Lazy, one might say (and she does), but in a way that is actually a superpower. Without actually realising she had any special talent, it required her boss to come up to her and say “Can you run a workshop and show everyone else how you do what you do?” and from there, a new career was born. In our conversation, we cover topics such as: - how to start a new business when you've no idea what you're doing; - why focus is not your starting point when it comes to being effective; and  - the importance of expending energy only on the things you can control. At the end of the day, it's all about doing more with less stress. Efficiency is the new cool kid on the block. With life being more hectic with every turn, there has to be a better way to deal with the overwhelm. Alexis Haselberger, founder of Alexis Haselberger Coaching and Consulting, can guide you in creating a more efficient life that will allow you to be more present in your everyday activities. Alexis realized a common thread with 20 plus years of experience working in a fast-paced start-up environment. The more efficient you become, the more time you create in your day. Today, Alexis fills her days coaching Fortune 500 companies, such as Google, Lyft, and Capital One, on how their teams can work more efficiently together to improve their bottom line. She shares all her tips with you today on the One Big Tip podcast.Alexis Hasleberger is an efficiency coach that understands how difficult it can be to optimize your time and be present in all parts of your life. Having an efficiency-focused brain since she was a child, her goal was to get the most done in the least amount of time, with the least amount of effort, while providing excellent results. For the first 15 years of her career, Alexis worked in the San Francisco Bay area for different startups, where she managed everything but sales and engineering.  People started to take notice of her innate talent and began approaching her to coach or give workshops on efficiency and time management. When the last start-up she worked for closed its doors, Alexis decided to venture out on her own using her talent for efficiency and time management and created Alexis Haselberger Coaching and Consulting. The first step in productivity and efficiency is to create a to-do list. Does the question become which is better, digital time management or pen to paper? Alexis feels there is a place for both. Pen and paper are fantastic tools for jotting things down on the fly or during a call or meeting. But if you don't input the information into a digital system, there is a lot of time spent writing and rewriting your list. Pen and paper lists also require you to store a lot of information in your head. This can weigh you down. Digital to-do lists have a lot of benefits. First, they are typically available on all your devices, so you can seamlessly transition from phone to laptop to iPad. Second, they can organize like tasks with like tasks and create deadlines with the click of a button. Although digital is the way to go for efficiency, people have to do what they are most comfortable with. Another tip for productivity and efficiency is realism. When you create your to-do lists, you need to work within your reality. Create a schedule based on the amount of time you have to dedicate to the work you have before you and not the amount of time you wish you had. This creates overwhelm, and you walk away without accomplishing anything. The most straightforward process to creating efficiency is creating tomorrow's to-do list today at the end of your workday. The reason is twofold. First, it allows you to have a brain dump before leaving your desk, office, or workplace. This is important because it will enable you to walk away from the work portion of your life and be fully present in your personal life. This balance is challenging for people who work from home or are solopreneurs. It's hard to create boundaries and transitions in either of those scenarios. The second reason this works as an efficiency tool as well as it does, is that it lets you start your day with a plan. There's no thinking about how your day will look. You sit down, tackle that list and work your way through it. Of course, there's constant tweaking and add-ons, but you know what you need to focus on for the most part. Another barrier people face is realizing that they don't need to do everything themselves. People need to delegate a lot of their responsibility to others who canSupport the show

Alexis then started her own coaching company where she helps her clients with time management and productivity. We then talk quite tactical about her favourite ways to increase productivity. This is so interesting to hear her views on tactics for success. We then talk about her change in business model to a hybrid online and group coaching sessions to reach the most people.  I found Alexis fun and an interesting guest and her story was amazing and her insight was masterly in increasing productivity. Some people let the day or week just sweep them along in a wave of things that need doing. That is a phrase that stuck with me from my conversation with Alexis Haselberger. I was reminded of this again when a social media backlash was directed at Molly-Mae Hague the creative director of ‘PrettyLittleThing' when she said on a podcast  “we all have the same 24 hours in a day.” The backlash was about privilege, but the point is she was both right and wrong because the wealthier we are, the more we get to choose how we use our time. Yet even limited hours used wisely can make a massive difference between meeting our basic needs or creating the life we truly desire.   