Welcome to Part 2 of "The Way of Innovation" - Kaihan Krippendorff, where we delve into "The Way" – a journey through the strategic elements that shape the life cycle of innovation. In this episode, we explore the transformative stages of Wood, Fire, and Earth, guided by the wisdom of Sun Tzu and the strategic insights of Kaihan Krippendorff. Wood: Formation Sun Tzu once emphasized the power that comes from formation, comparing it to growing wood and crafting a bow. The Wood phase of innovation demands dedication and faith, as progress may seem slow. Kaihan draws parallels with historical challenges, such as combating scurvy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, illustrating the importance of perseverance when innovation seems still. Discover the Three-Front Battle in this phase: convincing the organization, partners, and users. Learn about the seven tools that build resonance for your innovation, understanding that successful innovations break through resistance on a mental level. Fire: Breakout Once your innovation has formed its structure and attracted key supporters, it crosses the tipping point and enters the "Fire" phase. This is a chaotic yet pivotal stage, where speed, creativity, and understanding competitive behaviour are crucial. Kaihan shares principles such as postponing competitive response, shifting from strategy to tactics, and seizing the unexpected. Examples from Under Armour and Gatorade provide valuable insights into navigating this dynamic phase. Earth: Consolidation The journey through Fire is not complete without successful consolidation in the Earth phase. Companies that navigate Fire but fail at Earth risk losing ownership. Kaihan emphasizes the shift from a fast-paced, unorthodox movement to a more stable stance. Consolidating gains involves slowing the erosion of time and erecting new defenses, as illustrated by the example of Philips and the CD ROM. Understand the importance of reinvention, as the cycle repeats itself. Discover how successful innovations can lock in clients, lock out competition, or lock up resources. Be wary of success, as complacency and arrogance can set in. Learn from the experiences of companies like Infosys, and follow the advice of Carlos Ghosn to avoid letting success mark the end of your story. Join us in exploring the strategic shifts required for long-term success, as Kaihan unveils the secrets to prevent your innovation from running away and shares the final quote that ties together intuition and strategic decision-making. By definition, innovation requires a departure from the way things have traditionally been done. However, due to factors such as fear of the unknown and social pressures, many leaders and organizations tend to rely on known solutions without even considering other options. This can lead to stagnation, which may be devastating for companies in a rapidly changing world. Kaihan Krippendorff, our guest in Episode 147 of The MINDSet Game® podcast, urges leaders to explore the “fourth option.” He defines this concept by explaining that our brains have a tendency to sort things into groups of three – for instance, we may consider three different solutions and then stop looking, because three seems like a complete number. The fourth option represents the innovative ideas (which may seem bold or even crazy at first) that lie beyond the point at which most people have stopped thinking. As an internationally renowned thought leader, consultant, and sought-after keynote speaker on the topics of strategy, growth, and transformation, Kaihan has been recognized by Thinkers50 and ranked by global gurus as among the top 20 management professionals of 2023. With a unique ability to transform difficult concepts into easy-to-understand ideas and practical tools, Kaihan is also the best-selling author of five books and a two-time TEDx speaker whose work has generated over $2.5 billion in annual revenue for many of the world's most recognizable companies. In this week's episode, Kaihan shares the following: A helpful acronym that represents the 5 different conversations you need to have in order to find the fourth option: IDEAS, which stands for imagine, dissect, expand, analyze, and sell Simple shifts of mindset and language that leaders and their teams may find helpful when trying to explore new ideas and open the door for innovation An alternative framework using the elements of metal, water, wood, fire, and earth that can help explain the cycle of innovation and change To learn more about Kaihan, visit his speaker website at https://kaihan.net or his company site at https://outthinker.com, or connect with him on LinkedIn. Artificial intelligence, digitization, robotics, 3D printing, and the rise of purpose-driven enterprises are reconfiguring how industries operate. Are entrepreneurs the main drivers of innovation? Conventionally, the most groundbreaking ideas are thought to come from entrepreneurs and executives. But innovative ideas can come from passionate and driven employees as well, if you know how to unleash the power of their creativity. Without psychological safety, employees won't feel comfortable brainstorming or sharing their ideas out loud with the rest of the group. As a leader, you need to create the conditions that allow your employees to thrive, contribute, feel engaged, and collaborate with one another. Want to encourage innovation in your organization? In the latest episode of The Enlightened Executive podcast, bestselling author Kaihan Krippendorff, shares his process for encouraging innovative ideas and explains how leaders can create a psychologically safe environment to foster creativity in the workplace.

