In this episode join us in conversation with Sally Cartwright.    Saly started diving 1993 after an injury on a  mountaineering trip. After a bet with a local dive club and a successful try dive, Sally took up the challenge and a new life direction.  Early into her diving career she found herself using mixed gas and rebreathers.  Finding herself at the bottom of Dorothea Quarry  at 107m or scouring the seabed looking for new shipwrecks of the English Channel pretty much became a way of life for Sally as it does many others.   Sally became involved with diving agencies and then went back to school and qualified to teach TDI Inspiration rebreathers.  However, she decided that this career was not for her and started to investigate hyperbaric medicine. During the pandemic her ambulance work and diving world collided and she started working for Midlands Diving Chamber, firstly as a Chamber Attendant and progressed into management.   Sally has worked on some high-profile projects including the Bluebird Project that involved raising Bluebird, Donald Campbell's water speed record boat and Donald himself from the depths of Coniston Water in 2001. Since then, the team have restored Bluebird and successfully ran her on the Isle of Bute in 2018.   Sally champions the diving industry's support in all that she has achieved  The diving industry is not a rich one so any help just boosts morale and spreads the word what a wonderful sport we have, especially in the UK.   Sally is well known for organising social diving trips and now on the road to recovery after knee surgery is looking forward to getting back out in the deep again.   https://www.midlandsdivingchamber.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/sally.cartwright.568   The BiG Scuba Podcast is brought to you by Narked at 90.   “Beyond Technical”   Narked at 90    If you are thinking of moving across to tech diving or completely new to diving, Narked at 90 can advise and guide on the best equipment and set up for your personal or commercial requirements  https://www.narkedat90.com/           There is currently a code for you to use for purchases and the code is  BIGSCUBA2024.   Please follow Narked at 90 on Facebook :  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100065027019650   We are on Instagram                     @thebigscuba   We are on Facebook                      @thebigscuba   We are in LinkedIn                          https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian%F0%9F%A6%88-last-325b101b7/ The BiG Scuba Website                  www.thebigscuba.com Amazon Store :                                https://www.amazon.co.uk/shop/thebigscuba   Visit   https://www.patreon.com/thebigscubapodcast and subscribe - Super quick and easy to do and it makes a massive difference. Over in Burma, missionary Adoniram Judson was lying in a foul jail with 32 lbs. of chains on his ankles, his feet bound to a bamboo pole. A fellow prisoner said, "Dr. Judson, what about the prospect of the conversion of the heathen?", with a sneer on his face. His instant reply was, "The prospects are just as bright as the promises of God." The Presbyterian Advance Sir Wilfred Grenfell, medical missionary in Labrador, found himself adrift on an ice flow, headed out to sea. He mercifully killed his dogs, made a coat out of their hides, put up a distress flag, and lay down and slept. Later he said, "There was nothing to fear. I had done all I could, the rest lay in God's hands." Donald Campbell, Daniel, Decoder of Dreams, p. 20. The worldliness which Christians are to avoid can take either a religious or a secular shape. So we are to differ from non-Christians not only in our devotions, but also in our ambitions. In particular, Christ changes our attitude to material wealth and possessions. It is impossible to worship both God and money; we have to choose between them. Secular people are preoccupied with the quest for food, drink and clothing. Christians are to be free of these self-centred material anxieties and instead to give themselves to the spread of Gods rule and Gods righteousness. That is to say, our supreme ambition is to be the glory of God, and neither our own glory nor even our own material well-being. It is a question of what we seek first. John Stott

The theme for Corridors of Power is called “My Favourite Motorsport story”. Donald Campbell's nephew Don Wales tells us about the controversy that has blown up since the wreck of his water speed record breaking Bluebird K7 was raised from the bed of Lake Coniston in Cumbria. There is now a bitter dispute involving family members, the local museum and the man who raised the boat from the depths.

