Originally aired on March 19, 2018. First, we interviewed Jonathan Bock, President of Grace Hill Media and co-author of The Way Back (number one on Amazon in March). In The Way Back, media and marketing experts Phil Cooke and Jonathan Bock take a hard look at Christians today and reveal that we, as a salesforce, have lost our faith in our product. Where’s the passion, the excitement, and the commitment that two thousand years ago made such improbable and staggering growth possible? We were also joined by Pastor Doug Wilson to discuss why the church should be enraging the culture! You should join Pastor Wilson this April 13th and 14th at the Grace Agenda conference in Moscow, Idaho. It is free, so you have no excuses. In CrossPolitic news, we cover a college student who was kicked out of class for arguing that there are only two genders, and a Rocklin High School teacher who is on paid administrative leave for her views about the national school walk out. Our theme is why logic doesn't work with public education.

Phil Cooke says, "This is your ticket to make the digital revolution work for you. The digital age has changed everything we know about engaging this culture with the gospel message. And now, media producer and consultant Phil Cooke has created the ultimate reference to help pastors and church leaders speak the language of this generation." *Guest Bio: * Phil Cooke is a Media Producer / Writer / Speaker / Coach Helping creative leaders and organizations share their message in today's distracted, media driven culture. Phil Cooke works at the intersection of faith, media, and culture, and he's pretty rare – a working producer in Hollywood with a Ph.D. in Theology. His client list includes studios and networks like Walt Disney, Dreamworks, and USA Network, as well as major Christian organizations from Voice of the Martyrs, Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, The Museum of the Bible, The Salvation Army, The YouVersion Bible app, and many more. He's produced TV and film programming in more than 60 countries around the world, and in the process, been shot at, survived two military coups, fallen out of a helicopter, and in Africa, been threatened with prison. And during that time – through his company Cooke Media Group in Los Angeles, California – he's helped some of the largest Christian and nonprofit organizations in the world use the media to tell their story in a changing, disrupted culture. Phil was Executive Producer of “Let Hope Rise – the Hillsong Movie” released to theaters nationwide, and Producer of “The Insanity of God” a feature documentary that premiered nationally as a Fathom Event. According to former CNN journalist Paula Zahn, Phil is rare – a working producer in Hollywood with a Ph.D. in Theology. He's appeared on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, and his work has been profiled in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. His book “One Big Thing: Discovering What You Were Born to Do” helps you find the great purpose and calling for your life – and was named by the Washington Post as one of the Top Five Business Books for 2012. His book, “Unique: Telling Your Story in the Age of Brands and Social Media” is changing the way churches, ministries, and nonprofits engage today's culture with their story. Co-written with Jonathan Bock, “The Way Back: How Christians Blew Our Credibility and How We Win it Back” takes a hard look at why today—particularly in the media—Christians are dismissed as irrelevant. Cooke and Bock show the Christian community how we can once again astonish our critics, and in doing so, completely transform the world for good. His book is “Maximize Your Influence: How to Make Digital Media Work for Your Church, Your Ministry, and You” is the ultimate reference book for pastors and Christian leaders in today's digital age.

"Why did the Early Church succeed where we are failing? How did they transform the Western world in such a relatively short time? They did it because they did things that baffled the Romans. The Early Church didn't picket, they didn't boycott, and they didn't gripe about what was going on in their culture. They just did things that astonished the Romans. They took in their abandoned babies. They helped their sick and wounded. They restored dignity to the slaves. They were willing to die for what they believed. After a while, their actions so softened the hearts of the Romans that they wanted to know more about who these Christians were and who was the God they represented. Without confrontation, protest, or debate, love did its work." -Phil Cooke and Jonathan Bock