I have said before, watching Netflix and hoping things will get better is not going to solve anyone's problems. However, if you are looking for the lazy route to success, this could be the show for you. Alexis Haselberger is a super-organizer. Ever since childhood, she has planned her life, not because she is driven to a career or great achievement, but because she is a self confessed lazy person who wants to maximize her time doing what she wants. In her own words… “My efficiency was driven by my laziness and I refer to myself as a very driven lazy person” Today Alexis is a Time Management and Productivity Coach helping people do more with less stress. She offers coaching, workshops and online courses.  She says it's all about finding what works for you. Have you ever felt like the day went by, and you didn’t get much done? Or maybe you looked at all the things that you have to do and thought: I don’t have enough time for this. If so, then this episode is for you. Today’s we have Alexis Haselberger, time management and productivity coach, who will teach us that we do have time, much more than what we think, we just need to learn how to be more efficient.  It’s all about developing a strategy that works for us and helps us get things done without feeling stressed.  Alexis has worked with individual clients of all ages and with companies like Google, Lyft, Workday, Capital One, Upwork, among others. In this episode, she shares some tips and tricks that will help us to start using our time with intention.  Highlights:Alexis works with people to help them be more efficient, this means, help them find a way to systematize things and do more with their time, so they won’t feel stressed out because they had so much to do and little time to do it, or because there’s a mismatch between the efforts and the results. What is it on your plate? Alexis knows that every person is different, and therefore, the time management and productivity plan has to be created according to who you are. Track your time! For Alexis, the first step is keeping a detailed record of what you do every day, and how much time you invest in it.Use your time with intention. For Alexis, productivity has to do with choosing. Deciding what to do with your time, with the list of things that you have to do is very different from just letting the day happen to us, even if we decide to take a time off and disconnect from work. You’ll feel that you have accomplished more when you start to plan and choose. The dopamine hit: Alexis defines this as the satisfaction you get when you cross things on your list. There isn’t a universal strategy that works for everyone. Each person can have their own strategy and be equally efficient.Over the years, Alexis listened to clients say that planning and standardizing procedures took a lot of time. But they failed to realize that it was an investment for the future: you must take some time now to plan, standardize, and create templates, but in the future, it will save you time, it will make your work and others easier.Alexis and Lara geek out about tips and tricks to help you organize your work and be more efficient with your time.  If you want to know more about Alexis and her workshops and coaching programs, visit her website or follow her on Instagram and Youtube. I know it's hard but think about what can you turn off? What are the nonessential things? Some devices actually let you turn off notifications during certain times; you can put on do not disturb mode, for example, so that you really can focus on getting the things done that are important, that you prioritize. And then when it doesn't work out, and just the way that it's supposed to, we feel like we failed”  “Have a single trusted system for your tasks. What happens when we have these things in all the places is that we can't prioritize like, we are just grasping at things like does this look good? Should we do this? We can't properly plan either because we don't know the full breadth of everything.”  “Figure out where all your stuff is coming from, where all your tasks, your projects, etc., and spend an hour or two putting it all in one place, right so that we can actually look at it linearly because humans can't multitask.”  Resources Mentioned:  Get your FREE downloadable Guide to Minimize Distractions. As leaders our time is one of our most important resources. It is constantly being demanded for, used, abused, and ultimately we never have enough of it. We need to maximize our time in order to ensure that we are operating effectively for ourselves, our teams, and our organization. In order to achieve this we need to increase our productivity, maximize our time-management, and become as efficient as possible. Exactly why today’s guest is here with us.  Alexis is a productivity, time-management and efficiency expert.  She spent the first 15+ years of her career managing operations and HR at several early-stage start-ups, where there was always way more to do than people to do it.  