As an astronaut, Carl is a veteran of four spaceflights, logging a total of 231 days in outer space and performing three spacewalks during that time.A physicist by training, with degrees from Kent State and John Carroll University, Carl made his way to NASA via the Air Force, where he served as a flight test engineer and managed all engineering activities related to F-16 avionics and armaments. At NASA, he was a mission specialist on STS-51 in 1993, an orbiter flight engineer on STS-65 in 1994, a mission specialist on STS-79 in 1996, and ultimately served 196 days in space as a flight engineer on ISS Expedition Four from 2001 to 2002.His expansive career at NASA includes missions aboard the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station (ISS). Most notably, Carl served as a flight engineer for ISS Expedition Four, living and working in space for 196 consecutive days. Later, as Director for the Advanced Capabilities Division at NASA Headquarters, Carl led critical programs involving Human Research, Technology Development, and Lunar Robotic Exploration. To say this was an awesome conversation would be the understatement of Lay of The Land…Our conversation explored his rigorous journey to becoming an astronaut, the profound experience of living and working in space, the awe-inspiring perspective gained from orbit, and the unique challenges of transitioning back to life on Earth. We also discussed his role in shaping the future of private sector space exploration (Oceaneering, Orbital ATK), international collaboration in space missions, and even his time performing with the only astronaut band in history!00:00:00 - Introduction to Carl Walz and His Journey 00:05:39 - The Path to Becoming an Astronaut 00:07:49 - The Ohio Astronaut Legacy 00:10:07 - Experiences in Space Missions 00:12:37 - The Awe of Spacewalks 00:14:58 - Life on the International Space Station 00:17:33 - Scientific Experiments in Space 00:19:46 - Dealing with Adversity in Space 00:21:41 - The Fulfillment of Space Exploration 00:23:56 - Transitioning Back to Earth and the Private Sector 00:30:55 - Navigating the Challenges of Spacecraft Development 00:35:09 - The Evolution of Public-Private Partnerships in Space 00:38:36 - The Future of Space Exploration: Mars and Beyond 00:43:59 - Perspectives on Extraterrestrial Life and UFOs 00:45:40 - The Unique Experience of an Astronaut Band 00:50:38 - Hidden Gem-----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/carl-walz-21b4579/https://www.oceaneering.com/-----SPONSOR:Roundstone InsuranceRoundstone Insurance is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land. A survey of nearly 1,500 residents reveals that Clevelanders were two to three times more likely to have unmet food, housing and transportation needs, as compared to the state and nation.
Buckle up, degenerates—we're diving into the most unhinged night in baseball history: Ten Cent Beer Night. Picture this: a stadium full of rowdy Clevelanders pounding dirt-cheap beer like it's the purge, and shocker—it ends in a full-scale riot. We're talking streakers, fistfights, drunken fans storming the field, and the home team literally running for their lives. And honestly? For a city that lit a river on fire, released a million balloons into the sky only to cause mass chaos, and watched LeBron leave twice, this might still be Cleveland's lowest moment. Let's get into this beautiful disaster.--Boost Your Focus & Energy with Magic Mind!Looking for a way to stay focused and energized? This upcoming year will undoubtedly bring substantial change to Cleveland's political landscape. A population decline in Cleveland spurred a redraw of ward maps, which were approved by Cleveland City Council in February, but not without controversy. Now there's a new 15-ward playing field, and two open seats following the announcement from long-time Council members Jenny Spencer and Kerry McCormack that they will not run for reelection. New candidates are already jumping into the race.rnrnMeanwhile, in the Mayor's office, the Bibb administration is working to ensure a second term come this November's election. What opportunities and challenges can Clevelanders expect from the City's new political landscape? Join us at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square for a reporter's roundtable, providing insight and analysis on Cleveland's new political ground.
Marvel's 2018 film Black Panther not only broke box office records, it also changed perceptions of Black superheroes and African culture. As the first film to feature a Black superhero, the film's director and writers wasted zero time taking up space in an industry that traditionally lacks BIPOC representation. Joining the team was Ruth E. Carter, whose skill in blending African-American history and contemporary culture through fashion, combined with her determination to showcase Black excellence, won an Academy Award in 2019.rnrnrnNow through April 6th, Clevelanders will have the opportunity to be up close to the outfits created by Carter, in conjunction with the Cleveland Orchestra's performance of Ludwig G?ransson's Oscar-winning score from Black Panther on March 28-29. It is a rare opportunity to see what it looks like when communities can tell their own stories through their creativity, and shift narratives for lasting change.