What if Ben Affleck amid "misses" Forces of Nature and Bounce, made a heist movie that had plot twists on top of its plot twists, featuring an unhinged Gary Sinise and a young (crazy) Charlize Theron? A recipe for success you might think, but Reindeer Games got blasted by critics, and audiences and it bombed financially. Where did it go wrong? It had a great writer and an all-time director John Frankenheimer. Is it time to re-assess Reindeer Games or does it deserve its spot in the garbage heap of 90's cinema? Not too many movies out there featuring Jet Li in dreadlocks, but this is where we find ourselves. Even though The One (2001) is rated very low by critics, some swear this is an awesome movie. The movie made us laugh, we're just not sure it was supposed to. It also features one of the best Jet Li fights we've ever seen. We go scene by scene and answer the important questions - how did Jet Li get with Carla Gugino? Why is the only thing different in each parallel universe his hairdo? Why does Jason Statham have hair, and why can't he fight in this? We'll pull it all apart, and then give out some awards, including our worst actor award, the "Steve Seagal" Trash Can Full of Dirt. 629: Ideas To Rediscover Joy At Work

My Business On Purpose

For many, work has become an unavoidable and sustained pot hole along the chaotic highway of our day to day that knocks the alignment from the goal of peace each of us has in life. Beckoning a variety of responses from the menu of emotions available to us throughout the day, we respond to life's potholes with entitlement and exasperation feeling betrayed when we get thrown off track.   We want happiness, when truthfully, we expect a nonlinear annoyance to be the theme of our Monday through Friday. It would serve us well to contemplate a novel concept; happiness is spasmodic, temporary; joy is manufactured and intentional. Canadian psychologist Philip Brickman and American psychologist Donald Campbell coined the aptly named phrase “hedonic treadmill” in the 1980s.  It is the thought that happiness is fleeting, always seeing it in the short jolts by which it comes, and yet always looking for more.  The elation or misery that comes typically returns to a baseline emotion quickly. The happiness we seek in our work will under-satisfy because the treadmill of life marches on at a steady pace forcing us to continue moving on rarely allowing us to sit in those happy moments for long.   Each moment ceases quickly to become embraced with gratitude in favor of being installed as a new level of expectation. Jean-Jacques Rousseau warns that “these conveniences (think happy moments) by becoming habitual had almost entirely ceased to be enjoyable… men were unhappy to lose them without being happy to possess them.” In our work at Business On Purpose with heroic business owners, we've achieved a notable level of chaos-busting tools and coaching, and yet a failure that we have had since we started in 2015 is building an incentive compensation structure and coaching module that works for everyone.  We have never seen more than 10-15% of employees offer a sincere and non-expectant thank you for additional compensation received (bonuses, etc.) Why? Maybe the joy of possessing them was immediately rooted out by the numbness of expecting them. Employees are hoping for a “hit” when they get the next pay bump or are lauded with the next award.  It wears quickly and returns to baseline leaving us in need of more.  More hits.  More substance.  More of something to numb the reality I feel that you cannot see… the reality that I live with internally but rarely share with you.   Recently, we began asking a new question during our every-other-weekly individual check-in with team members:  Can you describe a hard moment that you experienced these past two weeks, and how you found joy in that moment? We focus on joy rather than happiness because it seems that joy is a choice, where happiness is a feeling. Feelings will not sustain because we rarely control them, choices will sustain precisely because we have the option to opt-in or out. James was the son of an Israeli Construction worker who lived in a village town between Haifa on the Mediterranean and the modern Sea of Galilee. When they were older, his brother was falsely accused of a crime, and murdered in public.  James himself was later beheaded because of his teaching and his body buried in Spain. What sort of teaching could be so vile that it results in a man's beheading? This is a paraphrased excerpt of a key element of James' message, “(In all things) joy… make it your in-front-of (first before any) thought”. That's it.   A message of actively choosing joy in front of any other response is a core part of the message that ended a notable man's life.   Joy is the “willful acceptance that a situation has brought you favor” and it brings long-term value.  Hard things bring testing, testing provides conditioning and endurance, that endurance reinvests into growth and fullness, and fullness counteracts the isolation of emptiness. Joy says, “I accept hard things to endure because the outcome is fullness.” Our modern work environment shuns and works endlessly to mitigate difficulty.  Conditioning, endurance, growth, and fullness cannot divorce themselves from quandary and perplexity.  To garner the refreshment of fullness, we must walk through the pluff mud of decomposed problems.  If problems did not exist, then there would be no need for your labor to solve those problems.   Problems are a fundamental reason for work.  Problems provide opportunity both to solve the problem and to build endurance. How do we choose joy while staring down the barrel of problems?   Joy willfully accepts the problem realizing the outcome and the long-tail value that outcome of endurance and fullness. How do you rediscover joy at work?  Begin by reframing problems as endurance-developing opportunities knowing that fullness is on its way leaving you spent and satisfied instead of exhausted and vexed.

