(03:00) - Reacting to NBA.com's 2024 GM survey(15:20) - Mavericks' Dante Exum has wrist surgery(17:35) - Wendell Carter Jr. extension with the Magic(21:45) - 2024 WNBA Finals: Liberty (1) vs. Lynx (2)(30:30) - 2024 Hall of Fame class Vincent Goodwill is joined by Isis "Ice" Young, as he is every Wednesday on the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, and the two of them open up the show by reacting to NBA.com's survey of GMs around the NBA. Why are they picking the Celtics to repeat? How did Jayson Tatum win for "best small forward"? And what does Shai Gilgeous-Alexander need to do to win the MVP award this season? After talking about the Mavericks, who have plenty of depth after adding players like Klay Thompson and Spencer Dinwiddie but will miss Dante Exum after the Australian guard had wrist surgery, Vinnie and Ice talk about the Orlando Magic's defense and their need to add a point guard to their starting lineup. After last night's win over the Connecticut Sun, the Minnesota Lynx earned a spot in the NBA Finals against the New York Liberty. These are the two best teams in the league, by record, but the Lynx have had the Liberty's number this season. Find out who Ice is predicting will win the series and what you should be looking for. Finally, the 2024 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class is getting ready to be inducted this weekend, and Vinnie has thoughts. Vince Carter and Chauncey Billups make sense, as two players who are maybe underappreciated for their greatness, but Michael Cooper? Walter Davis is given some love as a dominant scorer who played in a league that was very different than it is today. On November 2nd, 2023, six-time NBA All-Star Walter Davis died of natural causes while visiting family in Charlotte. Today, I welcome back Adam Beechen - a great friend of the show. We discuss Walter's life on-and-off the basketball court.Amidst his innumerable accomplishments, Davis was certainly no stranger to adversity. Despite battling substance abuse for the majority of his Phoenix Suns tenure, Walter averaged 20-or-more points per season in six of his 11 campaigns in the Valley of the Sun.A quick sidebar. Per Basketball Reference.com, on July 6, 1988, Walter Davis was the second player in NBA history to sign as an unrestricted free agent. He joined the Denver Nuggets one day after another would-be Suns legend, Tom Chambers, signed w/ Phoenix. In the lead-up to recording this conversation, I put out a call for listener contributions. Tim Gallagher kindly answered the bell. Tim has collected sports autographs for more than 50 years and is a Consignment Director for Robert Edward Auctions. You'll hear Tim's reflections on Walter Davis as an interlude within the episode. Tim will also feature as a future guest on my podcast. He has a wealth of incredible stories to tell.RIP, Walter Davis. Erroll Reese and Phil Ford on the breaking news of Walter’s passing and their relationship with him. Who was Walter to UNC? What was he like behind the scenes?   CHAPEL HILL – Walter Davis, an all-star at the University of North Carolina and in the NBA, a member of the United States gold-medal winning Olympic basketball team in 1976 and uncle of UNC head coach Hubert Davis, passed away this morning of natural causes while visiting family in Charlotte, N.C. Davis (69) was one of the best shooters in Carolina basketball history. A member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Pineville, N.C., native was a two-time All-ACC honoree in 1976 and as a senior in 1977, when he led the Tar Heels to an ACC Tournament title and appearance in the NCAA championship game. He scored 1,863 points, grabbed 670 rebounds and had 409 assists playing for head coach Dean Smith. This season is the 50th anniversary of Davis’s 25-foot shot at the buzzer against Duke that capped an eight-point comeback in the final 17 seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime, where the Tar Heels won. It is one of the most iconic moments in college basketball and, even as a freshman, cemented his place in Carolina Basketball history.   Davis won NBA Rookie-of-the-Year honors with the Phoenix Suns in 1978. He was a five-time NBA All-Star and the Suns retired his No. 6.   STEVE KIRSCHNER University of North Carolina Senior Associate A.D. for Sports Information & Media Relations

With all the "Sonnys" in Jazz, especially those who are saxophone players, one who seems always to be forgotten is William "Sonny" Criss. He is tonight's Jazz feature artist. Sonny had been around for a few years but his career was rather spotty but in 1965 he sent a demo tape to Prestige Record's producer Don Schlitten and Sonny was signed to a contract and recorded seven superb albums for Prestige from 1966 to 1969. We hear his initial date tonight recorded in RVG Studio on October 21,1966, 2 days before Sonny's 39th Birthday. Sonny appears with Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and the magnificent Alan Dawson on drums. The repertoire of 8 tunes is mostly standards but Walter Davis composed one and Sonny composed one also. As the cover of the album states "here is an alto saxophonist whose consummate artistry approaches perfection". That quote is no exaggeration and I'm sure you'll agree.

