Tonight's triple feature tracks the unlikely mainstreaming of one of American cinema's most hostile voices: John Waters. Born in Baltimore in 1946, Waters grew up inside the postwar, Greatest Generation moral order he would spend his career attacking—suburban respectability, sexual repression, and enforced normalcy. These three films mark his evolution from punishment to precision.Polyester (1981) is Waters' first real stab at the mainstream, a vicious parody of 1950s suburban melodrama starring Divine. Complete with Odorama scratch-and-sniff cards, it's less entertainment than indictment—cruel, confrontational, and openly contemptuous of middle-class virtue.By Hairspray (1988), Waters shifts strategy. Set in early-'60s Baltimore and starring Ricki Lake, the film uses classical filmmaking and musical structure to smuggle Waters' politics—body acceptance, integration, anti-bigotry—into a broad audience. It's his Trojan horse.Cry-Baby (1990) completes the arc. Starring Johnny Depp and notably lacking Divine, it reframes 1950s greaser culture with historical accuracy, restoring the era's sexual panic and moral hysteria that nostalgia like Grease erased. More coherent, more humane, and more mature, it's Waters finally understanding rather than punishing his past. You don't have to like John Waters—but these films matter because they remember American culture correctly.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

The Untuned Bell sound installation in Radhusplassen in Oslo. This 1.4-ton bell (anno 1949) was removed from the bell tower of Oslo City Hall because it was no longer in tune with the other 48 bells.  The artist found the bell lying silent on the ground and restored its voice. From its new home on Radhusplassen, here outside the City Hall, the bell can once again interact with the bells in the tower. By putting your foot on a Cry Baby wah pedal nearby, you can activate the untuned bell.  Recorded in September 2025 by Cities and Memory.

Keep defying gravity. Bye. "I may be a drape, but I love your granddaughter. And if that's a crime, I'll stand convicted, ma'am." We watched "Cry-Baby", directed by John Waters, with our friend and rockabilly expert Janelle, and there's nothing the matter with our faces - we've got character! Listen, John Waters movies are camp, trash, queer, drag, cinema classics, and "Cry-Baby" is a prime example. Johnny Depp broke out of TV jail (it was the late 80's/early 90's) and jumped onto the big screen in the first of his quirky character choices playing Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker. Cry-Baby and his gang of "drapes" are played by the coolest group of weirdos this side of "Pink Flamingos." We spend a good deal gushing over how cool the gang is, including a sizable moment dissecting Traci Lords' voluminous hairdo. Waters' knack for casting is ever-present, featuring the likes of Susan Tyrell, Iggy Pop, Joe Dallesandro, Troy Donahue, and the feature debut of one Patricia Hearst. Get transported with us to Baltimore of the early 1960's and watch Johnny Depp in 501's (and a good portion in just tighty-whities) strut around with juvenile delinquents, squares, and a cast of colorful outcasts. On January 6th, of 2020, tonight's guest, Ernie Pack, had his first Bigfoot sighting while he was in a cemetery, on top of Mitchell Hill, in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was doing a paranormal investigation there, at the time, with his wife, Denise. The area where they'd chosen to do their investigation is known by locals for being haunted. In fact, there's a legend about the area that stemmed from people hearing what they thought was a baby crying in forests around that area. The night Ernie and Denise had their first Sasquatch sighting, they were trying to locate the grave of a spirit they'd been interacting with in that area. At that time, neither Ernie nor Denise were sure if Sasquatch were even a reality. That was about to change and change in a big way. You see, after what happened to them that night, both Ernie and Denise are almost obsessed with investigating Sasquatch. Fast forward almost 6 years since the night Ernie and Denise had that experience and they've had multiple other sightings and encounters. On tonight's show, Ernie is going to tell you about them. We hope you'll tune in and listen to him do that.Ernie and Denise founded a paranormal research team called Packman Paranormal. If you'd like to visit the Packman Paranormal Facebook page, which we hope you will, please visit…https://www.facebook.com/packmanparanormal/Tonight's second guest, Wendell Burroughs, founded Foukelore Bigfoot Investigations. His interest in Sasquatch didn't really take of until he was 13 or 14 years old. He'd been squirrel hunting when he heard vocalizations he'd never heard before by a creek. Fast forward to 2014. Wendell had traveled to Fouke, Arkansas to look for the Boggy Creek monster. One of the nights Wendell and his team were there, they had just come around a bend on one of the back roads in Boggy Creek, when they saw a big, black, hairy creature that was walking on two legs cross the road and run into the woods. That was Wendell's first sighting but it wasn't his last one. He's had multiple sightings and we hope you'll tune in to listen to him share them on tonight's show.If you've had a Sasquatch sighting in Arkansas that you'd like to report to Wendell, at Foukelore Bigfoot Investigations, please visit the Foukelore Bigfoot Investigations Facebook Page…https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090678214926To visit the Arkansas Bigfoot Cartel Facebook Page, please go to…https://www.facebook.com/groups/546090742639237/If you've had a Bigfoot sighting and would like to be a guest, on the show, please go to https://MyBigfootSighting.com and let us know. What happens when we swap our desperate (conditioned) grasping for certainty for a curious(ly awkward) embrace of confusion? This episode invites you into a radical reframing of confusion—not as weakness or failure, but as an appropriate, even necessary response to our rapidly changing world. Cultural messaging tells us confusion should be avoided, fixed, overcome. That if we're confused, somehow we're failing life! Abso-f$%king-lutely not.Through personal stories, practical guidance, poetry, and more, let's illuminate how confusion can lead us to clarity, self-trust, and connection when approached more consciously. You'll learn to differentiate between conscious confusion and unconscious rumination, with tools to lovingly disrupt those unconscious loops. Releasing certainty and embracing conscious confusion is a practice to disorient us from the systems designed to keep us good consumers and bad rebels.Learn more about Dana & Leah's Fall Equinox retreat in Joshua Tree! Season 9, Episode 14 (Originally released on September 8th, 2025) Welcome back to the Shame List Picture Show. On this episode, I'm joined by Nick Richards, former co-host of the show. After a recent meeting with John Waters, Nick and I decided it was the perfect time to sit down for a Waters double feature. We're talking about Cry-Baby (1990) and Serial Mom (1994). Cry-Baby is Waters' take on 1950s teen rebel movies, starring Johnny Depp as a leather-jacketed heartthrob. Serial Mom features Kathleen Turner as Beverly Sutphin, a seemingly perfect suburban mom with a very dark secret. Nick and I get into what makes these two films stand out in Waters' career, how they balance camp and satire, and why his work continues to leave such a lasting impression.Version 1.0.0 Be sure to check out our Patreon at www.patreon.com/shamelistpictureshow Edited by: Austin Proctor Produced by: Michael Viers Theme Music by: Austin Proctor Opening Narration by: Nick RichardsCredits Music by: Ten-Speed Logo Design by: Amanda Viers