But she also believes that work-life balance is essential for everyone, even though the definition may be different for everyone. As a result, she began to develop and implement productivity systems in the companies she worked for, and in her life, to ensure that goals were met, balls were not dropped, and that, most importantly, she and those around her stayed sane. Her productivity and time-management systems, techniques, tricks and hacks can be customized to any team, individual or household.   Topics During this interview, Alexis and I discuss the following topics: How she became a productivity expertWhy balance is so importantHow to prioritize effectivelyWhy taking a break is so important Guest Resources If you are interested in learning more about Alexis and his resources be sure to check out the following links: Check out Alexis’ WebsiteConnect with Alexis on LinkedInFollow Alexis on InstagramSubscribe to Alexis’ YouTube ChannelLike Alexis on FaceBook Moving Forward Leadership Resources Keep on top of Moving Forward Leadership with all the resources which I have established for you: POWER Goals Program – If you are ready to stop complaining and start achieving those goals which you have been trying to achieve for some time now. I’m hesitant to frame everything I write these days in terms of its utility to cope with our new COVID-induced way of working. It seems like it’s all we read about. But, even though it’s draining, it’s also a tremendous opportunity to learn and improve ourselves, especially how we work. So forgive me, but this short piece will add to this endeavor. When I spoke with Alexis Haselberger for the People at Work podcast, we were pre-COVID with the luxury of outside adventures, brunches, and vacation plans taking shape. We blissfully engaged in a lighthearted, yet impactful, conversation on productivity and specifically how to use our time at work better so that we can have more time for other parts of our lives. Now times have rapidly changed. But, the trusted system that Alexis advocates is prescient. We need to prioritize, simplify, plan, and set goals to reduce our mental load more now than ever before. As we all juggle new priorities and demands on our time, we have to find ways to work smarter and streamline everything we do. Not only is Alexis a time management and productivity expert, she’s also a friendly voice at a time of strife. This episode will help you think about your work day and how you can make it work better for you. If we’re being forced to change our lives, let’s choose to change for good. About our guest: Alexis is a time management and productivity coach who helps people do more, and stress less. She knows that it's possible to kill it at work AND have a fulfilling personal life with lots of time for yourself, and she's on a mission to help others get there too. John interviews Alexis Haselberger, a time management and productivity coach, to learn about her professional development, working in HR and operations to starting her own consulting business. We talked about her process for coaching individual clients, and she shares some best practices for getting organized and getting tasks completed. Do not miss today's episode!   Episode Highlights: Alexis Haselberger talks about her early career and her ability to manage time.  What were her early ways of assisting others with time management?   What type of education resources was Alexis taking advantage of?  At what point did Alexis Haselberger build up the business side of her time management abilities?  How does Alexis customize her training to individuals?   What is an example of a type of client she has been able to help?    How can we handle our distractions that can pull us away from work?    The prioritizing system that Alexis recommends is platform system agnostic.   She breaks down the power of capture, prioritize, act, and document.  How does she build flexibility into their task management system?  The stuff you got done today is more important than the stuff you didn’t get done.  Have a realistic amount of time for taking breaks.     3 Key Points: Alexis starts individual training with getting to know who the person is as they already are. Then she customizes the training to that person incorporating the constraints and needs they have.    When Alexis is working and is having an unrelated thought that could potentially take away her concentration, she writes it down with a checkbox next to it if it is a to-do item. The four steps to manage your time to get tasks done are: capture, prioritize, act, and document.    Tweetable Quotes: “Never work more than 40 hours a week because then they will expect it.” – Alexis Haselberger (Alexis Haselberger’s mother) “You are best at your work when you have time off, right? When we are working 16 hours a day, we are not actually very effective. I think the studies show that after about 6 hours or so, we are just not that effective.” – Alexis Haselberger “In my business, I have a couple of buckets. I have individual training. I have group coaching and then I have corporate workshops.” – Alexis Haselberger   Resources Mentioned: Linkedin: John Chapman Alexis Haselberger: Linkedin Alexis Haselberger’s Website
