Artist, author and entrepreneur Jane Pollak joins Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Blot for a conversation on setting aside excuses and doing what you love NOW. An artist throughout her life, Jane took a detour for a couple of decades as a coach for creative entrepreneurs. But she reclaimed her role as an artist at the start of the pandemic when everything shut down and she had just learned a new craft — Penny Rug Pillow-making. She re-created herself at warp speed (though it felt like millennia to her), accomplishing in less than three years (and getting the attention of high-end interior designers) what took decades to build the first time around when her art form was Ukrainian Easter eggs. In this episode, Jane shares the fascinating story of her entrepreneurial and creative journey, including displaying her work at the White House and drawing the attention of a high-profile tech pioneer. She also provides insight into the importance of shutting out negativity and surrounding oneself with a team of supporters. SUMMARY: Susan Chesnutt and her special guest Martin Kofsky talk about his recent article that focuses on the rights of grandparents. Martin has been litigating and working in family law for 30 years. Sit back and settle in for some good information and food for thought. HIGHLIGHTS: [00:01:45] The discussion begins with Martin describing his experience with offending and non offending parents and what that means for the rights of the child. [00:03:00] Martin gives an example of a case where the maternal grandparent's rights of the child were being threatened. The child was cared for by them for 5 years and then the other grandparents attempt to assert control. [00:05:15] What happens when a set of grandparents has never tried to have a relationship with the child? What does the law say or not say in these circumstances? [00:06:15] Susan asks very important questions about the child's constitutional rights because of the death of a parent and in the care of a grandparent. [00:08:00] Martin and Susan deep dive on a Florida statute as it relates to when a reunification happens and its narrow minded pitfalls. [00:17:30] Martin explains the deployment statute and all that it entails to soldiers and sailors who are parents; the phrase “equal protection” comes into play. Tune in for the intriguing perspective. [00:24:30] Relocation situations are typically never in the child's best interest. What is the best solution when a former spouse is married to someone in the military and relocation on one side is necessary. You will want to hear more about this topic. [00:26:45] Martin goes through a tough case that will give you context on what the court needs to show when a parent relocates and the other parent wants the children to stay where they are as the primary residence. [00:32:45] Susan asks Martin a hypothetical, if he could write a grandparents right statute, what would it entail? QUOTES: Martin Kofsky: as it pertains to grandparents rights in Florida “The rights are limited when there is a parent who's deceased. There can be some room for a grandparent to have a relationship with the child, but still this, the rights of the surviving parent remain paramount.” Martin Kofsky: “It's easy to identify bruises. It's easy to identify cigarette burns. It's easy to identify strap marks from a belt. It's much harder to identify and quantify the emotional scars that might've been caused by, years of emotional or psychological abuse” Susan Chesnutt: in regard to dependency statute in Florida: “When you said that the statutes were hypocritical, is that the dependency statute on the grandparents rights goes so far to say that the grandparents should be able to show affection and give gifts and letters from the grandparents or other family.” Susan Chesnutt: “I've read a statistic today that 7% of the children in the United States live with a grandparent or grandparents…To me, that's a big number of kids who are not with their parents, for whatever reason.” Susan Chesnutt: “This has been fantastic. I will say hands down, totally honest, the best conversation I've had about grandparents' rights since I've been a lawyer.” RESOURCES: Susan Chesnutt https://www.thechesnuttlawfirm.com https://www.thechesnuttlawfirm.com/child-custody/ Martin Kofsky https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-kofsky-55679412/ https://familylawfla.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Fam-2022-Spring-Issue-3_WEB-FINAL.pdf

A year after George Floyd’s death, is America ready for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission? Why is equality against the law not enough for racism to be defeatted? And how will America’s self-image as a country that pulled itself up from its bootstraps have to change when it finally admits to the huge role slavery played in the wealth it enjoys today? Olúfémi Táíwò is Professor of African Political Thought at the Africana Studies and Research Center, at Cornell University. Born in Nigeria, his work aims to expand the African reach in philosophy and, simultaneously, to indigenize the discipline, making it more relevant to Africa and African students. He is the author of How Colonialism Preempted Modernity in Africa, and last spring Taiwo wrote a powerful essay for The Philosopher journal entitled: “Does the United States need a truth and reconciliation commission?”, now being turned into a book. What do we have to learn from the Ancient Greeks when it comes to thinking about the corruption of our own political system? Since corruption doesn’t seem to go away simply by electing different leaders, might it be fixed by rethinking our constitutional foundations? And what did Machiavelli mean when he said that “an evil-disposed citizen cannot effect any changes for the worse in a republic, unless it be already corrupt”?Camila Vergara is a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University in New York, and the author of Systemic Corruption: Constitutional Ideas for an Anti-Oligarchic Society. In her book, Camila argues that our current understanding of corruption as a moral and legal failure that concerns individual bad actors is too narrow, obstructing a much richer understanding of the corruption of government as a systemic problem. New Zealander, Aimee Walker—pastor, author, Bible Study writer and teacher—first came on my show early on in December of 2019. She recently launched her first book: But I Flourish: Learning to Thrive in Every Season and I wanted to share some of what you will gain from reading it, as well as introduce you to Aimee in case you missed her the first time round. Aimee knows that we all are called to mentor and to be mentored by someone who is just a little further down the road in their