POPULARITY
On today's Keepin It Real, Cam reports back about his most memorable event on his recent trip to Brazil. He traveled a long way to come back with this... ------ Cachaca is a Brazilian alcohol that was first made by the slaves the Portuguese brought to Brazil. It's sugar cane based. Very sweet. And like gumbo, red beans and rice, jazz music, and the Mississippi delta blues among other things, it was what the poor people created due to a lack of resources and that the wealthy people eventually wanted. Crazy how that works so predictably. It's like clockwork. Anyway, my wife and I were enjoying our first cocktail made of cachaca by the pool last week in a small coastal community north of Sao Paulo called Paraty. However, we struggled to enjoy the drink. And I'm certain you can relate to what happened. It's become a meme - There was someone in an environment too small for their voice, talking too loudly. It was loud people having private conversations on the phone in small spaces. Loud Zoom calls in coffee shops. You've witnessed this. In our case it was a British couple lying in lounge chairs by the pool on speakerphone with their daughter talking about finding her an apartment in London. The father, to be heard, raised his voice to nearly a yell so the phone would hear him from three feet away. Well, my wife and I heard him, neighbors living next to the hotel heard him, the birds in the trees on the coast heard him, the shop owner across town, people in the next city over and the Uruguayans 1000 miles to the south also heard him. We didn't want to, but we learned a lot about this family and their dysfunctional and helpless daughter. Our relaxing drink tasted like cachaca, lime, and disgust. Around the pool were two other couples. We met and stood talking in the pool. They were really nice. One couple had been traveling since January 1st. They were recently retired and described retirement as having three distinct phases – Go Time, Slow Time, and then, No Time. Go Time is travel. Slow Time too old to travel and now you sit around the house. No Time is travel back and forth to your final doctor appointments. They retired early to have a longer Go Time and were doing it up right. They were telling us about how they planned their extensive trips then, and I promise I'm not making this up, the British man got into the pool and began swimming laps right through middle of us three couples and another guy who had joined us. We stood there in water up to our waists in disbelief. He kicked right through us, splashing us, no more than a foot or two away as he came by. I'd never seen anything like it. Was it aggressive? Or was it just plain clueless? Anyway, the three different couples plus the one guy decided not to move. And he kept swimming. We'd pause our chat as he swam through. It's sad that after traveling about 18 hours to get to a place way off my radar and another 18 hours to get back home, the only story I have from my trip is about a British man in our pool. Which makes me want to drink lots of cachaca. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.
Welcome to another episode of "Who's My Rep?" In today's interview, host Jason Littrell sits down with the president of AmbreBev, Dr. Tom Baeker, who is also the driving force behind Blue Rook Cane Spirits. Join us as we delve into the fascinating journey of how Dr. Baeker's love affair with Brazil and its iconic beverage, cachaca, led him to create a unique line of spirits in Central Kentucky. Discover the story behind the decision to import cachaca, the challenges they faced in finding it in the US, and their ultimate goal to share this delightful drink with the American market. We also explore the intricacies of sugarcane spirit production and the distinct differences between corn and sugarcane-based neutral spirits. So sit back, relax, and join us as we uncover the captivating world of Blue Rook Distillery in this full interview with Dr. Tom Baeker. "Kentucky's Love Affair with Cachaca: The real question then is why did somebody from Kentucky end up becoming so enchanted with Keshasa in the 1st place and Cain's spirits, on another." — Dr. Tom Baeker [00:01:32 → 00:01:40] Viral Topic: "The Fascination with Cachaca and Caipirinha in Brazil" Quote: "We became really intrigued by cachaca and the cocktail that was typically made with it called the caipirinha. It was everywhere. I mean, everywhere you turned, not just in city centers, but in more rural areas, in the most remote bodegas, everybody had and was drinking some sort of concoction made with cachaca, most usually the caipirinha." — Dr. Tom Baeker [00:03:22 → 00:03:31] "Importing Cachaca: 'This should is something that we should bring to the US in a more robust way.'" — Dr. Tom Baeker [00:04:17 → 00:04:23] "The Love Story of Cachaca: 'We fell in love, finally, with a distillery Just north of the city of Rio in a town called Novo Fri Bordeaux, the distillery is called Fazenda Soledada, And it was a it's a beautiful place located in a nature preserve, with crystal clear running water and run by a True master distiller.'" Dr. Tom Baeker, the president of AmbreBev, now doing business as Blue Rook Cane Spirits, is an indie entrepreneur based in Central Kentucky. While Kentucky is known for its bourbon, Dr. Baeker's company is breaking the mold by offering unique and unconventional products. With no bourbon or whiskey in their repertoire, Blue Rook Cane Spirits stands out by providing one-of-a-kind offerings to both the local community and the rest of the country. Dr. Baeker's innovative and daring approach sets him apart in the spirits industry. The march through World Cup 2022 footy traveler groups reaches its penultimate episode. This week, Mike & Colin look back at their time in Doha with fellow traveling soccer fans from Brasil, Switzerland, Serbia, & Cameroon. Were the caipirinhas or the Brasilian confidence stronger? Do we finally know what it takes to emigrate to the beautiful land of the Suisse? What's on tap outside of footy for someone visiting Serbia? And did Colin randomly meet Samuel Eto'o's grandmother? It's all here in this episode! Foot(y)notes: Brasil Perhaps this is where that Brasilian confidence started. The recipe for a good caipirinha is pretty straightforward, but if you'd like something a bit fruitier, perhaps a Mike-style ‘caipi-fruta'... Switzerland We found this interesting as we looked deeper into Deiter's industry of hemp-based building materials. Serbia Our Serbian guests humbly claimed that Belgrade has a “really good nightlife.” What they didn't tell us was that it's been called the ‘best in the Balkans.' However… Check out the comments on their specific recommendation, River nightclub, one of Belgrade's many ‘splavs', before you head there as a footy traveler :-| Cameroon If Cameroon is on your bucket list, we'd recommend the ‘know before you go' policy. You can read up on travel to Cameroon here, and here, and here.

