#935 - Five O'Clock Somewhere - Don Rollins & Jim "Moose" Brown Interview Are you here? …. Just where are you? Whether you're in New York or Los Angeles, well, really anywhere in the world—five o'clock is synonymous with calling it a day and enjoying a cold beverage. Maybe your cold drink is the famous Hurricane cocktail made famous by Pat O'Brien's bar in New Orleans. We heard our friend Dave Hooser was hanging around in the French Quarter, but he didn't necessarily wait till five o'clock. He knew it was…five o'clock (pause) somewhere. Most of you know the song “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” that was recorded and made famous by Alan Jackson and the late Jimmy Buffett. It became a very important song for Jimmy Buffett. “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” remains Jimmy Buffett's only #1 hit. He performed it close to 600 times over the last 20 years. In fact, Jimmy sang it as a duet with Mac McAnally at his very last performance on July 2nd, 2023.   Your host Paul Leslie had the honor and pleasure of interviewing Don Rollins and Jim “Moose” Brown, the two songwriters who wrote the hit “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.” The interview took place in a recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee—years and years ago. We'll play it shortly. “It's Five O Clock Somewhere” written by Rollins & Brown catapulted Jimmy Buffett even more into the public spotlight and gave him lots of airplay on country radio. It spent 8 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the Summer of 2003. The song also won the CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year as well as the Grammy for Best Country Song of 2003. It was also #17 on the US Hot 100 making it the most successful pop hit for both Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett. Billboard named “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” as the Most Played Country Song in 2003.  Right quick: The Paul Leslie Hour has been archiving and distributing interviews for more than 19 years. It's made possible in part by listeners and viewers like you. Give yourself and others the gift of stories, just go right here. I think it's time we played this interview with Don Rollins and Jim “Moose” Brown, two very talented songwriters, right here on The Paul Leslie Hour.

New Wave of British Heavy Metal. UU. In the United States, she has had four multi-platinum albums, six platinum albums, and 19 Billboard top 40 singles, while in Canada she had eight straight platinum albums, and she has sold over 50 million albums worldwide.[citation needed] She is also a four-time Grammy Award winner. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2022.Her 1979 debut album, In the Heat of the Night, was her breakthrough in North America, especially in Canada where it reached No. 3 on the album chart. Two singles from it were hits: "Heartbreaker" and "We Live for Love", the latter written by her lead guitarist and future husband, Neil Giraldo. Her second album, 1980's Crimes of Passion, was her most successful work, peaking at No. 2 in North America and France, being certified 4× and 5× platinum in the US and Canada, respectively. Its single "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" reached the top 10 in the US and Canada and is considered to be her best-known song. Grande adds a husky verse of her own to ‘Save Your Tears' on the remix, and appears in the video as a cyborg. Watch it here: ‘Save Your Tears' originally appeared on The Weeknd's fourth studio album ‘After Hours', released in March 2020. In a four-star review of the album, NME ‘s Luke Morgan Britton called ‘After Hours' “The Weeknd's strongest record in some time”. “But still there's a nagging question of what's to come,” he added. “Because once you go pop, and then back to your roots, where exactly do you go next? That's precisely the problem The Weeknd faces with his next effort.” The singer-songwriter has had one of his biggest years following the release of‘After Hours'. It featured the hits ‘Heartless', ‘Save Your Tears', and ‘Blinding Lights'. The latter has become the first song ever to spend an entire year in the Top 10 of the US Hot 100 singles chart . Despite controversially being snubbed at this year's Grammy Awards – which he has since said he will now boycott – The Weeknd has hinted that he might have one last surprise for fans before he concludes his ‘After Hours' era . The Weeknd also recently announced plans to donate $1million (£723k) to help hunger relief efforts in Ethiopia as conflict continues in the country. From Publisher: NME Ariana Grande just gave herself a drag-inspired makeover Captioning the first clip, Ariana wrote “@Gottmik I really want to be u but it's just not… in the cards” and told her 232 million followers, “Help me! Guess who doesn't know how to do drag make-up? Love you.” She then added another story zooming in on her face and said, “Love you so much!” while again tagging Gottmik and writing “I MEANT WELL @GOTTMIK”. From Publisher: Cosmopolitan Ariana Grande Breaks Another Billboard Record With ‘Positions' Ariana Grande is back inside the top 10 on this week's Billboard 200 with her album Positions , which returns to the region for another go between Nos. 1 and 10. The pop singer's latest full-length shoots from No. 17 to No. 6, bolstered by a huge sales frame. But what sparked the surge in purchases? Five months after it was first released, vinyl LPs of Positions finally shipped, which means all the sales of the title on wax were counted in the previous tracking frame at once. Thanks to that fact, Grande's latest isn't just a successful vinyl launch, it makes history. Last week, Positions , sold 32,000 copies on vinyl, as tens of thousands of fans rushed to their local record store, a big box retailer or went online to grab a copy of the title. That sum isn't just impressive, it's one of the largest ever, and when looking solely at releases by women, there's now a new best showing. Positions now holds the record for the largest sales week for an album by a woman on vinyl, at least since MRC Data (formerly known as Nielsen) began tracking those purchases more than two decades ago.