We'll be learning about how they're using XR to train technicians and speed up their time to competency, for new and existing employees. All that and more on the XR for Business podcast. Walter, welcome to the show. Walter: Thanks, Alan. Glad to be here. Alan: Really excited. Why don't you start by telling us your role at Aggreko and how you started working in XR in this role? I think first thing to do might help to paint a picture of maybe what Aggreko does, which will help in then showing how we're applying augmented reality to our services. So, Aggreko is the largest provider of temporary power and cooling solutions. We work in over 100 countries and we power things like Super Bowl here in the US, which many of you might know, or the Olympics that are coming up in Japan. That's another project we're doing. Just ensuring that major events and operations run smoothly. And with that, obviously, we need to ensure that we are providing an expert service and minimize any potential downtime. We need to have expert staff to support that. Alan: So basically, if the lights stay on, you guys are there. Walter: Exactly. That's a great way of putting it. I mean, that's where we will pop up on occasion. Actually, I could say that we are actually in one-- we're in a recent country music video in the background, because we are powering the stage that they recorded the music video at. But yeah, like I said, keeping the lights on, making sure that entertainment can happen, events can happen, and everybody has a comfortable experience. Alan: So how does VR/AR/XR relate to temporary power? Walter: With the nature of our business -- as we operate in over 100 countries -- we operate very broadly but very agilely. And one of the challenges that we tend to sometimes have is ensuring that we can bring new hires and products together really in that introductory period of time, when someone is just joining the organization. We don't always necessarily have every type of fleet available for them to familiarize themselves with and educate themselves on, to start developing those competencies. And where we're seeing AR in particular, is in allowing those individuals to gain that knowledge really right when they join the organization. They're able to go through an immersive experience in full scale, so as if the product was right in front of them. Going-- both familiarizing themselves with the key components and aspects of the product, but also going through a key service procedures th

“Each day, each event measured in hours, minutes, seconds and then lost to eternity. A precious few are not. They linger, committed to memory, treasured. This rivalry is just that, timeless.” Those are the words of Freddie Kiger ’74, ’77 (M.A.) describing Carolina’s rivalry with Duke. It’s a subject he knows well, having watched about 100 basketball games between them from courtside. While finalizing his master’s degree in history, Kiger began working with the men’s basketball team as a statistician. The first time he worked a Carolina-Duke game in Chapel Hill was on March 2, 1974. That game featured a Carolina comeback from eight points down with only 17 seconds to play. Walter Davis made a buzzer-beater to send the game to overtime, which the Tar Heels then won comfortably. “I thought Carmichael’s roof was going to collapse,” Kiger said. On Saturday, as Carolina hosts Duke in the latest installment of the rivalry, Kiger will be at the scorer’s table relaying statistics to the television broadcasters. He’s worked with ESPN, CBS, NBC and other networks for major events like the Olympics and the X-Games, but nothing, he said, compares to a Carolina game against Duke because of the success of both men’s basketball programs. “Let’s just talk NCAA titles,” Kiger said. “You’re talking about two schools eight miles apart who have won 11 national championships. That’s staggering.” On this week’s episode, Kiger will share the stories he’s accumulated over nearly 50 years of being involved with Carolina basketball and what he’s learned along that journey.

