The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the one-hundredth-and-second episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the former Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guests are the command team for 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). COL Patrick “Pat” Nelson is the Commander of 7th SFG(A). CSM Adam Dunn is the Command Sergeant Major of 7th SFG(A). And CW5 Jose Villarreal is the Command Chief Warrant of 7th SFG(A).   The 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), known by its call-sign “Red Empire” and affectionately referred to as “La Familia,” is one of the most storied units within U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Headquartered at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, 7th SFG(A) has a rich legacy of conducting Unconventional Warfare, Foreign Internal Defense, and Counterinsurgency missions—particularly in Latin America, where it has maintained deep strategic partnerships for decades. The group played a key role in Cold War-era advisory missions, post-9/11 operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and continues to remain at the forefront of global Special Operations Forces (SOF) engagements. Its motto, “Lo Que Sea, Cuando Sea, Donde Sea”—Spanish for “Anything, Anytime, Anywhere”—embodies its agile, mission-first ethos. Today, 7th SFG(A) is leading the way in integrating Special Forces capabilities into Large-Scale Combat Operations, leveraging its regional expertise, cultural fluency, and tactical excellence to shape the battlefield in support of joint force commanders.   This episode explores the evolving role of U.S. Army Special Forces—commonly known as Green Berets—in Large-Scale Combat Operations (LSCO). The conversation emphasizes how Special Forces must adapt from their traditional fast and flexible mindset to operate with greater precision, depth, and coordination within a conventional division fight. The leaders from 7th Special Forces Group discuss lessons learned from their groundbreaking Combat Training Center (CTC) rotation, which required ODAs to integrate with division-level planning and synchronize across time, space, and domains. The challenge of transitioning from unconventional warfare to supporting a Joint Forcible Entry and operating in support of division commanders is central, as Special Forces teams are often forward-deployed and must now shape the battlefield not just tactically, but operationally—anticipating information requirements and transitions before a fight begins.   Additionally, the episode identifies specific points of friction and critical learning moments. These include the challenge of synchronizing SOF timelines with conventional unit operations, the sustainment burdens in contested environments, and the complexity of operating in terrain saturated with sensors, drones, and electronic warfare. Best practices included conducting a full Leader Training Program (LTP) to understand the conventional planning process, refining staff-level battle drills and MDMP execution, and committing to humble, self-aware learning. The leaders also stress the importance of strategic relationships—both with conventional forces and international partners—as a long-term enabler of influence and access. In LSCO, they note, tactical decisions can have strategic consequences, and the margins for error are razor-thin. Success for Green Berets in future conflict will depend on their ability to master the basics, think in depth, and execute with discipline and precision, in lockstep with the broader joint force.   Part of S12 “The JIIMs of JRTC: Working with Our Unified Action Partners” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast.   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. Talk Back to MeBoth Rangers and Green Berets point to Robert Rogers as a figurehead of their history. But in today's conflicts, they perform considerably different roles. Where the current Ranger Battalion focuses on direct action, Green Berets point to Unconventional Warfare as their primary task. Zach Masek of the Dead Warrior Society, a Green Beret Veteran and Columbia graduate draws out misconceptions that prevail to this day about the history of special operations, Robert Rogers himself, and the Spartans. This sets the stage for his critique of the Green Beret mission, and how it claims a history of Unconventional Warfare, even when they rarely, if ever, participate in it. Use Code 2025deaddrop10 for 10% off your order at obsidianarms.comThis episode has been sponsored by Obsidian Arms, a manufacturer of tools, parts and firearms, as well as operating as an OEM shop for those looking to bring excellence to the market. Jason has worked on Afghanistan portfolios at the tactical, operational, strategic, national policy and international policy levels. He has taken part in a variety of missions to include military, diplomatic, intelligence, academic, and humanitarian efforts. During his Afghanistan work Jason worked daily with dozens of generals, ambassadors, and political appointees with Afghan portfolios. Due to his assignments and knowledge of the topic, Jason is one of the few Americans that has been privy to the discussions of all 4 presidential administrations as they planned their Afghanistan policy. Jason studied both Arabic and Dari at the Defense Language Institute, is