FUENTE: AP

On this week's episode we are continuing the Salem episodes with The Ropes Mansion. It is a gorgeous, two storied, white colonial mansion with cute little gabled windows. Its close to downtown Salem at 318 Essex Street. The Ropes Mansion housed 4 generations of Ropes family members that lived and died within it's walls. It saw happiness and a lot of tragedy, which makes sense why it's one of Salem's most haunted house, and it's not even connected to the Salem Witch Trials. It might look incredibly familiar to those that are fans of the disney cult classic, Hocus Pocus. The Ropes Mansion exterior was used as Allsion's house. Remember the part when Max and Dani are trick or treating and they get into a fight and she goes and cries in the hay bale and Max has to make her feel better and they are in front of that gorgeous home, yep that one. So lets get into shall we? Grab yourself a cup of tea, make sure the doors are locked and the sage is close by. I have a story to tell you. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/myhauntedlife/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/myhauntedlife/support
Jennie and Dianne are joined by David Moffat, a Visitor Services Specialist & researcher at The House of the Seven Gables. David has done a lot of research into the life and work of Caroline Emmerton, the woman who saved the House of the Seven Gables by turning it into the museum we know today and using the funds from that museum to create a settlement house for thousands of immigrants who came to America in search of a new home. Emmerton's legacy can be traced all across the city of Salem. Her grave is in Harmony Grove Cemetery. Her birth house still stands on Summer Street and her home as an adult can still be seen today on Essex Street. The mark of her generous spirit can be found at the Women's Friend Society on Hawthorne Boulevard and at the Plummer Home for Boys on Winter Island. Members of the Haverhill Lions Club were collecting glasses for improving eyesight around the world during the recent VFW Santa Parade, but now, one could say, they are turning their sights to helping stock food pantries with soup.Lions Club member Tony Pecci was a recent guest on WHAV's morning program.“We have several hundred cans of soup right now. We are collecting them to distribute to the local shelters. We have a drop off location at Maria's in Haverhill at 81 Essex St., and the soups will be going to Haverhill food cupboards and pantries,” he said.Pecci said those looking to donate will find plenty of opportunities during the season. “We are going to be doing that through the month of December, so if you could collect soups or ramen and bring them down to Maria's. Issa Zefta, one of the owners of Maria's is also a Haverhill Lion, so he's willing and able to take in as many as you can get for us so we can help out our food cupboards and pantries, especially with the cold weather coming,” he explained.Pecci said this past spring, the area Lions Clubs were able to donate a truckload of nonperishable food to Emmaus in Haverhill. There is another collection going on too.“Through the first week of January, we are also using Maria's on Essex Street as a drop off point. We have for many years been involved with the ‘Coats for Kids' campaign. For those that aren't familiar with it, we collect coats. We like to say please donate gently used warm winter coats for children and adults. In fact, we are going to be collecting them through Jan. 8,” he said.Pecci added all sizes are needed, and early donations are appreciated. Anton's will professional clean the coats for distribution back into the community. The Haverhill Lions Club meets the second and fourth Tuesday nights of the month at Maria's Family Restaurant at 81 Essex St. in Haverhill. A walk to promote “Unity in the Community” takes place this Saturday, Oct. 2, in Haverhill.The14th annual Walk for Peace, under the direction of Violence Intervention and Prevention, known as VIP, also includes a cookout, speak out, face painting, music, color powder and more. Haverhill VIP Program Director Carol Ireland, a recent guest on WHAV's morning program, detailed the program.“We'll start at GAR Park, go down Winter Street, make a left on Locust Street, down to Granite and Essex Street and out to Railroad Square. We'll be coming down Washington Street, the entire way to Main Street. When we get to Main Street, we go up to City Hall and we will stop there for about 10 to 15 minutes to hear speeches from two of our young people,” she said.At City Hall, participants will also hear from a special guest with a unique perspective.“We're very lucky to also have a woman by the name of Clarissa Turner who will also be speaking because we wanted to represent a mom who has been impacted by violence. She lost her son. She's from Boston and has started an organization called ‘Legacy Lives On.' We know that we have many people in our own community that have been impacted by violence and have lost, whether it's to violence or to homicide or to suicide. We want to create more space for some of our survivors,” she said.Ireland said those participating in the walk, approximately 1.5 miles in length, are asked to carry in support of the effort.