Climbing the tallest mountains in the world, overcoming a colleague's death, and fighting forward with climbing legend Tamara Lunger. Tamara Lunger Is a dreamer in love with the mountains“   Bio Tamara Lunger   “Every moment spent in the mountains makes me more aware of who I am and more thankful to life.” Since she was a child, she has practiced a lot of different sports, even athletics - she was twice vice Italian national champion -, but her true passion for the mountains remained untouched! This is why, in 2002, she started with ski mountaineering racing. She became a member of the Italian National Team and won many important races: twice Italian National Champion in 2006 and 2008, vice champion in 2007, she won the Pierra Menta in 2007 and 2008 and achieved the World Champion title on the long distance in 2008. Born in Bozen in 1986, she is the daughter of a famous Italian ski mountaineer, and has lived all her life in the mountains. This is probably why it was inevitable that the mountains went onto have such a strong influence in her life, becoming her passion. In 2014 she reached the summit of K2 becoming the second Italian woman to do so.   After the ski mountaineering experience she was looking for new, extreme challenges in the high mountains. Since she was 14 years old, she dreamt of climbing an 8000m peak and through the years she always had had a certain idea of how she would have felt being there. And then in 2009, her first big mountaineering experience in Nepal, she could say that her expectations were satisfied. Scott Lunger was the "good cop" on the Freedom High School varsity softball coaching staff. Players loved the good-natured humor that the infield coach often used to teach and motivate them. But Lunger was also a cop in real life, a 15-year sergeant for the Hayward Police Department. And on July 22, 2016, he was shot and killed during a traffic stop at 3:15 in the morning. A little more than one week later, the Freedom school year began. Six months later, as many as a dozen girls showed up to softball tryouts still very much in mourning. Three months after that, they'd be placing a game ball from their North Coast Section Division I championship victory next to Lunger's headstone. To mark the fifth anniversary of that inspiring season, we gathered two players and two coaches from that team to share memories. Head coach Brook Russo, assistant coach Scott Adams, pitcher Vanessa Strong and catcher Faith Derby each detailed what went into a season that was dedicated to a fallen friend and hero — and became known as the "Business Trip."

Joey Lunger has been killing it for years now and his trick selection and spot choices have always been impressive. Auf den ersten Blick wirkt Tamara Lunger etwas verschlossen, als wir uns auf dem Parkplatz eines Supermarkts in Kufstein zum ersten Mal begegnen. Mit einer Tasse Kasse sitzen wir in der Sonne und die anfängliche Zurückhaltung verfliegt nach wenigen Minuten. Sie beginnt über die Menschheit, die Gesellschaft zu sinnieren, in der sie sich oft unwohl fühlt. Schnell wird klar: Diese Frau ist anders. Angepasst zu sein und zu leben war noch nie ihr Ding. Ein traumatisches Erlebnis als 2-Jährige verändert sie so sehr, dass sie fortan dem inneren Antrieb folgt, für sich und ihre Ziele zu kämpfen. Mit 14 beschließt sie, einmal einen 8000er zu besteigen. Sie wird zunächst Weltmeisterin im Skibergsteigen und mit gerade einmal 23 Jahren gelingt ihr als jüngste Frau der Aufstieg zum Gipfel des Lhotse auf 8.516 m. Jahre harten Trainings machen sich bezahlt, doch der Preis ist hoch, ständige Schmerzen werden ihre Begleiter. Ihre Erfolgsserie geht weiter. Unbeirrt kämpft sie, nicht zuletzt auch um die Anerkennung ihres Vaters. Neben ihren Expeditionen auf die höchsten und schwierigsten Gipfel der Erde läuft sie auch beim Transalpine Run mit. Sie weiß: Erst wenn es richtig schwierig wird, ist es interessant. Auch mehrere Situationen, bei denen sie nur knapp dem Tod entging, halten sie nicht zurück, die Ruhe und Freiheit in den Bergen zu suchen. Tief verwurzelt ist auch der Glaube an Gott, regelmäßige Rituale helfen ihr, in entscheidenden Momenten auf ihre Intuition zu vertrauen, denn Angst ist ihr unbekannt. Dennoch oder gerade deswegen unterbricht sie mit Anfang 30 ihre Sehnsucht, ihr Streben nach dem nächsten Gipfelglück und begibt sich auf eine Reise der Selbstheilung. Gestärkt und motiviert trekkt sie schmerzfrei 300 km durch die Mongolei, ein Test für die nächste Expedition nach Pakistan zum Gasherbrum I und II. Wieder will sie wissen, wie weit sie gehen kann. Mit einem Rucksack voller Erkenntnisse, neuer Fragen und Visionen für ihr Leben kehrt sie nach einer überraschenden Wende während der Expedition in ihr Heimatdorf Gummer in Südtirol zurück. Ein Gespräch über wahre Berufung, Hingabe und die Suche nach dem Glück, wie man seinem Zweck der Existenz ein Stück näher kommen kann und lernt, die eigene Verletzlichkeit als als Frau zu zeigen und mit sich ins Reine zu kommen. Tamara Lunger is a high-altitude ski mountaineer. A big Thank You to The North Face for making it possible for us to record this episode with Tamara. Tamara was born in Bolzano, northern Italy, as the daughter of ski mountaineer, Hansjörg Lunger, she started ski mountaineering in 2002. Since 2009, Tamara has been a high-altitude climber meaning she makes her ascents without oxygen. On 23 May 2010, Lunger became the youngest ever female climber (aged 23 years, 11 months, and 17 days), to have reached the main summit of Lhotse. By the age of 30 she had climbed two of the world's four highest mountains (K2 and Lhotse) this was despite injuries and afflictions that meant every step taken was in pain. In this incredible episode Tamara tells us what it's like to traverse some of the world's most punishing summits, all whilst under considerable physical pain and mental stress. Within this, Tamara generously describes: - Coming face-to-face with death and the life-changing experience that resulted - How she prepares mentally about the fact she may potentially not return from a trip - How she's helped exhume dead bodies and body parts in order to take them back down a mountain - How she overcame her ego and turned around just 70m from the top of a mountain summit - How she separates the fear of doing something from its end experience (if she knows it will be beneficial) After some action-packed years of adventure, Tamara is currently in a period of reflection, meditation, and physical recovery which she also speaks about later on in the episode. Tamara is a friend and a mentor of mine. She is a professional alpinist and in a time where so many people label themselves as an 'athlete' on social media she certainly fits that title. Tamara cuts through all of the dros and works incredibly hard in the outdoors chasing her dreams everyday. Previously she has been a client of mine when we worked together for one of her expeditions a couple of years ago nutritional and that is how we met originally. We caught up and covered he expedition to Siberia, her next challenge ski touring 200Km with 85,000 vertical metres of climbing.