a professor at the USAF Special Operations School, and is a Malone Fellow in Arab and Islamic Studies. He holds a Master's Degree in South Asia and Middle East Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School, is a CGSC graduate, and was a term-member of the Council on Foreign Relations from 2010-2015. Jason is an award-winning author who has written 4 books in English and has published over 225 works since 2008 in over 40 outlets. As a professor, lecturer, and columnist he focuses on Afghanistan, Islam, terrorism, and various National Security topics. For his work on Afghanistan Major Howk earned the Legion of Merit award for his years of exceptionally meritorious service as a Soldier-Statesman, and two Bronze Star Medals. He also earned the Afghanistan Governmental Success medal from the President of Afghanistan. Afghanistan ExperiencesSep 2002-Sep 2003       Sep-Nov 2003: Operations officer Coalition Task Force 82. Engineer Operations Officer on MG Vines General Staff at Bagram Airfield. Focus on engineer support to daily counter-terrorism operations across the country. His key effort was the completion of the FOB Salerno Airfield and Heliport in Khost province. Tactical and Operational level experiences in various Eastern Provinces.Nov 2002-Sep 2003: Aide De Camp to MG Karl Eikenberry as he took over as Chief of the Office of Military Cooperation-Afghanistan at the U.S. Embassy Kabul and also as the U.S. Security Coordinator. They worked daily with Afghan cabinet members across all parts of the government for the first year of the interim government and got to know all of them intimately. MG Eikenberry was tasked with implementing the international Security Sector Reform program in Afghanistan, and as Chief OMC-A creating the Afghan National Army and MOD from scratch. Their typical daily interactions included the leaders of UNAMA, NATO-Nation Embassies, ISAF, the 3-star US Forces Commander, CENTCOM, OSD, the Joint Staff, the Intelligence Community, regional ambassadors, the Special Forces leaders training the ANA, and the US Ambassador. For the majority of the year Jason was the sole note-taker in over 4,000 hours of meetings and the drafter of reports to State, OSD, and CENTCOM.2004-July 2007During an assignment in TRADOC Jason began to create and teach courses in the Army and at civilian institutions about Afghan and Islamic culture. He helped the Engineer School develop their Cultural, Counter-insurgency, and Counter-IED training for 2LTs deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq. During company command the Army selected Jason for the highly competitive Foreign Area Officer (FAO) program after completing a fellowship in Oman where he studied their insurgencies and how they rebuilt their nation after those conflicts. He continued to study Afghanistan and stayed in touch with his former boss LTG Karl Eikenberry who was the Combined Forces commander in Afghanistan.2007-2009 FAO TrainingIn FAO training he obtained a Master's Degree in South Asia and Middle East Security Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School in 2008. At NPS Jason focused on Afghanistan and the Oman counter-insurgency campaigns. He published a thesis on Oman's COIN and CT lessons which was distributed to his former bosses LTG Eikenberry, LTG McChrystal, and GEN Petraeus. He also wrote a directed study on the creation of the Afghan Military and the US Security Sector Reform efforts that was published as a monograph by the US Army War College in 2009 with a foreword by GEN McChrystal. That study was completed after many interviews with LTG Karl Eikenberry who was then assigned to NATO, just prior to his selection as Ambassador to Afghanistan. From 2008-2009 Jason attended Arabic language training at DLI until the day LTG McChrystal was nominated by President Obama to command ISAF. He was immediately ordered to the Pentagon to prepare LTG McChrystal for senate confirmation and to assist him when he took command in Kabul.2009-2010 As ADC to LTG McChrystal, Jason helped prepare him for his assignment and attended all meetings with Legislative and Executive branch leaders in Washington. Within hours of the Senate confirmation, they flew to Brussels to meet with NATO leaders and then onwards to Kabul Afghanistan. In Kabul Jason helped GEN McChrystal form trusting relationships with the same Afghan leaders Jason worked closely with when they first formed the government in 2002.For the next 2 months Jason traveled with GEN McChrystal to over half the provinces to listen to NATO and Afghan forces, and Afghan leaders to better understand the war.  Jason assisted COMISAF during the strategic review of the U.S. and NATO Afghanistan policy, often quietly liaising between GEN McChrystal and Ambassador Eikenberry, his new and old bosses. After the strategic review was sent to CENTCOM Jason was selected to initiate and design the NATO interagency team focused on reintegration — i.e., how former insurgents could rejoin society. GEN McChrystal loaned Jason to support the incoming Reintegration Advisor who had worked on a similar mission in Iraq and would carry out sensitive diplomatic missions. As the Military Assistant and Political Advisor to retired British Lt Gen Sir Graeme Lamb. They worked with the Afghan government as they developed their peace and reintegration policy with foreign governments, diplomats, and international organizations. This also helped launch the US/NATO peace process and made Jason one of the insiders on Afghan peace talks for over a decade.2010-2014After a year in Dari (Afghan Farsi) language training at DLI, and graduation from the Army Command and General Staff College, Jason was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff's Afghanistan and Pakistan Task Force. In that role, he led two of the highest-level interagency teams of Afghanistan and Pakistan experts in providing products and briefings for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and OSD leadership, and the White House.  