In early dating years our partner’s face lights up at the thought of sex, they tell us with their eyes that we make them hot. The gleam in their eyes hits our body, hits our center, hits our being.  Feeling that we light up their world is a turn-on! Secure attachment begins with the loving gaze of our mother or parent – cradled in the crook of their elbow – they smile and coo because we are theirs.  Later in childhood we know we belong and make our parents proud when we see it in their eyes… not so much for our accomplishments but because we are their son or daughter.  In romantic partnership, sexual desire that radiates from our partner’s face and gaze is a powerful reminder of belonging, safety. We revel in being the person who excites our partner. What happens though when our partner is willing to have sex but doesn’t give us that deep reassurance that we are desirable with a gleam in their eye? Can we get it back? How do we tell them what we need from them to turn on?  Listen as George and Laurie get through to each other about how sexual desire is tied to being the gleam in our partner’s eyes.

From 1985 to 1995, Jeanette, Gioia, and Ann ruled the Top 40, R&B, and Adult Contemporary charts in the US and throughout the world. Their albums garnered seven back-to-back Top 10 hits on Billboard’s US Hot 100 — more Top 10 hits than any girl group besides the Supremes. In March 2015, Billboard magazine named the band the eighth most-successful girl group of all-time.When the ride ended in 1996, they took some time off to raise families and work on other projects. Jeanette's appeared in films, on stage, and released a solo EP, "Lovely." She also married and has a beautiful family with two college-age boys. In 2006, Exposé jumped back into touring. We met when Nu Shooz joined the lineup of 80s acts on the Freestyle Explosion Tour in 2013. Jeanette, Gioia, and Ann are some of my favorite people to hang out with on the road. Guy (band)Origins (1986–1988)[edit]Guy was formed in Harlem, New York in 1987 by R&B singer-songwriters Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, and Timmy Gatling. Riley and Gatling were childhood friends growing up in Harlem, and previously collaborated in the band Kids At Work.[1] Hall was recruited to join what would become Guy.[2] As well as writing songs for their own group, Riley and Hall collaborated on other songwriting and production projects, including Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" and Johnny Kemp's "Just Got Paid".[1]Mainstream success and Breakup (1988–1991)[edit]Under the guidance of manager Gene Griffin, the group signed to Andre Harrell's Uptown Records, and released their self-titled debut album Guy in June 1988. Gatling, however, had left after recording of the album was completed and he was replaced by Hall's younger brother Damion Hall. Gatling would later release his solo debut Help in 1989 on Tommy Boy/Warner Bros. Records in 1989[3] and become a producer, penning and writing songs such as "Promises, Promises" for Christopher Williams and "When Will I See You Smile Again?" for Bell Biv DeVoe.Five singles were released from the album, none of which fared well on the main US Billboard Hot 100 chart, where only one release charted. However, four of the singles became significant R&B hits. The singles, "'Round And 'Round (Merry-Go-Round of Love), (US R&B #24); "Groove Me", (US R&B #4); "Teddy's Jam", (US R&B #5); "I Like", (US R&B #2); and "Spend the Night", (US R&B #15), propelled the album to double platinum status off the strength of those R&B hits.[1] Another song from the album, "Piece of My Love", also received some airplay on R&B stations. The album impressively climbed to #27 on the US Top 200 Album Chart without a major pop hit, and peaked at #1 on the R&B Album Chart.Following on the album's success, the band contributed the song "My Fantasy" to the soundtrack to Spike Lee's film Do The Right Thing in 1989. Griffin and Riley also worked with Boy George, producing his R&B hit "Don't Take My Mind On A Trip". However, that same year Guy split acrimoniously from Gene Griffin.[4][5] Riley continued to produce and remix for other artists and firmly established himself as the figurehead and driving force behind New Jack Swing.[6]In November 1990, Guy released its second album, entitled The Future. Although still not scoring top 40 pop hits, the album's five singles became R&B hits. The songs "Wanna Get Wit U", (US R&B #4); Let's Chill", (US R&B #3); "Do Me Right" (Featuring Heavy D), (US R&B #2); "D-O-G Me Out", (US R&B #8); and "Let's Stay Together", (US R&B #16) took the album to platinum status. The band also featured in Mario Van Peebles's film New Jack City, performing the song "New Jack City".