With season 1983/84 all done and dusted, it is time to take a sporting break as the excellent writer David Goldblatt joins Martyn to discuss that summer's Olympic Games. The epitome of an increasingly commercialised sporting world, these Games made money like never before. David takes us through just how they did, why it will never happen again, the difficulty that the USA had in taking Carl Lewis to their heart and no tears for Zola Budd. Berna Abik'in sunumuyla dünden bugüne Olimpiyat tarihinde yaşanan olayların anlatıldığı '60 Saniyede Olimpiyatlar'ın yeni bölümünde büyük çarpışma var. Ladies n' Genminminmin (er, min) buckle-up for Lesley Paterson's extraordinary story of 'Triathletic Ascension' from being 3 times World Champion ExTerra Triathlete to BAFTA + 4 x OSCAR Award Winning glory!A story of grit, determination, tenacity and courage in how she overcome against all the odds, a bike crash, a broken shoulder, an injured leg AND Lime Disease to win & raise the ‘last push' £10,000 to re-secure the rights for her film, which then went on to secure all of the Awards for "All Quiet On The Western Front", including the OSCAR for Best International Feature. The stuff of Hollywood right there!Lesley Paterson earned the nickname ‘The Scottish Rocket' after wining no fewer than 5 world titles in athletics. More recently, she has picked up a new clutch of world-class awards in a completely different field, as the screenwriter of the Oscar-winning new version of "All Quiet On The Western Front".The youngest of 4, Lesley had older brothers to compete with. She played rugby with the boys and earned their respect. She enjoyed running for its spiritual values as well as its fitness benefits. Lesley also spent time training as a ballet dancer and later studying theatre and film in San Diego. A genuinely liberated renaissance woman, when it came to competitive swimming, Lesley said she had ‘the heart but not the numbers.' This didn't stop her winning her first world medal, in Maui, in a triathlon, in 2011. And that was after giving her competitors a 10 minute start while she dealt with a flat tyre in that section of the competition. Lesley is by her own confession a totally driven character with a strong focus on forward-momentum. Lesley and her husband Simon, a Performance Psychologist, co-wrote a book called ‘The Brave Athlete', designed to help competitors deal with a range of issues, which could compromise their performance on the track or in their social relationships. At a personal level, Lesley is inspired by the unconditional love shown by her parents and the inspirational versatility of the South African runner, Zola Budd. One of Lesley's favourite quotes is this: “Everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about.”Today Lesley Paterson has more than half a dozen screenwriter/film production projects on the go. She describes herself unashamedly as a ‘hustler' - but a very hard working hustler. Someone who always wants to be compassionate as well as passionate, inspirational as well as inspired, joyful as well as driven. Here is a multitalented, articulate woman with a unique story to tell. hello and welcome back to the big run. I hope you enjoyed last week's conversation with Fabricio. It was a pleasure to do. You may remember at the start we talked about AI generative art. Inspired by this and encouraged by another artist and listener out in New Zealand (shout out to Logan) I was inspired to use a generate to create this week's podcast cover art. To create AI art, artists write algorithms not to follow a set of rules, but to “learn” a specific aesthetic by analyzing thousands of images. The algorithm then tries to generate new images in adherence to the aesthetics it has learned. for this week's guest, I entered the keywords breathe free run strong and applied a cubist filter. It turned out pretty cool I think. You can see the results on IG. so why breathe free run strong? Well, today's guest has had an exciting journey to arrive on an obsession with breath and its power to change you. After heading up denim at Diesel in the 90s as it had its metoric rise, he changed tack and became a teacher. Running had always been in his life after being inspired by Zola Budd to run the 1500m at his school barefoot. But when he came across breathe work and nasal breathing things really stepped up. Ladies and gentlemen Im delighted to welcome Kevin Mcquaid Found out more about Kevin's work here: www.breathetomove.org try out some running breath work exercises here: https://breathetomove.org/2021/08/21/running-breathing-tools/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebigrunpodcast/message