Also in that role, his teams helped prepare four different Generals to assume senior commands in Afghanistan. One of his team's key efforts was monitoring and helping U.S. leaders prepare for diplomatic negotiations with the Taliban.2015-2021After retiring in 2015, Jason continued his focus on Afghanistan and Islam as a professor at numerous institutes and continued to advise the U.S. and Afghan governments, and international bodies. From 2016 to 2017, he served as an advisor on the Presidential Transition Team's National Security cell focused on the Afghan peace process and foreign relations with Islamic nations. He contributed ideas to both the 2017 National Security Strategy and 2018 National Strategy for Counterterrorism. From 2017 onwards he served as an advisor on conflict resolution to the U.S. government, NATO member states, parts of the U.N., the Afghan President's NSC staff, and the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces leadership.Jason was invited to give presentations at the 2019 and 2020 Central and South Asia Military Intelligence conferences at U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). His topics included the future of the ANDSF, and the Unconventional Warfare efforts of Pakistan against Afghan and NATO forces.Jason led a USIP project team to assess post-conflict security in Afghanistan that culminated in a an invitation from the Afghan President and UN Chief in Kabul to give a presentation to over 70 nations at the 2020 U.N. Donor Conference on Afghanistan in Geneva.A second USIP project allowed his team to remain involved in the peace process until August 2021 as part of a U.S. Institute of Peace project authorized to conduct Track-2 diplomacy while talking to the Afghan government, various parts of Afghan society, and Taliban supporters. From 2019-2021 during both USIP projects his team took part in the USIP-led discussions that contributed to the congressionally-mandated Afghanistan Study Group Report. “A Pathway for Peace in Afghanistan” was published in February 2021.August 2021 OnwardsAfter the collapse of the Afghan republic while Jason was virtually assisting the evacuation of at-risk Afghans from Kabul, he and his colleagues formed the Global Friends of Afghanistan non-profit (GFA) to speak and write about Afghanistan and ensure the topic of Afghanistan was not removed from the daily news, and to help Afghans raise their voices to the outside world. On 1 September 2022 GFA held their inaugural annual conference with Georgetown University to discuss the evacuation and resettlement of Afghans, and the humanitarian crisis and security collapse in Afghanistan. Writing ExperienceSummaryJason has written 5 books, was on the editing team of the FAO Association International Affairs Journal, and was the senior editor for A Voice for Two Nations blog. He has published over 225 articles, essays, and news reports in over 40 outlets. He is a mentor to writers and a member of the Military Writers Guild, where he edits and co-authors with new writers. On this episode, Joe welcomes Bryan Stern, Army Veteran and Naval intelligence officer with over 25 years of experience. Bryan served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom after being a first responder at Ground Zero on 9/11. Following his military service, he founded Grey Bull Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing Americans in dangerous locations outside the reach of the U.S. government. In this episode, Bryan discusses a recent rescue mission in Russian-occupied Ukraine and the unique challenges faced by Grey Bull compared to traditional special operations units. He also sheds light on the current situation of Americans being held captive worldwide and his unwavering commitment to bringing them home.   Episode Resources: Grey Bull Rescue Foundation   About Our Guest    Grey Bull Rescue Foundation was founded by Bryan Stern, a Multiple-tour combat veteran of the United States Army & Navy, courageous 9/11 first responder and purple heart recipient. Bryan has over 25 years of military experience focused on special operations specializing in Hostage Rescue, Counter-Terrorism, Counter- Proliferation, Critical Technology Protection, and Unconventional Warfare. He served as Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, and as Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance. Congressman Pittenger received bipartisan recognition for his leadership on reforming the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), the only government agency tasked with identifying potential foreign investments which threaten national security. His Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act, which cracked down on malicious foreign investment targeting