Tha Meg agus Joy a' leughadh nan dàin agus a' bruidhinn orra, a' lorg ceanglaichean eadar dàn a tha cho ùr 'sa ghabhas agus òran tradaiseanta. Cuspairean a' mhìos: dàimh ri àite, fuaimean fuachd, agus bàrdachd mar tùs-ùrachaidh agus mar chomas-iongantais.   In Hai-Àidh #4, Meg Bateman chose ‘Cànan na Deighe' by Beth Frieden, and Joy Dunlop brought in ‘Nam Aonar le Mo Smaointean' by John MacLeod. Meg and Joy read the poems and have a chat about them, bringing together a very recent Gaelic poem with a traditional song. Being the marketing and sales director of a major league team isn't easy, unless you win. And for Brooks Boyer, this Chicago White Sox season has been a downer. There's nothing he can do about but that continue making sure the fans have a great experience. Boyer has been with the White Sox since 2004 when Ozzie Guillen took over as manager. One year later the team won its first World Series in 88 years and then, in 2006, drew nearly 3 million fans.“You never know what the product is going to look like…if the White Sox are going to win 100 games, 90 games and win the division, they're going to go .500 and under .500. It's out of our control. You can't control what happens inside those lines but we certainly can maximize the experience which eventually maximizes the revenue," Boyer says on the show.Prior to his arrival, Boyer spent ten years with the Bulls including some championship seasons. Among his achievements, hooking up the company producing the champagne that would used if the Bulls won another title. They did and Boyer handed Michael Jordan a bottle as he entered a triumphant locker room.Boyer also played a significant role in choosing the White Sox announcers including Jason Benetti, Steve Stone and Len Kasper, all guests on this podcast. If Boyer's name sounds somewhat familiar, he played college basketball at Notre Dame under Digger Phelps and John MacLeod. I'm Stacey Simms and these are the top diabetes stories and headlines of the past seven days.  I'm on the road, so apologies if the audio and video are a little bit off but I think we're good enough. And As always, I'm going to link up my sources in the Facebook comments – where we are live – and in the show notes at d-c dot com when this airs as a podcast.. so you can read more when you have the time. XX Lots of articles, op-eds and celebrations to mark this week's 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. In July of 1921, the collaboration of Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip and John Macleod led to the isolation and purification of insulin. Most marking the occasion this year are focusing on access and affordability.. The International Diabetes Federation is launching a three year campaign to celebrate the advances made in diabetes, but also to call on more action to ensure all people living with diabetes have the best possible quality of life and health outcomes. https://insulin100.utoronto.ca/ XX The largest and most diverse genetic study of type 1 diabetes ever undertaken is complete. Researchers at UVA say they've identified the “most likely causal genetic variants associated with risk and their target genes.” They hope the results will help lead to better medical and drug treatment or possible prevention and genetic treatments. This study looked at more than 60-thousand people. and identified 78 regions on our chromosomes where genes are located that influence our risk for Type 1 diabetes. Of those, 36 regions were previously unknown. https://news.virginia.edu/content/largest-ever-type-1-diabetes-genetic-study-identifies-potential-treatment-targets XX New partnership announced between LifeScan the glucose monitoring company and Noom, a digital health platform focused on behavior change. LifeScan will be the first digital health diabetes management company to partner with  Noom's Diabetes Support Program. The goal is to bring personalized health insights to better address eating habits and weight management. The new fully-integrated OneTouch Solutions program will be available first to consumers in the US starting this Fall. https://www.lifescan.com/news-and-updates/2020-press-releases/noom-to-launch-digital-diabetes-and-weight-loss XX AstraZeneca gets approval for its once weekly diabetes medicine  Bydureon in kids as young as ten.   The injectable is used for people with type 2 diabetes. The approval comes about a month after data showed the drug significantly reduced blood glucose levels in adolescents compared to placebo. Bydureon is already approved for adults with type-2. The only other non-insulin options available for adolescents with type 2 have to be taken daily. https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/astrazenecas-weekly-once-diabetes-drug-gets-us-approval-children-2021-07-23/ XX Rice University bioengineers are using 3D printing and smart biomaterials to create an insulin-producing implant. The three-year project is supported by a grant from JDRF. They researchers will use insulin-producing beta cells made from human stem cells to create an implant that senses and regulates blood glucose levels by responding with the correct amount of insulin at a given time. The goal here is to show their implants can properly regulate blood glucose levels of diabetic mice for at least six months. So we're really early on here