On this episode of Rendering Unconscious, I speak with Dr. Walter A. Davis, Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University. He is an actor and playwright, as well as psychoanalyst and theoretician. His many books include Art and Politics: Psychoanalysis, Ideology, Theatre. Pluto Press, London, 2007; Death's Dream Kingdom: The American Psyche Since 9-11. Pluto Press, London, 2006; Get the Guests: Psychoanalysis, Modern American Drama, and the Audience. Madison: U of Wisconsin P, 1993; and Inwardness and Existence: Subjectivity in/and Hegel, Heidegger, Marx, and Freud. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1989. He describes his current work in this way: "My work, which is of a broadly interdisciplinary nature, has two unifying purposes: (1) a critique of the assumptions and concepts that underlie the humanistic traditions and (2) the construction of a radically new foundation for humanistic inquiry. That foundation is existentially grounded in what Paul Ricoeur calls "the subjectivity of the subject." It is thus dedicated to a discovery of the psychological motives that shape every act of interpretation and an explanation of why those motives have been so persistently neglected and denied. My goal is to construct a process of reflection that challenges the understanding we have of ourselves and our activities. The series of books that I've written in pursuit of this project constitute a single order of thought, a dialectical unity of progressive complication in which each book concludes with the problem that the next book addresses." Walter Davis Jr. was a pianist of major stature who had been unfairly overlooked. He appeared on many Blue Note dates but only made this one called "Davis Cup". This wraps up our month long series of Jazz Features that spotlighted artists who only made one album under their name for Blue Note. Walter was a classically trained pianist who was influenced by Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk but brought his own concept to the table. He was also a fine composer of hip. hummable and melodic tunes. This album represents to this writer a summing up as it were of New York Jazz before it changed with the arrival of Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Eric Dolphy etc. This is a well planned and well-rehearsed date and 6 of Walter's compositions are featured. The people involved are hand picked by Walter and represent his favorite players, Donald Byrd is on trumpet and the great Jackie McLean is on alto saxophone. The blend of Byrd and McLean has always been one of the best combinations. On bass is the mighty Sam Jones and on drums is the ubiquitous Arthur Taylor. "Davis Cup" hits the ball over the net ever time and every tune! Walter Davis Jr. packed a lot of music into his 57 years when he was with us and this album is a delight.

Alice Echols is a professor of history and the Barbra Streisand Chair of Contemporary Gender Studies at the University of Southern California. In her book Shortfall: Family Secrets, Financial Collapse and a Hidden History of American Banking (New Press, 2017) Echols offers a narrative and social history of American capitalism in the years of and preceding the Great Depression by focusing not on Wall Street but on Main Street and the men who ran hundreds of small-town building and loan associations across the nation. Situated in Colorado Springs she reconstructs the life of her shrewd and ambitious grandfather Walter Davis, who emerged from virtually nowhere to become a small town finance man running the City Savings Building and Loan Association. He gained and betrayed the trust of hundreds of depositors who invested their life savings to secure the American dream of homeownership and financial security. They found their lives destroyed by an unregulated industry and Davis’s dishonest practices. Shortfall is both the story of American capitalism told from the bottom up and of Echols uncovering her own family secrets of ill-gotten gain, decadence, scandal, loss, and ultimate despair that reflected the lives of millions across the nation. Shortfall offers lessons in the dangers associated with small-town finance men, land speculators, depositors in denial, ill-equipped investigators, inexperienced judges and an unregulated financial marketplace. We take a look at multiple-time NBA All-Stars who were big deals in their day but have been somewhat forgotten or overlooked with the passage of time in the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast. Co-hosts Jason Mann and Rich Kraetsch first discuss some of elite superstars of their day: Larry Foust, an 8-time all-star who led the Fort Wayne Pistons to back-to-back NBA