As the show becomes fully entrenched in the lineup at ESPN, it is heading towards the launching pad that is about to take it to new heights. Before we get there though, the gang continues to struggle with the show just not feeling right. As a last gasp effort to get Dan back in his comfort zone, Mike Ryan makes a call to ESPN executives to take the show off television for two weeks and move back to the smaller studio at The Clevelander. As Mike Ryan says himself, this may have been the move that saved the show. After the break, the show comes out flying what the gang considers to be the golden era of content. Around the time of the studio change, the show is moved into the mid-day slot on ESPN Radio, making it arguably the biggest thing in sports radio at the time. You'll hear from Dan, Stu, Mike, Chris Cote, Old Money Charlie and even former ESPN President, John Skipper, about the show making the transition from Fusion to ESPNU and afternoons to mid days. Then, in line with the golden era of content, get ready for what is far and away the best supercut so far. Here are just some of the highlights: Bob Einstein on Rob Gronkowski, Alan Thicke on Tomas Hertl, Norm Macdonald watching the Draft, We Are The Lobos, Corn Elder and perhaps the most egregious Stugotz mistake in show history. Despite LeBron James returning to Cleveland and Miami moving out of The Big 3 era, the show is reaching new heights. The show is being broadcast on Fusion Network from the brand new studios at The Clevelander, and it has never been more nationally relevant. Executives love the show, the ratings are great and it's even being sold in marketing packets and promoted across ESPN networks. Everything is going great, right? Not so fast. Even though the show is putting out some of the best content it ever has, something feels off to the entire crew and they can't quite put their finger on what it is. While all of this is happening, Charlie Hulme enters the pressure cooker to help improve the quality of the television product and quickly notices something isn't right. As the show searches for answers, the quality of content being produced does not drop and the show barrels towards being a giant. Yet, Mike and Stugotz feel like a critical juncture is looming and fear the end of the show could be near. Then, you will not want to miss this edition of the Supercut which includes some of the most famous stories in show history, the iconic Jesse Ventura interview featuring Pablo Torre dressed as an orca, a banger from Izzy Gutierrez and of the all-time Stugotz blunders in show history. Ryan Schreiber is a long-time Clevelander and major advocate for the city, as well as the founder and CEO of Streamline, an innovative mobile platform tackling one of the streaming industry's most pressing challenges—helping users navigate the increasingly fragmented world of content and entertainment, from sports to shows and movies, across over 200 streaming platforms. With over $1.6 million in funding raised since founding the company earlier in 2024, Ryan is on a mission to transform how we discover and share content. Before launching Streamline, Ryan played a pivotal role in building Vertical Knowledge—another Cleveland-based company that was recently acquired by Babel Street, a leading identity intelligence and risk operations company. Welcome to this brand-new episode of Light ‘Em Up!Tell a friend that lives overseas about us! We are now actively being downloaded in 114 countries. On this investigative, educational and impactful edition of Light ‘Em Up — we expose and tell the truth in a world filled with confusion and misinformation. We delve into the facts not the fiction about: Protecting your Constitutional & Civil Rights and educating you on topics that we're betting you rarely hear or know much about but should know everything about. We drill deep on:— Pretextual traffic stops (something we've given great attention to here on Light ‘Em Up)— Section 1983 lawsuits— and as a case study we examine Whren v U.S. (517 US 806 (1996), a landmark Supreme Court decision that relates directly to how law enforcement interacts with the public today. With a fine-tooth comb, we examine the details as to what exactly is going on in Cleveland, Ohio as the Division of Police, which is currently under DOJ (consent decree) oversight, continues to allegedly cheat, stretch, break and violate the law by intentionally stopping and searching black drivers at much higher rates than white Clevelanders. We explore “When cops become robbers”: When law enforcement officers use their badge and authority to “game” the citizenry as they violate the spirit and letter of the law.We tell the story of the Tenaha, TX Police Department, whose officers were (allegedly) intentionally using their authority to “shake-down” the good people passing through their city limits. The lead officer directly involved literally expressed the intention of using “the money that they get from thugs “from a newly created drug interdiction program to pay the town's bills. A class action lawsuit asserted that their pretextual traffic enforcement scheme was bogus and was designed solely to enhance the city financially and the defendants personally.Especially for you, we have exclusive audio of the Rehnquist High Court as the attorney on behalf of the petitioner (Whren), Lisa Burget Wright, argues their position before the high court on April 17th, 1996.Whren vs U.S. says that “a stop or search that is objectively reasonable is not diminished by the fact that the officer's real reason for making the stop or search has nothing to do with the validating reason”. (Meaning that it is acceptable for an officer to make up a reason to stop you.)We explore and define a §1983 lawsuit, which provides an individual the right to sue state government employees and others acting under the color of state law for civil rights violations. For your education and empowerment, we explore §242 of Title 18, which makes it a crime for a person acting under color of any law to willfully deprive a person of a right or privilege protected by the Constitution or laws of the U.S., and we provide crucial insights as to what your rights are when you are stopped by law enforcement. And we delve into pretextual traffic stops: What are they, and how they are used against you.We also offer a “Know Before You Go” pre-travel safety check-list that will help limit your potential exposure and hopefully reduce the likelihood of being pulled over for any legitimate or pretextual moving traffic violations. Finally, we review an in-depth analysis of what more than 17,000 traffic stops in the City of Cleveland has exposed in and among the CDP (Cleveland Division of Police) as it initially appears that they disproportionately pull over Black drivers with much more frequency than white motorists.Follow our sponsors Newsly & Feedspot here:We want to hear from you!

