Pure Telecom survey reveals 38% of adults in Ireland are muting their family instant messaging group

Pure Telecom, Ireland's high-speed broadband and telecoms provider, has announced the results of its inaugural Connected Lives survey, which found the average adult in Ireland is in five active instant messaging groups. The research found that the majority of people (79%) have at least one instant messaging group muted. The nationally representative survey of 1,004 adults in Ireland was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Pure Telecom and explored people's communications with others. The survey found that 96% of people are in at least one instant messaging group and the majority of us are not afraid to hit the 'mute' button. Pure Telecom's research found that 38% of those who are in instant messaging groups have a family group silenced, while the same proportion are muting a friends group. Nearly a quarter (24%) said that they have muted their work group, while 16% have turned off notifications for a sport or fitness group. Others being muted are neighbourhood groups (15%), hobby groups (13%), parents' groups (13%) and family groups of a spouse or partner (13%). The research also delved into how often people are communicating with each other - both over the phone and digitally, including via instant message, video call, social media and email. More than two-thirds (67%) of adults who are in a relationship reported having a phone conversation with their other half every day, while 58% said that they have digital communications with them daily. Meanwhile, 40% of adults who can speak to their mother have phone calls with her every day - with women being far more likely than men to do this - while 33% communicate with them digitally every day. That compares to a considerably lower 25% who speak to their father on the phone every day, or 23% who exchange daily digital communications with their dad. Adults in Ireland are therefore 60% more likely to speak to their mum on the phone every day than they are to their dad. Pure Telecom's research found that when it comes to all immediate family members, adults in Ireland prefer to have a chat on the phone. However, the survey found the opposite to be the case for friends, with 23% of people saying they have phone conversations with their friends every day, compared to 31% who have communicate digitally. Paul Connell, CEO, Pure Telecom, said: "Our research shows that we are a connected, sociable population and most of us have found a balance between communicating with loved ones over the phone and using the range of digital options that are at our fingertips. And, of course, the 'Irish Mammy' is right up there at the top - second only to people's other halves - as the person who people speak to the most. "The key with digital technologies is to find the balance that works for you and clearly, the majority are finding the 'mute' button as one way to achieve this and get a moment's peace! At Pure Telecom, we are proud to be able to connect people no matter how they choose to communicate - as and when they want." See more stories here.

In today's episode of the Brains Byte Back podcast, we speak with Nate Macleitch, Founder and CEO of QuickBlox, a company that provides instant messaging API that allows chat and calling functionality to be added to any Android, iOS, or Web application. From the show, you will learn insights into how QuickBlox provides real-time communication tools, including video calling and chat, for applications and websites. And Macleitch delves deep into the impact of AI on digital communication and discusses the company's vision for the future. Macleitch starts off by sharing how he and his team identified a market gap for adding chat, video calling, and file-sharing functionalities to various platforms. He adds that the name "QuickBlox" originated from the concept of providing quick-enabling blocks of functionality that users can add to their applications. He then highlights the transformational potential of AI in enhancing digital communication, pointing towards AI's ability to transcribe and summarize conversations, aiding users in finding pertinent information. He also talks about AI as a virtual assistant, performing tasks and providing suggestions in various scenarios, such as social networking, sales calls, and telemedicine. Macleitch then goes on to share how the company distinguishes itself in this crowded market stating that QuickBlox stands out by offering a deployable solution within the customers' hosting environment, providing enhanced security and data control. The focus on providing enabling layers and applications, including AI-driven features, differentiates QuickBlox from companies offering basic communication functionalities. He also shares advice for remote teams and entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of building the right team and utilizing existing technologies, particularly AI, to enhance efficiency and productivity. And finally, Macleitch talks about the transformative impact of AI in communication, akin to the birth of the PC or the Internet, providing co-pilots that assist in various tasks. While also highlighting the ethical considerations regarding privacy and data security with the widespread use of AI in communication. Links

Evan Sohn — The Future of Hiring

Scaling Up Business Podcast

What's changed with hiring and recruiting? The short answer is everything. Today's guest is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Recruiter.com, an on-demand recruiting platform providing flexible talent acquisition solutions that scale from startups to the Fortune 100, and he has great insights into the future of hiring.   Evan Sohn is a frequent contributor to CNBC and Yahoo! Finance and demonstrates expertise in a diverse set of industries, including Wi-Fi, Instant Messaging, data security, customer relationship management (CRM), and much more.   The state of hiring can be broken down into three parts: what was happening pre-pandemic, what is happening currently, and what the future of hiring looks like. Wage inflation means across the board, people are worth more than they were two years ago. Zoom interviews make it easy to connect with your potential new boss, and employees aren't expected to stay at a job nearly as long as they once were. Every micro-change that has affected the job market over the last few years will never again return to the “normal” way it once was.   It's predicted that in 2022, the U.S. will spend $50 billion more on hiring and retaining than was spent in 2019. More people are quitting as a result of the Great Resignation, but more people are getting hired as well. In many cases, the firing and hiring are simply a reflection of right-sizing teams.   So what metrics should HR and employees be held to? There needs to be more to the hiring process than just understanding compensation. Employees need to understand what they will be able to do at the end of the job, as well as what the career benefits are within the position.   If employees are willing to walk for a few more dollars, then something needs to change. Companies that have a unique culture, a clear advancement path, and a flexible environment are the companies that are going to be able to hire — and retain — the kind of employees that are going to stick around.   Interview Links: Evan Sohn   Resources: 20,000 Scaleups Scaling Up Summits (Select Bill Gallagher as your coach during registration for a discount.) After evaluating a wide range of sources, and seeking to identify relevant works, two major thematic domains were found. On the one hand, references addressing WhatsApp linguistic characteristics: status notifications, multimodal elements such as emojis or memes, and language variation, among others. On the other, the volume offers an overview of references describing the use of WhatsApp to learn English as a foreign or second language (EFL/ESL). The author provides a broad critical review of previous works to date, which has enabled her to detect areas of research still unexplored. John Scott Lawton's English, you know ...

In this episode of 'John Scott Lawton's English, you know' I interview Asif Bhana as we talk about men's mental health issues. We both talk openly about our experiences of encountering stress and anxiety in our own lives, often brought about through overwork or burnout. Why do we let this happen to us and what effects does it have on our mental and physical health, as well as on our friends and close family members? We consider the need for men to talk more openly about their feelings, particularly in relation to their health, but also talk about some of the barriers that exist, or are perceived to exist, which prevent men from seeking help. If you encounter anxiety, stress, depression, or suicidal thoughts, we would both encourage you to seek help and support immediately from any of the organisations listed here. This help could take the form of a phone call, Instant Messaging, informational resources online, or arrangements for a face to face meeting. Please make use of the resources that are available to you and find out what services or organisations are established in your country to assist people experiencing difficulties which have an impact on people's mental health. Details still TBD, but send either of us a DM or email monique@hey.com {please include your email address} to express your interest in participating.
