of this bill. We need to educate one another and resist this further consolidation of wealth by the 1%. We need to support each other, and especially our brothers and sisters who work cash jobs and are not eligible for unemployment benefits. This bill is also not a $2.2T dollar package as the corporate media is telling us. It's a $10T giveaway. The Fed is printing $4 Trillion dollars for "loans" to businesses and banks (who are NOT legally bound to actually re-lend to working people, and in fact if 2009 is any indication, largely won't) and is printing a further $4 Trillion dollars for the insurance industry (must be nice to be the insurance industry). Meanwhile, the working class gets a paltry one time payment of $1200 sometime in May, which doesn't even cover people's gentrified rent for April. The immiseration of the working class as a result of this biological health crisis cannot be overstated. Workers needs universal basic income for the duration of this crisis. A one-time payment of $1200 is laughably inadequate. So get your yellow vests ready friends. We will need to make our demands in the street once this health crisis is over. I'll be giving away free Dadaist paintings for every surveillance drone that's disabled. TRACK LIST FOR THIS EPISODE:Ana Tijoux - Somos Sur (feat.
Just a few decades ago, gin & tonics were considered rather stodgy and boring, the drink of suburbanites at the golf club. Today, the century-old drink is hot again. In part, that’s due to a boom in craft gin distilling—a ginaissance! But there’s also been a new wave of experimentation with gin’s life partner, tonic water. This episode, we focus on the tonic side of the equation. Which genius came up with the idea of combining quinine, a malaria drug, with soda water and sugar in order to create this refreshing beverage? How did the bark of a South American tree end up in everything from hair-restoring shampoo to cocktails? And is it true that the G&T began life as a pleasant way for the Anglo-Indian elite to take their anti-malarials? This episode, we take a sip of tonic’s history with Kim Walker and Mark Nesbitt, authors of the new book Just the Tonic: A Natural History of Tonic Water. Listen in for all that, plus beef-infused tonic wines, Aperol spritzes, and the gin & tonic’s true origin story. Cheers!
Things on our grocery list week: eggs, almond milk, gin, blackberries, and ghosts! This week we are discussing haunted stores. Vanessa discusses COS the clothing store in New York, NY. While Bailie talks about the Pike Place Market in Seattle, WA. Our drink this week is the Farmer's Market Gin & Tonic. To make this drink yourself you will 2 oz. of Gin, Tonic Water, 3 Cucumber Wheels, 1 sprig of Fresh Rosemary, and 1 Lime Wedge. Place the cucumber wheels in the bottom of a rocks/Old Fashioned glass and squeeze lime on top. Gently muddle the cucumber to release the juices. Add the sprig of rosemary and fill glass with ice. Pour in Gin and top off with tonic water. Promo: I Understood That Reference Podcast Find more wonderfully strange podcasts like ours at StraightUpStrange.com
Kim Walker talks about the history and science of cinchona bark as a tonic, medicine, and mixer. Walker is a biocultural historian completing her PhD work on the Cinchona Bark Collection at Kew Gardens. She’s the co-author (along with Mark Nesbitt) of Just The Tonic: A Natural History of Tonic Water.

As the Civil War fractured Washington D.C., socialite Rose O'Neal Greenhow coordinated a vital spy ring to funnel information to the Confederates. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe one of the war's most unlikely spies, and her determination to aid the South. We'll also fragment the queen's birthday and puzzle over a paid game of pinball. Intro: German officer Ernst Jünger likened the sounds of World War I shelling to "being menaced by a man swinging a heavy hammer." Bowdoin College compiled a list of odd how-to titles. NOTE: After this episode was originally released, some listeners objected to our handling of Greenhow's story, saying that we were treating her too sympathetically when she was defending the institution of slavery. They're entirely right about that -- I had focused on her personal story without being sensitive to its larger implications. I'm very sorry for that oversight. We're presenting the story here as it originally ran, and we'll discuss listeners' reactions to it in Episode 279. -- Greg Sources for our feature: Ann Blackman, Wild Rose: Rose O'Neale Greenhow, Civil War Spy, 2006. Dear ones: we were blessed for this week's episode to have Erika Meitner come through. We chatted it up about documentary poetics, political rhetoric, pop culture detritus, saviors, and more. But before that conversation, your cute hosts waded into the *poetry plagarism* discussion. ERIKA MEITNER is the author of five books of poems. Her first book, Inventory at the All-Night Drugstore, won the 2002 Robert Dana-Anhinga Prize for Poetry, and was published in 2003 by Anhinga Press. Her second book, Ideal Cities, was selected by Paul Guest as a winner of the 2009 National Poetry Series competition, and was published in 2010 by HarperCollins. Her third collection, Makeshift Instructions for Vigilant Girls, was published by Anhinga Press in 2011. Her fourth collection of poems, Copia, was published by BOA Editions in 2014 as part of their American Poets Continuum Series, and her newest collection, Holy Moly Carry Me, was also published by BOA Editions in September 2018. Holy Moly Carry Me is the winner of the 2018 National Jewish Book Award in poetry, and a finalist for the 2018 National Book Critics Circle award in poetry. HIBISCUS ON THE SLEEPING SHORES “Shut to the blather that the water made / Rose up besprent and sought the sleeping red… all the stupid afternoon” —Wallace Stevens, “Hibiscus on the Sleeping Shores” This drink glows a bright, hypnotic pink in the light, making it a perfect day-drinking cocktail. Pairs well with a view of water, naps in the sun, and our conversation with the equally bright, equally delightful Erika Meitner. INGREDIENTS: Ice, Gin, Tonic Water, Fresh lime, Hibiscus tea (strong, chilled), Hibiscus bloom (garnish, optional) *Your ratios are your own—Mix it to taste!
What's good friends. This week we get down with getting back into the swing of "the poetry world." We also sat down with Rick Barot and got taken all the way to school. He dropped so much knowledge on art and the body and the state of contemporary American poetry. Hurry up and listen already! RICK BAROT was born in the Philippines, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and attended Wesleyan University and The Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. He has published three books of poetry with Sarabande Books: The Darker Fall (2002); Want (2008); and Chord (2015), which was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize and received the 2016 UNT Rilke Prize, the PEN Open Book Award, and the Publishing Triangle's Thom Gunn Award. Barot is the poetry editor of New England Review. He lives in Tacoma, Washington and teaches at Pacific Lutheran University. He is also the director of The Rainier Writing Workshop, the low-residency MFA in Creative Writing at PLU. His fourth book of poems, The Galleons, will be published by Milkweed Editions in Spring 2020. THOSE WINTER GIN AND TONICS: What did we know, what did we know of a gin and tonic's potential to be a winter cocktail? Nothing! (Until we invented this version). The addition of Amaro Averna and fresh blood orange give the refreshing G&T you know and love some deeper bitter notes and a blink more sweetness. The title of the drink alludes to the famous, heartbreaking sonnet “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden. Ingredients: Gin (we used Seattle-based Big Gin), Tonic Water, Amaro Averna, Blood Orange REFERENCES: "Archaic torso of Apollo" by Rainer Maria Rilke; "Ode to a Grecian Urn" by John Keats; “Styrofoam Cup” by Brenda Hillman; Las Meninas by Diego Veláquez; "An A to Z of Theory: Roland Barthes and Semiotics" by Andrew Robinson; The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry & Poetics; "At the Fishhouses" by Elizabeth Bishop; VIDA