Adelaide spent years assessing risk for an insurance company, using her math background to save money and work out inefficiencies. During COVID she got the entrepreneurship bug and changed gears entirely. Now a couple of years into building a spirits brand from scratch she shares her story - why she made the leap to the alcohol industry, her passion behind the Brazilian drink of cachaca, and a few pointers on getting a company started from the ground up.Special Mentions:Kachaca SpiritsClassic Caipirinha RecipeWhat is Cachaça? Cachaça is the National Spirit of Brazil and the third most popular spirit in the world with nearly 1 billion liters produced each year. Distilled from fresh sugar cane juice, cachaça production predates Caribbean rum by more than 100 years and has a fruiter, lighter, more floral flavor than rums made from molasses. How to Get Market-Ready: Wine and Spirits by Steve RayThank you to Tony Stuck for the awesome intro/outro music and to Mary Ann King for the amazing pod art that you see for every episode. Tonight I discuss how the hypocracy of the left is. As Texas passes an ant-abortion law, the left seems to acknowledge that there are biological differences between a male and female. I had a hard time reading the articles because of constant changes of subject as it was bringing other issues into play that confused me. Overall, I think confusing society as a whole is a ploy to dumb people down to keep em distracted for more sinister things. The last article I read deals with the state of IL. passing a sex education class for children and, in my opinion, sexualizes children and does not educate them on anything of importance. Seems like it is telling children they are nothing but sexual object. I always believed sex education should come from the child's parents because a good parent would not teach their child to be promiscuous. Just my opinion. From having lunch with the dead to horoscope truths and pettiness to enneagram who's who and horrible questions for terrible people, there is A LOT to learn about Hope and Chrissie this week. Prepare your mind for the madness.
In this flavorful conversation with Ivy Mix, author of Spirits of Latin America, some of the topics we discuss include: Ivy’s background in the bar world, including her philanthropic work as a co-founder of Speed Rack. How Spirits of Latin America is tied intimately to Leyenda - a pan-Latin bar that Ivy designed in partnership with Julie Reiner of Clover Club. Why this book is as much a travelogue as it is a cocktail book. Yes - there are recipes, and yes - there is information on different spirits. But the soul of this book is also rooted in people and place. We dig into all this at great length. An interesting perspective shift in the form of a case study on the Havana, Cuba bartending scene, where bartenders tend to have more advanced degrees than their clients. We also dig really deep into Ivy’s cocktail workshopping practices at Leyenda - which generated a number of cocktails in her book. It’s almost impossible to summarize, except to say that she incorporates spreadsheets, improv, mad libs, and formal art crits. It sounds insane, but it’s completely interesting and compelling. To cap it all off, we talk about bar hacks for getting esoteric booze in the quarantine era, the romance of split base cocktails, the problem with everyone wanting to be a National Geographic photographer, what to drink with Ruth Bader Ginsburg And much, much more

Hi Guys, I hope you are enjoying your summer with delicious cocktails and of course sunny beachy weather (well, we are not on a beach but you get the point)! We figured for those hot summer days outside you can make some easy recipes you can make with things around your kitchen and some rum of course!! We will be covering three cocktails and some cool facts about them today: Daiquiri, Moijto, and Caipirinha . Daq: classic cocktail that through time we have seen evolve into other drinks. It is the bases of most tiki drink origins combining sugar, sour (lime) and rum. It history is not what you usually see or read on the internet. It wasn't created by a man named Jenning Cox in Cuba in 1902 but by the British Royal Navy and pirates (yes my favorite) back in 1600s. It started with rum rations on the ships daily plus lime juice to prevent scurvy. The rum was very potent and so you could add sugar (which you would receive for doing extra tasks onboard). It was also a fav with Ernest Hemingway the author whos statue is place at "La Floridita" bar where he enjoyed them. Mojito: Another Cubian classic and not what you think when it comes to how did it start. It was Cubian tribesmen who gave this conjunction to British crew when they arrived on the island to help with illness such as scurvy. The original spirit was Aguardiente (which translates into "fire water"). The British brought their rum supplies and eventually the drink was made with that. It is nice combination of rum, sugar, lime juice, mint and club soda. There will be some muddling of the mint in this drink. You can either shake or build this drink but either way is amazing!! It was another Hemingway favorite that he wrote into a book. Yes, he loves his drinks.,..sometimes a little too much!!! Caipirinha: This is a Brazilian national drink which is not as popular as the others but definitely refreshing drink for those hot days or when you have friends over and like a drink you can savor for awhile amongst company. This cocktail deals with rum's brother (Cachaca) which is from the sugar cane juice instead of sugar cane byproduct molasses. It tropical earthy tones are great for this simple drink. You will be do again some muddling and also scoring of your limes to make this drink. It can be shaken or build in the glass. This drink was also made with Aguardiente but as I found out through Paola (our Brazilian expert) that it can be made as well with Vodka or Sake.

