Episode 46: Can you harness capitalism to accelerate health equity? Squire Servance of Syridex Bio says yes

Health equity is a hot topic these days. There's no question that certain populations have better and more frequent access to healthcare – not to mention sometimes dramatic variations in the quality of care. Health inequities drive roughly $320 billion in annual healthcare spending – money that could be better spent elsewhere if we could just figure out a way to address this issue. While there is no silver bullet to addressing health equity, Squire Servance, founder and managing partner at Syridex Bio, is trying to do his part. Syridex Bio is an impact-driven, life sciences-focused firm investing in therapies that address the needs of underserved communities. Squire joins Justin for the final episode of Definitively Speaking to explore the social and economic costs of healthcare disparity, the challenge of developing treatments for underserved groups, and why investing in health equity is both good business sense and just plain good. Justin and Squire discuss the root causes of health inequity in the U.S. and examine how Syridex Bio harnesses capitalism to develop treatments for patient demographics that the market has largely ignored. They discuss the challenge of securing market access, the push-pull relationship between on- and off-patent drugs, and why it's worth being optimistic about health equity. Plus, Justin says goodbye to the incredible guests, listeners, and production team of Definitively Speaking as we bring this edutaining series to a close. Most everyone agrees that basic healthcare is a human right, but having a right to care doesn't necessarily make it easily accessible or reliable for everyone. Charles Nader, CEO and founder of Doc.com, is on a mission to deliver free basic healthcare to the entire world using a foundational philosophy of access, analytics, and transparency. Charles joins Justin to explain how artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, and a business model inspired by brick-and-mortar pharmacies have enabled his company to provide free virtual care consultations to more than 600,000 patients from a platform that can function in any market—all while helping doctors provide the kind of patient-centered care about which they're passionate. Justin and Charles explore the challenges of creating a single universal platform for providing telemedicine around the world: Can you sustainably generate revenue from free care services? How do you navigate regulatory differences across state and national borders? And why should providers opt for blockchain data capture over traditional EMRs? Surge in persecution in India, 30% of Americans behind on debt payments, Gender dysphoria diagnoses skyrocketing

