Much has been reported and discussed about the hotly debated issue of immigration enforcement, yet a question is still to be explored: What is the impact of the immigration enforcement on schools and our educational system? In Schools Under Siege: The Impact of Immigration Enforcement on Educational Equity (Harvard Education Press, 2021), Patricia Gándara and Jongyeon Ee addressed this question using rich and comprehensive data from their survey and interview studies. More than 6 million school aged children and youths live in a household in which at least one of their close family members is undocumented. Schools Under Siege sheds light on what the immigration enforcement by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) means to these children. The book also explores the multi-faceted consequences, both direct and indirect, for their classmates, educators, schools, and communities. Schools Under Siege found that fear, stress, and trauma invoked by the threat of ICE detention and deportation contribute to increased absenteeism, decreased student achievement, and parent disengagement. Bullying becomes more widespread, and a multitude of other effects impact school climate and student health and well-being. Amplifying the burden, these effects are experienced disproportionately in poorly funded districts and Title I schools and are felt more acutely among vulnerable populations such as immigrant students, English language learners, and Latinx students. In this episode, you will hear their findings, with vivid examples, about the challenges that these children encountered living under the fear of being separated from their family members. Many children are American citizens and they faced the challenges of absenteeism, trauma, bully, among other things. Patricia and Jongyeon also discussed various innovative ways that educators come up with to support these students, including the idea of sanctuary schooling. They offer informative suggestions to educators and policy makers and engage the public in understanding the profound challenges schools and educators are facing today in supporting disadvanted and minoritized studenets. Patricia Gándara is research professor and codirector of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA. She is also director of education for the University of California–Mexico Initiative. Jongyeon Ee is an assistant professor at the School of Education, Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Pengfei Zhao is a critical researcher and qualitative research methodologist based at the University of Florida. She is currently working on a book manuscript studying the coming of age experience of rural Chinese youth during and right after the Cultural Revolution. Learn more about your ad choices. Dr. Patricia Gándara and Dr. Jongyeon Ee are the authors and editors of Schools Under Siege: Immigration Enforcement and Educational Equity. They join host Mike Palmer in a conversation about the challenges immigrant children and their families face in light of the troubling history of immigration enforcement in the United States. Dr. Gandara is the Co-Director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA where Dr. Ee did her post-doctoral studies. In addition to raising awareness to drive towards empathy and better outcomes, we explore how to support teachers and other school leaders who are under-resourced and generally unsupported when it comes to engaging with immigrant children and families under threat of deportation and policing by ICE.
This week we’re joined by Talia Stroud, Director of the Center for Media Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin, and Eli Pariser, formerly of Upworthy and MoveOn and author of The Filter Bubble, to talk about their latest project, Civic Signals/New Public. After several rounds of conversation on “what’s wrong with social media and how can we fix it?” Talia and Eli started Civic Signals to try to fill the gap between necessary critiques of our current online spaces and creating digital environments that we want to inhabit. By looking across disciplines and off-line equivalents to our online spaces, they are working to create a community to collectively build an evolving design framework for online public spaces. Eli and Talia take us through their approach, methods, and findings so far – and how they’ve doubled down on this work in the pandemic. Finally, we go on a deep dive of the first of the four essential “building blocks” they’ve found that make digital spaces work for people across multiple lived experiences: Welcome.A full transcript of this episode will be available on the episode page soon. Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Wile. We finally begin our podcast by addressing a major situation on the island and in Spain and the world at the moment. Talking about the current legal requirements that mean everyone has to wear a mask in public in Mallorca. You can contact us on majorcamallorcapodcast@gmail.com or join the https://www.facebook.com/groups/MajorcaMallorca/ to join in the fun. We make this podcast in conjunction with the Majorca Daily Bulletin, you can see their website https://www.majorcadailybulletin.comTaken from the Majorca Daily Bulletin website: the current law on face masksThe Government has changed its mind on the rules for face masks, yet again, according to Health Minister, Patricia Gómez.CompulsoryEveryone over the age of 6 must wear a mask at all times on public roads, in open and enclosed spaces for public use and in public service areas.Masks are compulsory at work, in both public and private firms, if social distancing of 1.5 metres cannot be guaranteed or when there is a possibility of contact with people who don't live in the same home and social distancing is impossible. At the entrances and exits to cultural and sports shows, the use of a mask is obligatory, except when eating or drinking.Weddings are restricted to 250 people outdoors and 150 indoors and rehearsals and performances of choirs and bands are restricted to 30 people and everyone must wear a mask except for those playing wind instruments.Passengers in a private car must wear masks unless they are all living at the same address and it is compulsory for Taxi Drivers and all passengers to wear a mask. Not CompulsoryIt is not necessary to wear a face mask at the beach, at swimming pools, when playing sports or wind instruments or in the countryside and a mask will only be necessary on promenades next to the sea if there are a lot of people."During walks next to the coast and in ventilated places, if you can keep the required social distance of 1.5 metres a mask is not necessary, but if promenades are very crowded it will be necessary to wear a mask,” said Minister Gómez. It is not necessary to wear a face mask whilst eating or drinking at a restaurant or bar. Those under 16 years of age don't have to wear a mask when they're participating in regular activities with a stable group of children, such as at summer schools or camps.ExceptionsThose with any type of respiratory illness or difficulty which may be aggravated by the use of a face mask, those who do not have autonomy to remove the mask, due to disability or dependency and those with behavioural problems which make wearing a mask unfeasible are exempt from the ruling.“A face mask is not required in cases of force majeure or a situation of need, or when due to the very nature of the activities of the use of the mask is incompatible," said Minister Gómez, who defended the tightening of the rules for face masks.“With the recovery of Social, Tourist and Economic activity combined and the increase in Covid-19 cases at National and International level face masks are another measure of prevention and security and have proven to be very effective in slowing down the spread of the virus,” she said. Minister Gómez also referred to a study in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and Slovakia where the use of mandatory masks resulted in mortality rates one hundred times lower than expected. She also pointed out that in Lombardy, in Ital

Moderation: Erika Altenburg

Major research on Japanese civil society characterizes it as chronically weak and penetrated by the state, based on national level measures and comparisons with the contemporary United States. However a vast array of civil society organizations cannot be captured with this approach and remains invisible. Many of these organizations trace their roots to the social movements of the 1960s. I contend that civic participation in these conflicts shaped an alternative civil society in Japan, with characteristic organizational features and institutional practices that persist today. They are quite visible if you know where to look and can recognize their signatures.Dr. Patricia G. Steinhoff is professor of Sociology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Currently she is a visiting professor at the Institute for Social Science, University of TokyoHer research focuses on social movements and Japan.
