Current studies estimate that 2.7% to 6.5% of women in the United States have symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). The broad range in prevalence depends on whether a high-sensitivity definition (6.53%) is used versus a highly specific definition (2.7%) And that is really an underestimate, because most people complaining of painful, urinary discomfort, urgency, and frequent urination; in the absence of an infection are just brushed off by their health care provider and sent home with no solutions. Meanwhile they suffer, with constant urging to urinate and pain sometimes to the point that urinating feels like peeing chards of glass. It is not something that is over in a few days. This is a chronic and intermittent condition In previous episodes of the one thing podcast we spoke about IC and got a nice view of the microbial and also biofilm component; however there was more to the story that I wanted to explore. So I reached out to Dr. Mandy LaGrega who is known as the IC healer. I was intrigued by her work in this area especially when it comes to her knowledge of the Oxalate component of IC/PBS and her understanding of the gut, fungal, mycotoxin, and psychoemotional role of these disorders. We had a great conversation on this episode about how IC/PBS develops, how oxalates play a role, the risk factors for IC/PBS, and overall approaches to healing this disorder from a nutritional approach. Enjoy! About Dr. Mandy Dr. Mandy LaGreca is a Root Cause Investigator and founder of IC Healer. She uses cutting edge science to help guide clients in investigating the root cause of their ailments. Dr. Mandy is a Doctor in Clinical Nutrition (DCN) and a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS). She also has attained the following certifications: Clinical Certification Nutrition (CCN), Functional Diagnostic Practitioner (FDN-P), Masters in Biology (MS), and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT). She is recognized across the world as one of the leading experts in Interstitial Cystitis and Painful Bladder Syndrome. In this episode, Katarina chats with Jessica Ash about metabolic health, digestion, and the nervous system. Former PCOS and Hypothyroid sufferer turned hormone nerd. Jessica spent a fair share of the first half of her life on the roller coaster that is hormone imbalances. Over 4 years of restrictive diets, expensive functional doctor visits and thousands of dollars of supplements left her only a bit better off than where she started. She decided to ditch the health and wellness trends and go back to basics, digging into biology, anatomy, endocrinology, and nutritional biochemistry. Jessica's credentials include Bachelor of Science (BS), Clinical Nutritionist Consultant (CNC), Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), Integrative Holistic Health Coach (INHC), and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT). Celebrity Trainer Joey Thurman with tips on how “A Morning Shot” and “Donating to Booze Jar” Keeps You On Track I was inspired recently by a quote by Julia Cameron. "Treating my body like a precious object will make me strong." That really resonated with me and if you, like me, have never liked the "crush it" mentality of the fitness world, you are going to love my guest this week, Joey Thurman. I had the best time chatting with him and I know you'll love him too! Highlights from the episode: Why being in a bad mood is OKAY... and what to do next. The lies we are told by the diet industry. Hector discovered his passion health and fitness in 2000 after starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under mentor Aurelio Gallegos Jr. While instructing students in a variety of techniques, he realized the importance of human movement, proper biomechanics, balance, strength, mobility, stability, and endurance. Inspired, he pursued education in Hatha Yoga, becoming a registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) in 2009. The same year, through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (N.A.S.M), he earned his Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) credentials. Soon after, Hector launched a 2 year campaign, seeking for a training method to give him an unfair advantage on the mat. He found his answer after a grueling Jiu-Jitsu seminar with BJJ Black Belt Tyrone Glover of Paragon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He asked Tyrone, "What are you doing for your strength and conditioning? You have the strength of a 200-pounder but only weigh 165 pounds!" His answer was, “Kettlebells”. The following day Hector immersed himself in all things strength and Russian kettlebell training. Looking to maximize his potential, he turned to the expertise found at the elite level of the Russian Kettlebell Challenge (RKC) now StrongFirst. Hector is now a proud member of the StrongFirst Leadership Team and currently holds the rank of Senior Instructor under Pavel Tsatsouline. After years of personal training, teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Yoga—Hector decided to couple his passion for movement and strength with coaching. In 2011, he established the first and only movement based kettlebell/Jiu-Jitsu school in the world. Hardstyle (Kettlebells/Jiu Jitsu) KBJJ! For the last 10+ years he’s dedicated his life to helping his students get back in shape, take control of their lives, and no longer be ashamed of what they see in the mirror. Today, Hector is on a new mission to help 10,000 men become the man, husband, & father they were called to be. PaiWellnessGroup.com asha@paiwellnessgroup.com Facebook.com/paiwellnessgroup Instagram.com/paiwellnessgroup Dr. Asha Pai Bohannon has more than 23 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She is a Holistic Doctor of Pharmacy and the owner of PAI Wellness Group, LLC in Raleigh, North Carolina. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Asha is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT). She is also certified in Medication Therapy Management (MTM) and Immunization. In her practice at PAI Wellness Group, Dr. Asha uses a unique, 7 Steps to H.A.R.M.O.N.Y.™ process and a 360-degree holistic, individualized approach to helping her patients manage their health and wellness, using as few medications as possible. Dr. Asha is especially focused on and adept at helping men and women manage pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Recently, Dr. Asha published a book entitled To Medicate or Not? That Is the Question: How to Improve Your Blood Test Results, in which she describes her 7 Steps to H.A.R.M.O.N.Y.