The region of Savoie Mont Blanc in France is known for a lot of things - mountains, skiing, hiking, Michelin starred restaurants, but not usually its wines. That’s all changing as more and more of them are winning awards. I was invited by Savoie Mont Blanc Tourism to meet the folks who are spreading the word about the wines I’ve been sipping with my tartiflette when shushing the slopes of Chamonix. First I met Bernard Vissoud the Savoie wine specialist, who took me on a tour of the vineyards teaching me the history of the region, then I toured two of the local vineyards the Domaine Dupraz and the Domaine Edmond Jacquin who are open to visitors and ready to talk wines with anyone who is in the neighborhood. I have definitely become an ambassador of Savoie wines and have been introducing them to everyone I know. But don’t think just because it’s wine country that I wasn’t drinking a cocktail or two. 1883 Syrups are located in Savoie Mont Blanc and I was treated to a cocktail-making class with Brand Ambassador Johnny Salvo. Our cocktail of the week is one of the many that Johnny made for me. It’s called the Mauresque Mai Tai - the Savoie twist on the Mai Tai or you could say a tiki twist on the local Mauresque cocktail, originally made with Absinthe and Orgeat. Ingredients 20 ml Pastis 20 ml Classic Rum (Cuban or Puerto Rican) 20 ml Sugar cane rum (Cachaca, Rhum Agricole) 20 ml Orgeat Syrup (Almond) 1 teaspoon of Orange Blossom Water 20 ml squeezed lime juice Aromatic Bitters Garnish - mint, slice of dried lime and a star anise Method Put all the ingredients into a shaker Add ice and then shake Double strain into a rocks glass filled with crushed ice Add a few dashes of aromatic bitters on the top Garnish with mint, slice of dried lime and a star anise You’ll find this recipe and all the cocktails of the week on ALushLifeManual.com, where you’ll also find all the ingredients in our shop. If you are heading to Savoie Mont Blanc, check out my latest post on bestbitsworldwide.com or the Savoie Mont Blanc Tourism or http://www.savoie-mont-blanc.com. Ep 5. Purple Rain & Cachaca by To Be Deported Podcast
On this week's episode of The Speakeasy, Damon and Sother are joined in studio by Pete Nevenglosky, cachaça specialist and founder of Avuá Cachaça. Pete talks about the different types of aged, single-source Avuá Cachaça and his adventures in rural Brazil to find the best distillers for his brand.
Dragos Axinte, founder of Novo Fogo Cachaca is the prototypical entrepreneur. He's part inventor, part creative, and wholly health focused. For much of his life he spent time in communist Romania, from which his family ultimately left to venture to the states. Landing in LA, Dragos and his father continued the family trade, soldering. This mechanical aptitude transformed into multiple patents and ultimately the opportunity to start a new business. A curious affection for Brazil aimed the project towards Cachaca and now many marks later, Dragos travels to help people find health and great cane sips. We talk cancer, patents, the classics, and more.
With too many accomplishments to name, Daniel de Oliveira, or simply DDO, has traveled the world making a wonderful name for himself. But with all the traveling and jet setting, where does the time to balance one's personal life come into the mix. We chat GNR, politics, love, and more.

Military, music, and mixology: Nate Casablanca Whitehouse is the science/art hybrid that we see so often in this industry. Good with music, but also good with details. NCW's sobering realization that he didn't want to be a musician anymore turned into a successful foray into law and booze. What was created out of necessity, Avua Cachaca became the answer to the more aggressive Cachaca's in the US market. With its impeccable design, lush flavor, and beautiful expression of the Brazilian terroir, Avua soon rose to the ranks as the best cachaca available in the US. A few years later, there are lessons learned but still so many opportunities for education.. We talk divorce, chemistry, distilling, and true generosity still present in our fellow man.
Matt James & Megan Ternes head down towards the equator to find this week's drink of choice: Novo Fogo Cachaca! It's like sunshine in a bottle.