national security technology, was signed into law in 2018. He also received bipartisan recognition for elevating the issue of “terrorism financing” as another front in the war on terror. In this role, he has met with hundreds of world leaders and security experts to advocate increased global cooperation in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism. He has organized and hosted more than one dozen Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forums, which have brought together over 700 Members of Parliament and other leaders from 70 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America to discuss counter-terror finance, cyber security, data sharing, cryptocurrencies, and predatory foreign investment. Born and raised in Texas, Robert was the youngest of four children. His dad was a small business owner, and his mother raised the children. Upon graduating from the University of Texas, Congressman Pittenger worked for 10 years as Assistant to the President of Campus Crusade for Christ, helping to bring the work of the organization to over 170 countries. Harvest Returns CEO Chris Rawley joins the show to talk about the different type of agricultural (AG) investments they offer. Harvest Returns has some unique investments including tech plays, indoor farming, cattle, aquaculture and more. Johnny and Derek discuss their thoughts on the food industry as a whole and whether they'd invest in these. The guys also do a quick followup on their car situations since they last spoke about them in ILAB 236. While serving as a career naval officer, Chris Rawley visited dozens of war-torn and poverty stricken countries and began to appreciate the importance of agriculture to every single person on earth. As a professional investor with this new found appreciation, he decided to invest in a farm, but quickly discovered that these types of assets were inaccessible to the average person. The problem drove him to create Harvest Returns in 2016 to democratize investments in agriculture. Rawley has held corporate management roles in Jones Lang LaSalle, Electronic Data Systems, L-3 Communications, and served as a defense consultant at Special Operations Command with Blackbird Technologies. He has invested in real estate and income-producing agriculture for nearly two decades. Rawley is an angel investor in early stage agriculture and food companies, including the Indian agriculture FinTech company Jai Kisan. He serves on the advisory board of the AgTech start-up AgroFides. Rawley is a Captain in the Navy Reserve, serving as the Reserve Chief of Staff for United States SIXTH Fleet, and provides oversight for more than 500 sailors operating across Europe and Africa. During his 29 year military career, Rawley has filled a variety of leadership positions in naval, expeditionary, and joint special operations units afloat and ashore. He has deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Western Pacific. Rawley has a degree from Texas A&M University, earned an MBA at George Washington University, and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College. He is the author of Unconventional Warfare 2.0 and an avid water sports enthusiast. Col. David Maxwell (ret.), Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), discusses "Beyond Nuclear Crisis: New and Long-Term Strategy for the Korean Peninsula." This lecture was part of the Asia Initiative Lecture Series at The Institute of World Politics. It took place on July 7, 2022. About the Lecture: The Yoon and Biden administrations have an opportunity for a new approach to the Korean security challenge. The Alliance way ahead is an integrated deterrence strategy as part of the broader strategic competition that is taking place in the region. There is a need for a Korean “Plan B” strategy that rests on the foundation of combined ROK/U.S. defensive capabilities and includes political warfare, aggressive diplomacy, sanctions, cyber operations, and information and influence activities, with a goal of denuclearization but ultimately the objective must be to solve the “Korea question” (e.g., the unnatural division of the peninsula) with the understanding that denuclearization of the north and an end to human rights abuses and crimes against humanity will only happen when the Korea question is resolved that leads to a free and unified Korea, otherwise known as a United Republic of Korea (UROK). About the Speaker: Colonel David S. Maxwell (ret.) is the Editor-in-Chief of Small Wars Journal. He is a Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Senior Fellow at the Global Peace Foundation(where he focuses on a free and unified Korea), and a Senior Advisor to the Center for Asia Pacific Strategy. He is a 30-year veteran of the US Army, retiring as a Special Forces Colonel. He has worked in Asia for more than over 30 years, primarily in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Colonel Maxwell served on the United Nations Command / Combined Forces Command / United States Forces Korea CJ3 staff where he was a planner for UNC/CFC OPLAN 5027-98 and co-author of the original ROK JCS – UNC/CFC CONPLAN 5029-99 (North Korean instability and regime collapse). He later served as the Director of Plans, Policy, and Strategy and then Chief of Staff for the Special Operations Command Korea. He commanded the Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines (JSOTF-P), served as the G3 for the United States Army Special Operations Command, and culminated his service as a member of the military faculty at the National War College. Following retirement, he served as the Associate Director of the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. Colonel Maxwell is a fellow at the Institute of Corean-American Studies, an advisory to Spirit of America, and on the Board of Directors of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, the International Council of Korean Studies, the Council on Korean-US Security Studies, the Special Operations Research Association, the OSS Society, and the Small Wars Journal. Before the Iraq war in 2003, Green Beret teams infiltrated Northern Iraq, linked up with the CIA, and embedded deeply with the Kurdish Peshmerga to prepare for war. These special missions were called “Advanced Force Operations.” Subsequently, these special teams brought in the rest of the Green Berets during an operation called "the Ugly Baby." Then, one of the most significant battles in Special Forces history occurred: "Operation Viking Hammer," where six Green Beret teams along with a handful of CIA and Air Force Special Ops personnel, combined with approximately 8000 Peshmerga, took back hundreds of square kilometers from almost 1000 Ansar Al Islam extremists, and secured a poison production facility of national level significance. This book is the only firsthand account of these essential Unconventional Warfare operations, written by an operator who was there. In addition to describing these historically significant Special Operations missions, "One Green Beret" also details a 15-year career in the Green Berets that includes many unique experiences, such as joint operations alongside Russian Spetznaz on the northern border of Kosovo, and postwar operations in Bosnia embedded deeply with the locals. Mark Giaconia questions everything, and provides a VERY humble, sobering, and human perspective on war, military service, and strategic considerations. One Green Beret is very inspiring, and conveys the author's personal evolution from gunslinger to educated computer scientist; a true tale of “post traumatic growth.”https://www.amazon.com/One-Green-Beret-Extraordinary-1996-2011-ebook/dp/B07D1V9XRLToday's Sponsors:

This event is sponsored by the Asia Initiative Lecture Series at The Institute of World Politics. About the lecture: Colonel David S. Maxwell will discuss the nature, objectives, and strategy of the Kim family regime, why the regime poses a threat to the Republic of Korea, and why it is in the US national interest to ensure there is a strong ROK/US alliance to deter war. He will outline the “Big Five” — war, regime collapse, human rights, asymmetric threats, and unification. He will underline that the only way the world will see an end to the North's nuclear program, threats, human rights abuses, and crimes against humanity is through unification and the establishment of a United Republic of Korea. About the speaker: David S. Maxwell is a Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD).* He is a 30-year veteran of the US Army, retiring as a Special Forces Colonel with his final assignment teaching national security at the National War College. He served over 20 years in Asia, primarily in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Colonel Maxwell served on the ROK/US Combined Forces Command staff and the Special Operations Command Korea. He is the co-author of the first CONPLAN 5029, the plan for North Korean Instability and Regime Collapse. He commanded the Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines and was the G3 at the US Army Special Operations Command. Following retirement, he served as the Associate Director of the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He is on the Board of Directors of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, the International Council of Korean Studies, the Council on Korean-US Security Studies, the Special Operations Research Association, the OSS Society, and the Small Wars Journal. He earned a B.A. in political science from Miami University, and an M.A. in Military Arts and Science from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and from the School of Advanced Military Studies, and an M.S. in National Security Studies from the National War College. During this thought provoking episode, Mr. Bob Jones asserts that governance is a critical and often overlooked source of destabilizing tensions within societies. Simultaneously, governance is the solution for managing irregular warfare. Our discussion centers around a recent article that Bob authored called: “Strategic Influence: Applying the Principles of Unconventional Warfare in Peace.” Bob reviews his framework which helps visualize how governance affects populations (see show notes link or article for the diagram itself). Additionally, we discuss irregular warfare as a continuum which includes revolution-democracy-tyranny, the imperative for the United States to remain as the leader of the international rules-based system, and the critical feedback he has received from various national security stakeholders. Link to full show notes and resources Guest Bio: Mr. Robert Jones is a retired U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel; a former Deputy District Attorney; a Fellow with the Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS), and the Senior Strategist at U.S. Special Operations Command.  