but it's an interesting new way of looking at reproducing what the pancreas does. https://indiaeducationdiary.in/rice-university-rice-team-creating-insulin-producing-implant-for-type-1-diabetes/ XX A judge rules that Roche did NOT infringe Insulet's patent – this case brought over a patch pump sold in the UK. We told you about this case a few weeks back.. Insulet claimed because of it's Omnipod patent, Roche didn't have the right to sell it's Accu Chek Solo. The judge ruled for Roche. https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/roche-diabetes-care-succeeds-in-uk-3307644/ XX An Olympic hopeful with type 1 is sitting out the Tokyo games due to an injury.. but she's also inspiring others and starting a new non profit to help other people with diabetes. Long jumper Kate Hall Harnden was on track for the 2020 Olympics, but was injured this past January Diagnosed at age ten, she and her husband have formed the DiaStrong Foundation, which aims to give financial assistance to people with diabetes who want to improve in their sport and diabetes management. They've planned to launch grants for financial assistance in July 2021, and those details are being finalized. They'll host two camps in Maine this year.. one for teens and one for any age. I've linked up to a great story in DiabetesMine if you want more info..   https://www.healthline.com/diabetesmine/kate-hall-diabetes-olympic-hopes XX That's In the News for this week.. if you like it, please share it! And join me wherever you get podcasts for our next episode -Tuesday –  I'm talking to Omnipod – we'll get a update on the Omnipod 5 with Horizon system. This week's interview – the one that's out right now – is with Gold Medal Olympian Gary Hall Jr – when he was diagnosed in 1999 he was told to give up swimming. You've probably heard that Banting and Best gave away the patent for Insulin for one dollar. But why did they do that? And did it achieve what they wanted? We often associate being successful with being profitable. And for a lot of enterprises that is true. But what if your goal is to win the second world war, and you do, but you go bankrupt in the process… is that a ‘success?' What if your goal is to save a lot of people's lives, and the only way to do that is to also make a lot of money? Does that sound like a contradiction? The truth is the relationship between ‘social good,' and ‘good business' is messy. We dig deep into this idea of morality, profits and what it really means to ‘do the right thing.' These science stories from history shed light on the modern research being done on Type 2 Diabetes. Specifically, we highlight the work of SciMar as they examine the hormone HISS - Hepatic Insulin Sensitizing Substance - and the effect it has on glucose levels in people who are insulin resistant. www.SciMar.ca

After France, we head to another very popular country, Canada, that happened to have made its reputation for its own unique inventions. We start with a popular sport, Basketball. James Naismith invented basketball and was the first one to make a basketball team- Canadian Heritage Minute. He did not just invent basketball but also the entire sport and wrote its rule book as the sports coach. Do you know what is a paint roller? The handy roller used to paint the walls of our houses. Yes, the paint roller was invented in Toronto in 1940 by Norman Breakey. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could take a patent for his work but later an American man Richard C. Adams took the patent for a paint roller and is now widely accredited for being the inventor of it. The next invention we will talk about is the garbage bag. We all use these bags at home for hygiene and sanitation. Ever wondered how did it come into existence and who invented it? The green polythene bag was invented by Harry Wasylyk and Larry Hansen in 1950. This invention was liked by a lot of people and soon a brand bought the invention. Parallelly, Frank Plom a Canadian inventor designed and invented the same product too. Insulin is a hormone produced by the human pancreas which allows our bodies to use glucose. When our body is unable to produce insulin, doctors recommend us to take man-made insulin. Insulin was invented by Sir Frederick Banting along with a biochemist John Macleod in Canada. They were even awarded a Noble prize in physiology for this. Who is hungry after listening so much? Wanna grab some bread and peanut butter? But do you know who invented peanut butter? American pharmacist, Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Canada patented peanut paste, now known as peanut butter in 1884. We will talk about many more inventions in coming episodes, till then keep tuned with Chimes Radio. It's that time of week again, so check out our newest episode. To start this week, we have a bit of levity. NASA have programmed one of their robots to hit itself with a shovel. It's all for a good cause, they want to get their InSight lander's mole digging again. The probe became stuck and using the shovel as a hammer is just the latest attempt to get it going again.DJ wants to tell us about Hollywood's response to COVID-19, including delays to the filming of Amazon's Lord of the Rings series. Now New Zealand has closed their borders and the Hobbits will not be going to Isengard.Next, it's time to enter THE