I'm Stacey Simms and every other Friday I bring you a short episode with the top diabetes stories and headlines happening now. XX Of course, World Diabetes Day was yesterday. November 14 marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting. who discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922. Lots of the tech companies are taking action.. I'm going to link up a great article highlighting what many of them are doing…. from Medtronics Blue Balloon challenge to Dexcom's Nick Jonas video and a lot more. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/world-diabetes-day-2024/ XX A new triple combo therapy could restore insulin production in people with type 1 using existing medications. Levicure's triple-combo oral therapy is already considered very safe, because it involves two drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a well-known supplement. The therapy is a combination of: DPP4-inhibitors, a common type 2 diabetes medication Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), a drug for severe acid reflux A proprietary version of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a supplement often used to treat anxiety Levicure says the combined effect can block beta cell destruction, suppress autoimmunity, and restore beta cell function. So far, Levicure's triple therapy has gone through only one retrospective chart review; it has not been put to the test in a randomized controlled trial https://www.diabetesdaily.com/blog/can-this-triple-combo-oral-therapy-restore-insulin-production-733261/   XX Blue Circle Health is expanding it's unique approach to type 1 care. Already active in Florida, Maine & Vermont, it will now be in Delaware and Ohio. Blue Circle Health is free and develops a personalized care plan for each participant, tailored to their unique needs, and offers comprehensive multidisciplinary support over a six-month period. It's paid for by the Helmsley Charitable Trust. The program is available to people 18 years of age and older that speak Spanish or English, regardless of insurance coverage or citizen status. We've got an upcoming podcast episode all about Blue Circle coming up soon. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/blue-circle-health-expands-to-delaware-and-ohio-to-address-health-system-barriers-to-type-1-diabetes-care-and-education-302304170.html XX An international team of experts has created the world's first evidence-based guide for eating lower and low carb. The group says until now, people with type 1 diabetes and their healthcare providers have lacked comprehensive resources to help implement this approach safely and effectively. The guide provides essential information for dietitians and nutritionists and empowers them to work collaboratively with individuals and families who are interested in reducing carbohydrates. It's free and we've got the download link in the show notes. https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/international-team-launches-first-guide-for-carbohydrate-reduction-in-type-1-diabetes-883729104.html XX A new pump system is available in Canada. mylife YpsoPump insulin pump and CamAPS FX hybrid closed-loop algorithm by Health Canada. mylife Loop consists of the mylife YpsoPump, a lightweight intuitive insulin pump, integrated with the CamAPS FX hybrid closed-loop, a mobile phone-based algorithm, and the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System. Working together, these components provide an innovative, automated insulin delivery (AID) system designed to simplify insulin therapy and improve glycemic control for Canadians living with diabetes.   "The approval of the mylife YpsoPump and CamAPS FX marks an important milestone as we bring these advanced technologies to the Canadian market," said Sébastien Delarive, Chief Business Officer of Ypsomed Diabetes Care. "Although Ypsomed is relatively new in Canada, our established leadership in diabetes care throughout Europe provides a solid foundation for delivering innovative solutions to Canadians living with type 1 diabetes."   "We are excited to see both mylife YpsoPump and CamAPS FX approved," said Karina Schneider, General Manager at Ypsomed Canada. "This step brings us closer to offering an integrated solution that will help simplify diabetes management for Canadian patients, empowering them to take more control of their health." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ypsomed-camdiab-receive-health-canada-205500840.html XX The FDA updates the labels for all GLP-1 receptor agonists with a warning about pulmonary aspiration during general anesthesia or deep sedation. The affected drugs are semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy); liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza); and the dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). the Medication Guide section of the label also has new additions. Patients are counseled to tell their healthcare provider if they are scheduled to have surgery or other procedures that use anesthesia or deep sleepiness (deep sedation). They are alerted that the GLP-1 RAs they are taking may cause serious side effects, including food or liquid getting into the lungs during surgery or other procedures that use anesthesia or deep sedation. Patients are advised to tell all their healthcare providers that they are taking a GLP-1 RA before they are scheduled to have surgery or other procedures. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/fda-updates-glp-1-label-pulmonary-aspiration-warning-2024a1000k84?form=fpf XX Following an impressive data drop this summer highlighting the potential for Eli Lilly's tirzepatide to stave off progression to Type 2 diabetes in prediabetic patients, the Indianapolis-based drugmaker is laying out full results from its longest completed study of the dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist to date. In the three-year SURMOUNT-1 trial, tirzepatide curbed the risk of disease progression to Type 2 diabetes by 94% versus placebo in adult prediabetes patients who were obese or overweight, Lilly said in a release Wednesday. The number represents a pooled result from three tirzepatide doses (5 mg, 10 mg and 15 mg) studied in the trial.   Putting those results into perspective, one new case of diabetes could be prevented for every nine patients treated with tirzepatide, which is marketed in the U.S. as Mounjaro for Type 2 diabetes and as Zepbound for obesity, Lilly said. https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/lilly-unwraps-detailed-data-showing-tirzepatide-kept-nearly-99-pre-diabetic-patients XX Edgparke commeical? XX https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-10-25/apple-secretly-tests-blood-sugar-app-in-sign-of-health-ambitions XX XX And finally, many of you have likely already heard but we had some incredibly tragic news in the diabetes community, especially for the Breakthrough T1D ride community. I'm going to read from the Breakthrough T1D website: The leadership, staff, and volunteers of Breakthrough T1D mourn the tragic, sudden loss of five T1D Champions on Friday, Nov. 1, 2024.  Jeff and Michelle Bauer, Josh and Tammy Stahl and Barry Sievers were all killed in a singe car crash. The group included two married couples and one single individual—all very close friends and veteran Breakthrough T1D Ride participants. Of this incredibly impactful group, I knew Michelle Bauer personally, I met her as Michelle Alswager – you may know her as Jesse's mom. Her son, Jesse died from complications of type 1 in 2010. And that year, mile 23 on the JDRF ride was created as a mile of silence in memory of Jesse.  Now all riders are asked to ride in silence for that mile not only in memory of Jesse, but all those lost to type 1 diabetes. Michelle wrote her book, Jesse Was Here and created a program that's part of Beyond Type 1 to this day, all to help other families going through grief. She called me a few years ago when she was thinking of writing her book and I'm so grateful for our conversations and that our conversations may have helped her get it out there into a world where it's so needed. But we need Michelle here to talk about grief. More about talking to Michelle about the book).   Please, write the book, ride the bike, do the ironman, follow your heart and your dreams.  All of these incredible people gone too soon. https://www.breakthrought1d.org/news-and-updates/breakthrough-t1d-mourns-tragic-sudden-loss-of-five-ride-champions/   Thanks for joining me..

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hechosecuador/message

One hundred years ago in November, two Canadian researchers at the University of Toronto, Frederick Banting and Charles Best, discovered insulin, the life-saving drug for people with diabetes. What was once a death sentence is today a manageable condition with a tubeless insulin pump, and potentially oral insulin not far down the road. The rate of diagnosis of type 1 and type 2 diabetes has surged among the U.S. youth population between 2001 and 2017. Data published Aug. 2021 shows a 45% increase in the number of children and youth under age 20 living with type 1 diabetes, while the number of children and youth living with type 2 diabetes climbed by 95%. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) points to studies that estimate five million people in the U.S. to have T1D by 2050, including nearly 600,000 youth. But racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in blood-glucose outcomes among ethnic and racial minorities exist, as reported in the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange (T1DX) Research Registry and SEARCH study cohorts. In Connecticut, Medicaid covered 1156 children and youth below age 20 for type 1 diabetes in 2021, and 928 for type 2 diabetes, per the latest data. The HUSKY Health / Medicaid program covered 408,082 children and youth below the age of 20 for 2021, year to date. In the centenary year of Insulin, the inconvenient truth is that one in two people living with diabetes in the world are unable to access or afford insulin, according to the International Diabetes Federation. Making an impassioned pitch, diabetologist Dr. V Mohan calls for insulin to be made available to anyone who needs it. Especially so, since Frederick Banting and Charles Best, who discovered insulin, believed it was meant “for the world” and sold their patent for one dollar! As World Diabetes Day (November 14th) comes up, Dr. Mohan explains how diabetes is now being seen in rural areas and economically-weaker communities, and younger age groups. I'm Stacey Simms and these are the top diabetes stories and headlines of the past seven days.  