Happy 10 year anniversary to Occupy Wall Street!  We'll be reflecting on that. Here comes the subpoenas! The House Select committee on the January 6 insurrection issued subpoenas to several former Trump officials including former White House strategist Steve Bannon, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former social media director Dan Scavino and Kashyap Patel, who was chief of staff to Trump's defense secretary. The CDC gave the green light for the Pfizer COVID booster shot for at-risk individuals. The third dose of the vaccine will be available for individuals over 65 and for adults who are at heightened risk of severe illness.  Guess who's writing our climate policy. I'll give you a hint. West Virginia & coal. Yup, you guessed it, Senator Joe Manchin is the chair of the Senate Committe on Energy and Natural Resources, Manchin will have an oversized influence on the shape of any climate policy that emerges from the Democrats' reconciliation bill.   Meanwhile, climate activists connected with Greta Thunberg staged the first large protest today in Berlin Germany. This is the first significant Fridays for the Future protest since the pandemic.  Call it a win for the AZ election Fraudit. A win for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, that is. That's right, the Cyber Ninjas pulled out all their bamboo detecting apparatuses and found there was no there there. Now AZ has to clean up the mess (after they pay off all those invoices from Cyber Ninjas, that is).  The New York Times reports on how raging anti-masking policies are hitting students with disabilities especially hard. The article features anti-maskers in Tennessee as the state is one of seven being investigated by the Department of Education for descrimination against students with disabilities during COVID.  Florida continues to impress with its ability to find new lows.  Gov. Ron DeSantis has appointed a new State Surgeon General who, according to Slate, “was last seen on the national stage participating in a COVID miracle cure event with another doctor who believes that lizard people control the government and that demons cause gynecological problems by implanting stolen sperm, as well as a third doctor who later got arrested for being part of the mob that smashed into the U.S. Capitol in an effort to overturn the presidential election.” Pennsylvania Senate Republicans launched their “sham election review” while we were away and at the second hearing last week.  We'll recap how Senator Cris Dush isn't ready for the primetime.  After the Central York School District banned books on Rosa Parks and MLK, students rose up and demanded the books be returned to the curriculum. After national attention to the Central York Monkey Trial-esq book ban, the school board reversed course and lifted the ban.  Susan Snyder of The Philadelphia Inquirer published an excellent profile of Steve Oross and his case against Kutztown University. You'll recall that We had Oross on Out d'Coup LIVE at the beginning of the month. Oross recently received a heart transplant, making him at the highest risk of severe/fatal effects of contracting COVID. Kutztown denied his ADA request to teach online.  Penn State suspends 117 students who missed their required COVID-19 testing.  PA Republicans looking to get back to work for the people of the Commonwealth, decide that going to war against Gov. Wolf's mask mandate is one of their top priorities, just as COVID cases spike and parents grow increasingly concerned about the safety of their children in schools. Good thing they can't get their shit together.  SpaceX launched four non-astronauts into REAL space for a three-day tour. The SpaceX Inspiration mission also raised about $200 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.  The U.S. Federal Court of Claims released a redacted version of Jeff Bezos's hissy fit lawsuit protesting NASA's decision to give SpaceX contracts for the lunar lander system to be used in upcoming Artemis missions, leaving Blue Origin's aspirations wanting. It's rich that Bezos is claiming he and his Blue Origin space baby had been treated unfairly.  New Space Force uniforms have got some serious Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek feels going on.  Scientists have discovered footprints in the White Sands National Park (NM) dating back to more than 21,000 years ago. That means that there were humans in North America several thousands of years before scientists previously thought.  Roll a d20.