spiritual maturity, and she wished she had had someone in her life ten years ago while wrestling with some of these issues in her walk with God. Her prayer is that her book will encourage those women who may be struggling in similar areas. Some of my favorite parts had to do with "living loved," looking at my circumstances through the character of God, and reflecting on the difference between resignation and surrender. (And about 27 more good points.) You can purchase your copy of "But I Flourish: Learn to Thrive in Every Season" on Amazon. Welcome back, Aimee! Thanks again for your time and ministry. You can find Aimee here: https://www.aimeewalker.co.nz/ And her Bible Studies here: https://joyfullifemagazine.com/product-category/bible-studies/ Order your copy of The Joyful Life Magazine today! Spring Issue is now available for preorder (and I'm grateful to have a few words included.) In case you didn't try Aimee's recipe for Caramel Slice last time around, I'll repeat it below. Ingredient List: Base 1 cup butter 2/3 cup sugar 1 egg, lightly beaten 2/3 cup plain flour (if using a gluten-free flour you may want to use closer to 1 cup) 1/2 cup desiccated coconut pinch salt Caramel 11 tbsp. butter 1 cup brown sugar 4 tbsp golden syrup 1 tin sweetened condensed milk 4 tbsp plain flour Icing 7 oz. dark chocolate (I use 85% cocoa solids) 3 tbsp butter Method: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease and line a slice tin with parchment paper. Cream the butter and sugar together until thick and pale. Beat the egg in and then add in the flour, coconut, and salt. Beat until well combined. Spread the mix in an even layer into your prepared tin and then bake for 18 minutes. Remove the base from the oven. While the base is cooking, make your caramel by melting all the ingredients in a saucepan/pot over medium heat. Stir continually to avoid burning on the bottom until the butter has melted and the sugar is dissolved. Pour it over the hot base and then return to the oven for another 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and then cool in the tin before icing. To make the icing, gently melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water, stirring gently to combine. Pour over the top of the caramel and place in the fridge to set. Cut into slices and serve. (store the slice in the fridge)
Something different this week. We'll be reflecting on the Spring Issue of a magazine that cuts through the heart of what we love doing here on both Blue Moon Americana as well as Deeper Roots. There are a handful of publications that make the cut but No Depression magazine is truly special and the Spring 2021 issue is something to revel in. The writing, the artists, and the arc of 'The Great American Songbook', from Stephen Foster to Louis Armstrong is given thoughtful and insightful treatment. Our show this week puts a soundtrack with a century of America's music explored: Dock Boggs' Pretty Polly, George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, The Blue Sky Boys' cover of Knoxville Girl, and some incredible Latin vocals from one Omara Portuondo. The magazine is worth the read and the music is worth a listen. Tune in on a Saturday among the Sonoma County skies for the best of community radio.

I Like Your Work: Conversations with Artists, Curators & Collectors
How do you balance being an artist and a mom while dealing with haters who voice their opinion on your life choices? Kate Sable is a painter who talks about having kids when the opinion surrounding her was children and art do not mix. Spoiler alert, this was less than ten years ago, and sadly this is a sentiment many of us still face. Kate shares stories from growing up outside of DC, grad school crits, and how she learned to trust herself in painting. She shares tips from her experience being a painter who is also a mother of three to how she approaches making her work. Kate's paintings of curvilinear and gridded abstract forms are an ongoing investigation between analytical and intuitive use of color, line, gesture, and shape. Her practice directly engages personal metaphor and inquiry, while remaining strongly grounded in the painting process. Her work was recently included in DREAM JOURNAL, a three-person exhibition curated by Alex Ebstein at Goucher College (Baltimore, MD), a two-person exhibition at Equilateral Gallwry (Los Angeles, California), and recent group exhibitions include “We Go Fast” curated by Ryan Travis Christian at Left Field Gallery (Los Osos, CA), I Like Your Work Podcast’s juried exhibition Be.Long. at Dutoit Gallery (Dayton, OH), and Hen House’s All Female "Tiny Show" at Brookland Exchange (Washington, DC). Her work is included in the Spring Issue 17 of ArtMaze Magazine and was also recently featured in the curatorial project Air in Space, and also the publication Friend of the Artist (Volume 8). Reviews include The Washington Post, Washington City Paper, Two Coats of Paint, among others. Originally from Virginia, Sable earned a BFA from Virginia Tech and MFA from American University in Washington, DC. She lives and works just outside of Washington, DC in Reston, VA. TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: Dealing with graduate school rejection. Studios inside the home vs outside the home and how looking is an important part of the process. Time is a precious, keeping a strict studio schedule. Keeping a strict schedule and having boundaries. Growing to trust yourself in your work. When color makes you work. Physicality in painting, working large scale and exploring small work. Do not let guilt get you down! Bobbie Ann Mason's short story “Live-Hang,” from our Spring Issue, is the story of two friends who come from different worlds. Dave and Miguel meet in the gutting room of a chicken processing plant. Both are working class, but Dave and his wife, Trish, are white U.S. citizens, while Miguel and his wife, Maria, are undocumented Mexican immigrants. Even though their jobs diverge—Dave uses a connection to get a job installing satellite dishes, while Miguel is promoted to the more dangerous live-hang room—their lives become increasingly intertwined. But then the threat of deportation arrives, and with it the potential of a family being ripped apart. Only a brave and dangerous act can keep these families together. Mason talks about how she came to write this story, and how topical it is—given the recent news about ICE arresting children in hospitals, detaining the single parents of disabled kids, separating families, and raiding workplaces like the chicken plant.Go beyond the episode:Bobbie Ann Mason’s short story, “Live-Hang”Listen to “Our Town,” a two-part story from This American Life about the undocumented immigrants in an Alabama poultry townRead T.
