The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of ketone monoester ingestion on postexercise erythropoietin (EPO) concentrations. Why Is EPO Important? EPO is required for red blood cell production. EPO is the primary regulator for production of red blood cells that transport oxygen in the circulation from the lungs to the tissues. Athletes ingested equivalent to 1/2 to 3/4 a bottle 1h and 2h post-exercise with a carb/protein mix, and blood samples were taken 7 times over 4 hours. In conclusion, ketone monoester ingestion increases postexercise erythropoietin concentrations, revealing a new avenue for orally ingestible ketone monoesters to potentially alter hemoglobin mass. Brian McMahon comes from Dundalk in County Louth, just north of Dublin. 13 years ago, not so long after Brian's father passed away, he digitalised a family photograph from the 1960's, and to his delight was amazed by the quality of the newly digitalised image but also the nostalgia that he had managed to encapsulate online. Since then, Brian has digitalised over 3000 images, adverts and articles of Dublin and Ireland, posting them on his blog; Brand New Retro or in his monthly column in Totally Dublin magazine. In this episode of the Science & Chill podcast, I interview Dr. Kieran Clarke and Brian McMahon of T delta S, a company who sells deltaG ketones, an exogenous ketone ester. Dr. Kieran Clarke is a legend in the ketone world. Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Kieran Clarke studied for her undergraduate BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences at Flinders University. She obtained her PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Queensland before taking a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University Medical School Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory between 1985 and 1989. She has over 25 years research experience in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy to non-invasively measure human cardiac, brain and skeletal muscle function and energy metabolism. We are also joined in this episode by Brian McMahon. Brian is the Chief of Staff at T delta S, and it was awesome to have him on the interview to give his perspective on the market for exogenous ketone ester, what makes T delta S special among the many available ketone products, and how he got into this area of health and performance. Even if you aren't fully up to speed on the biochemistry of ketones, I think you will enjoy this episode. Dr. Clarke and Brian do a fantastic job of describing the science of ketosis and their product, and even though I had some prior knowledge in this area, I came away from this interview with much more knowledge and interest in ketone esters than I previously had. This week Fionn, Hugh and Laurence hop on board a carousel of nostalgia. First up, Mad Men: with just a few episodes left to come, the hit AMC show has entered the 70s, and with it its character's clothes. There's a lot more to these costumes than meets the eye, as Tom Fitzgerald, who has analysed every show's fashion on his blog tomandlorenzo.com, explains. But can the costumes reveal Don's ultimate fate? In part 2 it's time to look at vintage Irish culture, and helping with that is Brian McMahon, whose Brand New Retro blog catalogues the styles, magazines, advertisements and agony aunt columns of Ireland in days gone by. Plus, Hugh is questioning the fiscal responsibility of George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life, Laurence is surprised by Ghostpoet's full band, and Fionn flags the end of FX show Justified.