FORBIDDEN LIBRARY. It isn't just in Harry Potter anymore; a group have created a library dedicated to copying articles from countries without press freedom. Did we mention it's in Minecraft? Backyennew says his son already regularly played Minecraft with his friends, so it quickly became their go-to hangout after the Japanese government closed schools two weeks ago in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Using it as a social space to hold their own graduation ceremony just made sense. It looks like these kids built a whole dang assembly hall, complete with a stage, seating, and a proper red carpet which they could all walk down in order to receive their virtual diplomas. The backdrop is even emblazoned with the word "Summer," just to reinforce the end-of-school vibes. Japanese netizens seemed to feel the same way with their comments:“The kids are all right.”“Parents are doing ‘telework’ and kids are doing ‘telegraduation.'”“I’m so jealous of what awesome things kids have these day.”“Those who say video games are bad, look at this!”“This will probably be an even better memory than a regular graduation for them.”16 March 2020 – Sonic beats Detective Pikachu…in the box office - https://movieweb.com/sonic-the-hedgehog-video-game-movies-box-office/Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to claim a record by becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, at least at the domestic box-office. The Paramount production currently stands at a little above $145 million dollars domestic collection. This puts it slightly ahead of Detective Pikachu, which managed to make around $144 million domestically. However, Detective Pikachu is still ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog in international territories, with earnings of over $400 million dollars. The future of video game movies appears to be looking bright now, with the medium finally being considered seriously by big Hollywood studios which are willing to allocate huge budgets and significant star power to those projects.16 March 2020 – Steam hits 20 million concurrent users - https://www.pcgamesn.com/steam/20-million-users-coronavirusThe precise number being 20,313,451. Curiously, though 20 million is the highest since records began, the number of in-game players is yet to break records. It appears a lot of users are idling in their library, browsing the store, or have just left it running in the background. The top game as we speak is CS:GO at 971k, followed by Dota 2 with 616k and PUBG at 264k. The 14 million difference between those logged into Steam and those playing is substantial, but this record at least points to continued growth for Valve’s platform. Increased competition from companies like Epic doesn’t appear to have caused any major issues, though Fortnite did once beat Steam’s in-game player record all on its own.Remembrances16 March 1935 – John Macleod - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Macleod_(physiologist)John James Rickard Macleod, Scottish biochemist and physiologist. He devoted his career to diverse topics in physiology and biochemistry, but was chiefly interested in carbohydrate metabolism. He is noted for his role in the discovery and isolation of insulin during his tenure as a lecturer at the University of Toronto, for which he and Frederick Banting received the 1923 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine. Awarding the prize to Macleod was controversial at the time, because according to Banting's version of events, Macleod's role in the discovery was negligible. It was not until decades after the events that an independent review acknowledged a far greater role than was attributed to him at first. He died after suffering from several years of arthritis at the age of 58 in Aberdeen.16 March 2012 – Donald E. Hillman - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_E._HillmanDonald Edison Hillman, American World War II flying ace and prisoner of war credited with five enemy aircraft destroyed. He was also the first American pilot, in 1952, to make a deep-penetration overflight of Soviet territory for the purpose of aerial reconnaissance. He flew a Boeing B-47B Stratojet which left Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. It crossed over the Arctic ocean, turned eastwards back over Siberia, and returned to Eielson via Provideniya. It was the United States' first deep-penetration reconnaissance mission against the Soviet Union. He died at the age of 93 in Seattle, Washington.16 March 2016 – Alexander Esenin-Volpin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Esenin-VolpinAlexander Sergeyevich Esenin-Volpin, Russian-American poet and mathematician. A notable dissident, political prisoner and a leader of the Soviet human rights movement, he spent a total of six years incarcerated and repressed by the Soviet authorities in psikhushkas and exile. In mathematics, he is known for his foundational role in ultrafinitism. His early work was in general topology, where he introduced Esenin-Volpin's theorem. Most of his later work was on the foundations of mathematics, where he introduced ultrafinitism, an extreme form of constructive mathematics that casts doubt on the existence of not only infinite sets, but even of large integers such as 1012. He died at the age of 91 in Boston.Famous Birthdays16 