™ and the many factors that come into play in order to achieve a healthier life. Her newest passion comes in the form of a collaboration with her husband Eric: helping other Pharmacists find their passion and purpose and create the opportunity that is right for them. With their Biz Rx™ service, they want to be “The prescription for YOUR business!” I invited Asha to be on my podcast because she advocates for patient health and wellness as well as pharmacist entrepreneurship in her practice at PAI Wellness Group. We met at the 2018 Medipreneurs Conference in Asheville, North Carolina. I’m glad we met, and it’s been a pleasure to watch her develop her business over the past two years. You can find the book To Medicate or Not? That Is the Question: The Ultimate Guide to Improving Blood Test Results at bit.ly/ToMedicateOrNot Another book in the works. It is unrelated to the first book. Q: How did this all get started? A: Asha’s personal health journey. 2 services are offered by PAI Wellness Group 7 Steps to H.A.R.M.O.N.Y.™, which helps patients manage their health and wellness in a holistic manner. Biz Rx™, a 10-week program to help pharmacist entrepreneurs from idea to launch. Her husband Eric coaches the business piece. Dr. Asha coaches the clinical piece and fills in the gaps. Q: When did you realize you had a passion for coaching? A: For years! It took time to create a business and offer services. Q: Has your clientele grown? A: Yes! For Biz Rx™, Eric and Asha met their first clients at Medipreneurs 2019. Pharmacists are looking to leave traditional practice. Asha and Eric can help. Free 30-minute consults are available. Q: Do you only coach pharmacists to create wellness practices? A: No. Lots of niches have come through: women’s health, migraine, travel, and more. Services can be created based on the client’s needs. Clients create private practices. Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen so far in your business? A: In her wellness practice, some people will not spend money on their own healthcare. In Biz Rx™, some Pharmacists undervalue themselves. Q: What do you love most about your business? A: Flexibility: working around family’s schedule. Asha wears a lot of hats. She has a flexible schedule and can work with clients on their time. She also enjoys working with her husband. Making an impact on the profession of pharmacy is very rewarding too! Q: How did you overcome the fear and the little voice in your head that you can’t do this, Asha? A: It’s a growing process. It took her some time to get over her own imposter syndrome. Now, she gets to help others get over it! “Just do it. Pick yourself up. Dust yourself off. Keep moving forward.” Asha is also inspired by her kids; she doesn’t want them to see her fail. Q: What’s something people don’t realize about being a pharmacist mom and an entrepreneur? A: It’s difficult to be in a traditional pharmacist role. She missed a lot of her kids’s stuff because she was tied to her work schedule. She was stressed and couldn’t be present. As a pharmacist Mom entrepreneur, she enjoys the flexibility of being present for her job, her family, and her other commitments. Q: Agree or disagree, starting a business is like having another child? A: Agree. The first 2-3 years during launch, yes! Her business sets her soul on fire. She wants to jump out of bed in the morning and work! Q: What did it feel like when you got that first client? A: AMAZING! But, nerve-wracking. She wants to deliver the results clients need. Extra time and energy goes into making sure everything is just right so that she gives a good quality experience. (That goes for both sides of Asha’s business!) Q: What is the best thing that has happened to you since you started? A: Being able to help people and make an impact in their lives. Also, helping people find options they haven’t considered yet. Randal Pich is the owner of not one... not two... but THREE businesses! You may be familiar with his most popular brand, Live Fit. Randal's parents came to the U.S when fleeing Cambodia from genocide and relocated in East Long Beach CA. Growing up in a rough neighborhood surrounded by poverty stricken minorities and gangs around every corner, life wasn't too easy. The one thing that saved Randal from falling into the wrong path was his passion for Skateboarding. Randal believes skateboarding was where he first realized the importance of how dedicated you need to be in order to succeed at anything in life, and would strive for perfection. Fitness came into his life around 16 and it stuck with him ever since! Fast forward a couple years and he became a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and once he started working independently, he was making 6-figures while still in college. Eventually Randal decided to start making t-shirts for his clients to represent him and his training. But as time went on, people became so interested in his clothing brand that sales started skyrocketing and were almost on the same level of income as his training business! So Randal made the decision to stop training and put his all into the clothing brand, and well... the rest is history! I hope you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as I enjoyed making it! Randal is the true definition of an entrepreneur and creator. Listen to Randal's story and get inspired to chase your dreams! I trust that if this is not what I'm supposed to be doing, then I can't even fathom how amazing my life will be with my next decision." - Ali Reti "As humans, we're meant to collaborate and go through experiences together. Whatever you're experiencing right now, you're not actually meant to go through it alone. Hector is the owner and head instructor of Hardstyle KBJJ in Corpus Christi, TX. Hector discovered his passion for strength training and overall conditioning in 2000 at Paragon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Now Presa BJJ) under mentor Aurelio Gallegos Jr. Advancing through his training, Hector became an assistant instructor in 2003. While instructing students in a variety of techniques, Hector realized the importance of human movement, proper biomechanics, balance, strength, mobility, stability, and endurance. Inspired, he pursued education in Hatha Yoga, becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). In 2009, through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (N.A.S.M), he became a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES). Hector then began a search for a training technique/tool that would enable him to evolve athletically. He found his answer after a Jiu-Jitsu seminar with black belt Tyrone Glover at Paragon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Hector asked Tyrone, "What are you doing for your strength and conditioning? You have the strength of a 200-pounder but only weigh 165 pounds!" The answer was Kettlebells. Taking up this new discipline, Hector immersed himself in Russian Kettlebell training. Looking to maximize his potential, he turned to the expertise found at the elite level of the Russian Kettlebell Challenge (RKC) now StrongFirst. After 10 intense (and challenging) years, incorporating the Russian Kettlebell into his Jiu-Jitsu training, Hector earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt August 22, 2011 from Ricardo (Franjinha) Miller and Aurelio Gallegos Jr.. In 2011, he established the first and only movement based kettlebell / Jiu-Jitsu school in the world. Hardstyle (Kettlebells / Jiu Jitsu) KBJJ!
