BOM Senior Meterologist, Jonathan How, told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "We are seeing rain ease across Brisbane and we've just issued the latest severe weather warning." "Brisbane has now been removed from that, so no longer expecting heavy rainfall across Brisbane." "But we still have that warning current for the Lockyer Valley and for places north of Caboolture, but the good news is that rain is easing across the metro area," Mr How continued. Brian York hasn't wasted a single minute from the day he became aware that his riding days were over. He tried everything known to medical science to overcome a knee injury sustained in a freakish fall at Rosehill in November 2002, but to no avail. The former star jockey joins us on the podcast this week to talk about his very busy and rewarding life after racing. Brian begins  by talking about a five year association with the Waterhouse/Bott stable producing videos of trackwork and jump outs for stable clients. He says border closures during the pandemic brought his business to an end. He talks about the challenge of learning a brand new craft. Brian looks back on his family's emigration from Scotland to New Zealand. He was just ten years of age. The budding champion jockey was elated to gain an apprenticeship with respected Takanini trainer Cliff Fenwick. He recalls the thrilling occasion of his first win in March 1979 on a handy mare trained by his master. Brian looks back on the first of his 35 Gr 1 victories. He talks about successful stints in Singapore and Malaysia before accepting an offer to move permanently to Australia.  Brian clearly recalls the offer made by the late Bruce McLachlan who was looking for the right jockey to join the team at his lavish Caboolture training property. He describes the unique lay out of Thornhill Park. The former champion jockey pays a heartfelt tribute to the man who won 16 Brisbane training premierships. He believes no trainer/jockey partnership has ever been more harmonious. Brian acknowledges the talents of the special horses he rode during his time with the former Mt. Isa policeman. He reflects on six consecutive wins on the brilliant New Zealander Our Maizcay. When connections decided to run Our Maizcay in the Cox Plate with only 48.5 kgs Brian's initial reaction was to relinquish the ride. He decided to give it a crack and turned up at the right weight on the day. His enormous sacrifice was to be all in vain. He looks back on a happy association with the powerhouse sprinter General Nediym.  Brian has fond memories of his very first ride on Filante- a stunning four lengths victory in the 1996 Epsom. He looks back on a very successful association with the Gai Waterhouse stable. Brian pays tribute to the well documented talents of trainer John Size. He regrets never having won a Golden Slipper. Circumstances kept him off three winners of the iconic two year old race. Brian won seven races on champion Might And Power including three memorable Gr 1's. He looks back on a thrilling association with a unique horse. Might And Power's trainer Jack Denham also prepared another of Brian's favourites. The jockey looks back on a nine win streak with the talented Fairway. Brian talks about his association with the enigmatic Jack Denham.  He reflects on the irony of his final day at the races in 2002- a winner for the late Max Lees and a career ending accident just 90 minutes apart. Brian pays a touching tribute to Karen, his wife of 41 years.  It's a nostalgic chat with one of the best riders of his generation.