Kaihan Krippendorff is the Founder at Outthinker Strategy Network. He believes the future belongs to those who are bold enough to take charge and embrace change. He sees the strategic patterns in businesses and uses it to increase their sales revenue. He joins fellow disruptor and host KJ Helms to discuss how companies can master innovation. Takeaways: The main ingredient to disruption is having the right language. You want to have the right mindset and go into it with doing something your competitors won't do. You need to be different in order to make noise. Your competitors all may go a certain way but that doesn't mean you can't go against the current. There's been a big change from people at smaller companies to moving to larger companies because larger companies offer them more freedom. There are four major barriers to disruption; Leadership, talent, culture and structure. Coordinate the uncoordinated. Power comes not from control, but from coordination. You want to find ways that you can coordinate something that isn't working as it should. Expanding into other unknown spaces can lead to successful disruption. Amazon took to the internet, Zappos focuses on customer service and Wal-Mart is more about advertising. There are a few advantages a large company can have over a smaller company, such as more resources and room for growth. Quote of the show: 2:35 “It's not about doing something your competitors can't do, it's doing something they won't do something that they will ignore and laugh at. As Gandhi said, ‘first they ignore you, then they laugh at you. Then they fight you, then you win.' So it really begins if we take it back, they're not going to copy me. First they won't conceive of it. Then they won't choose it. Then they won't be able to commit to it, but it starts off with them being able to do it and not doing it.” Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kaihankrippendorff/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Kaihan?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Company Website: https://outthinker.com Ways to Tune In: Amazon Music - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/eccda84d-4d5b-4c52-ba54-7fd8af3cbe87/disruption-interruption Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/disruption-interruption/id1581985755 Google Play - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cub21ueWNvbnRlbnQuY29tL2QvcGxheWxpc3QvODE5NjRmY2EtYTQ5OC00NTAyLThjZjktYWI3YzAwMmRiZTM2LzNiZTZiNzJhLWEzODItNDhhNS04MDc5LWFmYTAwMTI2M2FiNi9kZDYzMGE4Mi04ZGI4LTQyMGUtOGNmYi1hZmEwMDEyNjNhZDkvcG9kY2FzdC5yc3M= Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6yGSwcSp8J354awJkCmJlD Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/disruption-interruption YouTube - https://youtu.be/JOnsnmtvdKY See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Craig Buster is GM of Wild Island in Sparks, NV. Craig started as a go kart attendant and quickly realized that he had something unique to offer. Three decades later he is the GM who works at building a great culture and an amazing facility that both his employees and guests can be proud of. In this interview, Craig discusses ownership culture, learning from failure, and celebrating the wins. Ownership Culture “I love to develop people. I probably fail more than I succeed .” Craig talks a lot about culture and how it not only starts at the top, but that it is driven by what's in the heart. Talk to people as human beings and provide them them the tools and guidance they need to be successful. Being part of the decision-making process is what helps build the culture of ownership according to Craig. He allows his team to give input and debate the pros and cons of the facility's next move. They then get to see how their decisions play out as they are implemented. Craig admits sometimes the suggestions work out, sometimes they don't, but in every instance, the team learns. Learning from failure “When opening a restaurant, that first night you've got to nail and if you don't, you're done.” The ownership at Wild Island allows Craig and his team to make and own many of the decisions that drive the park forward. When asked about his favorite failures, he points to a few decisions that cost the company significant money, but also taught them some valuable lessons. As they looked to expand, they thought that adding a high-end restaurant would be a great addition to their offerings. Ultimately that failed for many reasons, but the lesson that came out of it was to more closely appeal to your demographic, do what you know and listen to your community for what they want. The restaurant space eventually turned into black-light mini golf and is still a popular attraction to this day. Celebrating the wins “You've got to celebrate those wins…you need to stand up and clap, jump up on a table, whatever you need to do.” Craig reveals that previously the team wasn't very good at celebrating wins. They would have a record week, check it off, then move on to the next week. They decided to be a little less humble about their accomplishments and start applying for some industry awards and celebrating the day-to-day wins with their teams. In 2019, Wild Island earned AAMA's Top FEC Award and have been finalists for IAAPA's Top FEC of the World Award. Craig acknowledges that it's a tough industry but it can be very rewarding. “We're creating experiences, and if that doesn't get you excited, it might be time to find another industry.” To learn more about Wild Island, visit: https://wildisland.com/ To contact Craig: CBuster@wildisland.com The annual IAAPA FEC Summit is back! Are you bored of hearing about the negatives