What makes a brand truly meaningful in people's lives? In this captivating conversation with Dr. Marcus Collins - professor, agency strategist, and cultural marketing expert - we explore how the most powerful brands transcend their product categories to become vessels of meaning in culture.Marcus reveals why brands aren't something we construct but rather what others think of them. Through examples like Patagonia, Nike, and Beyoncé, he illustrates how brands that stand for something beyond their products create deeper connections with people. "They are not defined by what they do," Marcus explains, "They're defined by who they are and how they see the world."The discussion takes a fascinating turn when Marcus unpacks the three levels of empathy in marketing, with cognitive empathy - treating others as they want to be treated rather than how we would want - representing the highest form. This perspective shift from "how do I tap into culture?" to "how do I contribute to culture?" transforms how brands can authentically connect with people.Perhaps most provocatively, Marcus challenges the concept of brand purpose, suggesting that "conviction" provides a more powerful framework. While many brands jumped on social causes when convenient, those with true conviction stand for their principles regardless of consequences. "Speak up when you are convicted, when it really matters," he advises, noting how brands that make strategic decisions based on genuine beliefs rather than opportunism create more meaningful connections. For marketers navigating today's complex landscape, Marcus offers a profound reminder that brands exist as characters in constantly evolving cultural stories. The key to success lies not in rigid control but in authentic participation in culture with humility and curiosity. Listen now to discover how putting humanity first in your marketing can create lasting impact.About Dr Marcus CollinsDr. Marcus Collins is an award-winning marketer and cultural translator with one foot in the world of practice—formerly serving as the Head of Strategy at Wieden+Kennedy, New York—and one foot in the world of academia—as a marketing professor at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. Before joining Wieden+Kennedy, he served as the Chief Consumer Connections Officer at Doner Advertising and led Social Engagement at Steve Stoute's advertising agency, Translation.Over the course of his career, Marcus has developed a practice for creating culturally contagious ideas that inspire people to take action. In this episode of Looking Outside, we're exploring Culture and the role of brands leveraging or influencing it, with University of Michigan marketing professor and best selling author of For the Culture, Dr Marcus Collins.Marcus has one foot in Academia and the other in marketing practice, having led strategy Wieden+Kennedy New York, which allowed him to go deep on the theory and science of culture, while helping brands to understand those systems of cultural norms to activate their marketing strategies in a more relevant and impactful way. To be able to balance the theory and practice, Marcus studied the social sciences, making his knowledge of culture less shallow and deeply nuanced. On the show, Marcus explains how culture is shaped, defined and cultivated by people, to create uniformity and ‘normality'. Because culture is a curation process to find others like us and create synergy in commonalities, Marcus explains that the curation process evolves from the definitions of ‘how to behave' that you're born into (that are ascribed to you), through to the cultures to subscribe to once you're older. Jo and Marcus discuss the challenge for marketers to more deeply understanding human beings, their values and behaviors (which often do not match) in the effort to predict human responses and effectively persuade towards a favorite action for our brands. To achieve this, Marcus' advice is to follow the path of least resistance; to seek out the ‘collective of the willing' as he calls them, those people who are already leaning into the behaviors you're looking to amplify. It's a marketers job to spot those collectives and to reflect in their work things that make these people feel ‘seen'. This requires a certain level of intimacy with the customer that goes beyond easy segmentation by demographics or even psychographics. In a world where brands are more intertwined with popular, social and sometimes political issues, it's important to know what you stand for, your role to play and your right to play in responding to cultural movements (or not responding, purposefully). Marcus stresses that first and foremost brand owners must pay attention to changes in culture, because the mainstream, normal or ‘middle' customer base is not necessarily representative of your future customer. After all, everything that started in the fringes, that was once small or weird, later became popular. >>>To look outside, Marcus speaks to his nine year old daughter to get her transparent and unfiltered perspective. Her responses help Marcus poke a hole in the wall as she usually sees something that he does not see. >>>Dr. Marcus Collins is an award-winning marketer and cultural translator with one foot in the world of practice—serving as the Chief Strategy Officer at Wieden+Kennedy New York—and one foot in the world of academia—as a marketing professor at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. He is the author of For the Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy, What We Do, and Who We Want to Be*. Whether you're in a