Why Builders Aren't Building

Hotspotting

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2024 5:14

Home builders and property developers make their money creating new dwellings for Australian households. If they get it right, they can make lots of money doing what they do. When they decide NOT to do what they do, you have to ask why. Why are the builders of major projects of housing or apartments walking away from their plans? Why are big companies who have spent years and millions of dollars planning a major project making the decision not to build it? We've seen many instances recently. An example is the decision by AVJennings to abandon a major housing development near Caboolture in the outer northern suburbs of Greater Brisbane. This project would have added 3,500 new homes to a market where there is a desperate shortage. Brisbane is a market with high demand and a serious shortage of homes. Why would a big developer with a proven track record and the capacity to deliver these kinds of projects make the very big decision to walk away from the project? All that time and money wasted. The answer is: it's simply not viable. AVJennings said massive cost escalations – including the infrastructure charges and delays in getting approvals imposed by local councils – meant the project was no longer viable. I have had discussions recently with developers who say that the cost of creating big residential projects is so high, it's not economically and financially feasible. They would have to place such a high price on the end product that few households would be able to afford to buy the homes. A number of developers have spoken out about the impact that the cost impositions of local councils have on making projects difficult or unviable. Orchard Property Group managing director Brent Hailey says the major infrastructure costs imposed on them make it too expensive for them to build homes. Hailey said that, for example, developers in that Caboolture West precinct that AV Jennings has rejected had to pay for council infrastructure charges and also state government charges because it's in a Priority Development Area. Hailey says: “We're at this point now in SEQ where unless the solutions are put in place quickly, there's going to be a rapid decline in affordability, forced by supply not meeting demand.” He says: “The problem facing developers is the cost of delivering the infrastructure and the balance between fully servicing those costs and trying to get an affordable home. There's the normal council charges and the Priority Development Area (PDA) charges. During Covid-19 costs went through the roof, so now infrastructure is costing a lot more.” Here's another issue which is preventing the creation of affordable homes in Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's pledge to build 40,000 affordable homes through the Government's $10bn housing fund will struggle to deliver any houses at all in Labor's first term of office because only a handful of builders in Australia are eligible to participate in the program. Rules written into the Housing Australia Future Fund legislation require builders contracted to work on new social and affordable homes under the scheme to be accredited for working on government-funded projects. However, of the more than 400,000 construction companies registered in Australia, only around 500 are accredited by the Federal Safety Commissioner under the Work Health and Safety Scheme for eligibility to bid for head contracts funded directly or indirectly by the government. There are few if any residential builders accredited under the scheme in Tasmania and only a limited number in regional Australia. The industry claims the limitation threatens to severely hamper or stall Housing Australia's ability to deliver its target of 40,000 social and affordable homes. This comes at a time when the new construction code being imposed by governments is adding $30,000 to $40,000 to the already-high cost of building new homes in Australia. These are just the latest events adding to a substantial list of situations which create the inevitable conclusion that we have a serious housing shortage in Australia, and very expensive new homes in this country, because of the short-sighted policies of politicians at all levels of government.

I'll never forget the day Sky Channel boss Graham McNeice told me he was bringing a young race caller from Queensland to join the Sky team. Russell Leonard was only seventeen, very talented but very intimidated by the big city. The youngster loved the experience but couldn't adapt to life in a city like Sydney. We catch up with 50 year old Russell Leonard three decades after homesickness sent him scurrying home to Rockhampton.  Right off the top we investigate the nickname by which he's universally known.   Russ takes us through his current work schedule. You'll be surprised when he outlines the number of horses trained at Callaghan Park in Rockhampton. Russ helps to coordinate trackwork a couple of days a week. He talks of the outstanding racing surfaces available at Rockhampton and Mackay. Russ takes us back to childhood days with his horse trainer father Keith Leonard. He remembers life on the road with a truckload of horses. They met some interesting people. He has never forgotten his “baptism of fire” behind the microphone when the Clermont race caller couldn't get there. Russ looks back on early days as a caller on bush tracks and his first real opportunity in Rockhampton. He's never forgotten the fateful phone call from Graham McNeice which enticed him to Sydney. He reflects on a busy year with Sky Channel and the lingering homesickness that brought him home. Russ looks back on a short but fascinating stint in Port Moresby. He couldn't believe the volume of wagering in the New Guinea betting shops. This man has crammed a lot into his fifty years. He remembers his role as racing manager to the late Bruce McLachlan at the trainer's world class Caboolture training centre. Russ talks of his long stint as a sales rep in the liquor industry- firstly with Hardys Wines and later with Bacardi Lion. The talented Leonard takes us through his role as a compere of the popular Calcutta functions which precede regional Cup meetings. He's in demand as far afield as Warrnambool.  Russ talks of his marriage to Karen and the progress of their two sons. Russ pays tribute to two special horses who cut their teeth on Central Queensland tracks. You'll know the names. I can't believe more than three decades have passed since “Brolga” spent a restless year in Sydney. Lovely to catch up with a dyed in the wool Queenslander.

