Sam and Adrian open episode 59 with three news stories — a bolting controversy resolved (kind of?) on Snake Dike, the public comment window on the PARC Act's draft management plans, and freeride skiing's addition to the 2030 Olympics — before shifting into a full rundown of the Pakistan 8,000-meter season, now underway.Following spring season in the Himalaya, climbers and skiers move on to the Karakoram range, with the season often starting in June and peaking in July before temps warm too much into August. Why Pakistan Climbs in Summer Nepal and Tibet's Himalayan season runs spring and fall because their more southern latitude brings a powerful summer monsoon that makes climbing impossible — and increasingly, makes even the shoulder seasons too warm for features like the Khumbu Icefall to hold together. Pakistan's Karakoram sits further north and west, giving it a weather pattern closer to Europe or North America, with a summer window instead. That window is compressing too: teams are now pushing to finish by mid-July rather than mid-August as glaciers destabilize earlier each year.Nanga Parbat: A Season Already Winding Down — Except One Face Of Pakistan's five 8,000-meter peaks, Nanga Parbat climbs earliest, partly because it sits further south and is technically part of the Himalayan range rather than the Karakoram. The normal Diamir Face route is already falling out of condition. Meanwhile, a team is still attempting a new route on the Rupal Face — the mountain's massive alpine wall, home to some of the biggest lines in the world — in a pure alpine style (no camps, no fixed ropes, no pre-carrying gear).A Quieter Pakistan Season: War and Infrastructure This year's season is noticeably smaller. Sam and Adrian point to the ongoing conflict along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, which escalated sharply in February and forced expedition companies — including Alpenglow, along with Furtenbach Adventures and Madison Mountaineering — to sit the season out on safety and logistics grounds, while some Nepali operators chose to run smaller trips anyway. Beyond the war, Adrian frames Pakistan as roughly 20 years behind Nepal on tourism infrastructure: more avalanche exposure on routes like Broad Peak, and far less-developed logistics, hygiene, and food quality at base camp. Alpinista i himalaista może pochwalić się takimi szczytami, jak: Lhotse, Gasherbrum II, Nanga Parbat, Dhaulagiri, Szczyt Lenina i Baruntse. Dans une semaine on va retrouver l'aventurier Grégoire Heymans. L'été dernier il a franchi la ligne d'arrivée de la Swisspeaks 700 après 11 jours d'aventure. Avec ses 700 km et 48 000 m de dénivelé positif à travers les sentiers techniques du Valais, cette course est souvent considérée comme l'un des trails les plus longs et difficiles au monde. Cette année, une centaine de coureurs étaient au départ, et seuls 55 ont atteint l'arrivée. Grégoire est quant à lui devenu le premier européen de moins de 30 ans à aller jusqu'au bout de la Swisspeaks 700.Au-delà de la performance physique, la Swisspeaks 700 est une plongée dans l'inconnu. Tráva je horolezec, který má na kontě sedm úspěšných výstupů na osmitisícovky. Tu zatím poslední Broad Peak ale vylezl tak, že si na poslední úsek vzal kyslíkový přístroj. Zajímalo mne, proč to udělal, když doposud všechno lezl striktně bez kyslíku. A co zjistil? V čem je lezení s kyslíkem a bez odlišné, nejen výkonnostně ale i technicky? Today, Billi Bierling is a renowned mountaineer. However, it wasn't always like that; in fact when she was growing up she almost felt slightly oppressed by the snowy peaks surrounding her hometown in Germany.   So what changed? Simple. A trip to Nepal in 1998, where she fell in love with the mountains and started high-altitude climbing. Since then, she has scaled six of the 14 8,000m-peaks, namely Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Manaslu (fore summit) and Broad Peak – the latter three she summited without the help of supplemental oxygen. In 2004, Billi started assisting the late Elizabeth Hawley with her work documenting expeditions to the Nepal Himalayas. Together with a team, Billi continues to interview expedition leaders for Liz Hawley's archive, which is now called 'The Himalayan Database'.   When she is not gallivanting around the high Himalayas or chasing expeditions in Kathmandu, Billi works for Swiss Humanitarian Aid as a communications expert, writes mountaineering articles for German and English-speaking magazines, translates or writes books and leads mountain treks and expeditions in Nepal and around the world. Climbing the tallest mountains in the world, overcoming a colleague's death, and fighting forward with climbing legend Tamara Lunger. Tamara Lunger Is a dreamer in love with the mountains“   Bio Tamara Lunger   “Every moment spent in the mountains makes me more aware of who I am and more thankful to life.” Since she was a child, she has practiced a lot of different sports, even athletics - she was twice vice Italian national champion -, but her true passion for the mountains remained untouched! This is why, in 2002, she started with ski mountaineering racing. She became a member of the Italian National Team and won many important races: twice Italian National Champion in 2006 and 2008, vice champion in 2007, she won the Pierra Menta in 2007 and 2008 and achieved the World Champion title on the long distance in 2008. Born in Bozen in 1986, she is the daughter of a famous Italian ski mountaineer, and has lived all her life in the mountains. This is probably why it was inevitable that the mountains went onto have such a strong influence in her life, becoming her passion. In 2014 she reached the summit of K2 becoming the second Italian woman to do so.   After the ski mountaineering experience she was looking for new, extreme challenges in the high mountains. Since she was 14 years old, she dreamt of climbing an 8000m peak and through the years she always had had a certain idea of how she would have felt being there. And then in 2009, her first big mountaineering experience in Nepal, she could say that her expectations were satisfied.  2013 - 2020 - 2021 - 2021 - „The great crossing“ - ski mountaineering traverse in Pakistan with the summit of 2 unclimbed & nameless peaks (6345 m & 6489 m) „Tamara Tour Italia“ - A multi sport road trip (mountaineering, climbing, running, biking, paragliding, kayaking). I traveled all over Italy with the camper van, climbing the highest peak of every region. „Climbing for a reason“ - social project in northern Pakistan, Shigar Valley. We reached to climb muslim girls from 5 to 17 years. Furthermore we built an artificial climbing wall and set up a climbing spot with 19 routes on the rocks of Shigar Fort. „Tamara Tour Spain“ - A multi sport road trip (mountaineering, climbing, running, biking, paragliding, kayaking). I traveled all over Spain with the camper van, climbing the 18 highest and most important 3000m peaks of Spain. “In women sports there are still many opportunities for me because there are just a few women in the world who dare facing up the awkward demands of an expedition to the highest peaks of the world. Though, it's not about the competition or measuring with other athletes, it is all about proving myself – to myself! What will I be able to achieve? How difficult can things become? Which levels of mental and physical demands will I be able to cope with?”    