Our guest today is Justin Medved. He is the Director of Learning, Innovation, and Technology at The York School - a K to 12th-grade independent day school in Toronto, Canada. Justin leads the way in professional development for faculty to ensure that technology is integrated into the classroom, and 21st-century pedagogy is developed to enhance learning. The York School was the first school in Canada to implement a 1-1 laptop program, and thereby positioned itself as a tech innovator early in the game. Justin has spent more than 10 years expanding and improving the school’s tech offering. He is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google Certified Innovator. In this episode, Justin articulates what it means to be a 21st-century learner/teacher/school.He gives specific strategies for how to start from the “why” technology is needed in education to the “how” it can be implemented. Listen and take note of how a school can improve its value proposition and increase enrollment by embracing technology as a non-negotiable basic skill needed for the future. If you want to learn about the role of tech in schools, this conversation is not to be missed.Quotes:5:52 “We as an institution needed to figure out where tech belonged within the tried and tested traditions of the past; new pedagogy needed to be crafted and woven into the way our school operated.”11:30 “The broad awareness of just how many skills are required to exist in the world today goes well beyond what a traditional education can deliver.” 15:30 “People want confidence that the school knows where it’s going (with technology).”23:35 “Schools are very complicated organisms. It’s so easy to come up with a change and aspire to have a change that ultimately contributes to your school’s value proposition in the market or increases enrollment, but realizing that change takes a lot of energy with a lot of stakeholders involved and its not as simple as a few Saturday PD days and some newsletters.” 25:34 “A brave school - or a school that really ends up implementing change well doesn’t lose sight of the long-term stewardship required on some of these big initiatives.”30:50 “The mindset you (a teacher) have to adopt is one of continuous learning; the teacher has to come to the table with a growth mindset and a willingness to ask questions, seek help, and drive towards competency.”Here are some resources mentioned in our discussion:Seth Godin, This Is Marketing - https://seths.blog/tim/Dr. John Paul Kotter - the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus, at the Harvard Business School, and best-selling author - https://www.kotterinc.com/8-steps-process-for-leading-change/Grant Lichtman, nationally recognized thought leader in education and author of, “Moving the Rock: Seven Levers WE Can Press to Transform Education” - http://www.grantlichtman.com/Cohort 21 https://cohort21.com/The Strategic Change Accelerator https://www.cais.ca/professional-development/strategicchangeacceleratorThe York School - https://www.yorkschool.comWhere to learn more about Justin Medved:Twitter - https://twitter.com/jmedvedBlogs - http://medagogy.edublogs.orgJustin on Linkedin https://ca.linkedin.com/in/justinmedved

SaTP30.mp3 Listen on Posterous Guests Ellen Masten Academic and College Counselor Pacific Collegiate School and Michele Radcliffe, Director of College Counseling at York SchoolNews of the Week:1) Thomas Friedman’s “Teaching For America” Op-Ed piece in Sunday’s NYT Honoring teachers as professionals, preparing & compensating them accordingly; role of parents - The more we demand from teachers the more we have to demand from students and parents. 2) Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction NYTimes Magazine “Their brains are rewarded not for staying on task but for jumping to the next thing,” said Michael Rich, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and executive director of the Center on Media and Child Health in Boston. And the effects could linger: “The worry is we’re raising a generation of kids in front of screens whose brains are going to be wired differently.”Allison Miller, 14, sends and receives 27,000 texts in a month, her fingers clicking at a blistering pace as she carries on as many as seven text conversations at a time. She texts between classes, at the moment soccer practice ends, while being driven to and from school “The headline is: bring back boredom,” added Dr. Rich, who last month gave a speech to the American Academy of Pediatrics entitled, “Finding Huck Finn: Reclaiming Childhood from the River of Electronic Screens.”3) Computers In Schools Are A Failure, Says Computer Pioneer Alan Kay [Apple in Educ] Kay says the education system has squandered 30 years of technology in classrooms. He likens the modern factory educatory system to a monkey with a microscope. The monkey looks at its reflection in the microscope’s barrel but doesn’t look through the eyepiece — it utterly misses the point.4) Project Red: Do 1:1 right or don't do it at all ZDNet EducationLast month, Project Red, an initiative to “Revolutionize Education” through technology, released findings on the utility and factors for success in 1:1 computing. Their research, which spanned almost 1000 schools using a comprehensive survey instrument over the 2009-2010 school year suggested that, when done correctly, 1:1 computing can have measurable and significant impacts on teaching and learning. When done poorly, 1:1 is just an added cost without any added educational value. 5) The Secret To Getting Every Student Excited About Writing Tech&Learning “A lot of student writing is of little interest to anyone beyond the teacher.”Main Topic:  College Admission: 2010: Part I (through submitting applications) Guests Ellen Masten and Michele Radcliffe 8 Big Changes to College Admission in 2010-2011 - Yahoo News http://www.nacacnet.org/PublicationsResources/steps/Pages/default.aspx .  This is a subsection of the NACAC website, the National Association of College Admissions Counselors.  The URL gives students and parents information about various topics in the college admission process. Questions on our minds: When should students first start thinking actively about college admission and what should their initial steps entail? What are your tips for helping high school students identify the best college/universities to match their interests & personalities? How many schools should a student be applying to?  Is there a notion of applying to too many? How important are college visits? interviews with reps? teacher evaluations? course rigor vs. SAT scores? What are the trends now that admission offices with smaller staffs are inundated with more applications? (See “Application Inflation” from previous podcast) How can an applicant make his or her application stand out from the crowd? Do DVDs and ePortfolios help showcase student work effectively or are they ignored for lack of time? How has the role of private counselors evolved and are parents getting their money’s worth? A new ethics code for college admissions counselors - EducationNews.Org & USA Today 6.7.10 - The number of families hiring private counselors to advise them on the college application process continues to grow, with one recent study estimating that 26% of "high achieving" students now make use of such counselors.
