For the 25th anniversary of American Football (Self-Titled), we take a detailed look at how it was made. The origins of American Football began with Mike Kinsella's band Cap'n Jazz, who were hugely influential in the punk scene in the Chicago suburbs. Steve Holmes went to high school with Kinsella and was inspired to learn guitar after watching Cap'n Jazz perform. Kinsella and Holmes became close friends and ended up going to college together and were roommates at the University of Illinois in Champaign. During college, Kinsella briefly joined a band with Steve Lamos called The One Up Downstairs. When that band broke up, Holmes and Lamos began jamming together and when Kinsella heard their practice tapes, he asked if he could join. The three of them ended up forming American Football in 1997. Their friends, Matt Lunsford and Darcie Knight were just getting their label Polyvinyl going in nearby Danville and they offered to release a three song EP in 1998. By the time they were graduating, they had enough songs for a full-length album, but the band was breaking up as Holmes and Kinsella were moving back to Chicago. Polyvinyl offered to release an album anyway so they booked time at Private Studios with local engineer, Brendan Gamble. The American Football (Self-Titled) album was eventually released in 1999. In this episode, Steve Holmes describes the guitar style he developed with Kinsella that was based on alternate tunings and shifting time signatures, inspired by music they were listening to at the time like Steve Reich, Nick Drake, The Sea and Cake and Red House Painters. Mike Kinsella talks about switching from drums to guitar and writing lyrics inspired by the few romantic relationships he had up to that point. His lyrics came from a diary and were heavily influenced by the melodramatic lyricism of bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Sundays. Steve Lamos discusses his musical upbringing and deep love of jazz, which found its way into the American Football sound with his trumpet playing and compositional approach to the drums. The three of them describe the unique sound they found together and the unlikely story about how even though the band broke up early on, the album still managed to reach people years after it was a released. From recording the week after graduation to constantly having to borrow guitars, amps and tuners to embracing repetitive patterns and avoiding traditional verse chorus structures to singing through paper towel rolls during recording to lyrics about relationships ending and the transition into adulthood to the album cover of the now iconic American Football house, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.
Does your brain ever jump to worst-case scenarios, no matter the situation? Many of us in medicine can relate to this phenomenon. It's called catastrophic thinking, and in this episode, Dr. Beth Lamos helps us understand what it is, why we do it, why it may be adaptive, all the ways it can be harmful, and concrete tools and strategies to de-catastrophize our way of thinking. U of I in Champaign / Urbana in the 90's was typical of many satelite college towns to big cities with a happening urban center, dive bars and house parties for the indie scene to procreate within. Drummer Steve Lamos' band American Football was one of the bands within that scene that made a record for Polyvinyl Records, played a few shows then broke up -- except the lore and legend of that special debut album grew like crazy for the next 15 years. Reunion tours in 2014 and reissues all sold like wildfire. An appearance on NPR Tiny Desk Concerts puts the bands success into stark relief. Throughout it all Steve's drumming has added a jazz-influenced mathy component to the jangle and chime of their guitar lines, also punctuating many songs with his trumpet lines throughout their catalog. But even more impressive is his career as Professor of English and Writing at UC Boulder for the past 20 years. He's written extensively on something he calls Resonant Literacy as a way of listeners of music describing what they're hearing in esoteric and abstract ways. As American Football embarks this summer on tours of the US and Europe in celebration of the 25th anniversary of LP 1, Steve's living his best artistic life with more to come!

American Football is perhaps one of THE most influential bands in the scene, especially when it comes to Midwest Emo. Steve Lamos is the founding member, drummer, and trumpet player for the band but Steve is also an accomplished professor and academic. In this episode, Steve and I talk about how influential the music scene was in his college years for not only him but many other young people in Champaign-Urbana. We also cover the reunion of American Football and his subsequent leaving again and coming back. We also talk about Steve's work and teaching at the University of Colorado, Boulder, specifically surrounding the history and evolution of writing instruction especially in the Civil Rights Era. It was my absolute pleasure to get to talk to Steve and dive into all these topics. If you like the Podcast Subscribe! Tonight we welcome someone back to our podcast, Sarah Lamos. Why is Sarah back you might ask and the reason is very easy to understand. Sarah recently completed a very gruelling 110 KM Ultra Trail race in Gaspesie Quebec. A very muddy and wet course with intermittent downpours at night but nothing would stop Sarah from achieving her goal of finishing. We talk extensively about what one needs to do to train for such an event. Plus we ask about her equipment, her diet and the friends she met along the way. How much her family and support group meant to Sarah at every checkpoint. Not many people can do this type of course with insane elevations in those conditions but Sarah did and she wasn't going to be stopped. If you have had any thoughts about trying any kind of Ultra you should take the time to listen to Sarah's story and see what it takes. Below we post Sarah's blog where she wrote about her epic journey. It's a great read and maybe it could help you achieve your goals. The link to Sarah's blog: https://sarah7106.wixsite.com/sarahsblog/blogOur Facebook link, check us out to see our interviews: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495A new link that we are adding, is a fundraiser link that I have started to raise money for my personal run of 161 Km this Fall for the Canadian Cancer Society. Tonight's episode is partly about Saint John trail running and mainly about getting outside in a friendly setting with other people and enjoying the great outdoors. Our special guests Mark McColgan and Sarah Lamos are back with us tonight to talk about that very subject with all our listeners. Both have been on our show before, Mark in episode 58 and Sarah in episode 47. Even if you have listened to these episodes before you may want to go back and listen to their stories once again, both are excellent. The passion that they both have for their running community is outstanding and we at Motivate to Move are inspired by both of them. They both lead groups on trail runs and are very active in their community, setting up events for their groups to go to if they wish and generally having a good time with one another. With fundraisers to help maintain trails and help with those costs, it's no doubt that Saint john trail running has things well in hand.

