We delve into Paul's childhood memories and relive some of the chilling experiences he encountered whilst living at his family home in the middle of seemingly normal 1970's housing estate, in a small Flintshire village. But was Paul the only person to bare witness these strange encounters? The answer just might well chill you to the core. Traducteur :Oxymoron Editions. The loss of a child must be heartbreaking, devastating, surreal all at once - how can you even begin to define it? One morning back in November 2007, it was a nightmare that North Wales father Simon Hill was thrust into - but for Simon, there was an extra dimension to such a tragedy. For it was at the hands of his equal - the person supposed to love and protect a child more than anyone. The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, involving a child, that some listeners may find disturbing and or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening. Barry Horne was 22-years-old when he first joined the professional ranks. A few months later, the chemistry graduate was the goal-scoring hero in arguably Wrexham's greatest result when they knocked Portuguese giants Porto out of the Uefa Cup Winners' Cup in 1984. Horne went on to play for Portsmouth and then alongside the likes of Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier at Southampton. A dream move followed to Everton, the club he supported as a boy growing up in Flintshire, scoring a crucial goal to avoid relegation in 1994 and then winning the FA Cup the following season. And with 59 caps for Wales, including being captain of the side that came agonisingly close to 1994 World Cup qualification, Horne certainly has no regrets about swapping the chemistry lab for the football field.

Debbie Fielder is deputy head of Clwyd Pension Fund at Flintshire County Council, where she has spent over 27 years. She is a leading voice on the LGPS investment circuit having been an early adopter of broad diversification and a founding member of the Welsh Pensions Partnership. Our conversation traces her start in local government and finance functions and how this led to a role in pensions. We speak about her early mentors and the process and advice that led to Flintshire being an early adopter in many alternative asset classes. Debbie did not realize at the time that this aspect of the approach taken in Flintshire was somewhat unusual among LGPS peers and her experience in this area led to her being a unintended thought leader in this respect. We speak about the pooling process then and the launch of the Welsh Pensions Partnership and the vision for LGPS pooling and how it may enable scalable local investment in Wales. This is another one of Debbie's passions and we discuss this in some detail. This podcast is part of a collaboration with Crispin Derby Limited. Series 5 of 2023 is sponsored by With Intelligence, which connects investors and managers to the right people and data to raise and allocate assets effectively. Learn more about your ad choices. "When I was a kid, a little junior baby map addict, it always worried me enormously - Flintshire (detached). Why is it detached? What's wrong with it?" Mike Parker is obsessed by an area of Flintshire called the Maelor. On the map he says it looks like a calloused big toe sticking into the plump ribs of England. Situated slightly south of a line between Wrexham and Whitchurch, it follows few of the expected border rules. And to prove his point, he's taking Miles Warde on a tour, from the Wychbrook to Hanmer and the border post on the strange Fenn's mosses. You'll also hear from a local Welsh language teacher called Dr Cymraeg - aka Stephen Rule - and visit the vicarage where author Lorna Sage grew up. Her most famous book is called Bad Blood. Mike Parker is the author of All The Wide Border: Wales, England and the Places Between The producer in Bristol is Miles Warde

Peter Francis has been the Warden of Gladstone's Library at Hawarden in Flintshire for twenty-five years. Built in memory of the great Victorian prime minister, today it's Britain's only residential library. With over 200, 000 books, reading rooms and ‘Writer-in-Residence' schemes, in the present day it's a place for retreat, reflection and a home for the intellectually curious. Peter Francis is also an Anglican Priest. Throughout his career, from his ministry as a chaplain in the East End of London to Provost of St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow, he's pursued a vision of an inclusive church. He's a person who has always questioned orthodoxy, and has been closely involved with the movement for the ordination of women. This questioning has led him to great soul searching, and today he holds an understanding of Christianity without supernatural elements. He tells his story in a new book called ‘The Widening Circle of Us: a Theological Memoir.'
In this episode, Richard talks about his hopes for the future of Iceland Foods, the importance of sustainability and how his career journey led him to become Managing Director of Iceland Foods. Who is Richard Walker? Richard is Managing Director at Iceland Foods, the company established by his mother and father in 1970. He is a proud Trustee of the ‘Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation', and the conservation groups ‘Fauna & Flora International' and ‘Surfers Against Sewage'. Richard also sits on DEFRA's ‘Council for Sustainable Business' and Greenpeace's ‘Ocean Advisory Board'. In 2019 he was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Richard worked full-time as a shelf-stacker and cashier in London for a year, before becoming a store manager and then moving to Iceland's head office at Deeside, Flintshire, in 2013. After various head office roles, he became Managing Director of The Food Warehouse, Iceland's sister chain now with over 130 larger format stores, in 2015. He was promoted to his current role as Managing Director of the Iceland Foods Group in August 2018, overseeing almost 1,000 stores, 25,000 staff and 5 million customers per week. Outside family and business, Richard's greatest passions are trail running, skiing, surfing and climbing all over the world.