March 1774 – Captain Matthew Flinders - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_FlindersEnglish navigator and cartographer who led the second circumnavigation of New Holland that he would subsequently call "Australia or Terra Australis" and identified it as a continent. Flinders made three voyages to the Southern Ocean between 1791 and 1810. In the second voyage, George Bass and Flinders confirmed that Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) was an island. In the third voyage, Flinders circumnavigated the mainland of what was to be called Australia, accompanied by Aboriginal man Bungaree. Heading back to England in 1803, Flinders' vessel needed urgent repairs at Isle de France (Mauritius). Although Britain and France were at war, Flinders thought the scientific nature of his work would ensure safe passage, but a suspicious governor kept him under arrest for more than six years. In captivity, he recorded details of his voyages for future publication, and put forward his rationale for naming the new continent 'Australia', as an umbrella term for New Holland and New South Wales – a suggestion taken up later by Governor Macquarie. He was born in Donington, Lincolnshire.16 March 1840 – Shibusawa Eiichi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shibusawa_EiichiShibusawa Eiichi, 1st Viscount Shibusawa, Japanese industrialist widely known today as the "father of Japanese capitalism". He spearheaded the introduction of Western capitalism to Japan after the Meiji Restoration. He introduced many economic reforms including use of double-entry accounting, joint-stock corporations and modern note-issuing banks. He founded the first modern bank based on joint stock ownership in Japan. The bank was aptly named The First National Bank (Dai Ichi Kokuritsu Ginkō, now merged into Mizuho Bank) and had the power to issue its own notes. Through this bank, he founded hundreds of other joint stock corporations in Japan. Many of these companies still survive to this day as quoted companies in the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which Shibusawa also founded. The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry was founded by him as well. He was also involved in the foundation of many hospitals, schools, universities (including the first women's university), the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and charitable organizations including the Japan Red Cross. On April 9, 2019, it was announced that Eiichi would be the historical figure featured on Japanese ¥10000 banknotes expected to enter circulation around 2024. He was born in Fukaya, Saitama.16 March 1856 – Napoléon, Prince Imperial - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napol%C3%A9on,_Prince_ImperialNapoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte, prince imperial, the only child of Emperor Napoleon III and his wife, Eugénie de Montijo. After his father was dethroned in 1870, he relocated with his family to England. On his father's death in January 1873, he was proclaimed by the Bonapartist faction as Napoleon IV, Emperor of the French. The asteroid moon Petit-Prince was named after the Prince Imperial in 1998, because it orbits an asteroid named after his mother (45 Eugenia). He was born in Paris, French Empire.16 March 1936 – Raymond Damadian - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_DamadianRaymond Vahan Damadian, American physician, medical practitioner, and inventor of the first MR (Magnetic Resonance) Scanning Machine. Damadian's research into sodium and potassium in living cells led him to his first experiments with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) which caused him to first propose the MR body scanner in 1969. Damadian discovered that tumors and normal tissue can be distinguished in vivo by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) because of their prolonged relaxation times, both T1 (spin-lattice relaxation) or T2 (spin-spin relaxation). Damadian was the first to perform a full body scan of a human being in 1977 to diagnose cancer. Damadian invented an apparatus and method to use NMR safely and accurately to scan the human body, a method now well known as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He went on to collaborate with Wilson Greatbach, one early developer of the implantable pacemaker, to develop an MRI-compatible pacemaker. He was born in New York City, New York.16 March 1971 – Alan Tudyk - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_TudykAlan Wray Tudyk, American actor and voice actor. He is known for his roles as Hoban "Wash" Washburne in the space western series Firefly and the film Serenity and Tucker McGee in Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. He has also had starring roles in the films DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story,I, Robot,A Knight's Tale, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Rogue One. Since voicing King Candy in 2012's Wreck-It Ralph, Tudyk has voiced characters in every Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film. He wrote, directed, and starred in the comedy web series Con Man (2015–17) about a struggling actor whose career is still defined by a successful science fiction TV show he was once on, loosely based on Tudyk's own experience having been on Firefly. The