Racing fans have been pleased to see Glyn Schofield's presence at three recent barrier trial sessions at Rosehill. Until his resumption in late August the veteran jockey hadn't been seen since Boxing Day of last year. He reveals that a painful problem with his right arm required extensive surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation. Glyn takes us back to early childhood in his native England and the job transfer that took his family to Johannesburg. He says horses were of no interest to him at this stage of his life. The ace jockey talks about his time as a pupil at the famous Durban Jockeys Academy- the institution which launched the careers of several champion jockeys. Glyn talks of his apprenticeship to Alister Gordon and his very first winner at Scottsville. He makes mention of some special horses who got him going in South Africa. He remembers a working holiday he had in 2001 at the Caboolture training operation of the late Bruce McLachlan. Glyn recalls another visit to Queensland for the 2002 winter carnival. He won a race for Gai Waterhouse on the Gold Coast. Schofield talks about the three month contract in Hong Kong that would last for four years. He talks about the amazing career parallels shared by himself and brother-in-law Jeff Lloyd. They made a joint decision to leave the political instability of South Africa and move their families to Australia. Glyn talks of the gradual acceptance by Sydney trainers and a few special early winners. He didn't know it at the time, but he got to ride a budding champion in 2009. He wasn't able to retain the ride. He talks of a Randwick fall in 2011 and the surgery that got him to Singapore a few weeks later. He won the Singapore Gold Cup with 14 screws in his collar bone. Glyn reviews his association with a number of his favourite horses with special mention of the amazing Hay List. The jockey recalls the emotional day in the Rosehill jockeys room when he watched son Chad win the Cox Plate on Shamus Award. He talks of Chad's progress and his current activities in Hong Kong. Glyn speaks affectionately of daughters Demi and Whitney. He looks back on the dark days of 2014 when Whitney lost husband Nathan Berry to a rare disease. The top jockey talks of wife Tiffany's love affair with Sydney. The fifty four year old speaks of his eagerness to get back into active competition against some of Sydney's hottest young jockeys. Glyn's an excellent storyteller.

Just imagine working with a group of young people who are so keen that they come in for hours every week to work on the coolest project. Simone Buckingham leads one of this type of teams at St. Columban's in Caboolture.  An aerospace school that partners with the likes of Air Bus and Boeing with students looking for careers in the industry, what better way to gain skills and make your self stand out from the crowd than building a fully functional aircraft.  18 young people aided by many mentors and teachers are doing just that. It is just so exciting. I hope you enjoy.  Thanks to Simone for the chat!   About the Bridge Building Podcast “This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.” So what does that mean other than I like to show off my alliteration skills? Since coming back to teaching a few years ago the thing that strikes me most, and frankly scared me most is how lonely this job is. How little we know about what is happening in our subject area. The classroom next door, a class in the next school, let alone the next town are a mystery to me. I know there are teachers out there doing incredible things and this (the podcast) is a way for me to find out and be inspired. NEW CLEAR VISION Announce Farewell

