2024 American League Championship Series Games Four and Five @ Progressive Field - Cleveland, OH The Guardians avoided going down three games to none thanks to the heroics of Jhonkensy Noel and David Fry, who respectively hit game-tying and walk-off home runs off of the Yankees relief aces. There's a ton of excitement in the Land, but there are some ominous signs for Steven Vogt's ball club. The starting pitching has not given length nor has it been very effective so far, and Cleveland will call upon the unproven Gavin Williams (3-10 4.86 ERA 76 IP) in game four and bring back Tanner Bibee (12-8 3.47 173 IP) on short rest for game five. More worrisome is the fact that the Yankees have been able to do damage against Emmanuel Clase, who is regarded as the best closer in the game. And with stalwarts Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis having been used heavily to boot, the strategy of reliever carousel might not be so sound. If the Guardians are going to pull this off, they will have to bring the bats as they did in game three. That means much better production from José Ramírez and Josh Naylor, as well as frankly any production from the catching tandem of Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges. We know the Guardians will not go down without a fight, but do they have enough to contend with the Yankees onslaught. Game three was a whirlwind finish for Aaron Boone's squad, coming back in the eighth with back-to-back homers, but then unable to get the final out despite just being a strike away from a likely insurmountable 3-0 lead. Still, the Yankees are in good position in this series, and they will look to press their advantage as they seek their 41st AL pennant. They send rookie Luis Gil (15-7 3.50 ERA 150 IP) to the mound in game four, who was incredible to start the year, but seemed to hit a wall in the second half. Then for game five, Carlos Rodón (16-9 3.96 ERA 175 IP) will get the ball again, looking to replicate his outstanding game one start. The bullpen has shown its first cracks the postseason, with Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver coughing up the lead in game three. This is no worry with the offense, however, as Giancarlo Stanton continues to just hit home runs nearly every game, Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto get on base in about half of their at bats, and Aaron Judge has finally shown some life. They are a dangerous lineup, and if the Guardians continue to gift them opportunities with runners in scoring position, the Yankees will make you pay. The federal government had prohibited the disenrollment of Medicaid recipients for three years during the pandemic. Georgia began reassessing eligibility for Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids in June, resulting in 95,578 individuals losing coverage, while 64,423 were renewed. The majority lost coverage due to procedural termination caused by a lack of information. The state aims to complete the redetermination process for all Medicaid enrollees by May 2024 and has implemented an information campaign to assist recipients.   ....……… Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com STORY 2: surplus   Georgia tax collections in June 2023 dropped slightly compared to the previous year, but the state ended fiscal 2023 with a significant surplus for the third consecutive year. The Georgia Department of Revenue collected $2.84 billion in taxes in June, a 0.4% decrease from the same month in the previous year. However, the total revenue for the entire fiscal year reached $33.13 billion, surpassing Governor Brian Kemp's revenue estimate of $28.4 billion, resulting in a surplus of nearly $4.8 billion. While individual income taxes decreased by 12.6% due to increased refunds, net sales tax collections increased by 4%. Corporate income tax receipts declined by 14.7% due to higher refunds for businesses. The surplus will trigger a debate on how to allocate the funds, with Kemp advocating for a conservative approach and using the surplus to fund income tax cuts. Critics argue that these cuts primarily benefit the wealthy and that the state should prioritize funding public education, healthcare, and economic mobility.   Story 3: canton   A woman and her 13-year-old stepson were arrested in Canton for allegedly breaking into numerous cars in the area. The Canton Police Department responded to multiple reports of car break-ins, with a total of 26 incidents reported. Some cars were unlocked, while others were forcibly entered. Blood found inside the vehicles was collected as evidence. Witnesses saw a red vehicle leaving the area, and later, the woman and teenager were found unconscious in a red car in a shopping center parking lot. Stolen items and a firearm were discovered in the car. The woman, Brianna Rogers, faces charges of entering auto and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, while the teenager faces similar charges. The investigation is ongoing, and more charges may be added.   