Currently serving as a member of the SOCOM J5 Donovan Group, Mr. Jones is responsible for leading innovative thinking on the strategic environment and understanding how it impacts factors critical to national security, such as competition, the character of conflict, deterrence and societal stability. Mr. Robert Jones is a retired U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel; a former Deputy District Attorney; and the Senior Strategist at U.S. Mr. Jones's principle focus is on the fundamental human aspects of political conflict. In a rapidly evolving strategic environment, good strategy is rooted in understanding what remains constant and why; while good tactics demands a realistic appreciation for what is different or changed. Successful campaigning demands a fusion of the two. He enjoys “wire brushing” concepts by routinely standing in front of tough audiences.  None of these is tougher than those he faces in his role as a fixture in the Joint Special Operations University's Enlisted Academy, applying a commonsense perspective to bring our most experienced Special Operators strategic insights they can actually use. This is also the third consecutive year that Mr. Jones has addressed the Air War College class during the Operational Design phase of their curriculum, sharing practical insights gleaned from his experiences. He has been a featured speaker at Universities as storied as Oxford, St Andrews, Stanford and Harvard; and has led professional development events with operational units across the SOCOM enterprise. Mr. Jones is also a Fellow with the Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS). TODAY ON SOJOURNER TRUTH, WE REBROADCAST THIS CONVERSATION BETWEEN MARGARET PRESCOD, CAMILO MEJIA, AND JOHN PERRY. In 1979, the people of Nicaragua overthrew the U.S.-backed dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza. The Somoza family dictatorship ruled Nicaragua from 1937 until 1979, when the Sandinista National Liberation Front liberated the country from their rule. Upon taking power, the Sandinistas vowed to free their country from the grip of U.S. hegemony and prioritize the needs of poor people ahead of foreign corporations. Since then, the people of Nicaragua have faced constant attacks from war hawks in Washington. This, in an effort to topple the democratically-elected Sandinista government and impose a pro-U.S. government. During the 1980s, the U.S. armed and trained counter-revolutionary forces, known as the contras, in neighboring Honduras. Not only did the contras kill supporters of the Sandinistas and carry out terrorist attacks in Nicaragua. They also helped to smuggle drugs from South America into the United States, destroying Black and Brown communities at home. Although the Sandinistas lost an election in 1990 that temporarily removed them from power, they eventually came back in 2006 after another democratic election. Since 2006, the United States has continued to attempt to destabilize and overthrow the Sandinista government. This time, however, instead of using brute force and armed drug gangs, they are using soft power and Western-aligned organizations that claim to promote human rights. Millions of U.S. government and corporate dollars are spent on three Nicaraguan organizations, and Amnesty International and other global organizations produce unbalanced and unsubstantiated reports which malign Nicaragua. These reports portray Nicaragua as a country that needs to be saved from alleged human rights abuses committed by the government. However, as you will see, many of these reports are far from the truth and have more sinister intentions. Today on Sojourner Truth, we bring you audio from a recent webinar entitled, How U.S. Unconventional Warfare in Nicaragua Utilizes Human Rights Organizations. The webinar, hosted by the Alliance for Global Justice, examines the role played by international and local human rights organizations within U.S.-supported destabilization efforts in Nicaragua. During todays program, you will hear presentations delivered by Camilo Mejia and John Perry. Camilo Mejia is a Nicaraguan analyst and writer residing in the U.S. who is a former Amnesty International prisoner of conscience. John Perry is a long-time investigator, writer and resident of Nicaragua.

Green Beret James Stejskal holds the distinction of serving in one of the Army's most unique and at one time, highly classified Special Forces Detachments operating in East Germany during the Cold War. Known simply as Detachment "A", the unit operated behind the Iron Curtain within the Soviet-controlled German Democratic Republic. The unit's primary mission was to wreak havoc behind the enemy's lines, and buy outnumbered NATO forces time to breakout from Berlin if hostilities commenced between the West and the Warsaw Pact Armies. It was a daunting mission - it's even been described as "suicidal." But the men of Detachment "A"/Special Forces Berlin carried out this mission for over thirty years, remaining in the shadows until the unit was officially recognized in 2014. In this episode, Stejskal details what it was like to serve in a unit that defined Unconventional Warfare and the backbone of Special Forces, and what it was like to tell the unit's story decades later in his book, "Special Forces Berlin." Originally Posted March 15, 2018 This is part one of a two-part discussion on Unconventional Warfare.  