It's Wednesday, January 17th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Surge in persecution in India The United Christian Forum reports a surge in persecution against Christians in India during the last week of 2023. Believers faced about three incidents of persecution per day during the period. Leading up to Christmas, they were already experiencing two incidents per day.  Overall, the United Christian Forum received reports of 720 incidents last year in the country.  India is ranked 11th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Pastors often face assaults from the community, as well as arrest, under anti-conversion laws across the country. British Christian teacher vindicated for street preaching on own time A Christian teacher in England  won a settlement against a high school in a religious liberty case. In 2022, the Temple Moor High School fired Andy Nix for street preaching in his spare time. He challenged the school's decision with the help of Christian Legal Centre, winning a settlement worth nearly $9,000. Nix said, “How the police have treated street preachers [here] in recent years has been appalling. The two-tiered policing against Christian and conservative beliefs I believe has encouraged young people to believe street preachers are fair game who they can attack and discriminate against at will. The experience has, however, helped me grow in resilience and reminded of the cost involved in following Jesus Christ.” Jesus said in Luke 14:27-28, “Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be My disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?” Gender dysphoria diagnoses skyrocketing In the United States, gender dysphoria diagnoses are up over recent years, according to a report by Definitive Healthcare. The pro-transgender group reports the identification of gender confusion increased significantly across 49 states between 2018 and 2022. Virginia led with a 274% increase. A third of U.S. states saw increases of over 100%. South Dakota was the only state that had a decrease, seeing a 23% drop in gender confusion diagnoses. Transgender mutilating surgeries were also up since 2018. Nearly 20 states have now enacted bans on the surgeries as well as transgender drugs. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Tax breaks for parents and business owners Bipartisan lawmakers in Congress announced a deal Tuesday to expand the child tax credit and give businesses some tax breaks as well. The deal would increase the maximum credit per child from $1,600 to $2,000 until 2025.  It would also bring back several tax write-offs that businesses enjoyed under the Trump administration. 30% of Americans behind on debt payments A new study from LendingTree found that nearly 30% of Americans across the country's 100 largest cities were behind on debt payments last year. Consumers across the south, as well as younger generations, were the most likely to be behind on debt payments.  In total, American households increased their debt to over $17 trillion last year. The leading debt categories included mortgages, credit cards, and student loans. U.S. centenarians quadrupled The U.S. Census Bureau projects the number of Americans aged 100 and older will quadruple over the next 30 years. There are now about 100,000 people in the U.S. over 100 years old, known as centenarians. That's up from 37,000 in 1990. By 2054, that number could reach 420,000.  Currently, 78% of centenarians are women, and 77% are white.  The U.S. centenarian population is the second highest in the world behind Japan with 146,000 people over 100. Correction on number of Evangelical NFL quarterbacks Yesterday, The Worldview reported that three-quarters of the National Football League quarterbacks are Evangelical Christians. While that was the case back in 2015, today 53% of NFL quarterbacks are Evangelicals. A September 6, 2023 ChristianLeader.com article identifies 17 Evangelical quarterbacks on the 32 National Football League teams. More two-parent families And finally, the Institute for Family Studies reports that there is a resurgence of two-parent families.  Based on U.S. Census Bureau data, the percentage of U.S. children living with two parents was 71% last year. That's up from 67% in 2005. Before 2005, the proportion of children with two parents fell drastically from 87% in the 1960s. Along with the resurgence of two-parent families, the percentage of children with a single parent was 25% last year, down from 28% in 2005.  The Institute for Family Studies noted, “There seem to be growing numbers of young adults, in all racial and ethnic groups, who realize the economic, educational, and emotional benefits of marriage for themselves and their future children.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, January 17th in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Hospitals might seem like the quintessential healthcare setting, but only about 11% of care episodes actually occur in these facilities, according to the National Institutes of Health. The other 89% of care is delivered through a complex continuum of outpatient settings that span everything from primary care offices to ambulatory surgery centers to long-term care facilities, just to name a few locations. Brian Drozdowicz, SVP and GM of acute and payor markets at PointClickCare, joins Justin to chat about the technological, legal, and incentive barriers to coordinating value-based care (VBC) across the healthcare ecosystem. Brian draws from more than two decades of leadership experience in healthcare tech to share his perspectives on VBC: how accountable care organizations are using data to improve outcomes at lower cost, why the rest of the industry always seems to be just one year away from activating VBC, and why 2024 may be the year that VBC truly, finally takes off. Justin and Brian ask the questions that may hold the keys to unlocking VBC: Who's responsible for providing visibility into patients' journeys—payors, providers, or the patients themselves? What's the secret to HCIT interoperability? Can healthcare learn anything from the financial industry's approach to data privacy? Why are payors suddenly open to sharing data? Dr. Gail Gazelle, a physician coach, author, and Harvard assistant professor, joins Justin to explain why healthcare professionals are so prone to burnout and how they can – and must – preserve their mental well-being. Dr. Gazelle describes the four signs of burnout, the systemic factors that contribute to it, and how mindfulness can help physicians avoid handing over their happiness. Is it time for a medical Manhattan Project? In this special episode, Justin is joined by Jonathan Bush, founder and CEO of Zus Health, and Robert Musslewhite, Definitive Healthcare CEO, to debate the future of the US healthcare system – what's broken and who has what responsibility to fix it. Justin, Jonathan, and Robert discuss who's really at-fault – is it the government, the payors, or the healthcare systems themselves? One thing's for sure: it's not the patient's fault – or is it? They debate ideas for aligning payors, providers, employers, and patients. And they discuss the industry's long, winding, and never-ending road to IT interoperability, and why that interoperability might not be the panacea that so many people think it could be. Justin, Robert, and Jonathan openly wonder whether Meaningful Use and the “EMR-ification” of American healthcare was successful or not, and analyze how the emerging era of virtual care is going to change healthcare as we know it. At the end of their discussion, Jonathan lays out his vision for the hospital of the future – one that doesn't even require a physical building to operate. Jason Krantz started his first company in 2000, which was an amazing year to found a business followed by 3 very tough years for early-stage businesses. That environment forced Jason to build a capital efficient, bootstrapped business from day 1. When considering his 2nd act, Jason identified 3 factors that he felt would reshape the healthcare industry:   An explosion of data as organizations adopted electronic health record systems for the first time. The passing of the affordable care act. Tremendous market consolidation.   Jason decided Definitive Healthcare would be the GPS system for the healthcare universe. Definitive helps customers understand how all the organizations in the industry are related and how patients flow through the entire healthcare ecosystem.   Example - Definitive helps life science companies take new drugs to market in a more effective & efficient manner (lower time and cost).    Today Definitive has > $200M in ARR with plans to reach over $1bn over the next 5-7 years. After spending the last 12 years building data sets that are not available anywhere else and investing in data science to draw out detailed market insights from this data, Definitive also has an enviable moat as their product is incredibly difficult to replicate.    Jason joins Scott Britton and Andrei Newman on the Built By Humans podcast. Here are some key takeaways from the conversation: Scaling a business is incredibly challenging. What is interesting is that the challenges are not necessarily related or transferable across stages. Your challenges with 100 employees are different from 200, and different from what you will face at 300. As a founder, you must constantly evolve to be effective in each phase.  Data businesses take a long time to build but the reward can be very large if you aggregate a dataset that is truly unique. Data companies must invest in having strategic (market insights) and tactical (contact info) data if they want to drive high user engagement. Founders who understand the power of capital efficiency and invest in it early will have a ton of leverage in future fundraising conversations.   It is quite common for companies to drastically underestimate the size of their market. It takes time and effort to properly identify and carve out your addressable market.

From hiring to retention, from burn-out to innovative benefits, employment in healthcare is never going to look the same. The Great Resignation threatens to leave the healthcare industry understaffed and underpowered for years.