Remembering those daredevil individuals who broke the record at speeds that were almost inconceivable at the time. Paul Tarsey talks to Don Wales about what made his grandfather, Sir Malcolm Campbell, push for ever more dangerous speeds and Danny Thompson, son of famous American record breaker Mickey Thompson, tells Jim Roller about that mysterious need for speed which drives record breakers to push newer and higher boundaries. Joe Bradley takes a look at the world's fastest karts, whilst also confessing that he doesn't understand the attraction of driving fast in a straight line. Don Wales also tells us about his uncle, Donald Campbell, and how he always asked (after almost every record run) whether his father would have been pleased, living in his shadow for all of his life. Paul Jurd fills the gaps with a history of the LSR from the late 1800s (when there was a fear that your head would be blown off at anything over 30mph!) right up to the present day. Host Paul Tarsey wonders why the LSR lost its allure in the 1970s and whether the (literally in some cases) do-or-die mindset simply went out of fashion.

Richard Byrne has spent his whole career trying to determine when animals learned to 'think.' We discuss Richard Byrne's methodology for determining which animals have what he calls 'insight' (the ability to utilize mental models) and why his methodology is awesomely Popperian. Then we go over many examples of animal behavior that can't be explained via genetic programming or trial-and-error learning. We also compare machine learning and animal intelligence and why animal intelligence is beyond our current machine learning capabilities. Karl Popper has a radical theory of 'dualistic evolution' where behavior had to evolve first before physical evolutionary changes could be taken advantage of. As part of his theory, Popper pointed out that an animal's ability to learn would be paramount to making evolution work at all -- similar to the Baldwin effect discussed in the last episode, but now for physical adaptions. This means evolution would have had intense pressure to evolve learning algorithms early in the evolutionary tree. As it turns out, Richard Byrne's work largely corroborates Popper's theory of dualistic evolution. Nearly all animals show an ability to do trial-and-error learning and this is the main source of 'animal intelligence' in the animal world. Byrne even argues that this ability to do trial-and-error learning is a form of evolution where animals let their behaviors 'die in their place' rather than having to wait for the slow biological evolutionary learning processes of the genes. We also discuss what split-brain patients might teach us about human explanations and go over examples of animal-like gene channeled learning in humans. How intelligent are animals? In this episode, we introduce our series on animal intelligence rooted primarily in the research of Richard Byrne. Richard Byrne (mentioned in Beginning of Infinity) is a first-class Popperian researcher (though he doesn't realize it). We first talk about how Bruce got interested in this subject after reading Fabric of Reality (but before reading Beginning of Infinity) and how animal intelligence is at once beyond anything we know how to program but also unbelievably unintelligent at times. We consider how the Pseudo-Deutsch Theory of Knowledge has misled the Deutsch fan community about how much of an animal's knowledge is "in its genes" as well as how many fans of Deutsch (due to the same misunderstandings) have accidentally fallen into Lamarkism because they don't understand the importance of the Baldwin effect on the evolution of animal algorithms. Donald Campbell made