What if the Holy Spirit truly served as the Comforter and Counselor? When we read our Bibles, that what we would expect. However, when we live our lives, the transforming power of the Holy Spirit is often diminished, and we carry wounds and hurts for decades. While serving as a biblical professor at a large Evangelical University, Dr. Don love began to ask the Lord to show him if there could be more to his walk and life. Why did he not see the fruit of the spirit in his character? These prayers began a transformation in Don's life as he learned to seek Jesus in a much more intentional and intimate way through prayer. Today Don and his wife Jennifer lead a ministry called Pray Through It, where they help lead followers of Jesus to experience the transforming healing power of the Holy Spirit through focused prayer. On this episode we talk about Don's journey to experiencing the healing power of prayer. He shares the biblical basis for prayer having more power than we typically experience. And then Don leads us in a time of prayer as we ask God to reveal the condition of our heart. Dr. Don Love is the director of Pray Through It and the host of the weekly podcast Unquenchable: Biblical Theology, Listening Prayer, and Christian Living Before leading Pray Through It, Dr. Love was a pioneer in online education, designing some of the first online classes for Liberty University. He spent almost two decades as a Biblical Studies professor and during that time, he taught over 10,000 students. He holds BS in Biblical Studies and Youth Ministries, an MAR in Church Ministries, a Masters of Divinity (MDiv), a Masters of Theology (ThM), and a PhD in Biblical Theology. He and his wife Jen co-lead Prayer Through It and unquenchable while raising their children in Lynchburg, VA. In episode 271, you'll hear why casting vision is a powerful tool that is underutilised by many preachers, and Todd Peebles is going to give you some very practical steps to start. Before that you will hear about Praying Over Your PassageTodd shares his approach to preparing for a sermon, which involves praying over the passage he'll be teaching on. He explains how this practice helps him to connect with God and gain a deeper understanding of the text, enabling him to communicate its message more effectively. Planning a Preaching ScheduleTodd shares his process for planning out a preaching schedule months in advance, including how he selects topics and Scripture passages to teach on. He emphasizes the importance of seeking God's guidance and being open to change as the schedule unfolds.Casting Vision for the Church Casting a vision" for a church is the process of defining and communicating a clear and compelling picture of what the church could and should be in the future. It involves sharing a vision of what the church can achieve, what it stands for, and where it is heading. It is a critical process for churches because it helps to provide direction, focus, and motivation for the congregation. One of the most significant benefits of casting a vision for a church is that it provides a clear sense of direction and purpose. It helps the members of the church understand where they are heading and why they are doing what they do. This clarity can be motivating and inspiring, helping to unite the congregation around a shared vision and a common goal. Todd helps us think through this process together. Todd was born in Stuttgart Arkansas in January 1970. His parents are Phyllis & Allen Peebles. As a child, he was privileged to be an Army Brat. This meant he got to live in some different places. In this episode of Louisiana NOW, we look back at the final anti-racism module presented to the Louisiana Conference from Project Curate — a non-profit that works with religious and community organizations to support collaborative responses to intersectional issues of inequality and injustice. The Blackness 101 module helped us explore racial categorizing as a tool of power from the perspective of the black experience. We discussed essential conversation markers and how anti-blackness is a form atonement. We began to recognize the systems of oppression, our complicity in them, and ways of finding freedom. We are joined by Brandi Holmes who focuses her work on various black liberation struggles, but especially the struggles of black girls and women. She is a noted social activist, community organizer, and strategist, dedicated to policy and criminal justice reform. Also joining us is Dr. Biko Mandela Gray, a professor of Religion at Syracuse University, and a community advocate. Dr. Gray’s research interests operate at the intersection of religion, embodiment, and subjectivity—all of which cohere around a central question: if we took our bodies seriously, how might we think about our relationship to ourselves, others, and the world? And our third guest is Rev. Dr. Cleve Tinsley, co-managing director of Project Curate. Dr. Tinsley is a scholar of religion and Black Studies. He earned his MA and PhD in religion from Rice University. Dr. Tinsley is a Baptist minister who holds a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has extensive experience as an organizer, institution-builder, manager, and consultant for churches and community organizations. These webinars were aimed at imagining, striving for, and living in a better world wherein justice, mercy, humility, and love are not just aspirations, but assumptions within our community ethics. How does a young man growing up in an “under resourced” community make sense of the mystical experiences that began at the age of 14 years old spending time with friends? By making his exploration of African American religion and theology the center point of his spiritual and academic development – and helping others through the process. This episode explores Cleve's development and the dissertation that has provided him the container to examine his thinking as it relates to those thoughts and thinkers who have influenced him. At Princeton Theological Seminary, Cleve, began to expand his understanding of the great thinkers within Black Theology and African American Cultural studies including people such as Hortense Spillers, W.E.B. Du Bois, Cornell West, James Cone, Martin Luther King Jr, and others. Cleve provides a deeper understanding of Black critical thought, and how this intellectual tradition has influenced religion and culture. Interwoven into this rich conversation, we also discuss personal symbols for Cleve such as how N.W.A provided a means by which Cleve, as a young guy, began to understand his cultural upbringing and the basic struggle as an adolescent boy – in particular what factors shaped his understanding of himself, of his religion, and of his community. Bio: Cleve V. Tinsley IV is an ordained Baptist minister, scholar of religion and African American culture, and community social justice strategist based in Houston, TX. He is currently the Co-Managing Partner of projectCURATE—a non-profit social impact enterprise and intersectional justice collaborative—and a PhD candidate in the Department of Religion at Rice University. Cleve's research focuses on critical understandings of the wider social scientific and historical approaches to the study of religion in general and African-American religion in particular. His current research explores the relationship between religion, black freedom struggles, and African-American formations in America and argues for more expansive sociological approaches to studying the meaning and nature of black religious identity given the complexity of religion and spirituality in the lives of African Americans today. Cleve also works as a research fellow in the Religion and Public Life Program (RPLP) at Rice and, prior to his doctoral training, earned his Master of Divinity (MDiv) at Princeton Theological Seminary. Cleve has worked in the past as a pastor and consultant for several churches and educational non-profit organizations in the US South and on the East Coast. www.projectcurate.org Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com Band of the week: Abstract Rude and Tribe Unique https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/p-a-i-n-t/306865459 Learn more about this project at: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks
Darin chats with his friend and college roommate Dr. Steve Lawson, a pastor, speaker, entrepreneur, and athlete. Dr. Lawson is a Crossfit athlete and Level 1 coach as well as a gymnastics coach. He began coaching gymnastics while he was still in college, and eventually started his own manufacturing business, Progressive Sports and Fitness, building trampolines, tumbling floors, and other equipment for gymnastic competitions. His company's equipment is can be seen at every Power Tumbling World Championships as well as the USA National Championships. After a decade in the manufacturing business, Dr. Lawson decided to plant a church in his hometown of Greenville, TX and spent the next 17 years as a pastor. During this time he earned a Master of Divinity (MDIV) from The King’s University, followed that with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Amberton University and finally a Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL) from Regent University. His education combined with his experience as a pastor took him deep into the concept of emotional intelligence, and how to cultivate it. He now gives lectures and leadership seminars on emotional intelligence around the world. Dr. Lawson has authored three books: Giant Killers Marriage is Worth Fighting For The Prevailing Marriage Those of us who have trained hard for a long time know that hard training refines us in more ways than just the physical. Doing hard things transforms our mind as well, including our ability to process emotions. But it works the other way too... we bring our behaviors and the way we carry ourselves into the gym, and those elements are reflected in our workouts. So it's important to actively grow our emotional intelligence, improve our self-esteem, and learn how to foster better relationships... just like we grow our strength. In this interview we talk with Scott Alan Roberts about his latest work, The Secret History of the Reptilians, which traces the role of the serpent in our history and the different ways that cultures have viewed reptiles. We will discuss the current Reptilian ET beliefs, and get his thoughts on David Icke. We also discuss his previous work, The Rise and Fall of the Nephilim, and his new upcoming book on the Exodus. Scott is the founder and publisher of Intrepid Magazine (www.intrepidmag.com), a journal dedicated to politics, science, UFOs, unexplained phenomena and alternative fringe theories. He is an accomplished illustrator and writer of fiction and non-fiction occupationally hovering in the advertising ghettos of Minneapolis & Saint Paul, Minnesota. He has been interviewed on scores of radio shows, is a former political talk radio show host and was editor-in-chief of SyFy's Ghost Hunters official publication, TAPS ParaMagazine. Scott attended bible college and theological seminary, pursuing his Masters in Divinity (Mdiv) while working as a youth director. During his time in academia, he focused on his personal passions for history, theater and art. His religious studies were an obvious springboard for his continuing interest in spirituality, and his research of paranormal phenomena expanded throughout the subsequent years. After his ministerial education, Scott's career took a sharp left turn, and he went on to spend the next two-and-a-half decades as a creative ad man. He launched a small comic book publishing effort, Bent Nail Comix, writing and illustrating stories, some of which were eventually pitched for animated television. He co-created the highly successfulAncient Heroes trading card series, and began development on a line of young readers books. He authored and illustrated his first historical novel, The Rollicking Adventures of Tam O'Hare (www.tamohare.com), an anthropomorphized historical novel set in Tudor England, Ireland, and Scotland, which garnered broad attention with teen and college readers. Scott considers himself a contemplative, spiritual man of consideration who sees intelligence, wit, justice and touch as quantifiable necessities. He values a good pipe, a stout pint, and considers himself a purist when it comes to single malt highland Scotch - which he deems not a tool of inebriation, but rather an enlightened repast to be shared with colleagues and like-minded pedagogues of philosophy and hob-knobbing banter. He does not shy away from a good fight – whether academic or existential - and has had a few classical brawls in his day. However, in keeping with what he sees as his paradoxical nature, Scott prefers employing words over weapons, wit above profanity, spirituality above religion, stalwartness above inconstancy. “As I grow older,” Roberts says, “my jaded cynicism is wholly tempered by my desire to not become an ass.” His scholarship is true, his humor is wry, his mind is fertile, and his love is deep. Scott lives with his wife and children, just across the Minnesota border in rural Wisconsin, where he remains an avid Vikings fan; a stranger in a strange land. Hosted on Acast.