[7]After the run of the album, the group split with Riley later citing "the tragedy of our ex-manager" Griffin as the reason for the group's disbandment.[4] One of the group's final recordings was their cover of Wilson Pickett's Land of a Thousand Dances, that was featured on the 1992 animated film FernGully: The Last Rainforest. In the 1990s, Riley focused on producing other artists such as Heavy D and Michael Jackson and he also formed another group, Blackstreet. The two Hall brothers each pursued solo careers during the 1990s.Reunions[edit]Guy have reformed periodically since their initial break-up, the first of which occurred in 1995, with the release of the song "Tell Me What You Like", but an album did not follow at that time.In 1999, Riley and the Hall brothers reunited to release their first album in nine years titled Guy III. The album featured the modest hit "Dancin'", which peaked at #19 on the US Hot 100 chart, becoming surprisingly their biggest hit on the pop charts. However, the album was poorly promoted and as quickly as it was released it dropped from the public consciousness. The group disbanded again soon after, but reformed periodically from 2005 onwards, and despite rumours of another album, they have yet to release another. In 2006 they were part of New Jack Reunion Tour line up, along with BLACKstreet, Tony! Toni! Toné!, After 7, New Edition, and SWV.Riley and the Hall brothers reunited at the 2009 BET Awards, performing "I Like" as part of a new jack swing medley.[8]Speaking in March 2010 to noted UK R&B writer Pete Lewis - Deputy Editor of the award-winning Blues & Soul - Riley confirmed he is no longer involved with Guy. He went on to perform with the group again in October 2010. But the reunion was short-lived following claims by other band members that Riley had not properly distributed royalties he had collected on behalf of Guy.[citation needed]On January 16, 2011, Aaron and Damion performed without Teddy at BET Honors in Washington DC. "Guy brought the audience to its feet with new-jack-swing-era hits Let's Chill and Groove Me." - The Washington Post. The performance at BET Honors became a trending topic on Twitter when it aired on February 21, 2011. The duo appeared again on February 17, 2011 on the TV One Black History Month special "Way Black When." As of 2013, Riley has announced he's returned to Guy and will be working with Guy as well as Blackstreet. Riley's return in 2013 was short and he left once again according to Aaron Hall. In August 2014, Riley announced via his official instagram that he has reunited with the Hall brothers with a new website and tour coming soon.[9]Members[edit]Present[edit]Teddy RileyAaron HallDamion HallPast[edit]Timmy Gatling See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

CeCe PenistonCeCe Peniston (/siːˈsiː ˈpɛnistən/; born Cecilia Veronica Peniston; September 6, 1969)[1] is an American recording artist and former beauty queen.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] In the early 1990s, she was one of the most successful dance club artists in the history of the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play, scoring five number one hits in the chart within three years.[9][10] Her signature song "Finally" (#5 in the Hot 100[10] and #2 in UK Top 75[11]) became one of the biggest dance singles, selling three million copies worldwide.[12]Peniston has performed at private engagements for Aretha Franklin's private birthday party in Detroit, Michigan, Pope John Paul II in Rome at the Vatican (as a member of the gospel band Sisters of Glory) and the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, during both of his inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C.[13] She was the first foreign female entertainer to perform in post-apartheid South Africa.[13][14]On February 4, 2011, Peniston signed a record deal with West Swagg Music Group/Bungalo Records, with full distribution through Universal Music Group Distribution, and announced release of a new solo album 15 years after her last studio set (I'm Movin' On from 1996 on A&M Records).[15]By the end of the year, however, only three digital singles had been issued including a new song called "Stoopid!",[16] and two cover versions of her prior hits, "Keep On Walkin'" and "Finally".