Finals in 1955 and 1956 and has the highest Basketball Reference probability score for someone who is not in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame; Alonzo Mourning, who was among top best centers in the NBA for the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat before a kidney ailment limited him in the second half of his career; Harry "The Horse" Gallatin, an iron man and rebounding savant for the New York Knicks that went to three straight NBA Finals from 1951-53; Amar'e Stoudemire, an elite offensive force who helped make the 2000s "Seven Seconds or Less" Phoenix Suns go before injuries caught up to him with the Knicks; and Neil Johnston, a top big man of the 1950s who consistently was near the top of the league in points, rebounds and PER and led the Philadelphia Warriors to the 1956 championship. We also look at some overlooked 1980s favorites like the Denver Nuggets scoring machine Alex English, Seattle Supersonics big man Jack Sikma (another major Hall of Fame oversight), sweet shooting Phoenix Suns star Walter Davis, and the versatile Milwaukee Bucks swingman Marques Johnson. Plus some 1990s and 2000s stars: how Tim Hardaway succeeded in vastly different teams with the Run TMC Golden State Warriors and the grind-it-out Heat, how Shawn Kemp was much more than a dunker for the Sonics, and how Jermaine O'Neal's six-year peak stands with some of the best in NBA history. We also investigate the careers of multi-time 1950s and 1960s NBA All-Stars Don Ohl, Dick Garmaker and Mel Hutchins. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ralph Peterson Jr. is a renowned American jazz musician and a full-time professor at the Berklee School of Music. I met Ralph at our Taekwondo school in 2005. Both of us still practice regularly at O'Malley Tae Kwon Do Center. Ralph often volunteers his time to teach drumming to children during Summer and Winter camps at the TKD school.  All the kids thoroughly enjoyed Ralph's teaching very much. I remember seeing their faces pressed up against the school's window waiting for Ralph to arrive with this truck full of drum sets and equipment. Ralph believes that it's his responsibility to pass his knowledge to the next generation. Passing down his knowledge is the way for Ralph to preserve the traditions he loves."In order to keep a gift, you have to be willing to give it away." Speaking from his experience, Ralph has apprenticed under some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time including Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Elvin Jones, and Walter Davis. It is also important to study some of the less known drummers who may not be household names as part of the continuum of our music history. "Once you understand this process, you will have a better sense of what the possibilities are going forward. If not, you can 'bump into' things by accident, and you might even become popular." Ralph says, "What's most important to me is to help my students sustain a 30-year career in music, not just releasing a single record." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

This album is one of alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's masterpieces. It is his first full-blown venture into some unknown territory. When McLean signed with Blue Note in 1959, he was basically a "straight-ahead" bebopper of the 2nd generation but the winds of change in Jazz were blowing in the early 60's with the arrival of Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Eric Dolphy et al. Mclean was hearing this and his playing began to open up and move away from the strict rigors of bop. This album called "Let Freedom Ring!" was the real beginning of that search. The ideal and open rhythm section consisted of the wonderful Walter Davis jr. at the piano who anchors McLean with his beautiful chording and sensitivity. Bassist Herbie Lewis and drummer Billy Higgins were both from Los Angeles and were boyhood friends. Higgins had just left Ornette Coleman's band and was the perfect drummer of this set. Jackie McLean with his distinctive sound ("no sugar added") and his hard driving approach and his "take no prisoners" attitude makes the four pieces really happen. Three of McLean's tunes are dedicated to members of his family. This first is the Mingus-like "Melody For Melonae" for his then young daughter. The second is called "Rene" for his son. The third and most interesting is the modal "Omega" for his mother. The ballad of the set is by one of McLean's mentors, pianist Bud Powell and it's called "I'll Keep Loving You". This classic album captures everyone in full flight and was the first of many groundbreaking dates from Mclean and company. "Let Freedom Ring!"