the bold prediction that all expansions of knowledge will be found to require the Universal Darwinism algorithm of variation and selection. In this episode, we're going to test that prediction and see if it holds up against what we currently know about Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. For example, does (apparent) knowledge created by Gradient Descent require variation and selection? Or is it really and truly inductive? Or does it just fail to create knowledge at all despite clearly creating improvements? Ultimately, we'll find that Machine Learning creates an exciting set of epistemological problems that need to be solved! In this interview, Daniel Belkin and Mitch Belkin speak with Dr. Carmody about the history of the USMLEs, the value of standardized test scores, and the arms race in the residency admissions process. They touch on conflict of interest in medical education and the rising cost of medical schools among other topics. If you enjoy this episode, please follow us on twitter @ExMedPod and subscribe to our newsletter.Who is Bryan Carmody?Dr. Bryan Carmody is a pediatric nephrologist at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He has made a name for himself as a critic of certain aspects of medical education and the residency application process. For years, he has argued that USMLE Step 1 should go pass-fail and that Step 2 CS should be eliminated — both of these events happened in the last year and a half. Campbell's law:Campbell's law comes from Donald Campbell, a psychologist and social scientist from the mid-20th century. In 1976, Campbell wrote: “Achievement tests may well be valuable indicators of general school achievement under conditions of normal teaching aimed at general competence. But when test scores become the goal of the teaching process, they both lose their value as indicators of educational status and distort the educational process in undesirable ways.” For instance, there are now entire school curricula devoted to improving test scores. This obviously wasn't the original intention. References:Radiology Journal Article: “Do residency selection factors predict radiology resident performance?” This article finds a fairly modest association between USMLE score and discordance rates between preliminary resident reads of radiologic findings and the final attending interpretation. This was for residents at UPMC. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29239834/Paul Graham: The podcast references his essay, The Lesson to Unlearn.More on Dr. Carmody:Youtube video on capping residency applications: Dr. Carmody's Youtube channelTwitter link: @jbcarmody Sheriff of Sodium blog

In The Beginning of Infinity, David Deutsch claimed that no existing evolutionary algorithm has yet created knowledge. But Karl Popper and Donald Campbell beg to differ and have argued that knowledge-creating evolutionary algorithms are ubiquitous, common, and easy to implement. Who is right? In this episode, we look at both arguments and assess them using Popper's epistemology. And along the way, we'll define the minimum requirements for an evolutionary algorithm (aka Universal Darwinism), explore what knowledge-creation is and then, finally, we'll attempt to answer the question of whether or not existing Artificial Intelligence algorithms create knowledge. Visuals are available on Youtube. This episode may benefit from seeing the visuals. For more information on Donald Campbell's theory, this blog post covers his arguments. A summary of the contradiction between David Deutsch's argument and Campbell/Popper's argument is in this blog post. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/four-strands/support