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 23, 2020 17:29

Sunshine Coast band New Clear Vision have sadly officially announced their separation, with a farewell show planned on the Gold Coast this weekend.Since 2015 the band have played with and alongside some of the best local, national and international band's in the business, winning over a loyal legion of fans and forging many friendships along the way.Frontman Brad Bromfield is no stranger to the music scene, having previously been with Messiam for a number of years, but this larger than life character has also been through good times and bad for the love of his art and sat down with HEAVY earlier this week for a chat about the break-up and plans for the future. In a sometimes emotional coversation, Brad opened up about his feelings of the end of another musical relationship – which is what being in a band is – and answered quite a few tough questions that were difficult for me to ask but even more difficult for him to answer. This is an interview everyone should listen to – musician or not – to give you a true gauge of the human side of these people that many of us only know from their stage persona. Things can, and often are, extremely difficult and take their toll physically and emotionally with often the person dealing with these demons having to do so alone.Big thanks to Brad for his honesty and conviction.I started by asking how he was feeling about the reality of this weekend possibly being the last time New Clear Vision perform together on stage."Yeah... I dunno mate...,” he struggled. “I've been in the band six years... yeah, it's tough man.”As to why the band are ceasing, the reason is refreshingly simple, yet still obviously hard to talk about."CJ (Nash, drummer) moved down the Coast basically,” he measured. “We knew this in January before Covid hit but that shit stormed everything we had planned to farewell it. We had shows and were gonna run things out which would have been pretty awesome but then Covid hit and shit hit the fan so all of them shows went and CJ moved to the Gold Coast so yeah, that really. There's no underlying anything, just separation. Shit happens and made it really hard. We had to travel to Caboolture and he had to travel also which was hard. I can only wish him well. We're still close which is good."New Clear Vision were a band that had to be seen live to fully appreciate, and one which, although gaining some form of success on the local front still fell far short of reaching their potential."No, fuck no, no way,” Brad agreed. “We were together for six years but we've only been out doing live shit from 2016 to pretty much the end of last year. We were only hitting our straps which fucken sucks. That's the hardest thing. I've already done that shit with Messiam before but we got further than we did with them.”Believe it or not, musicians feel the same as everyone else, sometimes harder. Losing a band is like losing a family and quite often respective members become down to the point of depression despite putting on a brave face.Brad is no exception, with the pain of the band coming to an end evident in his voice."Yeah I deal with those things like depression and anxiety as many musicians do,” he confessed. “People in the arts always do a lot because I don't know if we're taken seriously half the time. You do, you put your entire life into it - you know that because you talk to a lot of people that do bro. It fucken crushed me mate and I know it's disappointed the boys too... It weighs heavy bro, especially when you get a bit older, you can't be doing this shit forever..."In the full interview, Brad discusses his feelings in greater depth, hints at future plans, explains the drama attached to this weekends performance, some of his greatest achievements as a musician, people he has met along the way and more.Earlier in the week I reached out to some of Brad’s friends and contemporaries in the music industry and got these words of thanks and encouragement. Big love to everyone for their honesty and respect…Cj Nash (New Clear Vision drummer) – “I’ve worked with Brad for over six years now. I owe so much to the guy. I wouldn’t be the person and musician I am today without him.”Matt Young (King Parrot) –“Brad’s a top bloke and a passionate and committed frontman. I have known him for many years and he is a fixture on the Sunshine Coast scene. He has always been helpful and hospitable to King Parrot and myself and does it all with a smile, Bloke’s like Brad are the heartbeat of the Aussie music scene. We love ya brother!”Joel Thompson (Kaosis) – “Brad has that kind of magnetic personality that openly embraces you with genuine love and kindness. He is as authentic as they come - a salt of the earth king among men. He strives for the best and his persistence has seen NCV achieve huge feats in a very short period of time. It is with unbelievable sadness that we hear of NCVs' disbandment. Ripples of mourning reach us across the Tasman and we feel that this should be the dawn of a new era of NCV and not the end of a great band created by a legendary metal toa. Kia Kaha Whanau New Clear Vision.”Jesse Dracman (Darkcell) - “New Clear Vision was just a damn fine band of good dudes, but Brad gave not just quality to his performance, but his spirit was infectious through his band and one that transcends beyond the stage. Playing with NCV has always been a blast, and I cannot wait to see what’s next for Brad. His drive and work ethic is second to none, and any band would be lucky to have him.”Lace Jones (Diskust) – “He is my brother with a heart of gold, a musical genius and a deadset good Cunt.”Mitch Matheson (A Somerset Parade) – “I’ve enjoyed playing gigs with you champion, you’ve always reached out and said Gday! Good luck mate. From me and the ASP lads.”Alexis Tajlia – “New Clear Vision, the Brisbane band born from legendary guys who give their music every drop of passion they possess. Every time I’ve seen them live or shared the stage, I’ve always been in awe of the way they rouse a crowd, their sound and the effort that goes into their outfits. It’s raw, sweaty, authentic & heavy music at its very best. They come at music with honesty, integrity and a no bullsh*t approach that I love and respect. Forever & always an NCV fan. ”Neville Pearce (Snake Mountain) – “I have played many shows with Brad over the years and his drive and passion for his craft has always been inspiring, not to mention he is one hell of a frontman and intimidating to witness, he’s one of our best in the scene for sure.”Chad Ellis – (From Crisis To Collapse) – “Brad’s performances with NCV were always delivered with honesty, integrity and energy, that matched his larger than life off-stage persona. A bloke that shows unparalleled commitment and wears his heart on his sleeve, Brad will always be the epitome of the local SE QLD heavy scene!”Geoffro O’Leary (Piston Fist) – “The guys a beast!!!! Best stage presence in the local scene!”

