By this point, the series had largely moved past dual-screen and touchscreen gimmicks, settling on putting the menus and map on the bottom screen with the action on top. Add in a dual-protagonist setup and you've got a recipe for a good metroidvania experience. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it's likely got what you're looking for, and there's value in that. In 1993, Hollywood took the bright colours, bouncing rhythms and cheerful nonsense of Super Mario Bros. and transformed them into a wet cyberpunk dystopia filled with fungus, humanoid dinosaurs and Dennis Hopper. It was only the beginning. For the next three decades, video game adaptations repeatedly reproduced the names, costumes, monsters and locations that players recognised, while struggling to understand the experience that made those games matter. Street Fighter tried to turn a character-select screen into a military action film. Resident Evil replaced vulnerability with superhuman spectacle. Assassin's Creed recreated the rooftops but kept dragging audiences back into rooms where people explained genetic memory. In this episode of Geekstorians, Dave explores why video games presented Hollywood with an adaptation problem unlike books, comics or television. Games are not only stories or worlds. They are things players do, built around movement, timing, failure, discovery and the relationship between a player's hands and a responsive world. From Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider and Doom to Detective Pikachu, Sonic and the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, the industry slowly began to stop apologising for the source material. Then television pushed the breakthrough further, using Castlevania, Arcane, Twisted Metal, The Last of Us and Fallout to find new ways of replacing the controller without losing the feeling behind it.Video game movies were never cursed.Hollywood was simply using the wrong controls...Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. If there's one thing we know about Dracula, it's that he's supposed to be sexy. Not so much on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, where the "Bride of Dracula" episode makes the famous vampire decidedly unappealing. Firestar gets kidnapped to be his bride and is therefore out of commission for almost this entire episode, much to our chagrin. Meanwhile, Spider-Man and Iceman spend the whole episode ragging on each other and competing over Firestar in the process of trying to rescue her, which isn't that fun to watch either. We do make it fun to recap, though, and we also manage to make several references to Castlevania and Ryan's self-insert fanfiction about his vampire OC Fearix Wolfgang. Summary: āHave you ever been to a buffet where you literally try everything?ā Ā Sometimes the best way to find your new favorite things is to just sample a lot of different things until you find the things that you enjoy the most. As with a buffetā¦or even dating, you just āgrab somethingā you think you might like and āgive it a tasteā. If you like it, you keep going back for more. And if it's not your thing, you simply continue the process of sampling and tasting other things until you find something you truly enjoy. Ā Founded by Markus Staiger in Donzdorf, Germany way back in 1987, NUCLEAR BLAST has signed a myriad of metal artists over the years from across the spectrum of sub genres, ranging from hardcore and symphonic metal to industrial metal, thrash metal, and beyond, including some top tier legacy thrash bands from the 1980's that enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the 2000's (fun fact: Slayer's final studio album, Repentless, is the highest charting NUCLEAR BLAST release in the United States, making it to Number 4 on the Billboard 200.) Ā In the context of this particular episode, we are referring to our recent sampling of the artist roster from NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS, and much like with dating and buffets, there were some bands we enjoyed more than others, some that were right up our alley and REALLY hit the spot, and some that just weren't our cup of tea (so to speak), but rest assured that everything we sampled was most definitely interesting and we learned a few things along the way. Ā Prepare for the most philosophical voicemail about metal music that we've ever received, realize that when it comes to power outages and paranormal activity that āI just wanna make sure that they know that I know that they knowā and remember that āsometimes, wet's not badā when you JOIN US on our sampling expedition of the NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS artist roster.