series aired on Syfy in 2017 and earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. As of 2019, Tudyk plays the main antagonist, Mr. Nobody, in the DC Universe series Doom Patrol. He was born in El Paso, Texas.Events of Interest16 March 1926 – First liquid-fueled rocket - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/first-liquid-fueled-rocketAmerican Robert H. Goddard, successfully launches the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket at Auburn, Massachusetts, on March 16, 1926. The rocket traveled for 2.5 seconds at a speed of about 60 mph, reaching an altitude of 41 feet and landing 184 feet away. The rocket was 10 feet tall, constructed out of thin pipes, and was fueled by liquid oxygen and gasoline. His work was recognized by the aviator Charles A. Lindbergh, who helped secure him a grant from the Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. Using these funds, Goddard set up a testing ground in Roswell, New Mexico, which operated from 1930 until 1942. During his tenure there, he made 31 successful flights, including one of a rocket that reached 1.7 miles off the ground in 22.3 seconds. Meanwhile, while Goddard conducted his limited tests without official U.S. support, Germany took the initiative in rocket development and by September 1944 was launching its V-2 guided missiles against Britain to devastating effect. During the war, Goddard worked in developing a jet-thrust booster for a U.S. Navy seaplane. He would not live to see the major advances in rocketry in the 1950s and ’60s that would make his dreams of space travel a reality. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, is named in his honor.16 March 1968 – My Lai Masscre - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/my-lai-massacre-takes-place-in-vietnamA platoon of American soldiers brutally kills as many as 500 unarmed civilians at My Lai, one of a cluster of small villages located near the northern coast of South Vietnam. The crime, which was kept secret for nearly two years, later became known as the My Lai Massacre. a platoon of soldiers from Charlie Company received word that Viet Cong guerrillas had taken cover in the Quang Ngai village of Son My. The platoon entered one of the village’s four hamlets, My Lai 4, on a search-and-destroy mission on the morning of March 16. Instead of guerrilla fighters, they found unarmed villagers, most of them women, children and old men. The soldiers had been advised before the attack by army command that all who were found in My Lai could be considered VC or active VC sympathizers, and were told to destroy the village. the massacre reportedly ended when an Army helicopter pilot, Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson, landed his aircraft between the soldiers and the retreating villagers and threatened to open fire if they continued their attacks. The events at My Lai were covered up by high-ranking army officers until investigative journalist Seymour Hersh broke the story. Soon, My Lai was front-page news and an international scandal.16 March 2001 – Terminator has a rare theatrical re-release -https://www.scifihistory.net/march-16.htmlOn this day in 2001, The Terminator enjoyed a rare theatrical re-release in the United Kingdom. We welcome John MacLeod back to the show to talk about his experiences as a member of Team Canada's 1976 Olympic water polo team. John tells us what it was like to make the team, travel behind the Iron Curtain and march in the Opening Ceremonies. We also discuss what it was like to return to normal life after having a great Olympic experience, and how that transition can be difficult. Jill also tells a couple of Olympic-related stories of when she visited Innsbruck back in 1992 (her clothes were almost as fabulous as those from the 1970s). Plus, our self-isolation wouldn't be complete without relating an update on what COVID-19 has disrupted in terms of the Tokyo 2020 plans. We need your help! We've started mapping out all of the Olympic-related sites in the world so that wherever you go, you might be able to visit a little bit of Olympism. Help us fill up our map with arenas, museums, statues, etc. Together we can show how the Olympics have touched all parts of the world. Don't forget, our next book club episode is coming up! It's one year until the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games! As we start to prepare to watch these Games, which run from August 25-September 6, one thing stood out in our memories from watching Rio 2016: What's up with all of those classifications? Along with doping tests, para athletes have to undergo classification tests so that they're placed into competitive groups that all have similar limitations. Unfortunately for the casual viewer, they seem to be random letters and numbers that don't make much sense, particularly when you're watching four different finals of the same distance race. We wanted to learn more about this system, so we talked with Giles Long MBE. Giles is a seven-time medalist Paralympian in swimming, including three golds. Giles also heard people's frustration with understanding the classification system, so he created LEXI, a graphical system that quickly explains what each class is so that you can better enjoy the competition at hand. You can learn more about Giles at his website or follow him