[17][18]In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed her among the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time (as the 52nd) 1969–90: Early life[edit]Peniston was born in Dayton, Ohio, in United States, but spent the majority of her formative years in Phoenix, where she was raised since she was nine. As a daughter of a former military father, Ronald Peniston (born 1934, married Barbara Anne in 1960), she started singing at church[20] and doing plays and musicals such as H.M.S. Pinafore in the 6th grade. She participated in local karaoke contests and singing talent shows, while taking piano lessons.[4][8]She attended Trevor G. Browne High School, class of 1987, in Phoenix,[21] and landed a part in a local theater group's production of Bubblin' Brown Sugar[3][4] (playing the young Sweet Georgia Brown[22]). After earning her diploma, she continued to study liberal arts at the Phoenix College, where she got involved in athletics, and entered beauty pageants. She was crowned Miss Black Arizona in 1989[3][4][5][6][7][8][12] and Miss Galaxy in 1990.[3][7]Peniston began writing pop lyrics already at school. The words of her international hit "Finally" were purportedly penned during a chemistry class, while thinking about dating in college. Her music career began in January 1991, when Felipe "DJ Wax Dawg" Delgado, her friend and a record producer based also in Phoenix, asked Peniston to record back-up vocals for Tonya Davis, a black female rapper known as Overweight Pooch after her childhood nickname.[3][4][24]Davis, headed in a direction of a "new" Monie Love, was searching for a singer to add vocals to the title track of her album Female Preacher, which was to be released on A&M Records that summer. At a talent show she met a woman named Malaika LeRae Sallard, but when it came time to get Sallard into the studio, the rapper found she'd lost her future label-mate's number. When Delgado, who'd preferred Peniston instead, brought his favorite in to do background parts, the response from everyone was immediate, but did not move the Pooch to invite Peniston back for more vocals – unless she was successful in locating Sallard.[24]Later, as it became clear that Peniston was leaping from the Overweight Pooch's album to the top of the charts, rumor had it the Pooch was stewing over Peniston's using Female Preacher as her springboard. Tonya Davis, pregnant at the time of recording her album, swore she harbored no jealousy towards Peniston. "There's no jealousy, because she has a voice. I gave her the chance, but I didn't give her a voice,"[24] the rapper insisted for Phoenix New Times in July 1992, and Peniston, interviewed by the same newspaper in the meantime, reacted by her own words. "I feel like anything's possible and I know one thing. If I wasn't at this spot, I still would be achieving to get to this spot."[24] Ironically enough, Sallard eventually threw in a few back-up vocals for Peniston on a song with a significant title, "You Win, I Win, We Lose", while Peniston, who in return played an agent to get a record deal also for Malaika (whose album Sugar Time scored in 1993 two Top 5 hits on the US Dance chart, including the No. 1 single "Gotta Know (Your Name)") mentioned the Pooch's name on her own debut album in addition, leaving Davis a note saying "thanks for letting me be a part of Female Preacher".[25]Besides the Peniston's vocal performance on three tracks in total, of which "I Like It" was released as a single with a moderate success (at #16 in US Dance[26] and #58 in UK Top 75[27] the following January), she was eventually given also a credit for co-writing two of those, "Kickin' Da Blues" and the title's, "Female Preacher". But the Overweight Pooch's album flopped on the market, and A&M was the first major label for Delgado himself, who was facing contractual disputes with the record company. After Manny Lehman (a DJ, then A&M Art Director and one of the executive producers of Female Preacher) also noticed the powerful voice of a still back-up vocalist, he offered Delgado a second chance, and commissioned him to produce a track for Peniston herself as a solo artist.[4] Not looking to lose his major deal connections, Delgado called on a hometown friend and music producer too, Rodney K. Jackson (they two met through mutual friends in Arizona), who was brought then to A&M family to help co-produce the Peniston's single, which was soon to be recognized as “Finally”.[28]Despite an initial label's resistance to sign Peniston to more than a one-off single deal, the “Finally” session resulted in recording her own debut album after the final approval of A&M's Vice President, Mark Mazzetti.