“We have some signs that we've been able to save, new ones we've made, please bring a sign with any message you care to about peace, respect”Ireland said all people, young and old, are encouraged to participate in the Haverhill VIP Walk for Peace. It starts Saturday at 11 a.m. She said research conducted by Boston University School of Public Health indicates young people who have participated in the VIP program are less likely to be involved with a gang, physical fighting decreases, healthy relationship skills increase and there's an improvement in self-esteem.The Violence Intervention and Prevention program began in 2005 at Haverhill High School. It has grown to include students of all ages and partners with various groups and organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Haverhill, UTEC and YMCA.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

We’ve heard a lot of talk about this being a moment, and June 6 was indeed a memorable moment in the history of Guelph with over 5,000 people in Market Square to march for Black Lives Matter. It amplified of a lot of voices who don’t always get heard in our community despite best intentions, but moments pass and that one was almost four months ago. How have things been going lately? Since the Black Lives Matter march here in June, more people have been sharing their stories and experiences with an inequitable system, and to add insult to injury, the search for that justice made Guelph Black Heritage Society the target for renewed racist attacks. In the summer, the Society’s headquarters at Heritage Hall on Essex Street was repeatedly vandalized, a very visible and very visceral reminder that there’s still a lot of work to be done in our backyard. This week's guest is Kayla “Kween” Gerber, who is the executive director and community engagement co-ordinator of Guelph Black Heritage Society, and one of the leading faces of the Black Lives Matter march in Downtown Guelph this past June. Issues of racism and inequality have not gone away in the last four months, but the intention of this week's podcast is to check on our progress. Kween joins us this week to talk about how it felt to stand up in front of thousands of her fellow Guelphites, and how she’s been coping by making herself the face of the cause. She also talks about the sometimes difficult conversations she’s had with the Chief of Police and the especially difficult discussions she’s tried to start with the people that send her racist comments. She also discusses the bigger issues for all of us, like recognizing our own privilege, and how we can measure progress on equality and social justice in the immediate future. So let's catch up with Kween on this week's edition of the Guelph Politicast! The Guelph Black Heritage Society is trying to raise $135,000 to create an education fund, and you can go to their website, or look for the hashtag #ChangeStartsNow to learn more. You can also check out the first episode of Diverse and Converse tonight at 9 pm on Rogers Channel 20. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, and Spotify. Long before America was America, there was Salem. The town was a successful and busy port city, but it would become an infamous location that still causes a chill to run down our spines at the mere mention of its name. Based on my research, I would say that Salem has two main streets in its historic district that are the most haunted in the city. One is Essex Street and the other is Derby Street. On this episode, we are going to focus on the history and hauntings of Derby Street. The Moment in Oddity was suggested by John Michaels and features Fredric Baur buried in a Pringles can and This Month in History features Levi Weeks acquitted in Manhattan Well Mystery. T.C. Cannon: At the Edge of America On view March 3, 2018 to June 10, 2018 “One of the most influential, innovative, and talented Native American artists of the 20th-century, T.C. Cannon embodied the activism, cultural transition and creative expression that defined America in the 1960’s and ‘70s. Cannon’s work — as an artist, poet, and aspiring musician — is deeply personal yet undeniably political, reflecting his cultural heritage, experience as a Vietnam War veteran, and the turbulent social and political period during which he worked. Cannon preferred bold color combinations, mash-ups between Native and non-Native elements and never shied away from the complexity and nuance of identity politics. Cannon interrogated American history and popular culture through his Native lens, and exercised a rigorous mastery of Western art historical tropes while creating an entirely fresh visual vocabulary. T.C. Cannon: At the Edge of America celebrates Cannon’s creative range and artistic legacy through nearly 90 paintings and works on paper, as well as poetry and music”. On this week’s Cityscape we’re taking a bite into the history of Jewish delis in New York City with the author of a new book called Pastrami on Rye. Because pickles go well with pastrami on rye bread, we’ll pay a visit to the Pickles Guys on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the only pickle store still on Essex Street, which was once home to a bunch of them. And we’ll top the show off with a little mustard. We’ll talk with the current owner of A Bauer’s Mustard, a family owned mustard company that opened in New York City in 1888.