If you’ve read anything about Green Berets in the past 16 years, you probably heard it was through Unconventional Warfare, UW, that the US – specifically Green Berets – defeated the Taliban, de-stabilized then re-stabilized Iraq, and defeated ISIS in Syria. But what is UW? We want to provide our G’s with a framework and understanding of UW – the doctrine and the basics.  Green Berets are practitioners of the art of UW.  But what happens when we return home and see the hallmarks of UW being conducted against our own nation?  How can our G’s recognize UW when it is conducted against you? One of the things you will hear most soldiers say, and definitely Green Berets is that we can't just “shut off” what we’ve seen or know.  We have spent decades training and honing our skills in a specific art form of warfare, the unconventional kind.  We are practitioners and academics of our art and skill. So we take what we have learned through history and military doctrine, what we’ve applied overseas, and we return home, where there is no active battleground.  The only problem is we immediately recognize that we are in fact in the middle of a battleground.  A battleground of ideas and influence that employs the exact same strategies and techniques we have been trained to employ abroad. You too are in this battlefield, even though there is not combat there is still a conflict.  So how do you begin to peel the onion and identify what is Unconventional Warfare? War is fluid, its not tanks and bombs, and barbed wire and the western front from day one. It starts years, decades before the first bomb in simmering small conflicts and skirmishes. Never forget all warfare has a political end, power will be gained and lost.  Minor battles and conflicts occur to move pieces on a political chessboard, dissidents, insurgents, and proxy armies test and probe defenses and solidify their base of support. If an insurgency takes hold, it may progress to open war, a war of movement or the conflict may retreat into the sub-surface, patiently waiting for an opportunity to overthrow the reigning power. Insurgents may hope to provoke an over-reaction by the state to claim injustice and rally their support to overthrow the government, or perhaps the state is truly so corrupt and heavy-handed that the people no longer tolerate the suffering and openly revolt.  In all these thrusts and parry’s by what appear to be disparate groups, there are alliances, supporters, an underground network, and auxiliary of people who, encourage, influence, and at times manipulate both the insurgent and the state to act in certain ways. This is the nature of unconventional warfare, it is done by surrogate and proxy before the large battle pieces move on the chessboard.  All nations engage in this type of geopolitical influence, including the US, this is the world of Green Berets.  And if the Green Beret is successful in this UW environment, open war never takes place, it is stopped before it starts, a terrorist attack never happens, an insurgency or uprising loses ground before it makes the 24-hour new cycle.  That is the end-state of unconventional warfare. This is what we discuss in part one, the basics of UW.  In part two we will discuss how these same tactics are currently being applied by outside influences in the US and how each of us, D, myself, and our G’s are susceptible to these influences and, how it takes diligence and study to identify and guard against these forces.  We try and clear away the idea of conspiracy theories in matters of global strategic influence and highlight the methods of UW conducted against the US.  As always we are eager to hear your feedback on the issue and discuss the matter further. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe, write a review, and share it with your friends.  If you disagree tweet us and let's talk about it. We are all susceptible to influence and manipulation. So if you weren’t trained to live in these small wars, shadow world like green berets, how do you recognize it?  And what do you do when you realize are the target audience, and have been played?  If you have an idea or an answer, then you are thinking like a G – and that's what we want! Most of us in SF have always known that these forces were at work in the US and within our political machine.  But the presence of external actors really came to light during this last election.  The Russians really did “meddle” in the election, they bought up social media advertising to influence the campaign. Nobody should be surprised by this, but what you might find surprising is that their measure of success had nothing to do with who won at all.  Their only goal was to sew the seeds of suspicion, dissent, and disruption – one of the objectives of Unconventional Warfare.  They succeeded.  Listen to the rhetoric, the continuing accusations, investigations, denials, and the elimination of a middle ground for even the most moderate opinion. What a stroke of luck, the stars aligned just so for the Russians – look at our candidates, their rhetoric, the civil issues in the cities with the police, multiple failed foreign policy initiatives abroad, and continued more in the middle east, one might say the Russians were supremely opportunistic.  