I'm on the road, so apologies if the audio and video are a little bit off but I think we're good enough. And As always, I'm going to link up my sources in the Facebook comments – where we are live – and in the show notes at d-c dot com when this airs as a podcast.. so you can read more when you have the time. XX Lots of articles, op-eds and celebrations to mark this week's 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. In July of 1921, the collaboration of Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip and John Macleod led to the isolation and purification of insulin. Most marking the occasion this year are focusing on access and affordability.. The International Diabetes Federation is launching a three year campaign to celebrate the advances made in diabetes, but also to call on more action to ensure all people living with diabetes have the best possible quality of life and health outcomes. https://insulin100.utoronto.ca/ XX The largest and most diverse genetic study of type 1 diabetes ever undertaken is complete. Researchers at UVA say they've identified the “most likely causal genetic variants associated with risk and their target genes.” They hope the results will help lead to better medical and drug treatment or possible prevention and genetic treatments. This study looked at more than 60-thousand people. and identified 78 regions on our chromosomes where genes are located that influence our risk for Type 1 diabetes. Of those, 36 regions were previously unknown. https://news.virginia.edu/content/largest-ever-type-1-diabetes-genetic-study-identifies-potential-treatment-targets XX New partnership announced between LifeScan the glucose monitoring company and Noom, a digital health platform focused on behavior change. LifeScan will be the first digital health diabetes management company to partner with  Noom's Diabetes Support Program. The goal is to bring personalized health insights to better address eating habits and weight management. The new fully-integrated OneTouch Solutions program will be available first to consumers in the US starting this Fall. https://www.lifescan.com/news-and-updates/2020-press-releases/noom-to-launch-digital-diabetes-and-weight-loss XX AstraZeneca gets approval for its once weekly diabetes medicine  Bydureon in kids as young as ten.   The injectable is used for people with type 2 diabetes. The approval comes about a month after data showed the drug significantly reduced blood glucose levels in adolescents compared to placebo. Bydureon is already approved for adults with type-2. The only other non-insulin options available for adolescents with type 2 have to be taken daily. https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/astrazenecas-weekly-once-diabetes-drug-gets-us-approval-children-2021-07-23/ XX Rice University bioengineers are using 3D printing and smart biomaterials to create an insulin-producing implant. The three-year project is supported by a grant from JDRF. They researchers will use insulin-producing beta cells made from human stem cells to create an implant that senses and regulates blood glucose levels by responding with the correct amount of insulin at a given time. The goal here is to show their implants can properly regulate blood glucose levels of diabetic mice for at least six months. So we're really early on here but it's an interesting new way of looking at reproducing what the pancreas does. https://indiaeducationdiary.in/rice-university-rice-team-creating-insulin-producing-implant-for-type-1-diabetes/ XX A judge rules that Roche did NOT infringe Insulet's patent – this case brought over a patch pump sold in the UK. We told you about this case a few weeks back.. Insulet claimed because of it's Omnipod patent, Roche didn't have the right to sell it's Accu Chek Solo. The judge ruled for Roche. https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/roche-diabetes-care-succeeds-in-uk-3307644/ XX An Olympic hopeful with type 1 is sitting out the Tokyo games due to an injury.. but she's also inspiring others and starting a new non profit to help other people with diabetes. Long jumper Kate Hall Harnden was on track for the 2020 Olympics, but was injured this past January Diagnosed at age ten, she and her husband have formed the DiaStrong Foundation, which aims to give financial assistance to people with diabetes who want to improve in their sport and diabetes management. They've planned to launch grants for financial assistance in July 2021, and those details are being finalized. They'll host two camps in Maine this year.. one for teens and one for any age. I've linked up to a great story in DiabetesMine if you want more info..   https://www.healthline.com/diabetesmine/kate-hall-diabetes-olympic-hopes XX That's In the News for this week.. if you like it, please share it! And join me wherever you get podcasts for our next episode -Tuesday –  I'm talking to Omnipod – we'll get a update on the Omnipod 5 with Horizon system. This week's interview – the one that's out right now – is with Gold Medal Olympian Gary Hall Jr – when he was diagnosed in 1999 he was told to give up swimming. He didn't and he talks about why.. and how he overcame what was conventional wisdom for athletes at the time. Thanks and I'll see you soon

You've probably heard that Banting and Best gave away the patent for Insulin for one dollar. But why did they do that? And did it achieve what they wanted? We often associate being successful with being profitable. And for a lot of enterprises that is true. But what if your goal is to win the second world war, and you do, but you go bankrupt in the process… is that a ‘success?' What if your goal is to save a lot of people's lives, and the only way to do that is to also make a lot of money? Does that sound like a contradiction? The truth is the relationship between ‘social good,' and ‘good business' is messy. We dig deep into this idea of morality, profits and what it really means to ‘do the right thing.' These science stories from history shed light on the modern research being done on Type 2 Diabetes. Specifically, we highlight the work of SciMar as they examine the hormone HISS - Hepatic Insulin Sensitizing Substance - and the effect it has on glucose levels in people who are insulin resistant. www.SciMar.ca