In this episode, we discuss how the work of Michael Levine intersects with the work of Raymond and Denise Noble's as well as Donald Campbell's. Levine recently did a TED talk on how the bioelectrical system between the cells is itself an evolutionary error correction process that determines the phenotype. This is a strong example of both Campbell's 'hierarchy of evolution' and the Noble's "purposiveness" in evolution where one level of the evolutionary hierarchy can cause levels below to teleologically evolve towards a purpose. The Noble's claim this refutes the classical formulation of Neo-Darwinism which they say is gene-centric. This also means we possible breakthroughs in anti-aging and medical treatments that don't require gene therapy or CRISPR. Levine's TED talk Was the Watchmaker Blind? Or Was She One-Eyed? The standard of TV is becoming a joke......there are some decent programmes but you have to search for them by skilfully trying to dodge the cookery programmes or Ant and Dec.....and the talentless Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton with their selection of stars of stage screen and scrapheap....who they "chat" to about their latest book, play or comeback and have to roar laughing at nothing....then we have multi millionaire Gary Linacre sitting with a couple of football "pundits"discussing a football match we have just watched.....yes old Gary gets millions for his weekly 90 minutes....well worth my licence fee. The song this week is one I wrote for a dear friend of mine who is sadly no longer with us...."Skiffle"John Lomax who played in one of the first local skiffle groups in the 50s and I saw them on stage in 1958 which was the first time I heard an electric guitar played live......I met John many years later and we became good friends....John was featured in the TV series "Days That Shook The World" which was about the fatal water speed record attempt by Donald Campbell of which John had rare cine footage....this song was my tribute to him and actually got us a gig in Finland where we went and performed at their national skiffle convention ....so here it is "The Story of Skiffle" sung by John Lomax

How will the role of data science in democracy be transformed as software expands the public’s ability to conduct our own experiments at scale? In the 1940s-70s, debates over authoritarian uses of statistics led to new paradigms in social psychology, management theory, and policy evaluation. Today, large-scale social experiments and predictive modeling are reviving these debates. Technology platforms now conduct hundreds of undisclosed experiments per day on pricing and advertising, and the algorithms that shape our social lives remain opaque to to the public. Democratic methods for data science may offer an alternative to this corporate libertarian paternalism. In this talk, hear about the history and future of democratic social experimentation, from Kurt Lewin and Karl Popper to Donald Campbell. The song I have sent you this week is another from the Cheshire Cats album we talked about last week….which we made back in the day….this song is “The Battle Of New Orleans” and is one I produced for my great mate “Skiffle” John Lomax…..who sadly passed away some time ago….I put the instrumentation together on the record…. John was a member of The Atlantics Skiffle Group who were one of the first in the area…I saw them in 1958 which was the first time I heard an electric guitar….they appeared on “Top Town” and John went on to make films…one featuring the final plight of Donald Campbell which won him an award….this led to a feature by the BBC called “Days Which Changed The World”…in which they used John’s footage and had an actor playing him. In 2001 I put a skiffle group together with him and we went to Finland to perform at a huge convention…..I loved John dearly and miss him very much. I just don’t get why certain so called celebs think they can sing those Rat Pack standards…..Peter Andre has brought out an album with a collection of them…WHY?...his version of “Come Fly With Me” is as bad as it gets…. Robbie Williams brought one out a while back….if they insist on swing music why not get some original stuff….if I want to hear that sort of stuff I’ll listen to Sinatra and his gang….who do it properly. And any day now we will be bombarded with all the stale played out Christmas songs….Kylie has just made a Christmas album of all the songs we are sick of hearing…WHY?....do something ORIGINAL!! I don’t know who puts certain people in positions where they can make major decisions….the latest classic is to turn off the street lighting in certain villages to save money….and…wait for it…they can put the lights on again if the locals pay for it….wait for it….7 PENCE a day each. You couldn’t write this in a comedy show……HELLO…street lighting keeps areas safe doesn’t it?.......oh sorry I forgot…we have to send billions overseas to help other countries…..I despair. The new James Bond film has been heavily covered by the national news….as has Adele’s new record….National News???....I don’t think so…..incidentally Daniel Craig is from Hoylake which is just down the road from me….one of the lads I play golf with knows a lad who went to school with him….said he was a bit of a wimp in school and never did any sport etc….his mate is now a mechanic and Dan is James Bond….how’s that for poetic justice. ……It’s Halloween time and the shops are doing well….I just don’t get Halloween….it was just a bit of duck apple in my day….all this trick and treating is something we ahave aquired from the States…like high fives etc….then we have Bonfire night where loads of kids will get injured….can’t wee the point of fireworks….or am I Mr. Bah Humbug?

Bah Humbug?