[29]1991–92: Finally[edit]Peniston with Felipe Delgado at Chaton Studios in Phoenix, Arizona, putting final touches to her debut albumI was sitting in a Chicago pizza parlor in October and I heard over the radio 'Finally by CeCe Peniston'. I just started looking around going 'That's me! That's me!"[5]—Peniston recalled for EW magazine in 1992. (Almost 20 years later, when asked by Mega 104.3, she denied saying it, during her interview broadcast live on April 5, 2011.)[30]Peniston was 21 years old when her debut single "Finally" was released. The song burst on to the US club scene in the fall of 1991, where it became an instant dance anthem peaking, in October,[10] at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play for two weeks, while achieving a respectful starting position (at No. 29)[11] overseas. After her first song climbed the international charts, Peniston was headed into the studio to record a full-length album. However, she "had two months to pull the whole album together" and "didn't realize the impact the record was having until it reached the top five". She also described how difficult it was to begin her career at such an extreme pace, but [4] the result was a solidly produced ten track collection titled Finally, issued in January of the following year. Both the single and album entered the US Hot 100, as well as the UK Top 75 chart (at No. 5[10] and No. 2 for single,[11] respectively at No. 70[10] and at No. 10 for album release[11]), and ultimately earned Peniston a gold or silver certification in both countries. By the end of 1992 her debut (in Europe re-released in 1997 with a bonus remix "Finally '97") sold over 540,000 in United States.[31]"We Got a Love Thang", the second single (co-written by Chantay Savage), with a video clip in heavy rotation on TV music channels, went to No. 1 in the US Dance chart in February (No. 20 in the Hot 100),[10] and in England (where "Finally" skipped to No. 2 eventually[11]) "We Got a Love Thang" peaked at No. 6.[11] Might the only controversial question regarding the title remain who had provided background vocals on the record? While on her album Finally Darnnel Rush was credited, on its single release, the name of Kym Sims (who was a co-writer of "Keep On Walkin'") appeared as one of back-up vocalists actually.[32]With another hit record on the charts, Peniston began a year of touring clubs and small theaters in the USA in support of her album. Her travels started with a series of shows in the Philippines, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy, and after her return to the USA, Peniston continued with such R&B acts as Joe Public, the Cover Girls, R. Kelly and Levert.[4] While on tour, "Keep On Walkin'", a hip hop swinging composition, joined the list of Peniston's three consecutively running hits, bringing Peniston in June her third No. 1 in the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart (No. 15 in the Hot 100),[9] and another Top 10 hit in UK.[11] Later in August, that was also her highest outing in the US R&B chart, scoring at No. 3.On October 17, Billboard magazine announced that Peniston was the leading nominee in the Billboard Music Awards, being nominated in four categories: three times in the dance category with "Finally" (Best New Artist, Best Female Artist and Best Director), and one in the R&B/Rap category (Best Female Artist) for her urban hit "Keep On Walkin'".[33] Ultimately the song won two awards, and three of her singles released in 1992 were listed also within the Top 100 songs of the Billboard Year-End chart (at No. 20 with "Finally", at No. 61 with "Keep On Walkin'", and at No. 97 with "We Got a Love Thang"[34]). In the UK, Peniston was listed as the 20th of Top Selling Singles Artists in 1992.Additional songs taken from album Finally achieved the Top 40 status at least in the hip hop/R&B field. The grieving lyrics of her ballad "Inside That I Cried", co-written by Peniston's then-husband, Malik Byrd (who appeared also in its video), and produced in conjunction with Anita Baker's cohort, Steve Lindsey, peaked at No. 10 in the US R&B (No. 94 in the Hot 100[10] and No. 42 in UK Top 75[11]). The fifth single, a midtempo, "Crazy Love", climbed to No. 31 (No. 97 in the Hot 100[10] and No. 44 in UK[11]).By the end of the year, Peniston received several awards for her achievements in the music industry for 1992. Among them, one Billboard Music Award (as Best New Artist – Dance, the second went to the video director Claude Borenzweig), three ASCAP Awards (for Song of The Year, Most Performed Song of The Year, and Pop Songwriter of The Year), another three awards (as Best New Dance Artist, Best Dance Solo Artist, and for Best 12" Dance Record) at the Annual Winter Music Conference, and the BMI Urban Award of Achievement.