Ā VisitĀ www.metalnerdery.com/podcastĀ for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies āĀ metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: FacebookĀ -Ā Instagram - TikTok Email: metalnerdery@gmail.com Can't be LOUD Enough Playlist on Spotify Metal Nerdery Munchies on YouTube @metalnerderypodcast Show Notes: (00:01): āSo, it's wet over thereā¦? After nearly a month off due to illness, sabotage, betrayal, and maybe even murder, the RPGrinders are back! It was a hard-fought month. We've been bloodied and beaten but not defeated! We are back and nothing can derail us again... after Frank's week off Vegas vacation. Then we will be back, again! Ā Since the Grinders were off for a little bit, the news kind of piled up. Even worse, Break is late. But that can't derail the news and the massive amount of release dates. For the first time since pre-pandemic the Castlevania franchise is back with a brand new entry. It's time to get excited because we have that release date and many more. Including the next Star Wars game, the Fable remake, and several Switch 2 ports. Ā This show was slightly unusual as it was shorter, and Break didn't have a thousand Stinkoes. So instead, the Grinders spent some time to discuss the state of video game physical media and the announcement from Sony that their plan on ending the development of physical media. Will the old gamers be able to understand that newfangled technology? How long will the digital media last? How long will you be able to play the games you purchased? What are the positives and negatives of a future without discs or cartridges?Ā Ā Although this episode was shorter. There is nothing that can stop the Grinders from coming back the following week!Ā Wait. What's that? That was the Friday before last and there was no episode last Friday... Um. I blame Frank! Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Also, Game Night will be back reeeeally soon! Frank continues his quest of world domination, or something like that. Ā Ā Ā Ā Yea, yea. This one is shorter than usual. Sue me! Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Actually, don't do that. I have no money for which you would want to sue. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I'm not the lawsuit you are looking for.Ā

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow sits tucked away in the middle of 30 different Castlevania games.Ā First released for the Gameboy Advance in 2003, it takes strong inspiration from Symphony of the Night - yet is running on far weaker hardware.Ā It introduced the Soul System - where killing enemies grants you their powers - a mechanic so ingrained into popular games today that it's almost ubiquitous.Ā You would be forgiven for thinking this is yet another Castlevania game. But it isn't.Ā Many cite Aria of Sorrow as the best handheld Castlevania game, and some even have it as their absolute favourite.Ā Does Aria of Sorrow have some secret sauce that makes it so special, do all of its elements come together beautifully, or are people just remembering playing into the night while hiding their GBA under their bedsheets? On this episode, we discuss:Music. Music is important in most games, but especially so in Castlevania, which started to include music references in their game titles after SOTN.Ā How good is the music in Aria of Sorrow, and is it a good fit for the GBA hardware?Aesthetics. How well does Aria deliver a beautiful Castlevania game for the gba, from sprite work to animations?Ā What are the gameplay implications of having cleaner, less busy graphics?Souls. How dark are they?Ā But actually, how does this system function in terms of giving the player novelty versus usefulness?Ā Is it frustrating that souls don't level and scale with the player, or is this an essential part of what makes them work? We answer these questions and many more on the 140th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! ā Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen K Outro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to another Aria of Sorrow OST - Michiro YamaneSymphony of the Night OST - Michiro Yamane ā Was Aria of Sorrow one of the best Castlevania games you ever played, or just another one in the pack?Ā Were there any ridiculous secrets we missed?Ā What Metroidvania should we play next?Ā Ā Ā Come let us know what you think on our community discord server! It somehow feels authentically retro and yet wholly unique at the same time. As much as the game is touted as a top down Zelda-like, it borrows just as much DNA from the likes of NES games like Dragon Warrior, StarTropics, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden. Persona is heading to live-action, and Netflix has the rights. The breakdown covers the creative team now attached, what the deal signals about Netflix's growing video game pipeline, and why Persona 5 fans should keep their expectations measured for now. This one runs through the names that matter: Christopher Monfette as writer and showrunner, with Shawn Levy and Robert Atwood of 21 Laps producing, the same banner behind Stranger Things. From there it widens out to Netflix's track record with adaptations like The Witcher, Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Castlevania, then lands on the bigger picture for the franchise, with Persona 6 confirmed this month and Persona 4 Revival on the way. The Fork In Your Ear Ep#215 Eternia of Games! - Podcast Show Notes Summary 6-13-26 Gaming News ā Oops All Games Edition! Tim and Nate kick off with an "oops all games" episode packed wall-to-wall with fresh showcases. They open with the Xbox Games Showcase (June 7). Tim watched with Jessica while making breakfast; Nate and Cara ran it live in the Discord. Key highlights: Gears of War: E-Day (Oct 6, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Game Pass day one, Unreal Engine 5 built from the ground up by The Coalition). The prequel Emergence Day story stars Marcus and Dom. The Coalition's deep Unreal expertise and "from-scratch" approach have everyone hyped for performance and