Les prochains championnats du monde sur route sont prévus fin septembre à Kigali, une grande première pour l'Afrique. Face aux meilleurs de la planète, quel rôle peuvent espérer jouer les coureurs et coureuses du continent ? De notre envoyé spécial à Kigali,Le classement final du 17ᵉ Tour du Rwanda laisse apparaître de belles promesses : 3 coureurs africains dans le top 10, un jeune Rwandais, Vainqueur Masengesho, est arrivé en 7ᵉ position. Mais aux Mondiaux, avec des Pogacar ou Vingegaard annoncés, la concurrence sera bien plus relevée. De plus, le parcours pourrait être un « mini Paris-Roubaix à l'africaine », selon David Louvet, l'entraîneur de l'équipe du Rwanda depuis 2023.Paris-Roubaix donc pour les pavés, la distance, 270 km, à cela s'ajoute l'altitude et de nombreuses ascensions. Un cocktail qui fait de ces Mondiaux les plus durs, peut-être, de l'Histoire. « Avoir un Africain à l'arrivée, c'est sûr que ça va être compliqué, juge David Louvet. Au niveau du classement, moi, je pense qu'on peut reprendre celui de l'année dernière et on aura les mêmes coureurs à l'arrivée. » C'est-à-dire Tadej Pogacar, loin devant et pas grand monde à l'arrivée.À Zurich, où s'est disputée la dernière édition, le parcours très vallonné avait eu raison des sprinteurs. Même Biniam Girmay, maillot vert du dernier Tour de France, avait jeté l'éponge en cours de route. Alors que fera l'Érythréen cette année ? Peut-il lui, le grand coureur que l'Afrique attendait, zapper les premiers Mondiaux sur le continent ? Tout est possible, disait-il à notre micro fin janvier. Aujourd'hui, l'hypothèse impasse semble la plus avancée. « On a discuté ensemble, la Fédération, le ministère des Sports et Biniam, explique Samson Solomon, sélectionneur de l'Érythrée. J'aimerais qu'il soit au départ de ces Mondiaux, le gouvernement, le peuple, tout le monde aimerait !  Mais c'est son choix. Cette course n'est pas adaptée à son profil, il n'a pas très envie de prendre le départ pour le principe, sans pouvoir terminer. Maintenant, au niveau des jeunes, surtout au niveau des dames, il y a encore des possibilités. Donc le message que moi, je vais lancer à votre micro, c'est de faire en sorte que les fédérations africaines fassent en sorte qu'il y ait beaucoup de dames qui viennent à ces Mondiaux-là. Ce sont nos Mondiaux. Ce n'est pas une affaire du Rwanda, c'est une affaire de toute l'Afrique. Il faut que l'Afrique soit présente. »Le président de la CAC dit espérer au moins 40 Fédérations africaines en septembre pour des chances de médaille minimes. Reste le plus important peut-être, l'élan.L'héritage que ces Mondiaux doivent laisser : un programme de formation supervisé par l'Union cycliste internationale vient déjà d'être inauguré au Rwanda. The Critérium du Dauphiné starts on Sunday and the Tour de Suisse takes place soon after, and both races are clear indicators that the Tour de France is now just weeks away. Top of the menu in July, of course, will be the much-hyped and long-awaited clash between the big four – Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič. But what of the Ineos Grenadiers? Knocked from their perch having dominated the Tour during the 2010s, the British team is resurgent. They may not have a rider to compare with the four main favourites, but can Jim Ratcliffe's riders be the disruptors at this year's Tour de France? We speak to Ineos team manager Steve Cummings, who highlights the untapped potential of young Spaniard Carlos Rodríguez, the ever-improving form of 2019 Tour champion Egan Bernal, who's getting back to his best following his life-threatening crash in 2022, and of the all-round strength within the British team, whose Tour line-up is set to provide an interesting combination of youth and experience. Plus, just a fortnight or so back, it was looking hightly unlikely that Jonas Vingegaard would defend his Tour de France title. However, having returned to training at home in Denmark and then in the hills of Majorca, the Visma | Lease A Bike leader has joined his teammates at an altitude training camp in the French ski resort of Tignes this week. With