[13] The album itself was nominated on a Soul Train Music Award '93 in the Best R&B/Soul Album – Female category.[35]1993–95: Thought 'Ya KnewWithin a year, Peniston was back in the studios to record her sophomore release, and the particular challenge for the vocalist was to avoid getting pigeonholed into the dance genre. For that reason, several ballads were arranged to appear on the final set (in the front with "Forever In My Heart", produced by Brian McKnight), of which, however, none was chosen for a single release. This time around, Peniston co-authored three of thirteen tracks ("Whatever It Is", "Give What I'm Givin" and "Maybe It's The Way",[4] a ballad about her father[8]), and along with Manny Lehman and Damon Jones, who later became Peniston's manager, she was also credited as an executive producer of her scheduled album release, Thought 'Ya Knew. Apart from others, also fellow Ohio-born singer Norma Jean Wright joined the session.[36]After a certain level of hesitation over the first single, "I'm in the Mood" (originally produced by Soulshock and Karlin) was picked to be the final leader—though as support for "Searchin'", which would be separately delivered on vinyl only to DJs. "I'm in the Mood" did well by itself, and with a video accompanied by a hip-hop remix from M-Doc & Jere M.C. (better known as In Da Soul) the title was on singles reproduced by David Morales for the dance floor. The song spawned Peniston's fourth No. 1[10] (dethroning from the top of the US Dance chart Aretha Franklin's "A Deeper Love") and peaked at No. 16 in UK[11] (#32 in the Hot 100[10]).On January 25, 1994, the album Thought 'Ya Knew, which was to represent Peniston's musical zenith at that time, arrived on all available formats, including digital compact cassettes. However, as the record promptly entered the music charts, it was soon to be evident Thought 'Ya Knew was not enjoying the high-profile success of her previous set Finally. After its progress had stalled in the Billboard 200 at No. 96,[10] Thought 'Ya Knewclimbed to No. 31 in the UK,[11] but the album charted for only two weeks in the UK.Not certain about the second single either, "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" was accepted to become the British follow-up. But the track, remixed by Eddie Gordon's West End production team, had no supporting music video, and after peaking at No. 36 in April in the United Kingdom,[11] an alternative title ("I'm Not Over You") was chosen for the US market as the second cut from the Thought 'Ya Knew album."I'm Not Over You" (written by Steve Hurley, Jamie Principle, and M-Doc) might have missed the highest position of the US Dance chart, but only by about one point (at No. 2),[10] and the single was later classified in the overall Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart as the ninth most successful track of 1994 (leaving "I'm in the Mood" far behind, at #44). However, although the song had sealed the Top 10 of the US R&B chart, it did not succeed in the Hot 100 that much, failing to crack Top 40 (No. 41).[37] Considering that expectations of A&M Records company must have been bigger than a club play sale of Peniston's singles, "I'm Not Over You" was released in UK only on B-side of the "Hit by Love" release."Hit by Love" was to be the third song taken from the album. As with her previous releases, the song (with additional remixes by David Morales) became Peniston's next US Dance hit in a line of her No. 1s, but while on the top of the chart "Hit by Love" stayed for another week, the single stuck at No. 33 in the UK Top 75,[11] as well as on the bottom positions of the American Hot 100 chart (at No. 90).[10]Along with "Hit by Love" in the charts, A&M issued a rare compilation, Remix Collection, in Japan with nine alternate versions of her songs previously available only on vinyl, which tracked Peniston's music career since the "Keep On Walkin'" release. A similar remix collection, however, consisting of only two singles ("Finally" and "We Got a Love Thang"), was earlier issued in Japan as an EP under the title Finally / We Got a Love Thang: Remix Collection featuring overall eight remixed versions. At the end of the year Peniston was named the No. 1 Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Artist,[37] summarizing all her songs released in 1994 ("I'm Not Over You" #9, "Hit by Love" #24, and I'm in the Mood" #44). While A&M was listed as the sixth best dance label in the Billboard Year-End chart, Peniston was also rated as the 5th Top R&B Singles Female Artist (behind Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, Aaliyah and Mariah Carey).