Cotten is helping to extend universal basic employment to one hundred Clevelanders through a pilot that guarantees a living wage of $50,000 a year. This initiative bypasses the common criticism about universal basic income being just a financial handout. "I think this is a more effective tool, politically," Reed said on the podcast, "because you've got somebody getting up and going to work, just like the rest of us. It's hard for people to hate on someone who's doing the very best they can." Join us for this episode about an idea we should be stealing from Cleveland. Today's Cast: Dan, Stugotz, Greg, Amin, Billy, Tony, Jeremy. There's a living, breathing Babe Ruth in baseball right now and the crew claims they're interested, but nobody actually seems that interested. Why will nobody talk about how incredible Shohei Ohtani is? Why was Jose Altuve taking his shoe off in the batter's box? What if all Clevelanders were guaranteed a job? And that job offered a salary suitable enough to provide for their families? As it turns out, the idea of a jobs guarantee gained momentum in the 1940s with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights. Now, the City of Cleveland will become the first city in the nation to launch a $21 million Universal Basic Employment (UBE) pilot program. Put simply, it will provide 100 participants with a job guarantee of $50,000 for three years. It plans to launch in 2026.rnrnAs the second poorest major city in America, Cleveland is looking to reduce poverty and the need for public assistance by guaranteeing a well-paid job. As opposed to the more popular "Universal Basic Income" - made popular by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang - UBE works directly with employers to subsidize existing, or new wages for its employees.rnrnJoin the City Club as we hear from Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones, Devin H. Cotten with Universal Basic Employment & Opportunity, and Ken Surratt with the United Way of Greater Cleveland on what exactly UBE is - and is not - and what we can expect to learn from Cleveland's UBE pilot program.
Dan is mesmerized by a 105 mph pitch in Major League Baseball, and Tony has a story for the crew involving a mall, a walk, his pregnant wife, and an owl where he felt like George Costanza. With Everwild happening this weekend, we thought it was the perfect time to catch up with the Cleveland band that started it all, Tropidelic. They reflect on the time when it was a simple pool party to the amazing event it is today, attracting thousands of people to Legend Valley in August each year.Joining us at Rock and Roll City Studios opened a floodgate of memories for the founder of the band, Roads, of when the band was still in its early days. He advises to keep pushing through any difficulties to get to that 10-year milestone when the results of your labor really start to show. These guys laid heavy groundwork to get to this point, from making waves before and after sets, to showing up at the RNC to cause a commotion. They are entertainers first and foremost, but we are also proud to call them Clevelanders. After a two-year wait, their brand new album "Royal Grove" is on all streaming platforms, and it's widely agreed to be their best work yet. In this episode, the Butte Blazzter Beaus™ Wulf and Judge Dredd create a horrorcore/black metal crossover band generated completely by AI. The Boyezz™ ask AI for their backstory, the album title and cover of their debut, and the bands they have beef with. Much of this is generated in the style of Joe Pesci's character from Goodfellas with undertones of Lovecraftian horror, capeesh? The Boyst™ consider the various pronunciations of "gyro" and why Clevelanders might have a claim on having the correct pronunciation. David Waldman and Greg Dworkin celebrate the first Wednesday since TFFG earned his 34 Fs. Donald is a felony factory. President Joe Biden finally acknowledged Trump's rising street cred. Kevin McCarthy, Mike Johnson and the Wall Street Journal predict Joe won't spit rhymes at the level of Ice Turd during their upcoming rap battle. “What porn star would Joe Biden smash?” is the question many undecided voters need answered before picking their Tony Soprano this November. Tony could provide some insight into MAGA. The Proud Boys are rebuilding their protection racket. They will have competition from the many mom and pop gangster startups across the nation. Clevelanders are split between those afraid of having their Biden signs shot up, and those who say they deserve it. Trump said that Clinton shouldn't run under investigation, now that she's not running Trump says he doesn't need investigations anymore. He'll just throw her into jail with the rest of them. Wisconsin charges The Cheese! Keneth Chesebro was the head cheese of the cheeseheads attempting to overthrow the 2020 election. Leave it to the Canadian, Mike Roman to not crime it right. So all this craziness has got to swing a few votes toward sanity, right? Right! Well, maybe. The New Jersey primaries yesterday didn't go great for Trump, with Trump's candidate not winning, but of course that means the Democratic candidate won't be running against Trump's candidate.