Vingegaard ever more likely to be on the Tour start line in Florence on 29 June, we speak to his coach Tim Heemskerk, who tells us that the Dane's training is being assessed and tweaked on a day by day basis with the aim of getting him into the right condition to be able to compete with his rivals at the at the Tour. "But," says Heemskerk, "we're respecting his recovery of course, we're not forcing anything..." Le Tour de France est de passage en Suisse. Après une arrivée à Lausanne samedi 9 juillet, le départ de la 8e étape se fait à Aigle. Siège de l'Union cycliste internationale, la petite ville proche du Lac Léman accueillera en septembre prochain le championnat de cyclisme féminin d'Afghanistan. Plusieurs dizaines de femmes ont trouvé refuge en Suisse après la prise de pouvoir des talibans en août dernier. De notre envoyé spécial à Aigle, Leur pays leur manque. Mais pour continuer à tourner les pédales en sécurité, il fallait partir. Menacées de mort, ces Afghanes n'avaient pas le choix, explique Faizi Benafsha, porte-parole du comité olympique afghan. « Les talibans ont prévenu les fédérations sportives dès leur arrivée au pouvoir que les femmes n'avaient pas le droit de faire de sport », dit Faizi Benafsha. « S'ils voient des femmes faire du vélo par exemple, ils ont expliqué que ce ne serait en aucun cas leur problème si elles disparaissaient ou si elles étaient battues. Toutes ces femmes étaient donc menacées si elles voulaient poursuivre leur sport sous un gouvernement taliban ». ► À écouter aussi : Le vélo, outil d'émancipation des femmes afghanes Opération rocambolesque Début octobre 2021, sous l'impulsion de l'Union cycliste internationale, une exfiltration est organisée. 125 personnes au total, dont une vingtaine de cyclistes et leurs familles, rejoindront la Suisse. Une opération menée à la baguette par Philippe Leuba, alors conseiller d'État du canton de Vaud en charge de l'économie, de l'innovation et du sport. « Nous avons monté une opération rocambolesque », se souvient Philippe Leuba. « Cela a pris finalement la forme d'affréter un avion qui s'est posé au nord de l'Afghanistan sans contrôle aérien. Ça a été une opération qui tenait à la fois de James Bond, puisque les passeports ont été faits dans une ambassade afghane extérieure à l'Afghanistan. Il a fallu amener ces passeports en Afghanistan alors que les frontières étaient fermées », raconte-t-il. Puis, il ajoute : « L'ancien ministre français Le Drian disait à David Lappartient (président de l'Union cycliste internationale, ndlr) “Il faut que tu m'expliques comment tu as fait parce que nous, État français, nous ne sommes pas parvenus à le faire”. » Renaissance en terre helvète Dans cet avion, parmi ces cyclistes, Masomah Ali Zada qui a ainsi pu participer aux Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo en 2021 dans l'équipe des réfugiés. Le Tour de France s'est élancé vendredi 1er juillet de Copenhague au Danemark. Les coureurs arrivent en France ce mardi 4 juillet. Le président de l'Union cycliste internationale (UCI), David Lappartient, s'est confié au sujet de cette édition 2022.

Au mois d'août dernier, le président de l'Union Cycliste Internationale, épaulé par le conseiller d'Etat Vaudois Philippe Leuba, s'engageait personnellement dans l'évacuation de 125 ressortissant et ressortissantes afghans, dont 38 sont arrivés en Suisse. Parmi elles, des cyclistes qui sont présentes au Centre Mondial du Cyclisme à Aigle et vivent maintenant dans le Canton de Vaud. Pour ponctuer cette actions exceptionnelle, l'UCI va organiser le 23 octobre prochain, les championnats d'Afhanistant de cyclisme sur route femmes. Entretien avec David Lappartient, Philippe Leuba, Rebecca Ruiz et Benafsha Faizi, collaboratrice de l'équipe média de la fédération cycliste d'Afghanistan, porte-parole également du comité olympique afghan, qui faisait partie des personnes évacuées.

With World Cup fever gripping France it was somehow appropriate on the day of the semi-final between France and Belgium that two Frenchmen and two Belgians formed the four-man break on stage four of the Tour.