Back in a moment   Break:  ESOG - Drake – Ingles 8   STORY 4: woodstock   The Woodstock City Council made several votes during a meeting aimed at improving the city's infrastructure. They adopted a resolution to apply for federal Community Development Block Grant funding from Cherokee County for the Dupree Road connection project. The city is seeking $685,000 in funding to create a safe connection with sidewalks and trail segments. They also authorized a supplemental proposal with Arcadis for the Paden Street Extension project and approved a contract for surveying the Market Street extension project. Additionally, the council approved an alcohol license request for H&M Food Mart, allowing the sale of wine and malt beverages at the convenience store.   Story 5: ballinger   Eric Ballinger, a lawyer from Canton, has been re-elected for a ninth term on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia. He will continue representing Cherokee County in the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit, a position he has held since 2007. Ballinger is the founder of The Law Office of Eric A. Ballinger, focusing on family law, criminal defense, general litigation, and small business representation. He obtained his law degree from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School and has been a member of the State Bar of Georgia since 1993. Additionally, Ballinger serves as a part-time judge for the Magistrate Court of Cherokee County. The Board of Governors is responsible for policymaking and consists of 160 members representing each judicial circuit in Georgia.   Story 6:  ATM   The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is seeking suspects involved in the theft of an undisclosed amount of money from an ATM machine at the Towne Lake Wells Fargo in Georgia. The incident occurred last week when the masked suspects allegedly confronted an ATM technician servicing the drive-through ATM. They forced the technician away from the machine and stole cash from it before fleeing in a white vehicle. The authorities believe the incident was specifically targeted at the ATM and not the bank's customers. As of now, the suspects remain at large, and the investigation involves the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, with no involvement from the FBI. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. The week will feature community-building initiatives and culminate in celebrations at Truist Park during the Braves' game against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 28. Additionally, the Hank Aaron Invitational showcase game will be held on July 30, featuring the top 200 high school-aged players from across the United States. The Braves will pay tribute to Aaron's impact as a player, executive, and entrepreneur with special pre-game and in-game content. Proceeds from the Atlanta Braves Foundation's 50/50 Raffle during the weekend series will support the Henry Louis Aaron Fund, promoting diversity in baseball.   Story 8:  All Star   Atlanta is being considered as a potential host for the 2025 All-Star Game, according to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. This comes after the city lost the opportunity to host the 2021 game due to controversy surrounding Georgia's voting laws. Truist Park, is being considered as a potential venue for the 2025 game. Other sites under consideration include Wrigley Field in Chicago and Fenway Park in Boston. Atlanta has previously hosted the All-Star Game in 1972 and 2000. The 2022 game will be hosted by the Texas Rangers, and the 2026 game will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Atlanta previously hosted All-Star Games in 1972 and 2000.   Story 9: BB Update   In an update on Cherokee ballplayers in the pros, Brennan Milone, a 2022 MLB draftee from Woodstock, has been promoted to the Lansing Lugnuts, the High-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Milone has been performing well across multiple teams, hitting .303 with 70 hits, 11 home runs, and 43 RBIs. Etowah alum Drew Waters of the Kansas City Royals has a season average of .239 with 27 hits and three home runs. Hunter Gaddis, a Sequoyah alum in the Cleveland Guardians' organization, has struggled with a 7.12 ERA in Triple-A. Justin Wrobleski, a former Chiefs pitcher, has a 4-3 record and a 3.27 ERA with the Great Lakes Loons. He was charged with felony theft by taking. The arrest warrant, filed by the Canton Police Department in November, stated that McClinton pocketed cash from customer deposits while working at a Canton area new car dealership. He deposited a small amount of the money to the business and took a total of $27,940. McClinton was released a couple days ago after posting a $5,000 bond.. Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com     STORY 2: station   Cherokee County has recently opened a new fire station, Fire Station 29, located on Highway 20 near Autumn Brook Drive in Canton. The station officially went into service on June 11, as announced by the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services. The addition of this station is expected to significantly reduce response times in that area of Cherokee County. The fire station is currently equipped with one staffed fire engine and has a team of six firefighters assigned to it. The opening of this station follows the county's purchase of a modular home in December, which served as temporary housing for the firefighters until a more permanent station could be constructed. The construction of the fire station is funded by the 2024 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).   