Ever wonder why some people who get exposed to colds or the flu get really ill while others experience mild symptoms or don't get sick at all? Fortunately, today's guest is here to provide answers to this mystery. An authority on the microbiome, Dr. Robynne Chutkan, is here to tell us all about the remarkable flora residing in our intestines and how feeding it the right foods can promote health, prevent disease, and even help us with our weight. Dr. Chutkan is a board-certified gastroenterologist at Georgetown Hospital, founder of the Digestive Center for Wellness, and author of the books Gutbliss, The Microbiome Solution, The Bloat Cure, and her most recent book, The Anti-Viral Gut, where she tackles the complexities of intestinal bacteria and how it relates to our immune system. She's been a featured expert on several media outlets, including The Today Show and CBS This Morning.    If you're a person interested in strengthening your immune system, or you've experienced digestive troubles, or you're just human, then this episode is definitely for you!   “For a vaginal birth, as the baby's head crowns, it turns posteriorly to face the tush, and it does that to swallow a mouthful of microbes because that area between the vaginal opening and the anus, that area we call the perineum, is full of microbes. It is one of the most microbially rich parts of the body. So, as the baby is coming out, it swallows a mouthful of the mother's microbes, and those important microbes become the founding species for the baby's microbiome. Babies that are born vaginally have that benefit. Babies that are born via C-section don't get that opportunity, and as a result, they're colonized with hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus.” - Dr. Robynne Chutkan   What we discuss in this episode: - What the microbiome is and how it relates to overall human health - Viruses and human DNA - The microbiome and immunity - Important tips for expecting mothers - Causes of intestinal permeability - The benefits of being in nature on the microbiome  - Tips to improve your microbiome  - The effects of stress on the gut and immunity   Resources: - Website: Dr. Robynne Chutkan - https://robynnechutkan.com/ - Books: Books by Robynne Chutkan - https://robynnechutkan.com/books/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gutbliss/?hl=en - BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough: bioptimizers.com/switch4good - http://bioptimizers.com/switch4good - Vote for the Switch4Good podcast here: https://bit.ly/s4gpodcast   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. Your gastrointestinal tract contains around three pounds of microbes - some good and some bad. When your gut is healthy, the bad bugs are kept in check, and the good bugs serve as internal workhorses for digestion and short-chain fatty acid creation, they also release GABA and other neurotransmitters, and fend off pathogens. When things are out of balance, irritable bowel, leaky gut, gas, bloating, and disease can occur. Gastrointestinal problems affect as many as one in five people, so a happy belly is something we all need to cultivate. In this episode, gastroenterologist, Robynne Chutkan, MD, shares her latest research. Ever wonder why some people who get exposed to colds or the flu get really ill while others experience mild symptoms or don't get sick at all? Fortunately, today's guest is here to provide answers to this mystery. An authority on the “microbiome,” Dr. Robynne Chutkan is here to tell us all about the remarkable flora residing in our intestines, and how feeding it the right foods can promote health, prevent disease, and even help us with our weight. “For a vaginal birth, as the baby's head crowns, it turns posteriorly to face the tush, and it does that to swallow a mouthful of microbes, because that area between the vaginal opening and the anus, that area we call the perineum, is full of microbes. It is one of the most microbially rich parts of the body. So as the baby is coming out, it swallows a mouthful of the mother's microbes, and those important microbes become the founding species for the baby's microbiome. Babies that are born vaginally have that benefit. Babies that are born via C-section don't get that opportunity, and as a result, they're colonized with hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus.” - Dr. Robynne Chutkan What we discuss in this episode: What the microbiome is and how it relates to overall human health Viruses and human DNA The microbiome and immunity Important tips for expecting mothers Causes of intestinal permeability The benefits of being in nature on the microbiome Tips to improve your microbiome The effects of stress on the gut and immunity Resources: Website: Dr. Robynne Chutkan Books: Books by Robynne Chutkan Instagram: //www.instagram.com/gutbliss/?hl=en The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! Multiple studies have now confirmed a dramatic link between the health of our microbiome—the trillions of bacteria that live in our