Phil was Executive Producer of “Let Hope Rise – the Hillsong Movie” released to theaters nationwide, and Producer of “The Insanity of God” a feature documentary that premiered nationally as a Fathom Event. He’s appeared on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, and his work has been profiled in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. His book “Jolt!: Get the Jump on a World That’s Constantly Changing” shares his secrets of making today’s culture of disruption and change work for you. “One Big Thing: Discovering What You Were Born to Do” helps you find the great purpose and calling for your life – and was named by the Washington Post as one of the Top Five Business Books for 2012. His book, “Unique: Telling Your Story in the Age of Brands and Social Media” is changing the way churches, ministries, and nonprofits engage today’s culture with their story. His latest book co-written with Jonathan Bock is “The Way Back: How Christians Blew Our Credibility and How We Get it Back.” It takes a hard look at why today—particularly in the media—Christians are dismissed as irrelevant. Cooke and Bock show the Christian community how we can once again astonish our critics, and in doing so, completely transform the world for good.   He’s lectured at universities like Yale, University of California at Berkeley, UCLA, and is currently a visiting professor at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition to writing his blog at philcooke.com, he’s contributed to The Huffington Post, Fast Company, Forbes.com, Wired.com, and FoxNews.com. Phil is on the Advisory Board for The Salvation Army, a Board Member of Image Journal and The Hollywood Prayer Network and has been a long time member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and The Producers Guild of America in Hollywood.

Poet T.S. Eliot wrote in 1948: “It is against a background of Christianity that all our thought has significance.”  Fast forward to 2016, and we find the writing of Mary Eberstadt in her book “It’s Dangerous to Believe,” in which she writes: “In many influential cultural, political and intellectual precincts, C for Christian has become the new scarlet letter.”  Then in 2017, one former presidential candidate even suggested that Christians are unfit for political office because they are so hateful. What happened?  That’s the question at hand in a book co-written by Phil Cooke and Jonathan Bock called: “The Way Back: How Christians Blew Our Credibility and How We Win It Back.” In this episode, Dr. Phil Cooke, perhaps the only Hollywood producer with a doctorate in theology, shares more about the book and what he found to be the central issue. Christians are dismissed as irrelevant not because of a marketing problem, he said, but a salesforce problem. Often times, Christians are simply not living as we are called to live. Phil works at the intersection of faith, media and culture as a filmmaker, writer, media consultant and co-founder and CEO of Cooke Pictures, with productions in over 60 countries. He regularly advises churches and corporations on their cultural influence and in this book advises the Christian community at large on how we can astonish our critics and transform the world for good. So if Christians are being discredited in America now, after centuries of being so respected, what changed? What are the implications for the spiritual integrity and future of our kids? And what can we, as parents, do about it? An internationally known filmmaker, writer, and media consultant, Phil Cooke has produced media programming in more than 60 countries around the world. He has created and produced many of the most influential and successful Christian and inspirational TV programs in history, and his book, Unique: Telling Your Story in the Age of Brands and Social Media, is changing the way church and ministry leaders engage today's culture with the gospel. In addition to writing his popular blog at philcooke.com, he also blogs for The Huffington Post and has been a contributor to Fast Company, Forbes.com, Wired.com, and FoxNews.com. His most recent book is The Way Back–How Christians Blew Our Credibility and How We Get It Back. Co-authored with Jonathan Bock, this book offers a solution to the crisis-level decline in Christianity in today's culture. How Christians Are Being Discredited by False Teaching and Corruption Certain things that happen or are preached within Christian circles can cause the church to be discredited for some Americans today. The evil one can be at his most devious when working within the church. This is something we like to tell the students at Shepherds Hill Academy early on in their time in the program. We believe it is important for the students to know that false teaching and corruption exist within the church sometimes and that Jesus predicted they would. These things were happening while He completed His ministry on earth, and as He mentioned all those years ago, these things will always be around. As we discuss this topic, we also explain how God does great work through the church as well. We have to be diligent in the church, because we know that whatever God is using to accomplish great things, the devil will want to disrupt and discredit. We share this to inform our students about how devious the devil can be. And it isn't just specific churches that the devil attempts to disrupt; things like the media, a tool that can be used to advance the Gospel, can also be targets. For example, when TV preachers focus on collecting money more than sharing the Gospel, Christianity is discredited and seen as a scam in the eyes of many Americans. I'm not saying that all preachers on TV are doing this, but those who are, misrepresent Christianity to a wide audience—something the devil would welcome, I'm sure. Today Phil Cooke and I discuss how entertainment and media are shaping our culture as we cover the following topics: What is the research showing for Christians in America? What are our “other gods” in America? What is the greatest threat to today's church and culture? Why what you and your family are entertained by can be hindering your relationship with the Lord. Why educating your teens in their media habits is a key to their success. How to set appropriate media boundaries. The role the church used to play in Hollywood.