on Twitter and Insta. If you've wondered whether para athletes try to work the classification system in their favor, Paralympics Australia recently released a mandatory online course for its para athletes about this very topic! It doesn't happen often, but there's certainly a concern that someone would do this in order to win. We're excited to have Olympian John MacLeod*, producer at WitNit Productions, with us this week. John's been working on a fascinating project called "Beyond Bronze, Silver and Gold," which is a series of documentary films that share Olympians' untold stories. You've got to see the previews of his first two shorts -- they're riveting, and really well-told. John's working on the post-production portion now, and he's got a Kickstarter going to help fund that effort so they can get done and in front of audiences sooner. You can support his efforts here - you don't have much time left to do so, though! The drive ends on August 15. We also have a small slice of TOFU for you this week, as well as some legacy news. You know how much we love talking about Olympic Host City legacies. This time it's because Lake Placid is investing a lot of money into renovations of some of its facilities ahead of hosting the 2023 Winter Universiade. Good on you, Lake Placid! We're always impressed at how this town has done such a good job of reusing its facilities. On a different part of the spectrum is Rio. Not the other end, perhaps, but just a different part. The International Olympic Committee released a statement about what was going with the Rio venues, and we spend some time reading between the lines of the press release to figure out what it actually means. Predictive modelling is used in many aspects of our lives today.. in the banking and insurance industries to assess the risks and behaviours of customers… in marketing to anticipate customer purchasing behaviours… in meteorology to forecast the weather… in fact there are too many applications to list here but predictive modelling has the potential to be applied pretty much anywhere, even in the markets. Now you may be saying ‘wait, I’m not in the business of predicting, my trading is all reactive, I don’t predict, I just follow the markets’. I’m not going to go into that argument today but before you make any decisions or judgements about this episode I invite you to take a listen because we discuss the predictability of indicators, and some of the things you’ll hear in our chat about indicators are very interesting, no matter how you use them in your own trading. Our guest for this episode is John MacLeod. John has a background in using Predictive Modelling, working as a consultant to develop predictive models in consumer banking and mass marketing, and has applied this expertise to the stockmarkets as well. Some of the things you’ll discover in my chat with John are: Predictive modelling – what it is and how can it be used in trading to select stocks that may be setup for a big move, Using indicators as predictors and 3 major conclusions John has made by analyzing the predictability of 160 indicators – these results may surprise you! The accuracy of predictive modelling, which factors can impact accuracy and the easiest time periods to produce high accuracy predictions, How data derived from indicators can actually be more effective as predictors then the indicators themselves, Plus much more.

Kansas State legend and four-time NBA All-Star, Rolando Blackman. High School: William E. Grady Career and Technical, New York As a young boy, Rolando moved from Panama to New York. We discuss his successful transition to a new country and how he managed to learn - then master - a second language, all from just the age of eight. To this point, Rolando's sporting love was football (soccer). After two years of struggling to find others who shared his love of the game, he began to take an interest in basketball, courtesy of his soon-to-be mentor, Ted Gustus. What followed was a transformation from "a kid who couldn't play...a kid who was throwing the ball away", to being named one of the city's top high-school players. Perseverance, passion and focus was paramount. Three times (seventh, eighth and ninth grade) Blackman was cut from his high-school team, before making his breakthrough and fast becoming one of the state's finest players. College: Kansas State University | Years: 1977-78 - 1980-81 We chat about Rolando's decision to attend Kansas State University. He had upwards of 200 offers from schools across the country. For three of his four college seasons, Rolando was teammates with friend of the show, Ed Nealy. As a junior, the Wildcats made it to the NCAA Tournament, before bowing out (second round) with a two-point loss to eventual champions, the Louisville Cardinals. Individually, Blackman had a fantastic season, being named Big 8 (now Big 12) Player of the Year and 3rd-Team All-American. Following his junior season, Rolando was invited to the Olympic trials (May, 1980) in Kentucky. Upwards of 50 nations - USA included - boycotted the (July) Games, protesting the Soviet's invasion of Afghanistan. Whilst researching for my conversation with Rolando, I discovered that (his) Team USA participated in exhibition games - dubbed the 'Gold Medal Series' - against teams of NBA stars, culminating in a match-up