of a recession? Well, if you listened to last week's episode with Jack Stack, you'll have heard him share how he's on his fifth Black Swan and how after each one his business doubled. Why are we mentioning this again? Because a recession doesn't necessarily always spell doom and gloom. In fact, today's guest, Dr Kaihan Krippendorff, strategy, growth and transformation expert, keynote speaker, author and consultant is using the time to pivot his business. Kaihan hosted a conference last week with guest speakers including Rita McGrath and Amy Webb, and he's holding another one on 6th May, with guest speakers including Amy Edmondson and Scott Anthony. (Link below). These conferences have given him the seeds of a new business model. They've allowed him and his team to focus on something else right now, they've created new relationships, and they've allowed him to build their audience as well as their brand. So if you're wondering what you can do to fill your days, why not use this time wisely to think about your business strategy, and perhaps take advantage of coronavirus accelerating trends that were already in place? In today's podcast, Kaihan and Dom discuss the tools Kaihan uses with his (mainly) Fortune 500 business clients, and how these tools could also be used by mid-market firms. He also discusses the online conference he ran last week and his top takeaways from it.On today's podcast:How clients find KaihanThe outthinker processWhy it's so hard for humans to be strategicExamples of innovations his clients have been able to driveThe importance of employee self-realisationHow to create a 2x2 matrix for scenario planningLinks:Outthinker 2020Outthink the CompetitionDriving Innovation From Within: A Guide for Internal Entrepreneurs

What are the essentials of innovation within companies? How can businesses encourage and enable innovation? In this episode we tap into the experience of Kaihan, business strategist, author of Driving Innovation From Within.
Conventional business wisdom tells us that entrepreneurs are society’s main source of innovation. Young founders leave college with a big idea, get to work in a garage, and build something that changes the world. Typical corporate employees, strangled by slow-moving bureaucracy, are blocked from making transformative discoveries. Disruption can be a powerful personal tool, but as we discussed during the re-launch of Disrupt Yourself earlier in the month, disruption is not limited to individuals looking to jump into the entrepreneurial life. Significant disruptions can come from within large organizations, leading, as Kaihan Krippendorff pointed out, to important innovation. But how do you disrupt from within a large organization? My guest today is one of the foremost experts on this very topic. A professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and partner at the consulting firm RBL Group, Dave Ulrich has published over 200 articles and 30 books, including his most recent collaboration with Arthur Yeung, Reinventing the Organization. When picturing disruptive innovators, many people picture the lone genius entrepreneur: Steve Jobs or Bill Gates in a garage, working outside of The System to get their product to market. But is this really how great innovations are created and incubated? In Driving Innovation From Within, Author Kaihan Krippendorff delves deep into the 30 most transformative innovations of the last 30 years. What he found was that despite the stereotype it is actually employees that push the boundaries of innovation, and we do a disservice to employees everywhere when we perpetuate the notion that you have to be an entrepreneur to make an impact on the the world. Join us as we discuss Kaihan’s new book, his framework for internal innovation, and what makes a company truly transformative and encouraging of employee innovators. With a breakthrough strategy, you can actually out-think your competition and do something bold – but how do you get there? Today’s show dives into a repeatable process you can implement in your company and culture to naturally create those “aha” moments. Kaihan Krippendorff is the founder of Outthinker, a former McKinsey & Co. consultant, and has written four books on business, strategy, growth, and transformation. Kaihan is committed to helping organizations and individuals thrive in today’s era of fast-paced disruptive technology change. Kaihan has always been fascinated by strategy. When you think about it, good strategy comes down to being a disruptor. How can a group of people come together and create a strategy that will disrupt, rather than be disrupted? How does someone create ‘The Fourth Option,’ as Kaihan likes to call it? There are always great ideas that pop up within a company, but for some reason or another, they do not get pursued. Most of these reasons were not based in fact or strategy, or even in analysis. Great ideas were getting shot down through naysaying from someone on the team or even from the founder. To be a disruptor, it means you hold a belief that is inconsistent with the way business is run in your industry. If you’ve been in your industry long enough, you start developing these rules and beliefs of what will and won’t work. And, people will always choose to hold onto their beliefs, even if it’s to the detriment of the company. This is where the fourth option comes into play. It is really a metaphor and it means that there’s a point in the process where people stop looking for options. What a disruptor does is recognize that their competition has stopped looking — stopped thinking — and looks for a fourth option that will surprise people.