Wow, wow, wow. HUGE episode all about P2P relations and the steps that were taken by LifeNLight to direct them to where they are now. From a team of two and simply an idea to continuing to grow and becoming one of the best creative companies in the state of Washington the strategies were laid out in this episode, one by one. It takes more than a team, but a family, a group of people dedicated to furthering the mission. One of my favorite topics was work-life balance; too often we neglect our bodies to focus on other things such as consistent productivity, when in reality, it's not possible. Directing Opera: On September 25, 1996, James Graves, Associate Director of SDCF, moderated a panel about Directing Opera. Panelists included Lillian Garrett-Groag, Mark Lamos, and Rhoda Levine. With great vibrancy and humor, the panelists consider the challenges of working in foreign countries, methods to navigate working in a foreign language, and the skills and knowledge necessary for theatre artists to work in opera. Most interestingly, their backgrounds are varied: a choreographer (Ms. Levine), a musician and actor (Mr. Lamos), and a multi-lingual director immersed in opera since childhood (Ms. Garrett-Groag). They delve deeply into the Director/Conductor relationship and elucidate the reasons why this is most significant in opera. And they share the thrills of doing new work, including experience developing operas based on the books Celia, A Slave, and Haroun and the Sea of Stories. This honest and open conversation among peers is essential listening for any artist aspiring to direct opera. Originally recorded - September 25, 1996. Running Time - 1:27:02 © 1996 SDCF
Running Regional Theatres: On January 7, 1987, Artistic Directors Nagle Jackson (of Hartford Stage) and Mark Lamos (of McCarter Theatre) sat down with director Mary Robinson to speak about leadership in regional theatre. Jackson and Lamos discuss the challenges they face throughout their day-to-day routines and the struggle to balance the administrative and artistic aspects of the job. These artistic directors offer insight into the politics of and logistics behind choosing a season and the effective means to attract new audiences while continuing to appeal to current subscribers. For both Jackson and Lamos, risk and experimentation are paramount to feeling artistically fulfilled. They find that the younger generation does not respond to the tradition of season subscriptions, and both strive to alter the expectations of their audiences and spontaneous single-ticket buyers. At the end of the night it is about that communal catharsis -- and that is why audiences go to the theatre. This practical conversation is an intimate peak at the life of the artistic leaders behind Hartford Stage and McCarter Theatre's success and growth over the years. The listener will gain a richer understanding of what it is like to maintain and nourish experimentation within the administrative and artistic departments of regional theatres. Mark Lamos: In June of 2000, Hartford Stage's longtime Artistic Director Mark Lamos sat down with the SDCF for a One-on-One interview. In this conversation Lamos speaks candidly about a recent production of Edward II for A.C.T, his early career and his tenure at Hartford Stage, and the art and craft of directing for opera. In January of 1987, noted director, educator and SDC Board Member Mary Robinson met with directors Mark Lamos and Nagle Jackson to discuss running regional theatres. At the time, these two men were the Artistic Directors of Hartford Stage and Princeton's McCarter Theatre respectively. The conversation begins as many of SDCF's one-on-one interviews do, with Lamos and Jackson outlining the origins of their careers as directors, and specifically as Artistic Directors. We find that both men transitioned from performance to direction, and as Lamos puts it "were the kind of actor's you saw and said 'it looks like he should be a director'". These two master artists talk about the lessons they learned in the various posts which they've held at America's leading regional theatres, including: A.C.T; Arizona Theatre Company, Guthrie Theatre, Milwaukee Rep and others. We learn that though there are issues unique to each theatre and community wherein they reside, there are common obstacles and rewards that face all artists and administrators who work in regional theatre. Lamos and Jackson speak about how they've dealt with enhancing subscriber bases, choosing a season, working with Boards of Directors, finding new audiences and engaging their communities, and reaching out to communities that are not regularly exposed to theatre. This is a discussion not to be missed by anyone who's ever had the goal of running or starting a theatre company.
In June of 2000, Hartford Stage's longtime Artistic Director Mark Lamos sat down with the SDCF for a One-on-One interview. In this conversation Lamos speaks candidly about a recent production of Edward II for A.C.T, his early career and his tenure at Hartford Stage, and the art and craft of directing for opera.