This week, the Bayer siblings are thrilled to welcome comedian and fellow Clevelander, Dave Hill to the podcast! They're talking about growing up in the city that rocks, Dave rocking all the way to the stage of the Jon Stewart Show with his band Sons Of Elvis and how this catholic school kid became a force to reckon with in the world of entertainment. We also discuss formative concert experiences—including the Guns 'N Roses show Jonah and Dave both saw in 1991 and the very different takeaways they had due to their relatively minor, but at the time major differences in age. (Spoiler alert: Dave's mom didn't take him to the concert.) Plus, we potentially make some headway in the mystery of whether Jewel played at a beloved coffee shop in Cleveland? Finally, in a rousing game of CHANGE.DORK, the three of us debate the merits of Dave getting let back on Twitter, a Cleveland NHL expansion and should Jacob grow a Tony Iommi style mustache? Should Dave grow one? You'll have to listen to find out!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's Cast: Dan, Stugotz, Chris, Mike, Billy, Tony, Jessica. Ding dong, the Warriors are dead. Or are they? Nick Wright didn't invite Dan and Mike to his vow renewal. Do you have to buy a gift for somebody to celebrate not getting divorced? Happy one year at the Elser! Does anybody miss The Clevelander or just ESPN? Plus, Nick Wright was up late trolling Warriors fans after they lost the play-in game. Billy and Stugotz are going to Detroit for the NFL Draft, but Stugotz may be doing the show from Ann Arbor. Then, David Samson joins the show to discuss Pablo Torre uncovering the Knicks Tony Soprano video, why LeBron signing with Miami was the worst day of his career and his live tour extending. Back in 1986, Cleveland was trying to make a new name for itself with a huge, record-breaking balloon launch. The goal was to increase the population, raise money for the community, and make Clevelanders proud. By the end, fingers would be blistered, horses traumatized, a search and rescue mission thwarted, and the good people of Cleveland would be facing an environmental disaster of their own making...yet again.Podcast hosts Luke Burbank and Andrew Walsh (Too Beautiful to Live) join Misha to string together the details of Cleveland's failed Balloonfest of '86.Follow The Big Flop on the Wondery app or wherever you get your podcasts. Interview with Gary & Laura Dumm Gary is a life-long Clevelander. Gary's mom helped teach him to read using comic books as a kid, so they're kind of in his blood! He attended Cuyahoga Community College in the sixties where he took classes in painting and printmaking. He married Laura in 1971, and they started a life of artistic collaboration as well as creating their own art. In 1974 Gary met author Harvey Pekar through a friend of Laura's who worked with Harvey, and began a 30+ year association drawing comics art for his ground-breaking autobiographical comic book “American Splendor”, and Laura added color as needed. Many other comics projects and art show exhibitions have followed for this husband-and-wife team. Laura has had solo art shows, as well as exhibiting with Gary in numerous group shows. They have worked on many publications, independent comic books and graphic novels. They have even co-curated a couple of successful art shows in Cleveland that extolled the virtues and importance of their city's current and storied comics' history., Laura was born, raised and still resides in Cleveland, Ohio. She is a self taught artist who was lucky enough to have gone to a high school (West Tech) that was trying out a new program called “Specialized Art Class” with 6 periods of art a day. Basically a college education for 3 years. She married cartoonist/artist Gary Dumm in 1971. In 1986, after working for various magazine publications, she made the decision to become a freelance graphic artist/illustrator and started her own graphic art business to pay the bills. In 2009 she retired to be a full time painter. First and foremost she is a painter. “I'm a typical Gemini, I need change. I have never worried about having a signature style, painting the same way over and over is a bit boring to me.” For example, from 2008 to 2011, she was painting people/animals in abstract quilt like patterns, paying homage to the women who created quilts as a way to express themselves as well as keeping their families warm. In 2014 she changed to a more realistic pop art style. The one constant in her work is always bright color palette. Gary & Laura Dumm's Info https://www.dummart.com

Do teams just send them out for funsies? (29:40) A lifelong Clevelander asked about stadium renovations. The Guardians are removing the upper deck seats and adding partytime playhouses. Does this mean teams now are under the impression that smaller is better? (37:05) Who are the top 5 athletes I'd want to take on a weekend vacation… interesting.