visuals. Tim and Nate debate third-person cover shooters (Nate's not a fan of the mechanic; Tim loves the destroyed world, underground critters, and chainsaw guns). Fable ā New cinematic trailer confirms Haley Atwell (Agent Carter) as the long-teased villain Isabel. Jack of Blades gets a surprise tease, hinting at multiple villains. A 30-minute full gameplay video dropped days later showing a talking pig quest, romance options, UI, and systems in action. Delayed to February 23, 2027 (Xbox, PC, Game Pass, and still coming to PS5) to polish and avoid GTA 6. Tim is very excited; Nate is cautiously optimistic but holding judgment on open-world RPG scope. Halo: Campaign Evolved (July 28, Xbox, PC, PS5, Game Pass) ā UE5 remake of Halo 1 with core Blam engine (physics/game logic pulled from Halo: Reach) for that authentic "spongy" feel. New Sergeant Johnson voice actor, prequel missions (Assault on the Control Room & Silent Cartographer) locked behind the main campaign, vehicle jacking, new weapons (energy sword, fuel rod, brute spiker), sprint, clambering, 40+ skulls, and a "Remix Mode" for wild enemy swaps/randomization. 4-player co-op (local split-screen + online). Previews are extremely positive; limited collector's editions sold out fast. Tim is all-in on the respectful-yet-improved remake treatment and wants to share it with new players. Other Xbox news: Persona 6 trailer reactions (mixed/underwhelmed), new Spyro game from Toys for Bob (Tom Kenny returning as Spyro, Dragonflight mechanics), Clockwork Revolution (InXile steampunk RPG, Xbox ecosystem exclusive vibes), S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-era title getting Unreal Engine help from The Coalition + Grounded-style cross-world system, new dark Metro game from the Ukrainian team (still developing in wartime conditions), Resonance (Plague Tale legacy?), Minecraft Dungeons 2, new Senua Hellblade-universe action game (Nate loved the first, mixed on the second; Tim was never a fan but this one looks more classic Ninja Theory), Crazy Taxi World Tour (2027, pure arcade nostalgia), and Castlevania: Belmont's Curse (Oct 15 ā Tim is already hooked into his veins; Switch 2 version delayed, which upsets him).
This time we talk about some table top rpgs, game announcments, and other random stuff before we get to Mina the Hollower. This game was just recently released by the creators of Shovel Knight and has been taking the gaming community by storm. We highly recommend this Zelda-souls-Castlevania like game. It brings back the nostalgia and love from gameboy games but also the toughness of any souls like game. Its hard, fun, and you never want to put it down. Showcase season is done ā and this week it delivered. Greg, Ty, and Uly break down everything that mattered across Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Games Showcase 2026.On the list: Persona 6 officially revealed (and it's going darker ā finally), Castlevania: Belmont's Curse confirmed as a direct follow-up to the Netflix anime with Rose Belmont as the lead, Resident Evil Veronica and why dropping "Code" from the title is actually a smart move, the surprisingly very real Wolf Among Us 2, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Monster Hunter Ascendance, Palworld 1.0, Star Trek Shadow Frontier (yes, a horror Trek game), and Metro 2039.On the Xbox side: Persona 6 drops at the showcase, Fable gets a Twilight Princess-level dark glow-up, Gears of War E-Day stays exclusive (and the guys are fine with it), Halo gets a muted reaction, and collector's edition pricing gets a full roast. The State of Play breakdown is exclusive on GZ Chop Shop UNCUT ā Patreon only. Also: Greg fumbled the intro badly. On this episode of Random Encounter, we're digging for some sweet, sweet caffeine!First up, Bob is here to chat about Yacht Club Games' newest title, Mina the Hollower. Yacht Club struck gold a decade ago with their retro side-scroller Shovel Knight and its various campaigns, but since then, they've apparently been on the bubble financially. Well, that doesn't seem to be a problem anymore because Mina the Hollower appears to be a hit! This top-down, Link's Awakening-esque and Castlevania-esque soulslike currently has everyone talking, and Bob and Jono certainly can't stop chatting about it! Spoiler alert: it's absolutely fantastic!Next, Audra and Mike are here for a steaming cup of Coffee Talk Tokyo. As the third entry in this lo-fi, relaxing visual novel series, the game moves its setting from rainy Seattle to neon Tokyo. Does the charm of Coffee Talk successfully make the jump across the Pacific?Oh, and we also chat about our hopes for next week's Not-E3 (and be sure to stay tuned for our 2026 Not-E3 Extravaganza episode)!Ā Featuring: Jono Logan, Audra Bowling, Mike Salbato, and Jerry Williams; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomBluesky: @rpgfan.bsky.socialInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:Mina the HollowerCoffee Talk TokyoCoffee Talk ReviewCoffee Talk 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly ReviewDragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams
The developers of Shovel Knight are, at long last, back with a new gameāand despite the long wait, it's absolutely fantastic. Mina the Hollower is a love letter to topdown games like Zelda, mixed in with elements of Castlevania, Dark Souls, and many others.