sales and marketing role or not, every leader needs to appreciate the psychology of why people buy. Often we assume people buy because of what the product or service provides. But as Marcus and I discuss in this episode, people often buy because of who they are. Key Points For getting people to move, nothing is more powerful than aligning with culture. Anaïs Nin said, “We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Audiences buy because of what the product is, but congregations buy because of who they are. Many leaders assume people love their brand -- but it's not really about the brand, it's about how people view themselves. Begin with examining your own thinking and language regarding customer relationships and transactions. How you view these influences the actions of others. What is culture. You probably use the word in conversation and you have a sense of what it means but it is actually a difficult word to define. Here to define it and explain why it is so important to understand what culture is and how it changes is Marcus Collins. He is a clinical assistant professor of marketing at the Ross School of Business, at the University of Michigan and recipient of Advertising Age's 40 Under 40 award. It is a little strange that there is such a fitness craze in America yet so many people are not physically fit at all. The medical evidence is pretty clear that being physically fit and keeping your weight under control is so important to a long and healthy life. So why are so many people not motivated to do it and how can you find the motivation to start if you are not feeling inclined? Joining me to talk about this is Natalia Petrzela. She is an historian of contemporary American politics and culture as well as a fitness instructor and she is author of the book Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America's Exercise Obsession (https://amzn.to/48V5LGb) Is it ever too late to change your life or must you set your course early if you are ever to make something of yourself? Why do we do what we do and buy what we buy? What invisible forces drive those actions - and how can they be seen? Today our guest is Marcus Collins an award-winning marketer and culture translator.  He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Ross School of Business and an award-winning author.  His newest book is For the Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy, What We Do, and Who We Want to Be. Marcus shares how there is no greater external force more influential to human behavior than culture! However, if you ask ten people what culture is you'll get a different answer each time. Marcus explains that you must understand who you are, how you see the world, and what you believe if you are going to create a coherent and positive culture. Marcus's first solo book For the Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy, What We Do, and Who We Want to Be came from his exploration of social sciences to understand better who we are as people and what the underlying physics of why we take the actions we do.  Marcus states that as a marketer we have to gain that understanding to get others to adopt the behavior we are promoting. While launching the book Marcus chose to eat his own dog food, taking the same approach to his book launch as he would launch a client's product.  Building out from understanding the culture the book represents he reached out to former students who embraced the thinking he taught, enlisting them to boost the signal of the book on launch day.  By doing this he created a following of true believers willing to evangelize his book and ideas! Marcus shares smart advice for anyone who feels their culture is lacking clarity or for those who struggle to truly connect to their target audience.  Three Key Takeaways: ·         There is no external force more influential to human behavior than culture. ·         It's about getting your thinking in the hands and minds of more people. ·         If you can activate people with shared convictions, then those people will evangelize on your behalf.

Welcome to The Voice of Retail podcast. I'm producer & host Michael LeBlanc, and this podcast is produced in conjunction with the Retail Council of Canada. Meet Marcus Collins, the architect of some of the most famous ad campaigns of the last decade, who argues that culture is the most powerful vehicle for influencing behaviour in his new book "For the Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy, What We Do, and Who We Want to Be" About MarcusI'm Marcus! I study cultural contagion and meaning-making to help bridge the academic-practitioner gap for companies (from “blue-chip” brands to non-profits) that aim to put ideas in the world that inspire people to take action. When I'm not putting ideas in the world as the Head of Strategy at Wieden+Kennedy New York, I put people in the world as a Clinical Marketing Professor at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. Throughout my career, I've had the great privilege of being acknowledged for my strategic and creative contributions (American Advertising Federation's Advertising Hall of Achievement, Thinkers50 & Deloitt class of 2023 Radar List, and Ad Age's 40 Under 40 recipient, & Crain's Business 40 Under 40 recipient) and launch successful campaigns like “Cliff Paul” for State Farm, the Made In America Music Festival, and Google's “Real Tone” technology—among others.Prior to my tenure in advertising, I worked in music and tech as a startup co-founder (Muse Recordings) and then led iTunes + Nike sport music initiatives at Apple (iTunes