Birds and oil spills are the topic of today_s story. We do a duck craft during the Arts-n-Crafts section. During Curriculum Corner, we discussed the Famous Men of Greece, a good historical topic. Then, we begin our interview with R. Christian Bohlen, who wrote a novel about Hannah. She fears the world will learn of her dark truth. Has God forsaken this aspiring missionary? Has God abandoned her to the shadows of the black market? Listen to find out.
Everyone knows beautiful women tend to gravitate towards rich and famous men, and vice versa. But how do they actually meet? How do they actually fall in love?

Great name. Fresh ideas. Yep, enjoy this conversation with biosystems engineering doctoral student Wellington Arthur on long-term nutrient utilization and evaluation of pathogenic bacteria in a pilot-scale wastewater treatment system for hydroponic irrigation — and lettuce.
Hosts Laura and Emily are obsessed with a new movie that's out this week, so we kick things off with a recommendation. And there are two actors, our current It Boys of the moment, Jeremy Allen White from The Bear and Barry Keoghan from Saltburn, who have both been recently accused of leaving their partners and children at the height of their fame. They're not the first A-List actors to be accused of this, but as we look deeper into the facts, it appears there could be more to this story. Classical education is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue through the study of the liberal arts and the Great Books. The liberal arts are the universal linguistic and mathematical skills students need to excel in every area of life. The Great Books are the means by which we pass on the cultural heritage of the Christian West. A mastery of both is the best way to prepare a child for a life of wisdom and virtue, and Memoria Press' beautiful and comprehensive classical Christian curriculum provides the tools for mastering these two essential elements of education. How do we take the tales of antiquity and impart virtue education through our homeschool curriculum? How do we communicate Christian values through sinful characters? This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas talk about the increase in teenage pregnancy rates following 2007's JUNO. In Week 2 of Children of Men aka Children of Famous Men aka Nepotism, we discuss the coming-of-age tale directed by Jason Reitman – son of Ivan Reitman. Starring Elliot Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Alison Janney and J.K. Simmons, the film was built off the back of the success found by the quirky indie comedy Napoleon Dynamite; grounded with very real plot points and taking the genre to new heights. The Academy Awards, to be exact. It made a star out of Elliot Page, pushed Michael Cera even further into stardom, gave screenwriter Diablo Cody a career, and really broke ground with its themes of teenage pregnancy and the debate on abortion vs adoption. Plus, it touched on some pretty twisted gaslighting and grooming story arcs that are only now coming to terms with as a society. 15 Years Later, how does Jason Reitman's second feature hold up, and where does it have him standing up to his father's hit comedy directing career*? This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas get lost in Tokyo and feel sad about being alone. It's time for a new arc – Children of Men aka Children of Famous Men aka Nepotism. Over the next four weeks, we will follow four different directors, who are the children of famous directors – picking out one film from each of their catalogues, to see how they stand against their parents' massive shadows. Do they sink or swim? First up, it's Sofia Coppola – daughter of the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, and we've gone with her 2003 drama LOST IN TRANSLATION, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. How does this indie darling fare nearly 20 years later? Does Sofia Coppola blaze her own trail, or is she lost in the shadows of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now? Or is the whole premise of this stupid arc lost in translation? Tune in to find out... If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It really helps us out! One day, Paul Bates found a book in an alley. It wasn't a magical book, but it was very old – 132 years old, to be exact. It's called The Pictorial Treasury of Famous Men and Famous Deeds: its cover is beautiful, its language is flowery, and its tone is problematic. It's also full of wildly obscure and preposterously inaccurate stories about people and deeds you've probably never heard of. And, it's the basis for this history podcast. Each episode Paul shares a chapter with a guest and together they cut through the rhetoric, fill in the blanks and bring a modern perspective to this relic from the height of the British Empire. If you're famous you must be happy, right? Why do the Greeks care so much about how they are remembered, and what can their insights teach us today?
Man sollte Helden kompostieren. Quellen: • William Manchester – The Last Lion. The episode in which I try to make some final sense of James Agee's LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN. I am pretty sure I am only scratching the surface.
Part three of my review of LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN by James Agee. In this part of the book, Agee continues his report on the material conditions of life for the three sharecropping families. It will get weird again at the end.
In part 2 of LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN by James Agee we get a look at the material conditions of life for our three sharecropper families, with special focus on their homes.
Part one of my review of the frustrating, fascinating, and beautiful work LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN. I still do not know fully what to think of this one. It explores the lives of sharecroppers in the South during the Great Depression, but goes off the rails.