K2 had a record year this 2022 summer. Most of the summits were by Sherpas or Pakistani climbers helping their paying clients, but a handful were the rare type: no supplemental oxygen, no Sherpa support, and no commercial team. Danish climber Andreas Ritzau Frydensberg with American Eric Gilbertson summited Broad Peak on July 18th and K2 on July 28th. On his website, Country Highpoints, Eric describes their Broad Peak, and K2 climbs in detail. They climbed unsupported, using Pakastani Alpine Adventure Guides for base camp services. So they climbed with no on-mountain support - no Sherpas to set up tents, cook food, or break trail. They also didn't use supplemental oxygen. Before getting to their story, I admit that 2022 caused me to lose some hope in the sport I admire. Too many inexperienced climbers, too much talk of records, most important only to the individual seeking it, and teams with too many clients supported but too many Sherpas. It just felt out of control. I'm thankful we had a relatively small number of deaths, but as I learn more, I see many rescues and near misses, so this was a season of luck. In looking at what Eric and Andreas did, they gave me hope. I am excited to see younger climbers demonstrate creativity, excellent judgment, and impressive results, all in good style. It gave me hope for our sport, and I'm proud of them and several others who climbed similarly. Now, onto the interview. And the summits keep going with many firsts, records, and races to the top thanks to this summer's, and for that fact, this spring's, unusually stable weather across the Himalayas. It's not uncommon for climbers to have three, four, or even five, or more 8000er summits this year. Let's run a few down with more to come before it's all over. Big Picture The season is winding down. I think the action is over on Nanga Parbat. The snow conditions were getting too dangerous a couple of weeks ago, and several highly skilled and experienced climbers abandoned their efforts. On Gasherbrum II, there are a few climbers, mostly the record seekers, still to make attempts, the same for Gasherbrum I. Several K2 climbers are moving to Broad Peak to attempt their double. And on K2, you never know for sure, but I think it will be quiet until winter when someone will try. Well over 90% of the K2 summits occur in July. Still, some seep into mid-August, and there have been a couple in October, but that was decades ago when the weather was much different. Note, expect the same for Everest – a winter, no O's, perhaps with a “solo” label even though attached to a commercial team for logistics. Life has become interesting, and I'm not sure in a good way. This year, 2022, the weather has been good overall. Occasionally, heavy snow storms have offered challenges to teams, but on the whole, most people will not claim they didn't summit because of bad weather. As of July 30, I estimate 190 K2 summits and three deaths or 1.6%. I have reached out to Pakistani Officials for an official count. Climb On! Alan Memories are Everything

We sometimes hear about a climber who has to make a tough decision as we follow mountaineering each season. Usually, it involves weather moving in that might jeopardize the team's safety or rescuing a teammate. Well, this spring, my long-time friend, Wilco van Rooijen, 55, faced a difficult decision, but it involved staying true to his style. The Dutch mountaineer cheated death in 2008 on K2, but we both lost a dear friend, Ger McDonnell, that year. Wilco, who always climbs without supplemental oxygen or Sherpa support, had summited K2, Everest, plus many technical climbs in the Alps. He had a sold attempt in 2018 on Kanchenjunga, the 3rd highest mountain at 8,586 m (28,169 ft), with his best friend and climbing partner, Cas van de Gevel. This 2022 spring, they returned to Kanch for another try in their style. They had perfect weather day after day and had acclimatized on Meru Peak before arriving at Kanch's base camp. They made one attempt but were going too slow behind a large group, and it was getting late in the day, so they returned to base camp. It was then that their expedition began to experience problems. The operator they had paid to provide base camp logistics told them they only had three days left as they were going. Cas developed health problems. Soon Wilco found himself high on Kanch with a climber he didn't know and a very young and inexperienced Sherpa. Wilco faced a decision that would test his character and test his commitment to the style head sworn to honor.