Or were they? There are foreign fingerprints are on the social media posts, memes, and tweets that fuel and incense the vitriol on the inter-webs. Lobbyists, lawyers, and advocacy groups take money shrouded in foreign bank accounts and convoluted sponsorship to persuade lawmakers to support or refute initiatives that are rife with emotionalism and framed in moralistic rhetoric.  But when the onion is peeled their sole aim is to encourage a challenge to the status quo and foundational documents of our nation.  They don’t have to overturn them to be successful, they just need us to open the door. What a successful UW campaign that would be! Even in our own community, an ambitious former green beret and malcontent is profiteering off of his associations and access to our community by publishing footage of green berets being killed in Africa while doing their mission.  In the name of “journalism”, these criminally naive crusaders purposefully spread propaganda and material that bolsters the morale and support for enemies engaged in killing US soldiers and citizens.  They become useful idiots in the information war that rallies Islamic Terrorists against America. All of these influences and actors are at play on the global stage, they always have been. It's only now that our modern society has such immediate and abundant access to these influential mediums that the impact feels so amplified.  But when you see them and recognize them, you have to call them out.  In our discussion, D raises the key point.  Our biggest threat in America isn’t a foreign invader taking over our nation.  The biggest threat is that the US will tear itself apart from the inside out.  Each side will believe they are on the ‘correct’ side, that their cause is just and righteous even.  Meanwhile, the belief of being right, and just, is being coordinated, encouraged, and scripted by outside influences.  If you still don’t believe it, follow the money. Ask who gains from this divisiveness in our culture?  Hopefully, you can start to see through the veil of current events, and recognize how even without battles and armies and unconventional war is being waged right here in our homeland. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe, write a review, and share it with your friends.  If you disagree tweet us and let's talk about it. Sharmine Narwani joins us today to talk about how western regime change wars are born and raised. She offers some of her research and analysis on Middle East wars, particularly the war in Syria as a comparison to what we are seeing in Venezuela today and with a special focus on how it all starts with a carefully crafted narrative. Sharmine is a commentator and analyst of Mideast geopolitics based in Beirut. She is a former senior associate at St. Antony’s College, Oxford University and has been published by a wide variety of publications, including the New York Times, the Guardian, Asia Times Online, al Akhbar English, Al Jazeera and RT.  And you can always find her writing at her website, MidEastShuffle.com. The methods used in much of the regime change and destabilization that we have seen so frequently in recent years is laid out in the 2010 Unconventional Warfare (UW) Manual of the US Military’s Special Forces, which was leaked in 2010. Sharmine has written about it and shares some of those insights today. This manual begins with the following paragraph: “The intent of U.S. [Unconventional Warfare] UW efforts is to exploit a hostile power’s political, military, economic, and psychological vulnerabilities by developing and sustaining resistance forces to accomplish U.S. strategic objectives…For the foreseeable future, U.S. forces will predominantly engage in irregular warfare (IW) operations.” But, as we note in our conversation, the world is changing and the success rate of these methods, used for decades by the American empire and its allies, is declining. The political environment in America and even more consequential, the balance of power in the world is also in a state of flux, dynamic and uncertain. There are many signs that the American people want to adopt a new approach toward the world and foreign policy. But it remains to be seen whether the elected government, the plutocrats and the dominant national security state will be able to accept a new global reality and the loss of their sole superpower empire. The expectations of the political leadership and the population of America is seemingly off when measured by the reality of what it takes to build a democracy especially in some of the nations that we’re actively attempting to do so. I was lucky enough to make it back alive, and even luckier to still have all my limbs. Before I joined the military I taught Karate to kids and adults, and since I have gotten out of the Army I haven't really done much until about a year ago when I joined a company called Advocare I would help vets to find different services in the VA that they are eligible for, but also wanted to be able to help them to find a job as well if I could. If someone is local, I have a few friends who own their own businesses and I try and hook the ones up who aren't wanting to be a part of AdvoCare Mark Ballas is a former Special Forces “Green Beret” and Army Ranger with over 20 years of combined operational and civilian teaching experience within the Special Operations community.