Startups are audacious. They’re big. They’re world-changing. But you can’t achieve scale on day one. Sometimes the best way to achieve that monumental success tomorrow is to take a teeny tiny step today. This is what Charles Best did when he founded one of the world’s first crowdfunding platforms, DonorsChoose. For 20 years, the nonprofit has been helping public school teachers get funding and supplies for classroom projects and it all started with just a handful of projects in the Bronx, where Charles was a public school teacher. Now it funds thousands of projects in all 50 states, raising almost a billion dollars in the process. Charles did it by adeptly creating a flywheel that matches for donors and grantees, allowing them to connect directly with one another, and doing it all one small step at a time. People are altruistic – even more so in times of uncertainty. DonorsChoose CEO Charles Best has learned this through 20 years of leading his nonprofit through the terrorist attacks of 9/11, multiple recessions, and now a pandemic. Charles knows how to listen to what grantees really need – and donors really want — and how to pivot to address changing needs. In the last few weeks, DonorsChoose has completely reimagined how it connects grantees with the resources they need, and built a new platform to do it. Because the value of a donation, he says, goes far beyond what money can buy. Go to https://www.donorschoose.org/coronavirus to find a project you want to fund. Today's inspiring guests are from DonorsChoose.org, CEO and Founder Charles Best and entrepreneur Oliver Hurst-Hiller. These two, together with a small group of people, came together and made our world a different place, through crowdfunding. DonorsChoose.org Donorschoose.org is a non-profit which enables teachers who need help to go straight to the public and seek financial assistance. Charles Best, a former high school teacher turned activist founded the organization. Together with Oliver Hurst-Hiller, the Chief Technology Officer of the org, they have pioneered the category of crowdfunding.  “I was like teachers all over the country. I was spending my own money on school supplies for my students. My colleagues are doing the same. We would talk about all the stuff we want our students to have, but we couldn’t go into our own pockets to buy.” - Charles Best Merging Technology with Advocacy Charles Best and Oliver Hurst-Hiller share the current education situation in the US — it is underfunded — and teachers and students need help. In the past, millionaires have been the common benefactors of organizations. Charles, however, thought about regular citizen donors and how their collective power can benefit this cause. Regular donors will have the ability to pick, choose, donate and hear directly from the beneficiaries. All the donors — whether they donated 50 dollars or 5 million dollarngets the same appreciation, feedback, and transparency direct from their beneficiaries. “If the internet/technology can enable a regular person giving 50 bucks to have that experience of directness, transparency, reporting and feedback, something magical might happen and 840 million dollars later, I think it has.” - Oliver Hurst-Hiller The “Philanthropic eBay” Stanford Business School and Amazon dubbed DonorsChoose.org as “the most innovative non-profit.” The organization is for school front-liners who have an idea or project and is seeking microloans to fund it. The organization connects them to patrons and philanthropists.  “The first news story about our site compared us to a philanthropic eBay. That’s the only parallel that they could draw at that time  — with its two-sided marketplace and people connecting.” - Charles Best  Charles Best and Oliver Hurst-Hiller talk more about the organization, crowdfunding. Further, they discussed more on the power-houses backing them up as board of directors. They are Stephen Colbert and LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, to name a few. The price of insulin is iconic — doubling, tripling, multiplying like crazy, for medicine Type 1 diabetics can’t live without. To understand it, we went back almost 100 years and dug up a story of sweaty Canadian researchers — swatting away flies and doing business with probable dog-nappers, on the way to a Nobel Prize… and a deal with corporate pharma.Charles Best and Frederick Banting on the roof of the University of Toronto medical building, petting a dog they probably picked up from some shady character on the street … and whom they would soon sacrifice in the name of science. (Photo courtesy University of Toronto.)We also found hopeful signs out there today, including the folks at the Open Insulin Project in Oakland, California, who are working on their own recipe for insulin, which they hope to share as widely as possible.Anthony Di Franco holds a 3-D printed model of an insulin molecule at Counter Culture Labs in Oakland. (Photo courtesy Anthony Di Franco.)If it sounds crazy — well, we talked with a listener who has hacked together an artificial pancreas from outdated equipment, raw computer parts, and open-source software, all with the help of her fellow “rogue, cowboy hackers,” who are growing in number. So, you never know.Terri Lyman of Arizona shows off the home-made rig that regulates her blood-sugar and insulin levels according to her specifications. Public school teachers post classroom project requests on the site and donors browse project requests and give any amount to the one that inspires them most. In this audio interview with Stanford Center for Social Innovation correspondent Ashkon Jafari, founder Charles Best talks about how he started the organization and what some of its challenges have been along the way.