At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, South African-born Zola Budd collided with the home favourite, Mary Decker, in the final of the women's 3,000 metres. Decker was left weeping on the ground, while Budd was booed by the crowd and had to leave the US with a police escort after receiving death threats. Simon Watts introduces the memories of Zola Budd as recorded in the BBC archives. PHOTO: Zola Budd, left, with Mary Decker in the 1984 Olympic final (Getty Images)
Bruce Fordyce is a running legend. The South African has won his home country's premier event, the gruelling Comrades Ultra-Marathon, an incredible nine times. His achievements also include winning the London to Brighton race three years in a row, but these days he's more at home taking on a 5km parkrun. As the chief executive of parkrun South Africa he's completed more than 400 runs and toured all over the world. I talked to Bruce about how his running journey began, helping Zola Budd complete the Comrades and the agony and ecstasy of taking on one of the world's toughest races...
Zola Budd Pieterse is a name that is etched in running history. On this episode we get to know Zola and her story. We chat about her early years growing up on a farm, running barefoot, studying political science and overcoming adversity. We talk about "The Fall" and how what we hear via media reports is not always the truth as it was in her relationship with Mary Decker. Hope you enjoy this episode.
Zola Budd Pieterse has every reason in the world to hate the sport of track and field, but she doesn't. Instead, she gives back to it in ways that will help today's young stars experience it in a much more positive way than she did. It has not, however, been an easy journey. Zola grew up on a farm in South Africa before suddenly being thrust on the world stage at the age of 17 when she ran a world record time in the 5000m. That time would not be ratified by the IAAF because it did not recognize competitions in her home country due to apartheid policies there. Thus to compete internationally, she was sent to Great Britain to claim UK citizenship since her grandfather was British. This move was met with great controversy as many meet organizers and fans protested her naturalization, making life difficult for Zola upon her arrival. In spite of the less-than-warm welcome, Zola still ran extremely well, claiming the official 5000m world record and earning a spot in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. In the final in LA, she was involved in a collision with Mary Decker Slaney that sent Mary to the ground and left Zola reeling from the boos that then filled the Olympic stadium, directed toward her even though the contact was incidental. Even with this disappointment, Zola went on to claim more European records, win the World Cross Country Championship in back to back years, and make another Olympic team in 1992. In this episode, Zola joins Shanna and Kara to talk about it all including growing up as a running prodigy, how she dealt with the intensity of the negative spotlight often on her, and why she competed barefoot and always clean in the steroid era of the 1980s and EPO era of the early 1990s. Zola then shares how she reclaimed her love for the sport as her own while also coaching the next generation of runners in her current home city of Conway, South Carolina. Zola is an absolute legend in our sport, and we are so honored to share her story.

Can all repetitive strain injuries be traced back to modern running shoes? Jarlath asks Sonia about this and other claims of the barefoot running movement. It makes sense on paper. We have conditioned our feet to expect a type of cushioning that encourages heal striking rather than the flat strike that lets the miracle of engineering that is human foot so its job. Sonia looks back at her days running barefoot at competitive events, the Kenyan model, Zola Budd, ice baths and the danger of transitioning to shoeless running or minimal shoes. There’s look at Jarlath stalled progress after he suffered a hip injury this week. How will this impact his plan to run 2000K for Jigsaw.ie? In this candid interview, Zola shares her amazingly heartfelt story of loss and love. We start off with how and why she fell in love with running. What was the reason behind her decision to mainly run 'barefoot'? Growing up in South Africa during troubled times she moved to the UK under duress. We learn how she was treated by the British press as well as the British public. Her story of being in the constant eye of a judgemental population when all she wanted to do was run. We trace her rise to celebrity status and find out that losing those close to her has been a trend throughout her life. A happy return to her homeland South Africa, where she would meet and marry her husband and eventually compete for her beloved homeland at the Olympic Games. With many accolades on the track and across the fields of cross country races across the world, Zola was always seemingly removed from all of what that meant. Marathon and Ultra distance running came into her life and it is in these longer pursuits that her peace and serenity is found. We talk about the mighty Comrades Ultra in South Africa and the host of the show even suggests a Marathon that Zola should add to her bucket list. A remarkable individual with a remarkable life story, Zola Budd Pieterse.

It’s another tough week for Carla given she doesn’t know if she’s Zola Budd or Doctor John Nash from one day to the next. One minute she’s leaving a bloody trail along the Cobbles from her battered bare feet, the next she’s solving complicated mathematical problems with a marker on Ken’s wallpaper while thinking the crossword is speaking to her. Meanwhile, Sarah’s pleasant, helpful attitude to a request from the police may well be enough to ensure Nick and David end up in jail for Easter, and Natalie stays off the coke long enough to put in a decent trial at the Barber’s, but will it be enough to get the job? In other news, Hardman Rick is definitely not cut out for a career in children’s entertainment if his puppetry skills are anything to go by, Sinead rings a bell while Daniel decides that a humanist christening is more in keeping with their wedding (which definitely wasn’t a thing), Chesney and Gemma plan a filthy getaway to a caravan site and do some practicing on that poor couch, Abi is caught —ahem— taking the TV remote upstairs again, and Steve's heart is older than Ken.

Fredrik is still consumed with the Orson Welles biography and reads two profound quotes from it in an all new Filip and Fredrik Podcast. What do you have to be considered a genius or an innovator? The duo also discuss the epic failures of “reverse-innovators” like Swedish cross-country skier Gunde Svan, Zola Budd, Bjorn Borg and more. Filip is worried because he always learns about celebrity deaths while sitting on the bowl. Is there a correlation? But unlike the passing of David Bowie and Lemmy, he is amazed at the lack of mourning anyone has given Chuck Berry. Many artist have checkered pasts and are forgiven in death, but not, it seems, the Father of Rock and Roll. When a genius dies, what do you have to do to get a nice obituary? TalkFEED — A month ago Irvette van Zyl won the Totalsports Women’s Race in Stellenbosch in a time of 32:50. It equalled Zola Budd’s personal best as the third fastest 10km performances by South African women on the road. Budd ran that time at the age of 17 in Bloemfontein in August 1983.