People from an alternate timeline live as refugees in our New York City. It’s full of grief, sadness, frustration, and coincidences. Host Jason Snell.
Famous Men Who Never Lived (Tin House, 2019) is set in two Brooklyns. In one, people ride in trams; in the other, they take subways. In one, the swastika is a symbol of luck; in the other, it signifies hate. In one, science fiction is literature; in the other, it’s considered mere genre. Helen (Hel) Nash, the main character in K Chess’s debut novel, comes from the other Brooklyn—the one with trams and innocuous swastikas. She is a refugee from a nuclear war, one of 156,000 Universally Displaced Persons who escape through an experimental gate from her timeline to ours. Like many refugees, she’s having a hard time adjusting. Not only has she lost friends and family—including her son, who she can never see again—but she faces a new world of unfamiliar laws, customs, and culture. It doesn’t help that most people in our timeline eye UDPs with mistrust. Hel’s and our world diverged around 1910. “It was fun to think about all the things that happened since nineteen hundred,” Chess says in her New Books interview. “For instance, light beer wasn’t invented until the 70s, so that might not exist in the other world. There are many things that could have gone very differently, both in large-scale world history and in small-scale inventions.” Instead of trying to assimilate, Hel becomes obsessed with establishing a museum to preserve her vanished timeline’s art and culture. She is fascinated—and frustrated—by the loss of the thinkers, artists and inventors who accomplished great things in her world but died prematurely in ours. “There was something especially poignant,” Hel thinks, “about knowing exactly what these men and women might have accomplished if only history had proceeded the way it ought to have.” In this episode, Chess discusses, among other things, why she doesn't like her book’s title, New York's resonance as a city of immigrants, human beings' attachment to the past, and how she built an alternate world through small but important details. Rob Wolf is the host of New Books in Science Fiction and the author of The Alternate Universe and The Escape. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Our new friend "Benadictia" isn't sure how to respond to an ex boyfriend who wants to get back touch. Caroline, Gale and Anne discuss their own experiences with moving on from unfavorable past experiences and men's expectations of women in general, but especially in pop culture. They also suggest great 90s movies, punk songs, a Reba McEntire music video that should be required viewing at every Law School and a very necessary Rihanna quote to help "Benadictia" look toward what's ahead of her instead of what's behind. Benadictia's pop culture prescription for talking to an ex: “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” by Stars (song) Caroline “Shitlist” by L7 (song) Anne “Take it Back” by Reba McEntire (music video) Gale “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night” (movie) Caroline “Now And Then” (movie) Anne “Never Been Kissed” (movie) Caroline “10 Things I Hate About You” (movie) Caroline “A Letter To my Younger Self” by Ambar Lucid (song) Gale “I’m So Fine: A List of Famous Men and What I Had On” by Khadijah Queen (book of poetry) Gale “Awe” by Dorothea Lasky (book) The Second Lesson, The Second Appurtenance (poem) Anne “Fates and Furies” by Lauren Groff (novel) Caroline “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (tv show) Caroline “Movin’ On” by Brandy (song) Gale “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman” by Lindy West (book) Anne “Why Does the Sun Shine? The Lomaxes are well-known for the recordings they made of artists who went on to become famous and influential figures in traditional and popular music alike: Lead Belly, Bessie Jones, Woody Guthrie, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters. But there are countless wonderful singers and players in the Lomax collections about whom we know next to nothing or nothing whatsoever, and this episode focuses on some of them, with music from Memphis, Cajun Louisiana, Morocco, Sint Eustatius, Romania, and two songs from the Mississippi Delta (one by way of Detroit).1. Unidentified woman: All Power Is In His Hands. Recorded at the Coahoma County Agricultural High School, Coahoma, Mississippi, July 1942. 2. Cecil Augusta: Crawford's Jump. Memphis, Tennessee, October 1959. [Since this episode was produced, we have discovered "Cecil Augusta" was Lomax's garbling of the name of Augustus Crowford.)3. Sampson Pittman with Calvin Frazier: I Been Down the Circle Before. Detroit, Michigan, November 1938. 4. Unidentified: Strigaturi. Dragus, Romania, August 1964. 5. Alice Gibbs: Jerusalem Cuckoo (I Am A Donkey Driver). St. Eustatius (Statia), 1967.6. Unidentified: Cajun mazurka. Kaplan, Louisiana, 1934. 7. Unidentified Amazigh man: Al-Hamdulillah (Thanks Be to God). Aguelmouss, Ouarzazate, Souss-Massa-Drâa, Morocco. September 1967.

Gay Icon/Writer/Actress/Internet Celebrity Gaby Dunn (Just Between Us, Buzzfeed, Thought Catalog, Fusion, Cosmopolitan) is on the show! Some quotes from the episode: 7:00 “Allison and I have half a million dollars riding on our friendship.” 9:05 “I was kind of a dirt bag before I met Allison.” 27:58 "On being interested in Marc Maron: “His name is Marc, my father’s name is Marc. It’s spelled the same way. He’s a recovering addict. My Dad’s a recovering addict.” 29:50 "You should have sex with famous people. Just don't get emotionally involved." 33:00 “If a famous man turns out to be bad he raped 30 people, if a famous woman turns out to be bad she was rude to you on twitter one time.” 40:40 “It’s never gonna to be perfect. So just do it.” 42:45 “You need to have stuff to show for yourself. You need to be like, this is what I’m doing. This is my thing.” 59:20 "If you look like me, you’re not fat." 1:02:40 "There are a lot of YouTubers that don’t take a stance on anything and I find that very boring. Black Lives Matter shit is going on and they’re tweeting about their cinnamon challenge video. I understand that that’s your brand and your thing is not to be controversial at all, but fuck you." 1:32:25 On non-monogamy: "People don’t extend other people the same complexity they extend themselves. So they’re like, I could love my girlfriend and sleep with someone else, but there’s no way she could do that." 1:48:35 "OK I’ll never work at Buzzfeed again. OK whatever, there are 400 other sites." 2:05:40 On Allison: "She’s a puppet master. She has more control over all of us than we will ever know." Thank you to Gaby for a great conversation.