digestive tract—and the strength of our immune system. Low-fiber diets, limited exposure to nature, and overzealous use of pharmaceuticals have messed up our microbiome, making many of us more susceptible to viruses than we naturally should be. But the good news is that unlike our genes, our microbiome is constantly evolving, offering a pathway back to health for those who are suffering, and proven protection for those who want to stay well. In The Anti-Viral Gut, Dr. Robynne Chutkan explains this groundbreaking research and offers a prescriptive plan for anyone trying to avoid or recover from a viral illness to rehab their gut microbes and restore their health. Dr. Robynne Chutkan explains how the standard Western diet and our super-sanitized lifestyle are starving our microbes, depleting the “good bugs” that are crucial for keeping us healthy, and encouraging overgrowth of exactly the wrong types of bacteria.         However,  Dr. Chutkan explains, there are effective lifestyle and diet changes we can make to reverse this damage. Dr. Chutkan has helped thousands of patients suffering from a disordered microbiome with her comprehensive Live Dirty, Eat Clean Plan, designed to remove damaging medications and foods, replace important bacteria that have been lost, and restore health.  The MicrobiomeSolution offers: a microbiome overview, nourishing recipes, questions for your doctor, preventative and recovery health tips, and the next frontier for a severely troubled microbiome—the stool transplant. This is the first book to provide a practical, effective plan for replenishing and optimizing the vital ecosystem in our gut. For our first episode of the season, I'm super thrilled to announce a conversation with one of my gut heroes, the incredible gastroenterologist, Dr. Robynne Chutkan! In this episode, we cover what an integrative approach to gut health actually looks like. (Spoiler alert: it means using nutrition, movement, and stress management in addition to appropriate medications—instead of shunning one for the other.) We also talk about what you need to make good poops, Dr. Chutkan's opinion on probiotics, and the role of the microbiome in health! About Dr. Robynne Chutkan: Dr. Chutkan is an integrative gastroenterologist and the author of Gutbliss, The Microbiome Solution and The Bloat Cure. Educated at Yale and Columbia, she's on faculty at Georgetown Hospital—and is the founder of the Digestive Center for Wellness and Gutbliss.com. Her expertise includes the microbiome, autoimmune diseases, and gut disorders in women. An avid (but not so flexible) yogi, runner, and squash player, she's a passionate advocate for more dirt, sweat, and vegetables. On this episode we chat about: How to take a truly integrative approach that includes nutrition, movement, and stress management for gut health. Understanding when medications are important for digestive conditions How a good poop is similar to a diamond! (yep, tune in to hear Dr. Chutkan's reasons why!) The four ‘C's of a good poop: Colour, Carat, Clarity (why seeing tiny bits of plant material in it is a good sign!), and Cut (you want the whole log in the bowl). Why “hard to digest” foods are actually a good thing. What exactly IS the microbiome—and why we're just starting to understand its impact for health. How environmental factors can impact the expression of our genes (i.e. switch good and bad genes on or off!) Why living ‘dirty' is important for your microbiome Why you don't actually want to ‘boost' your immune system Probiotics versus diet for a strong microbiome Learned something new? Have questions? When it comes to healing your gut, getting rid of bloat and constipation, changing your gastrointestinal bacteria or any other digestive topic, I consider Dr. Robynne Chutkan to be one of the smartest women on the face of planet. So basically, she really loves talking about poop. Her latest book, , is a deep dive into how and why some of our modern day living is actually causing more problems than we realized to the tiny microbes that keep us happy and healthy– household cleaners, air conditioning, processed food. In that book, she talks about eating poop, timing your probiotics, getting a dog to lick your face, eating dirt and more. In her other book, , she looks at less of the science and more at the practical nature of our bloated bellies, talking about how bloat isn’t just bad Chinese food, but also things like codeine in cough syrup and dehydration and birth control pills and GMOs. “There is no question that the number one food to eat to grow a good gut garden is plant fiber, and there really can be no debate about that.”Robynne Chutkan, MDOur bodies are comprised of about ten trillion cells. But our microbiome — all the bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live in or on our bodies – outnumber human cells by a factor of 10. Therefore, it can be said that we are far more microorganism than human. We choose to believe that we are sentient beings, responsible for our health, moods and decisions.