Story 3: firefighters   Lt. Dave Burnaugh, a firefighter who has been battling brain and kidney cancer, has returned to his station after a 10-month absence. Firefighters from Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, along with neighboring departments, gathered at Fire Station 32 to welcome him back. Lt. Burnaugh, a 16-year veteran, fell ill while on duty last year and was later diagnosed with a Stage 3 astrocytoma brain tumor and a Stage 1 kidney tumor. He underwent brain surgery, radiation, kidney surgery, and chemotherapy. "Buzz" Ahrens Recreation Center to discuss ongoing and future recreation and parks projects. The summit aimed to facilitate communication and collaboration among those responsible for planning, funding, and implementing recreational opportunities in the county. Updates were provided by Ball Ground, Canton, Cherokee County, Holly Springs, and Woodstock, while Waleska was absent. Several projects were discussed, including the Long Swamp Creek Recreation Area, the Yellow Creek Road Conservation Area and Trails, a community park near Clark Creek Elementary School, and a park in the Hickory Flat area. The 2024 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) will fund many of these initiatives. Additionally, the impact of past parks bonds and upcoming plans for trail extensions and park improvements were highlighted.   Story 5: reinhardt   The Young Singers of Flint Hall, a new youth choir led by Reinhardt University Choir Director Martha Shaw, is seeking auditions for its first season. The choir is open to singers aged 10 to 14 who have a passion for music and a desire to learn. Martha Shaw, known for her successful leadership of children's choirs at Clayton State University, has been recognized for her choirs' achievements, including performances with prestigious orchestras and at renowned venues. He recently secured the NCAA outdoor championship in the 800-meter run, setting a school record with a time of 1:44.26 in the finals. Sumner's victory helped Georgia achieve a seventh-place team finish. His time not only broke the stadium record but also placed him fifth on the all-time collegiate list. Sumner became the first freshman to win the NCAA title in the 800 since 2017. He was particularly inspired by Donovan Brazier, the previous freshman champion and an American record-holder. On the other hand, Sequoyah alum Hunter Gaddis was optioned back to the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians after his third stint with the big-league club. He had a 5.17 ERA in eight appearances. Luke Berryhill, a River Ridge alum, has a six-game hitting streak in Triple-A and has improved his season average to .228. Brennan Milone, former Woodstock star, continues to impress in Single-A with a .280 average, 29 RBIs, and seven home runs. Judge asked to approve fund for U-Michigan doc’s victims Attorneys are asking a judge to approve creation of a settlement fund for sexual-assault victims of a University of Michigan sports doctor, a key step in a $490 million deal with more than 1,000 people. The settlement between the school and victims of the late Dr. Robert Anderson was announced in January, but there’s been no public activity. A request was filed this week under seal in Detroit federal court. It seeks the establishment of a “survivors settlement fund” and the appointment of someone to oversee the fund. Attorney Richard Schulte says he can’t comment on the filing. But he says “more concrete news” will come soon. Anderson died in 2008 after working at the university for nearly 40 years. Olympics – IOC committee visits sites for 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles The International Olympic Committee’s coordination commission made its first in-person visit to Los Angeles to inspect proposed venues for the 2028 Games. The group met with local organizing officials over three days. LA28 organizing committee Chairman Casey Wasserman says the city is “well-positioned for an exceptional event.” The Los Angeles Games will host 10,000 athletes, while another 5,000 will compete in the Paralympics. Judge asked to approve fund for U-Michigan doc’s victims Attorneys are asking a judge to approve creation of a settlement fund for sexual-assault victims of a University of Michigan sports doctor, a key step in a $490 million deal with more than 1,000 people. The settlement between the school and victims of the late Dr. Robert Anderson was announced in January, but there’s been no public activity. A request was filed this week under seal in Detroit federal court. It seeks the establishment of a “survivors settlement fund” and the appointment of someone to oversee the fund.