The Good News:There is a big increase organics in NZ.In past 3 years organic produce sales have increased by 25%, organic beverages increased by 80% and organic wine has quadrupled production.Franklin organic farmers grass roots organization of 300 people are organizing themselves by taking back control of their food supply, establishing community networks.Humans no need to be competitive, but cooperative relationships brings connection and happiness in communityOrganics NZ are still committed to be the worlds first organic country but Bhutan, Bali and Costa Rica are far closer. NZ organic growers definitely want NZ to lead. What we are dealing with:Though our Government is not talking organics to the world, ironically the world is talking organics to NZ. Especially China and Taiwan and milk supply for example, and if our food is contaminated the Chinese will instantly halt buying, because they are wanting 'NZs 100 percent pure products.'This superb, newsy, laughter ridden interview covers:Nestles - its problematic partnership with Fonterra.Fluoride - which is a toxic waste product in our drinking water.Cadmium - across NZ farms, in superphosphate - impacting both our health and animals. Damages the liver and kidneys in cattle and sheep that these organs in lambs and cattle over 18 months old are not allowed to be used for human consumption … and are being used for pet food? - is there a connection with NZ cats and renal failure?Plus, NZ cadmium rates are already higher that the maximum standards that they have in the European Union. This heavy metal is a time bomb in our farming sector and needs addressing. In Waikato where more than 160,000 hectares are contaminated to the point that would have been officially labelled as a contaminated site. It can no longer be classed as contaminated because changes to legislation in 2012 removed agricultural land from any contamination classification. A contemptible way to get rid of the problem, by our NZ Govt moving the goal posts.Milk - there is a growing consumer demand for raw milk in rural communities, that's not stripped of its nutrient value of probiotics, when milks is pasteurized, homogenized, UV'd etc. Raw milk is especially good for children and our Government actually knows this, but is reluctant to champion it.Food Labeling - If you cannot pronounce a food - don't eat it, and keep away from processed foods and eat only whole foods.Remember - food is medicine, drugs are not medicine.Diets - why low fat diets fail.Biotechnology - the constant allure of untold riches for big tech corporations, that our Government supports.Christchurch rebuild - organic gardens booming and better networks and health outcomes ensuring the security of their food is growing communities here.GE & GMOs - the continuing problems, the imperative of food labeling of contents and country of origin. GMOs pose a 59 billion dollar threat to the NZ economy and our Clean and Green image.Irradiated food - especially from Caboolture in Qld Australia, that radiates, tomatoes, capsicums and mangos with Cobalt-60. (don't touch)Buy local - grow local, eat local = fresh.Hospital food - the need of fresh vital food so as to heal ones body of both sickness and wounds, but under successive Governments has been ignored, but more so under the present Govt.Chicken cages - abolishing in 2023, but pigs in sow crates are doing better 2015.Bees - decline as are the butterflies = GE and pesticides.Keeping Auckland GE free - Pass local laws so that Ratepayers do not bear the costs if a GE outbreak takes place. Compel the biotech corporation to being responsible for their mistakes.GE Agriculture - is a dead end culture in the final analysis.Go organic, become healthy, get wise.www.organicnz.org.nz