Nehemiah 6:3 Pastor Hornbuckle continues with Part 5 of his message entitled mission impossible coming from the book of nehemiah.Today’s message continues with nehemiah responding to enemies who were attempting to lure him away from mission, with talks of peace. As believers, we are often faced with many distractions from the enemy with continual attempts to pull us off track.Saints must continue to remain steadfast and focused on god. The local Samaritan Daily Sun might have reported the incident like this: Nehemiah Says No to Ono Samaritan officials have disclosed that Nehemiah, governor of Judah, has again turned down the offer of Governor Sanballat of Samaria to meet at one of the villages in Ono, on the Judah-Samaria border. The proposed conference would include the Big Four of the area: Geshem, leader of the Arabs; Tobiah, leader of the Ammonites; Sanballat, and Nehemiah. Sanballat issued a statement today in which he sharply criticized Nehemiah for his repeated refusals to cooperate. He reports that the purpose of such a meeting would be to work on a formula for lasting peace in the region. The Samaritan leader said with evident frustration, “This is the fourth time Nehemiah has turned down my invitation to meet and discuss our mutual concerns. These repeated refusals mean that the responsibility for increasing tensions and any violence that may result, rests solely upon Jerusalem.” (Adapted from Donald Campbell, Nehemiah: Man in Charge [Victor Books], p. 55.) "I'm convinced it's the best thing ever written and recorded in the history of things written and recorded" - Moby. Rhapsody in Blue was first heard exactly 90 years ago when it premiered on February 12, 1924, in New York's Aeolian Hall. Through its use at the opening of Woody Allen's 'Manhattan' it has become synonymous with the city that inspired its creation. But for people around the world, George Gershwin's "experiment in modern music" has become imbued with the most personal of memories. LA based screen writer Charles Peacock reflects on how this piece has become entwined with his life and how, on an evening at the Hollywood Bowl this music "healed him". When Adela Galasiu was growing up in communist Romania, Rhapsody in Blue represented "life itself, as seen through the eyes of an optimist". For world speed champion Gina Campbell, the opening of that piece will forever remind her of the roar of the Bluebird's ignition as it flew through the "glass like stillness of the water" and brings back the memories of her father, the legendary Donald Campbell - it was played at his funeral when he was finally laid to rest decades after his fatal record attempt on Coniston Lake. Featuring interviews with Professor of Music Howard Pollock and musician Moby.

Gina Campbell is the daughter of Donald Campbell who died attempting to break the world water speed record on Coniston Water in 1967. Jonathan Lewis is a playwright who swapped military training at Sandhurst for the theatre. Based on his time spent in a military hospital, his play 'Our Boys' is an account of the tedium and terror that young soldiers face when recovering from injuries incurred in the line of duty. 'Our Boys' is playing at London's Duchess Theatre. Rod Davis is one of the original members of the Quarrymen, a skiffle group formed by John Lennon at Quarry Bank School in Liverpool in 1956. Rod was the banjo player but left the band to go to university and the Quarrymen eventually evolved into the Beatles with the arrival of Paul McCartney and George Harrison. The Quarrymen reformed in 1997 and are still performing. The Quarrymen will be performing at The Thunderbolt, Bristol in December. Producer: Paula McGinley.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the man who broke the British land speed records, Richard Noble. His thirst for speed began when he was six years old and saw John Cobb's jet boat Crusader. Then, in the 1970s, he built his own jet-propelled car in his garage at home. He called it Thrust One, and wrote it off at over 200 miles per hour. Nine years later, he broke the land speed record with Thrust Two, reaching speeds greater than a Boeing 747. Last year he watched as his team, with Andy Green behind the wheel, broke the sound barrier. Now firmly established alongside other champions of speed like John Cobb and Malcolm and Donald Campbell, Richard Noble chooses his Desert Island Discs.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: The Dambusters March by The Central Band of the RAF Book: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy Luxury: Guitar