against the 1976, gold medal-winning U.S. Olympians. Rolando reflects on the trials, the exhibitions that followed and the moment he realized he was one of the nation's elite players. As a senior at Kansas State, Rolando's buzzer-beating, second-round heroics, helped advance his Wildcats, deep into the NCAA Tournament - ultimately making a trip to the 1981 Elite Eight. It's widely agreed that his game-winner versus Oregon State - along with U.S. Reed and John Smith's same-day buzzer beaters - solidified the term, 'March Madness'. NBA / Euro career | Years: 1981-82 - 1995-96 We discuss the 1981 Draft. Rolando was a first-round selection. He shares a fantastic draft-day story about fellow-1980 Olympian and future (Dallas) teammate, Mark Aguirre. Rolando joined the expansion Dallas Mavericks, after just their first season in the NBA. They went 15-67 before he entered the scene. The team improved markedly in his first-two seasons with the Mavericks. He talks about the transition from being a college standout, to steering a fledgling team in the NBA. I refer to my conversation with another friend of the show, Dale Ellis, when I ask Rolando to recall the franchise's first (series) victory in the 1984 NBA Playoffs. It culminated in a crazy finish to the fifth-and-deciding first-round game versus the Seattle SuperSonics. The game was played at Moody Coliseum, due to Reunion Arena's already-existing booking to host a WCT (tennis) tournament. Dallas won the game in overtime, not before both teams were ushered back from the dressing rooms, to play out the final second on the clock - which didn’t start, the first-time around. The game is known as 'Moody Madness'. Rolando Blackman's passion for life, is perhaps best demonstrated in the 1987 NBA All-Star Game. In the final three seconds of the fourth quarter, down two points, he drove strong to the hoop, as a contingent of Larry Bird, Julius Erving, Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan tried to stop him. A foul was called, just before the time expired. Blackman stood alone, needing to make both free-throws, to force an overtime session. Rolando details his mindset on the final moments of regulation, the ensuing shots from the charity stripe and how he dealt with the countless distractions - most notably, Magic Johnson's attempts to limit Isiah's incessant trash-talking. As you may expect, we also deep-dive into Rolando's famous exclaim - "Confidence, Baby, confidence!" - one of the NBA's most-memorable moments ever. 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of that game. Rolando also discusses his opinion of Tom Chambers' All-Star Game MVP honors. Speaking of All-Star Games, we chat about the 1986 contest, played at Dallas' Reunion Arena. Rolando talks about being the Mavericks’ sole on-court representative. It wouldn't be a conversation about the 1980s Dallas Mavericks, if we didn't cover the team's battles against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks extended the World Champion Lakers, to seven games in the 1988 Western Conference Finals. From 1988 through 1992, the Mavericks were coached by John MacLeod and then, Richie Adubato. The franchise began a decline that would bottom out, the year after Blackman left the team. Rolando candidly discusses the series of events which led to the franchise's lowest era to date. In June of 1992, the Mavericks traded Rolando to New York. Instead of playing for Dallas’ 11-71 (1993) squad, he was a member of the mighty New York Knicks - a franchise set to seriously challenge the Chicago Bulls’ quest for a third-straight NBA title. We chat about Rolando's move to New York and his thoughts on the trade. The 1994 season is one of my all-time favorites. The league was in transition, with the then-retired Michael Jordan, playing baseball. The Houston Rockets and (Blackman's) New York Knicks were poised to make the leap to the NBA's elite. After disposing of the New Jersey Nets in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, en route to the NBA Finals, the Knicks went to seventh-and-deciding-games, in the next-three series – versus, Chicago, Indiana & Houston. Rolando shares his thoughts on the end of his NBA career, plus, talks about his decision to finish his playing days with international stints in Greece and Italy. After retiring as player, Rolando would return to Dallas. In the early 2000s, he was a Player Development Coach for the Mavericks. These were crucial years in the development of future Hall of Famer, Dirk Nowitzki. Rolando talks about how closely he worked - and scrimmaged - with a young Dirk. Within the decade, Rolando also coached internationally. In the 2006 season, he was an assistant coach to Avery Johnson, as the Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals. We discuss his future ambitions within the sport of basketball. In 2000, the Mavericks retired his famous #22 jersey. Then, in 2007, Kansas State retired his #25 jersey. In 2015, Blackman was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. I ask Rolando - though it's almost a certainty we'd know what he'd pick - to recall “The Game I’ll Never Forget”. Our conversation concludes with a quick chat about the significance of his jersey numbers. People mentioned in this episode, include: Sam Bowie, Sam Perkins, Hubert Davis, James Worthy & Kurt Nimphius.
