Am 28. März 1963 kam Alfred Hitchcocks Film «Die Vögel» in den USA erstmals in die Kinos. Er wurde zum Horrorfilm-Klassiker. Doch am Filmset gab es eine problematische Beziehung zwischen Regisseur und Hauptdarstellerin.

Eigentlich wollten Mariella und Micha diese Woche über 12 Monkeys reden, dann fiel uns aber auf, wie groß der Einfluss von Hitchcocks 45. Spielfilm auf Gilliams Zeitreisedrama war. Also ziehen wir eine gemeinsame Dial M for Movigilantes Folge über Vertigo vor.

Im Herbst seiner Karriere wendet sich der „Meister des Suspense“ Alfred Hitchcock dem bis dato eher dem B-Film vorbehaltenen Genre des Tierhorrorfilms zu und präsentiert mit Tippi Hedren eine neue hoffnungsvolle Hauptdarstellerin. Als eingefleischte Hitchcock-Fans war es für Michael und Rüdiger nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis sie sich den ersten Film des Regie-Altmeisters für ein Filmduell aussuchen. Die Wahl fiel auf "Bei Anruf Mord", nicht zuletzt weil sie das perfekte Pendant dazu hatten: "Nicht Auflegen" mit Colin Farrell. Der fast 50 Jahre jüngere Thriller von Joel Schumacher hat nicht nur ebenfalls einen mörderischen Anruf im Fokus, er gaht sogar auch noch auf eine Idee von Alfred Hitchcock zurück. Und so philosophieren die beiden über die Entstehung der Filme, die Fehlentscheidung aus einem von ihnen einen 3D-Film zu machen, Hitchcocks wegweisenden Cameo-Auftritt oder Joel Schumachers Stress mit Diamantenhändlern.  Und natürlich gibt es dazwischen auch wieder das obligatorische Trivia-Duell wo sich die beiden tief in die Recherche gestürzt haben und dabei unter anderem den unglaublichen Box-Office-Erfolg von "Bei Anruf Mord" in Neuseeland, einen Oscar-Gewinner unter dem Schneidetisch, das Bollywood-Remake eines der Filme sowie eine ungelöste Frage bei "Wer wird Millionär?" gefunden haben. Wir schreiben das Jahr 1959 - Hitchcock hat schon eine unglaubliche Karriere hinter sich, während James Bond noch drei Jahre auf sich warten lässt. Was James Bond damit zu tun hat? Nunja, wenn man sich “Der unsichtbare Dritte” bzw. North by Northwest anschaut, bekommt man das unbestimmte Gefühl, dass alle nachfolgenden Bond Filme von ihm abgeschrieben haben. Es ist ein Agenten-Thriller - mit einem Agenten wider willen. Roger Thornhill wird von Spionen für “George Kaplan” gehalten, der ganz oben auf ihrer “to kill” Liste steht. Also muss Thornhill sich etwas einfallen lassen, wie er am Leben bleiben und gleichzeitig beweisen kann, dass er nicht Kaplan ist. Dabei reist er mit einer sehr sexuell interessierten Dame durch Amerika, entgeht einigen Anschlägen und bekommt es mit echten Geheimagenten, Spionen und Gangstern - und mit sexuellen Eskapaden zu tun. Nachdem der Film rauskommt, erhält Hitchcock ein Telegramm eines gewissen Ian Flemming, ob er nicht seine Geschichten um einen Agenten mit der Nummer 007 verfilmen möchte. Plor, warum ist North by Northwest der erste James Bond und warum nicht? Und… was soll North by Northwest bitte schön für einen Himmelsrichtung sein?

In unserem Jahresrückblick haben wir den Vorsatz geschlossen uns in diesem Jahr mehr mit filmhistorisch relevanten Filmen auseinanderzusetzen. Allen voran entstand der Plan uns 2021 dem Thema ALFRED HITCHCOCK anzunehmen, da wir beide so gut wie keine Filme von einem der wichtigsten Regisseure der Geschichte kennen. Und damit geht es endlich weiter. Nicht ganz am Anfang seiner Laufbahn als Filmemacher, aber trotzdem noch weit vor Hitchcocks ganz großen Durchbruch führen wir unsere Reise fort. IM SCHATTEN DES ZWEIFELS (orig.: Shadow of a Doubt) aus dem Jahr 1943 ist für uns der zweite Film. Nachdem wir uns mit unserem ersten Film Saboteure aus dem Vorjahr schon etwas schwer getan haben, war es auch diesmal nicht ganz klar, wie wir an die Review dieses Films rangehen. Zumindest aber konnten wir eindeutige Vergleiche zu Saboteure ziehen und sind dann doch Schritt für Schritt der Bewertung von IM SCHATTEN DES ZWEIFELS näher gekommen. Davor aber gab es noch einen Film zu besprechen, den es noch gar nicht gibt. Immer mehr Neuigkeiten zu Christopher Nolans nächstem Film über J. R. Alfred Hitchcock was one of the most forward thinking filmmakers of the 20th century, advancing the art form and anticipating the taste of audiences. Through his most famous films Psycho, Rear Window, and Vertigo we find a common theme anonymous watching. This theme is exponentially more relevant today than in Hitchcocks own time, living as we do with the power to present our stories and peer into the lives of others. Though Hitchcocks cinema is often morally askew, gleefully implicating the viewer as just another peeping tom, his work offers a powerful lesson. Art offers us the chance to see ourselves through the screen. It draws us in through the chance to watch unseen, but then reveals to us our own motives. One of the most famous features of Hitchcocks movies his cameo shows us that the director is as aware of the audience as we are of the actors. Though we may think that we are bystanders in media, Hitchcock suggests, we are really participants. Like Norman in Psycho, we think we are anonymous watchers, but Hitchcocks cinema shows that there is no such thing. Someone is always watching us, if only the creator of the works we consume. Like Jeff in Rear Window, our idle past time of peeping grows to an obsession that will be found out, but it can offer moments of genuine insight. Like Scottie in Vertigo, however, if we unthinkingly accept the vistas we are offered, vision can easily degrade into delusion. Hitchcock, more than any other modern filmmaker, understood this and helps us to see it as well.