The so-called "Golden Ghost" has been sighted in Mold, Flintshire for centuries. But where did it come from, and what does it want? What about the pesky poltergeists which were scaring a married couple in their new home nearby, and even "some holy ladies"?In this special bonus episode of Ghosts & Folklore of Wales, join MARK REES (author of Ghosts of Wales/ The A-Z of Curious Wales/ Paranormal Wales etc.) as he looks back at three curious real-life ghost stories recorded in the Victorian age by a man from Flintshire.Bemoaning the lack of contemporary spooky tales, he submitted three of his own to the local press in order to reignite a little interest in the paranormal. Not only is it a fascinating glimpse into the supernatural beliefs of the people at the time, but it has parallels with our modern-day approach to spooks and spectres. With many people nowadays looking to re-enchant a word which has seemingly lost that spark of magic, could we all learn something from the man who shared ghost stories with his community? This episode was recorded especially for the Haunted Happening #hauntedhappening event on Twitter and Facebook, and is in addition to the normal weekly episode - two episodes in one week, which means double the ghostly and folkloric fun - cheers / iechyd da!

It was a joy to speak with Helen the @wernbachshepherdess, especially in these strange times of Covid-19, of week 4 of Lock-In. I follow Helen on instagram and love seeing life from her smallholding in Flintshire. Helen and her husband started their own flock of South Down sheep, for no other reason that they look cute, but have soon realised what a great terminal sire they are! With help from breeders, friends , neighbouring farmers and Farming Connect, they have received help and advice as well as the old 'get stuck in and have a go'. We spoke about the joy each season and Helens slight obsession with her flocks sex life come September! Being open about her post-natal depression and how having to get on and out to look after the livestock with a new born baby has given her confidence in herself. And in the great words of Chaka Khan 'I'm every woman' will now follow me as I strut around in my waterproofs! Hurrah!

Professor Neil Kenny (University of Oxford) Edwin Rose ( University of Cambridge) Abstracts Professor Neil Kenny The mineral-hunters: Martine de Bertereau and her husband Jean du Chastelet One kind of object dominated not just the life of Martine de Bertereau (1590–1643), but also her family’s past and so to an extent her social identity: minerals. Little wonder, then, that she married a fellow mineralogist, Jean du Chastelet. They spent their years and their resources prospecting throughout Europe, on a vast scale, before dying in Richelieu’s dungeons. What economic, social, epistemic, and also cultural and narrative frames did their object of choice impose upon them? And what does their singular pursuit of minerals tell us about the relation between knowledge, family, gender, and social hierarchy in early seventeenth-century France? Neil Kenny is Professor of French at the University of Oxford and Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. His publications include The Uses of Curiosity in Early Modern France and Germany (2004) and an earlier book on the word history of the ‘curiosity’ family of terms. His last monograph was Death and Tenses: Posthumous Presence in Early Modern France (2015). He is currently completing a book called Literary Families and Social Hierarchy in Early Modern France. The example he is discussing today grows out of that project, but is not included in it. Edwin Rose Collecting natural history in late eighteenth-century Britain The late eighteenth century witnessed a distinct rise in natural history collecting, both on a commercial and a scholarly level, alongside a growth in travel by naturalists, the main object of which was for them to acquire natural history specimens for their collections and record their observations of the natural world. One of the most prolific naturalist-travellers was Thomas Pennant (1726–98), whose collection remains intact and is primarily held by the Natural History Museum, London. In this paper, I give a general overview of Pennant’s collecting activities, examining his working practices in the field along with how he synthesised the information and objects he collected to compile his seminal work, British Zoology. This lavishly illustrated publication reached multiple editions from 1766 to 1812. Pennant’s collection was compiled from taxidermy, primarily birds and quadrupeds, from around the globe; shells, fossils, minerals, a small herbarium of dried plants, and a library which amounted to over 10,000 volumes, all of which he kept at his home at Downing Hall, Flintshire, North Wales. Pennant’s natural history collection was rigorously organised according to a variety of different systems of classification, such as that devised by John Ray (1627–1705) and that developed by Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) from the 1730s. The understanding of the connections between this large collection of physical objects, Pennant’s travels and his publications gives a direct insight into how these physical objects were used to create natural knowledge during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Edwin Rose is currently a PhD candidate in the department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. His interests are primarily concerned with the history of natural history, collecting and bibliography from the mid seventeenth to the mid nineteenth centuries, although the main concentration of his current research rests in the period between 1750 and 1830. Edwin has published widely on the history of natural history, in particular on the collections of Sir Hans Sloane (1660–1753) and the British Museum, and his most recent article entitled ‘Specimens, slips and systems: Daniel Solander and the classification of nature at the world’s first public museum 1753–1768’ was published in the British Journal for the History of Science in April, 2018. As well as his PhD research, Edwin has two forthcoming publications, one for a special issue in Notes and Records of the Royal Society entitled ‘From the South Seas to Soho Square: The Library of Joseph Banks and the Practice of natural history’ and another which he has co-authored with Anna Marie Roos (University of Lincoln) entitled ‘Lives and Afterlives of the Lithophylacii Britannici ichnographia (1699), the First Illustrated Field Guide to English Fossils’, to be published in Nuncius in January 2019.