Partner Marketing) before running digital strategy for Beyoncé.I am also the author of the best-selling book, For The Culture, which examines the influence of culture on human behavior and unpacks how everyone from marketers to activists can leverage culture to get people to take action. Throughout the book, I rely on literature, case studies, learnings from both my practicing work, and data from my academic work to illustrate the “whys” and the “hows” so that readers will be empowered to successfully apply these learnings to their own pursuits.I am a graduate of Temple University (DBA) and the University of Michigan (BSE in Materials Science Engineering and MBA with an emphasis in strategic brand marketing). But most importantly, I am Alex's husband and Georgia & Ivy's father. About Michael Michael is the Founder & President of M.E. LeBlanc & Company Inc. and a Senior Advisor to Retail Council of Canada and the Bank of Canada as part of his advisory and consulting practice. He brings 25+ years of brand/retail/marketing & eCommerce leadership experience with Levi's, Black & Decker, Hudson's Bay, Today's Shopping Choice and Pandora Jewellery.   Michael has been on the front lines of retail industry change for his entire career. He has delivered keynotes, hosted fire-side discussions with C-level executives and participated worldwide in thought leadership panels. ReThink Retail has added Michael to their prestigious Top Global Retail Influencers list for 2023 for the third year in a row. Michael is also the president of Maven Media, producing a network of leading trade podcasts, including Canada's top retail industry podcast, The Voice of Retail. He produces and co-hosts Remarkable Retail with best-selling author Steve Dennis, now ranked one of the top retail podcasts in the world. Based in San Francisco, Global eCommerce Leaders podcast explores global cross-border issues and opportunities for eCommerce brands and retailers. Last but not least, Michael is the producer and host of the "Last Request Barbeque" channel on YouTube, where he cooks meals to die for - and collaborates with top brands as a food and product influencer across North America.

“Do not allow the circumstance to dictate your future; you are the creator of your future.”   In this episode, I spoke with the incredible Deven Rodriguez. He is an inspiring life coach, army officer, author, and host of The One Life Podcast. He is so passionate about helping others understand more about themselves to progress and reach their goals in life. He will be sharing his inspiring life journey and the valuable life lessons he gathered from it.    Let’s dive right into this episode and learn more about perseverance, creating your future, and the law of attraction.   [00:01 – 04:00] Opening Segment I introduce our guest, Deven Rodriguez. I talk about how we met. Deven shares his background and childhood story. He was born and raised in NYC. Left by his biological father Deven shares about his stepfather, who later became his coach and mentor.   [04:01 – 15:27] Not Letting your Circumstances to Define your Results  Deven shares his experience when he moved to Broad Channel in New York. He faced a relentless cycle of racism and bullying. Deven shares the lesson he got from his story. He learned that he had the ability to determine his future by himself. Do not allow the circumstance to dictate your future; you are the creator of your future. He learned a little bit about perseverance by staying the course.  Deven shares his highschool experience. Met a woman who funded him to go to a private school. Deven shares about the second pivotal moment in his life with his stepfather. If anybody can reach their success, so do you. Go against your barrier, and get a breakthrough.  Once you are willing to get out of your mental prison, you can do anything you want and create your desired future. Deven shares the story of his grandmother’s death and the lesson he got from it. Time is finite, but the legacy that you leave can be infinite and live on forever. Turning your pain into empowerment  The way we attached to our past is how we define ourselves in the present. Deven shares the story of his college experience. He shares his college achievements, although he fell off his freshman year and had to take 21 credit hours. Take the courage to step into the possibility instead of limiting yourself from creating what you desire. Deven shares how he got into the military.   [15:28 – 32:20] Owning Your Story Deven shares about  the three layers of his story Examine your own personal narratives to be a better person The story about who you are The story that you are telling the outside world about who you are. The hyperreal  Examine what you are posting on your social media and notice how we describe ourselves  The story that we tell ourselves about who we are The internal dialog that we have in our heads. Who we think we are in the present state. The story that we want to tell ourselves about who we are All the goals and desires that we have. Take each part of the story, and you'll come to a massive realization that most of the time, people are living in direct contradiction with all parts of their story. It’s only one were able to use all three parts of the story synergistically that we can actually become the person that we want to become in the future. Deven talks about closing the gap between the stories. When you try to reframe things, everything changes. Being flexible and open-minded enough to understand that you might be living your life inauthentically without you realize it. We have to go against the grain of how we're designed as human beings if we want to progress. Evaluating your own narratives Be mentally flexible and open-minded. Willing to accept feedback and be self-aware.   [32:21 – 38:22] Creating the Picture of Who We Want to Become Deven talks about how to create the picture of the person we want to be  Begin with the end in mind Close your eyes and imagine that you have died Reflect and think of how people would say about you, the legacy you left, etc. You will get clear on what is actually important. Only when you can align yourself with that long-term legacy vision that you can start to formulate the picture of the person you want to become. Deven shares his personal mission statement. He talks about the importance of having a personal mission statement. Happiness is transient; it comes, and it goes, but fulfillment is something that never dies. [38:23 – 50:15] The Law of Attraction We can only know what we want once we know who we want to become Picture in your mind what would happen when you achieve your goal  Tap into the understanding of how that would make you feel. Internalize the emotions and the impact so you can start acting as it is already happening You can't control everything that happens, but you can control your response to everything that happens around you.  Your response will dictate your action, and your action will dictate your results. Every level that you're trying to progress up to requires a different you. Deven talks about the momentum aspect. Deven talks about Earl Nightingale. Watch a video on youtube called the strangest secret for one week every day. Be in the constant pursuit of what you want. When you go after what you want with intensity, things will come to you along the way when the time is right.   [50:16 – 56:20] Closing Segment Knowing what you know now, what is one piece of advice for starting? Focus on the important things, always have principles, virtues, and values as your guidance. Don’t be occupied with the urgency of the day to the day list, but align yourself with what is important to you. Start doing things that are important to you, and life will become better. You will go through it or grow through it. Connect with Deven online.  See the links below.   [56:21– 01:10:09]  Off The Clock and Review of the Week Today’s topic will be a book titled Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. Throughout the audiobook, the narrator would interview David and discuss the chapter. Audiobook mixed with the podcast. David Goggins is a beast, and he reminds me of Deven. This book is a great motivational book with a strong underline message that is so relatable. I thank Streamlined Podcasts, the team behind the scene that makes this podcast possible. Reverse Paradigms - Script vs. Story   CEO Space SNAP: Super Networking Accelerated Potential The SNAP is a great networking tool created by Berny Dohrman and Bob Proctor 25 years ago to empower people to connect with more people in less time. It's basically a modified elevator speech, in that it's short, precise, to the point, and powerful. Within the highly refined and specific culture of CEO Space, it's a way for other participants to know how to help you, refer you, or respond in some other way to filling the gaps in your process of developing your enterprise. Presenting the SNAP is also rehearsal. It's an opportunity to rehearse a presentation over and over and test the response in real time. The desired response is for others to give you a "See Me" card with their contact information and a note on how they can help with your request. The system is good, although the skill of the participants is not always consistent. A SNAP is a presentation. Leaders are influencers. Presenting is influence. We influence others to respond to our call-to-action. We MUST define WHAT we want people to do with highly specific and compelling language. The basic flaw is that we recite a script rather than tell a story. People respond to a story if they see themselves as involved in the story or its emotion. Storytelling is an art as well as a skill. The skill improves with rehearsal. The story improves with the artistry of presentation. A leader is first and foremost a person of influence. We must first define the following in order to be a successful influencer: Who We Want to Influence: Define your target market or you risk not having any market. El Mondo is everybody which equates to nobody. Pick your niche and pitch that niche. What We Want Them To Do: The weakest part of the SNAPs that I hear is the call-to-action. We MUST tell the listener what we want them to do. It's that simple, however simple is complex to create. Have your coach help with this one. Why They Should Care: As Simon Sinek shares in his book, Start with Why, nobody will care about the what until they know why. This is a critical paradigm to master and, again, a complex one to create. Our Passion: Be in touch with your passion for what you are presenting. Keep the image of your passion in your spirit and it will be present in your story. Words don't fully influence without injection of your passion. The Relationship: Communication is facilitated by relationship. Be aware that you have and are in relationship with the person to whom you are presenting. If you don't care about them, then why should they care about you? If you aren't getting the desired response, then look at yourself. Are you reciting an ineffective script or are you skillfully presenting by using the artistry of storytelling? By the way, the best stories are short.