[38]In addition, a remix of "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" was popularized on the original motion picture soundtrack of the Prêt-à-Porter (Ready To Wear) film, and released in the U.S. after a one-year delay, scoring No. 4 in the US Dance charts in March 1995. "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" became Peniston's first song not to enter the Hot 100 chart (No. 101),[10] possibly as the result of appearing as a B-side on her previous release, and sharing its sales with the single "Hit by Love". She is known for several hit singles including "Superwoman" (1988), "Secret Rendezvous" (1989), "The Way You Love Me" (1988), and the US Hot 100 number one single "Romantic" (1991). White's self-titled debut album Karyn White was released in 1988. It was produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface and achieved platinum status in the US. The album contained the Hot 100 hit singles "The Way You Love Me", "Secret Rendezvous", and "Superwoman" as well as the #1 R&B hit "Love Saw It", a duet with Babyface. White was nominated in the Best R&B/Urban Contemporary New Artist category for the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards which was won by Al B. Sure. She was also received nominations for two Grammy Awards. She became the first female artist to have the first three solo releases from their debut album hit #1 on the R&B charts. Her follow-up album was Ritual of Love in 1991. It had songs produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and featured the hit single "Romantic", which hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Other singles from the album include "The Way I Feel About You" (U.S. #12), "Walkin' the Dog," and "Do Unto Me" (the last two did not chart). The photographer and director Matthew Rolston directed the video for the hit single "Romantic". Michael Walls, who was credited as stylist on Ritual of Love, worked with White on the look for the Ritual of Love album sleeve, and three of the music videos released for the album. Walls had the idea for the Chanel inspired pearls and black dress used on the album cover, the french maid look and multiple wardrobe changes for video of "The Way I Feel About You", and the "Walkin' the Dog" video, which was based on a scene from the film Sweet Charity. Her next album was Make Him Do Right in 1994. The album did not sell well, although she did chart with the singles "Hungah" and the Babyface-penned "Can I Stay With You", which became her final U.S. R&B Top 10 hit in early 1995. "I'd Rather Be Alone", her last chart single to date, peaked at #50 on the same chart later that year.White left Warner Bros. Records in 1999, and dropped out of the music public eye for many years to start a family. In 2006, she recorded a new album, titled Sista Sista; which was slated for release in 2006, but was shelved. FFXIV Has It’s MMO Claws In Us In this episode: Final Fantasy is one of our favorite series. We play them and replay them, and recently, FFXIV grabbed both of us and sank it's grubby little MMO claws right into us. While neither of us tend to be big MMOers these days, FFXIV has so much going for it that we really can't resist it. FFXIV is in full swing for both of us in the middle of the summer gaming slump.  We’ve been playing at pretty much the exclusion to all else for the past few weeks.  Hear us geek out over an MMO for the first time in a long time! We talk about what makes this MMO special (aside from it being Final Fantasy), what it does right in terms of modernizing the genre, and the kinds of things that keep us coming back. The mechanics feel different and polished in a way that other MMOs just feel spammy. We talk about the characters that draw us in, how it's more of a Final Fantasy game first than an MMO, and how despite neither of us having played the 1.0 version, that we feel the game has a history and story that's rich and we're a part of. We discuss different classes like Red Mage and Bard and how the length of time we've played and when we started has influenced how we feel about the game. Beej plays for the social aspect, while Void plays for the story, but they can meet in the middle and see the value in how it all ties together and makes a fantastic game that everyone can enjoy. Next week, we are going to dig in on the expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood, so if you have