This year's Budapest Pride was banned in March under the Orbán government's contentious “child protection” law. Demonstrators were threatened with hefty fines for participating, and the government said it would employ facial-recognition technology to identify and potentially prosecute those who turned out to take part at the march on 28 June. Did the ban work? Not in the slightest. In fact, more people than ever in the 30-year history of Budapest Pride showed up to celebrate their rights as LGBTQ+ human beings.  The massive Pride march brought a glimmer of hope to some Hungarian citizens, including this week's guest, writer Krisztián Marton. We spoke with Krisztián about the lead-up to the event, the thrill of being on the ground last Saturday, and what might be next for Hungary, now that Viktor Orbán finally has a formidable challenger in Péter Magyar. We also chatted with Dominic's husband, Thomas Lamers, a philosopher and dramaturg who hit the streets for us, mic in hand. (Thanks, Thomas, we owe you!) Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week on Shat the Movies, we're shedding a single tear for Cry-Baby (1990)! Johnny Depp stars in John Waters' rockabilly musical that's equal parts parody, punk, and pure teen rebellion. From electric chairs to tear-streaked serenades, it's a weird, wild ride through '50s nostalgia with a twisted grin. Tune in as we dive into this cult classic and ask: was Cry-Baby cool or just confused? Plot Summary:Cry-Baby (1990), directed by John Waters, is a rockabilly musical comedy set in 1950s Baltimore, starring Johnny Depp as Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker, the leader of a group of rebellious “Drapes.” When he falls for straight-laced “Square” Allison (Amy Locane), their romance sparks a clash between their two social worlds. Packed with campy humor, catchy tunes, and Waters' signature subversive style, the film parodies teen musicals while celebrating the outsiders who refuse to conform. Writer, director, actor, and artist John Waters has been making avant-garde cinema since the 1960s. His movies have pushed boundaries and shocked audiences with their wild characters and surreal storylines, even as they offer piercing insights into popular American culture and society. While he experienced mainstream crossover success by the 1980s and into the 2000s, and has been embraced by many in the entertainment industry, John Waters is inherently an outsider –- and he wouldn't have it any other way. He is a unique, visionary queer voice in American cinema. So for one of our 2025 Pride specials, the Great Pop Culture Debate looks back on 8 of The Pope of Trash's most notable movies and attempts to name the Best John Waters Film.
