In this episode, I spoke with Los Angeles-based architect Barbara Bestor, FAIA. In our conversation, we talk about exhibition design, architectural photography, cultural contribution, and much more.Barbara is the Principal and founder of Bestor Architecture, which was established in 1995, currently has a staff of 30 people, and is recognized for consistently pursuing experimental architecture that engages the city through design, art, and urbanism. Barbara explores the architectural form through experiments in spatial arrangements, graphics, and color. Her varied and progressive body of work connects with people on many levels, often outside the boundaries traditionally delineated for architecture.Recent projects by Barbara include Ashes & Diamonds Winery in Napa, multiple offices for Snap in Los Angeles, and the Scandinavian Design and the United States exhibit at LACMA. Barbara is also the author of Bohemian Modern, Living in Silver Lake (Harper Collins, 2006), a book dedicated to the suppressed narrative of informal and eccentric modernism found in Silver Lake's rich domestic architectural history. Join Karaleigh in a lovely discussion with Erika Bestor, musician and singer who has Spina Bifida and is the daughter of renowned composer Kurt Bestor. Favorite takeaways: 1. Theatre: No matter how you sound, no matter how you move, you belong. 2. Take a deep breath. Who knows what miracles lie on the other side. 3. Life is a marathon, but so many of us are sprinting. 4. You're fine. And what you're doing is great. And you're enough. You have gifts and things people haven't seen yet and you just need to keep proving those haters wrong and just keep showing who you are. 5. Keep doing all the good things and you'll get there. 6. It feels illogical to continue to hope for all the things that are in your heart, and yet that's what we are expected to do. And on the other side of that is so much beauty and joy- when you just turn it all over to God. 7. There is so much power in letting go and not holding on so tightly and not only trusting God, but trusting yourself. There is power inside of you. 8. Most people would be blown away by how powerful we are. We are powerful beyond belief- the problem is we don't believe it. 9. There's beauty in everything. Just find it. Today we are thrilled to be joined by Amanda Bestor-Siegal to discuss her debut novel, The Caretakers, which is an emotionally riveting novel set in a wealthy Parisian suburb told from the point of view of six women, and centered around a group of au pairs, one of whom is arrested after a sudden and suspicious tragedy strikes her host family. The Caretakers is a dramatic exploration of identity, class, and caregiving. We chat with Amanda about how the seed for this story came from her experience as an au pair in Paris, the development of these six complicated women, the idea of mothering and caretaking in all its forms, infidelity as a means of escape, and her serendipitous  path from MFA student to publication.

This week, I have a real scoop. My guest is author Amanda Bestor-Siegal, and her debut novel “The Caretakers” has already been named one of 2022's Most Anticipated Crime Fictions by Crime Reads. ”The Caretakers” is a deeply compelling and psychological read, told from the perspective of three French women and three American au pairs living just outside of Paris. It begins with a tragedy : the unexpected death of a small boy. The story that follows is as much about solving that mystery as it is about what makes a family, a home, a marriage, how we're defined by others and how we define ourselves.Amanda shares with us how her worst fear sparked the narrative, her inspiration from her time as an au pair, how she crafted such strong, individual characters, and so much more. Then, she treats us to a reading from “The Caretakers.” @amandabestorsiegalamandabestorsiegal.comFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. There was a time in my life when I COULDN'T get health insurance (because I had two children with Spina Bifida). I made too much money to get Medicaid or other help while not making enough to pay for expensive medical specialists out of pocket. No insurance companies would cover my family due to the cost of the kids' care. Talk about medical care "no man's land!" I have LONG been a fan of taking the profit margin out of health care. R & D is one thing, but the profane world that health insurance and hospital monopolies have created need to be curtailed. A version of a one-payer system is a good place to start. This would cover all Americans for basic health care. Of course, like in Canada and the UK, one can always pay for luxury care or nicer hospital digs, but EVERY American should have the constitutional promise of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Sounds like good health to me! Bio: Kurt Bestor, an Emmy-Award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer, is known for the incredible range of musical genres in which he excels. For this week's podcast, Paul and Amelia spoke with architect Barbara Bestor, of Bestor Architecture, about growing her firm and Los Angeles' design influence, prompted by one of her recently acquired projects, a renovation of Lautner's Silvertop house. Next up, something's rotten in the state of New Jersey: Donna and Ken join in to discuss the local-beefs surrounding the new Michael Graves School of Architecture, whose prioritization of hand-drawing is inciting criticism from the neighboring New Jersey Institute of Technology. We also consider Julia Ingalls' Material Witness series, and how cinematography and set design can drive narrative (and architectural) themes. To conclude, we briefly touch on the recently revealed renderings of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts in Chicago, designed by MAD Architects.

Invisible Civil Society: The Effects of 1960s New Left Protests on Contemporary Japan

Major research on Japanese civil society characterizes it as chronically weak and penetrated by the state, based on national level measures and comparisons with the contemporary United States. However a vast array of civil society organizations cannot be captured with this approach and remains invisible. Many of these organizations trace their roots to the social movements of the 1960s. I contend that civic participation in these conflicts shaped an alternative civil society in Japan, with characteristic organizational features and institutional practices that persist today. They are quite visible if you know where to look and can recognize their signatures.Dr. Patricia G. Steinhoff is professor of Sociology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Currently she is a visiting professor at the Institute for Social Science, University of TokyoHer research focuses on social movements and Japan. Recent publications include: Bestor, Theodore, Patricia G.