any questions or comments, please email, tweet, or send them to us on the subreddit! We want to talk about what you want to hear about! Weekly Geekery Beej got back to running, got hooked on mobile Final Fantasy games (FFV and VI), and made some bad trampoline decisions. Void watched a bunch of different things, rewatched some other movies and TV, and determined the best of the bunch was Arrival. "Please Please Me" is the second single released by The Beatles in the United Kingdom, and the first to be issued in the United States. Both its recording history, and its release record, are complex and often confounded. We'll shed some BDJ light on it here..... RECORDING HISTORY: Lennon first conceived "Please Please Me" as a bluesy, slow tempo song. Lennon recalled: "I remember the day I wrote it, I heard Roy Orbison doing "Only the Lonely", or something." When George Martin first heard it (as per Anthology documentation, usually assumed to be at the "Love Me Do" re-make session on 11 September) he found that - in his opinion - it "badly needed pepping up" and he asked The Beatles to consider making major changes to it, including increasing its tempo. The tradional story has it that PPM was brought back into the studio on 26 November 1962, when its arrangement had been radically altered, and it took 18 takes to record what George Martin immediately predicted would be their first major hit. Unfortunatley, I think that this story line is not supported by the facts: On Anthology I, a PPM version appears that had been thought to be lost: an early version, dated September 11. Now, we can all listen to this September 11 version, and confirm that it is very much like the final version of November. It is as fast as the released version, it just lacks the Lennon mouth organ intro and backing vocals. Obviously, it does not make sense that George Martin would have asked for an even faster version than the September 11 track (or why he would call the November version a 'hit' and the very similar September 11 version a 'miss) ! So what really happened ? Here's a litte fact finding: the Beatles actually played Please Please Me to George Martin on September 4 th ( so a week earlier) but - being a 'demo' - it was probably not recorded. This is confirmed in a Ringo Starr interview: "On my first visit in September we just ran through some tracks for George Martin. We even did Please Please Me. I remember that, because while we were recording it I was playing the bass drum with a maraca in one hand and a tambourine in the other." This must have been the slow - Roy Orbison - version. A week later (Sept 11), the Beatles came back for a second attempt to record Love Me Do (with Andy White on drums); they also played and recorded Please Please Me (now in the fast version), in an attempt to dissuade George Martin from releasing How Do You Do It. This is the Anthology version, which probably has Andy White on drums (does he receive rolyalties for the Anthology release ??). PPM needed only minor polisihing up for the November recording of the PPM album (with Ringo on drums). REMIXING HISTORY PPM was mixed in mono for the single and the mono LP. A new mix was made for the stereo LP, which differs only in the vocals (e.g. the fumbling of the lyrics in the final verse). It is usually believed that no stereo version of the single mix exists, but there is one in the BDJ vaults....... As usual, Capitol added reverb to the US release, but otherwise the version is the same as the UK version. US RELEASE HISTORY The single was initially released in the US by Vee-Jay Records, with "Ask Me Why" on the B-side; it failed to make much impact in the US, but when re-released by Capitol there on 3 January 1964 (this time with "From Me to You" on the B-side) it reached number three in the US Hot 100. THE BDJ Remix This remix is in true stereo; the PPM LP version is in the well-known 'vocals left- instruments right' stereo mode, which makes for awkward listening. Both the Remaster's LP stereo version and the stereo version of the single were used to create this new remix. This remix showcases the progress The Beatles had made as recording artists in a few weeks; just listen to Ringo's (quite complex) drum patterns, and Pauls' 'walking bass' in the middle eight. George's intro on guitar is obliterated by Lennons' mouth organ, and we don't hear much of George's guitar at all; according to the sound engineer, he started out by playing the intro riff all through the song, until someone told him to 'shut-up'. Fortunately, we can now hear him in the backing vocals. Enjoy the Remix !
